The city was too small to run in forever. Unlike Sootopolis's many alleys and rooftops, there were no crevices to hide from the Cursed for long. All Petalburg had to its name was rubble and the dilapidated husks of buildings that would take months to rebuild.

It was much harder to raise than it was to raze.

But Petalburg's city hall survived, and with it, the administrative heart of this small corner of an empire that would one day stretch from Ever Grande to Rustboro still managed to beat. It was there where Howard did his job of reconstruction, and it was there where he went to recuperate.

To be seen in a hospital would be to kill morale.

"You're persistent." The admin looked up from his IV drip, where magenta blood was filtered and purified. A red eye found Jayden. "How characteristic of you. You didn't bring the source of your curse, I hope?"

His eye scanned behind the admin in an attempt to locate Chien-pao.

[break][break] Luckily for both howard slayte and him both, it appeared that his Ruinous patron was nowhere to be found. Especially after the events of the war, it appeared as though CHIEN PAO had taken to draining the necessary HATRED from other members within Rocket, of which — especially with the appearance of Kanto's platoons — were in surplus.

[break][break] howard slayte's single red eye would not find the ravenous beast of ruin. Instead, they would only find the Cursed himself, his wrist adorned with a decorative flower wreath by way of his Comfey. Two of his Umbreon accompanied him, Lada and Hesus, sniffing their way around the metaphorical oval office.

[break][break] With a few purposeful strides, the offense admin closed the distance between them, approaching the other. In one hand, he carried a small medical kit, which he calmly set down on the desk.

"I've been busy."

It was not a lie, but it was uttered with the intention to distract and distort. Howard had been busy, as had his fellow admin. While Rocket Beasts existed for the sole purpose of slaughter and Head Scientists existed to push Rocket's knowledge, the four admins existed to ensure that everything functioned properly.

Howard, Jayden, Barnaby, and Fern were always busy. It made Howard wonder what the underbosses even did, besides die to his hand.

Yet Jayden was right. Howard was avoiding him, and he had finally been cornered. Ever since their first meeting, Jayden had excelled at that.

"You'll have to forgive me for not using your company's insurance plan." Even with their headquarters in Rustboro, Howard could never afford insurance. He offered a withered hand carved from ice and stone. Thin red lines of Dynergy formed a latticework under the skin. "What do you want, Jayden?"

Their eyes met. He wondered if this was the person Walsh had sent to kill him.

"We've all been busy," he replied.

[break][break] Unlike he would with others, his words held no judgement or criticism. They were equal in rank, after all, at least as far as the technical portion of their duties entailed. It was not his job to pick apart the machinations of howard slayte's position — but rather to provide him support as was needed.

[break][break] As the hand was offered to him - obediently, he noted - Jayden was silent. Instead, he observed the lines of Dynergy that raced across the fellow admin's skin, pulsing veins that were so similar to the tearing spatial rifts that illeana reyes had once shown him.

[break][break] "You haven't been to the medbay, or to the ship. You've been avoiding me, but also several medical staff."

[break][break] Fingers gently traced the ruby webbing.

[break][break] "You need to be tested, Howard."

[break][break] And it was then, only then, that he met the other's gaze.

They're both exhausted. Jayden was a sword with beaten edges, cracking from denying his purpose of being a blade in favor of becoming a shield. Sootopolis had forced him to deny his programming and defend rather than attack. For the offense admin, such a thing should have been impossible.

Yet he had done it. Their eyes met. Collapse was imminent. They were simply sustaining themselves until the meeting that would dictate Rocket's fate and policy.

"There're too many ghosts in that submarine, Jayden. Too many reminders of her. Why bother torturing myself with yesterday when I'm going to die tomorrow?" Elisabeth deserved to rot beneath the earth. He'd kill her again, if need be. Somewhere in his heart, he suspected that he'd need to.

There were too many coincidences and too many roses for something to not be amiss.

"An admin cannot kill an underboss, even if killing her was the right thing to do. Therefore, you know what must be done. If you're still Rocket's sword, you'll restore order." Howard was too tired for this conversation, yet it had to happen. "You have to kill me, Admin Cross."

He blinked. Dynergy thrummed.

"To maintain Rocket's stability, it has to be you."

A cracked blade. A broken sword. To defy his programming to fulfill his fate — how ironic their old conversation seemed now.

[break][break] How fortuitous those words were now.

[break][break] But Jayden was not just a blade with cracked edges — when howard slayte looked at him, they would see that the admin was not yet fully recovered. Bandages covered his own neck and forearms, the scuffed up scratches that lined such pale-colored skin, filled with blackened paint. Almost too similar to the man that howard slayte hated so much.

[break][break] A glimpse of a smile as he popped yet another compartment in the medical kit. This time, he ripped off an alcohol wipe and began to prep the area.

[break][break] He shakes his head, pressing a thumb casually against the pulsing vein. As if to look for a way of entry.

"If you killed her, then you have killed her on Monroe and Walsh's orders, have you not?" He glanced back up at the other admin. "And if so, then you have done nothing wrong. Kanto's word is absolute."

He had razed Petalburg to the ground. Nothing existed but ash and bone and cooked meat. That was his legacy. When he died, Rocket would remember his marred victory and the city he had seized. The League would remember that he had destroyed the city, that lives had been crushed under hands crudely carved from stone.

This body was a mockery. His eye twitched in rage as Jayden found a vein. Lada and Hesus's eyes bore into his soul, as if attempting to find the tattered vestiges of his original form underneath. Even his scent was distant.

"Walsh and Monroe both demanded I capture Regirock. They needed me to do so. So I did, and Elisabeth got in the way. She had to go. My position is implacable, yet I suspect that I am being set up." He gasped as the needle kissed his blood, delving into toxic blood saturated with Dynergy. "And then you come in and mention Kanto."

Howard's frown tightened, his eye analyzing Jayden's face for any hint of emotion or indication of thought. There had to be something there, in that unknowable mosiac.

"And what of Hoenn's word, hm? What of mine?"

He watches the vial fill up with blood, almost a little too intensely. It would have been morbid, had it not been for the fact that it was Jayden.

[break][break] Or perhaps it was made more morbid because he was jayden cross.

[break][break] "What of your word?"

[break][break] He looks up then - finally - a finger flicking against the vial to make sure the blood was properly flowing. Dynergy merged with toxic, human blood — if, that is, howard slayte was still human.

[break][break] "Does your word differ from that of the administration?"

[break][break] The admin's tone was genuinely curious — though beneath it, as one knew of any Kanto veteran, there was a subtle hint of danger, no different then the silvered edge of the blades he held so dear.

[break][break] mint frost would recognize it well, having been in a similar situation before. Though that time, the setting had been vastly different too — a warm sauna, scarred bodies, a boiled egg.

A line had been crossed. Howard could feel it in the air as blood flickered between a bright red and an even brighter magenta. Regardless of the status of his blood or his body, Howard Slayte was human. Whether he was a brain in a jar, synapses firing in a sea of pure thought, or a being infused with more divinity than most...

...he was human, because he had a human soul and a human will and a human dream.

Things that people like ███ could only steal. Things that beasts like Chien-pao or Chi-yu or Wo-chien could only destroy. He wondered if, like Elisabeth and Penelope, Jayden had fallen into the abyss where light would not reach. Ice as dark as pitch made him feel as such, and yet...

Jayden Cross had always desired a purpose.

"I do not speak of Rocket, I speak of me. If I dissent, it is because I think that we have erred. That is how we improve. We are not the League with their echo chambers and backend politics." He hardly believed it as he said it. It felt like a bad joke.

He felt the knife being unsheathed. The dagger hidden in sultry tones.

"Those things... they will ruin us."

Could one fall into the abyss if they had been born into it? Could a blackened flower wilt, if the only thing that it had known was pure darkness?

[break][break] Suddenly, he thought of conversations shared with fern delaney at the border's edge. Bared teeth and passionate eyes, a desperate need to be heard that echoed - even - in the depths of that poisoned chamber.

[break][break] A hand gripped - perhaps a little too tightly - around howard slayte's wrist, as he exchanged the vial for another.

[break][break] After all, scientists like Lulu Flint and Naomi Sato would need as much blood as they could get, if they wanted to ensure the archeologist's safety. Even if that safety was from himself.

[break][break] "Very well," he said, with a slight nod. "Good thing we are not them, then. I'd be horrified to see what happens when someone sinks too deep into that poisoned well."

[break][break] Around the room, both his Umbreon continued to search — curiously, noisily, unabashedly.

'You are Rocket.'

The depressing thing was, it felt more and more true every day that he woke up. He spent more time working on their goals than his own. When had the archaeologist died in favor of the people who demanded everything and more. Howard had already died for them. His face wasn't his own anymore.

There was no glory to be won in this organization of madmen. Yet there was a small part of him that accepted that these were his madmen.

"It's happened before. My predecessor sunk into the debauchery of the League. Our old mutual acquaintance." He smiled without mirth as Remiel entered the conversation. What harm could the Exacting's ghost do to either of them, now? "I've always wondered why he chose that name."

He was silent, save for the flowing of blood. Nomi and Lulu could try their hardest to save him. He did not need saving as much as this world did.

"Killing her was too easy."

[break][break] At first, he is confused. And then, as the other continues on to discuss Remiel Calcifet, the realization comes.

[break][break] His expression shifts, ever so slightly, like a hairline fracture formed in glass. Barely noticeable. Yet, much like a shattered mirror who's cracks have been resolved by time, hateful ichor now coursed through him, replacing what once was, poisoning everything within.

[break][break] "Perhaps he held a fondness for it," he said instead, plainly, as if nothing was amiss. As if he still did not see that CRACKED fox mask on his desk, a reminder of the past betrayal. "Just as he once had for Rocket."

One admin is amused. The other is not.

My point exactly." His other hand continued to work on ledgers even as Jayden played doctor. It reminded the admin of Chu-e Choi, in a twisted sense. He signed, he marked, he reviewed. Life was secondary to the efficiency of gears playing their parts in Team Rocket's great machine, regardless of the lubricant used to grease the gears. "It should have been harder. Elisabeth has never presented herself as mighty, and yet..."

The pen worked, pressing harder into paper. Howard's hand trembled. He waited for Jayden to crush his wrist, then his windpipe, then his life. Yet he knew that it would not come, deep down.

Man was stronger than ruin.

"She should have been stronger." It felt like an abhorrent confession. "As strong as you. If we had fought, you would've won. Tapu Fini left her as I broke every bone in her body. Why didn't it help her? I must have missed something."

The pen shattered in his hand. Ink blotted the ledger he was working on.

"What the hell did I miss?"
