A feverish, sickly excitement blooms in her chest. It's one part adrenaline - there's so much risk in skirting Petalburg, in encroaching on its boundaries as they are - and one part true eagerness at the potential to hurt. It only takes one straggler, one inattentive Rocket guard to give them the perfect window to kick some ass without inciting a larger incident. [break][break]

She feels unstoppable. She found her birth right, the Duskull of her vision, and she is exactly where she's supposed to be. Fate has led her here. [break][break]

"What a shame," she answers. "Those grumpigs rest on their laurels after invading, unafraid of the consequences. He must feel so safe," she says with dark promise, "but that's not a mistake they get to make twice, is it?" [break][break]

It was a Ranger's job to educate the public and protect them. They'd be remiss if they missed part one, wouldn't they? She releases Duskull from his pokeball. "How do you want to help him reach an understanding?"

“The hell’re you growlin’ at?” An Arcanine trails out of the bar after him. Inoue Hitoshi hasn’t gotten well and truly drunk in a while. These Kanto Rockets spur him to drink. They’re smug at best, infuriating at worst. Helping keep this city in order is an exercise in frustration.[break]
His eyes look out at the darkness, seeing nothing. His vision is a swirl of color. Frustration is dulled, and in its place sits excitement for the future. A few more fights like this and they might just win.[break]
“C’mon. Back in yer ball. Chill out fer a few minutes.” How easily he recalls his guardian. Adjusting his katana, he whistles and goes to an alleyway on the side of the bar. These places are dangerous, but not for him. Like so many drunken men before him, he answers the call of nature, pressed close against a wall.[break]
“O wait do ya do with a drunken Wailord? What d’you with a drunken Wailord?” He sings loud, sings poorly, sings merrily.

he must feel so safe.[break][break]the remark is bruising. annalise can't remember the last time she felt safe. truly safe, without the need to armor herself with the presence of another. the sight of him, wobbling toward an alleyway, is kindling, but robin's words are the rogue spark that could make things burn wildly out of control. [break][break]"no," she breathes out, her fingertips tingling with electric anticipation. "they don't."[break][break]a flash of light announces robin's duskull, robed in red and menacing in the dark. once the petalburg rocket disappears past a building facade, she regards the other ranger. her hand crawls up her forearm, disappearing beneath her sleeve. it reappears, and the blade clutched in her fingers catching the moonlight. silvery, ornate — a gift from jayden cross to mint frost , celebrating his rise to beasthood. [break][break]"this is how," she whispers, a conspiracy lost to the night. "we'll go through my ceruledge's phantom force and ... rough him up a little. ... ready?"[break][break]as soon as robin agrees, the ghost-type manifests from annalise's shadow. it spares a look of recognition toward robin, then cleaves a portal open before them. [break][break]on the other side, as the phantom force finds its ghastly endpoint, she hears him singing. loud, off-key, close enough to pinpoint in the dark. shadows twist like smoke off her body as she lunges out of her ceruledge's portal for him. to try and use her weight to pin him against the wall and thrust the dagger into flesh. [break][break]a gift for a promotion, as it was always intended to be.

The blade is very hands-on. Robin feels jittery with the sick anticipation sitting in her belly, the kind of shaking that comes from the beginning of an adrenaline rush that needs a target. "Let's get to teaching."[break][break]

Stepping through the phantom force, she sees Annalise come in first with the blade. Robin doesn't have a weapon with her of her own, but Omen is plenty of firepower. She can't risk hurting Annalise, so Robin gestures for Omen to follow her to the other side of Hitoshi like a two-pronged approach. Her closed fist opens wide, signaling Omen to launch shadow ball at the Rocket's feet.

How easily the hunter becomes the hunted, the predator the prey. Inoue Hitoshi is drunk on human arrogance, a new vintage, fresh discovered. No one would be foolish enough to sneak up to the edge of Petalburg. The League is too busy bickering, licking their wounds.[break]
He’s just finished, just about to turn, when he finds that he is pinned to the wall. Reflexes, so sharp under ordinary circumstances, dull. He is forced against the wall. Fear swims in his mind, fear that replaces all his optimism. Struggling in vain against the phantom force, his feet seem to betray him as an explosion sends him off balance.[break]
Pain explodes in his back. It is sharp pain, tearing through muscles and scraping against bones. His unseen assailant pierces through him while he screams empty protest.[break]
“Git offa me!” He shouts, receiving the promotion gift with grace worthy of a beast. His eyes fall upon his sword, which would prove his salvation were it not—[break]
Theirs are not the only ghosts dwelling in these shadows. The Hasegawa Muramasa is a bloodthirsty blade bereft of a heart. It defends Hitoshi not because it loves him, but because it loves the taste of his blood. It is a greedy weapon, and Annalise Henderson spills blood that is not hers to spill.[break]
It cleaves up from her shadow, sneaking through the darkness and trying to force her away from Hitoshi. Its cry is low and metallic, nails against a chalkboard.[break]

he screams, severing the stillness of the night. annalise scarcely hears his feverish demand over the sound of her own heartbeat in her ears, shoving her weight against him as she buries the knife as deeply as she can.[break][break]"shut up," she hisses over his shoulder, anxious that his cries will draw attention. her fingers white-knuckle the handle of the blade, threatening to twist it in his back. "shut the fuck up!"[break][break]a grating, metallic sound is her only, split-second warning to move away. a hand presses between hitoshi's shoulder blades and she pushes away from him, but the honedge finds flesh, then armor as annalise's ceruledge swaps places with her. she stumbles back, disoriented by the ally switch, and squeezes down on her arm with her other hand. blood wells between her fingers.[break][break]"don't let him get away," she says. to robin. to the ceruledge with flames sputtering from its shadow sneak wound.

Seeing Annalise charge forward is one thing, and seeing the knife gnaw into his flesh is another. It thrills her. There's no coming back from this moment, she knows. This is the most important Ranger mission she's ever been sat with. They can't afford any half-measures. It becomes ever clearer as the strange-looking sword strikes from the darkness. It succeeds, but only for a few inches, before her place is swapped with her loyal pokemon. [break][break]

"Lock us in," she orders, and Omen generates an imprison around all of them in the alleyway, prohibiting anyone from fleeing or from an unruly outsider coming to his aid. But the pink prison is visible and conspicuous, and their window of opportunity to finish this before getting several eyes on them is shrinking fast. [break][break]

Her gaze flickers from the crimson on Annalise's arm to the glow of the Rocket's eyes. She's more worried about her partner's wound than she can afford to show, so she substitutes it for anger. "Rocket scum!" she hisses. "You're all fucking parasites."

Salvation comes in the red trail of an evil sword’s arc. Rocket’s weakest beast turns, face lit up in the pink light of his prison cell. It is a mask of rage, mingled with confusion. Everything clicks into place when he surveys the face of his chief assailant.[break]
Her.[break]
Something else sets in his mind, an assurance true as a gospel. This is going to be a pattern. They’ll keep doing this until one of them dies in the war. It’s nothing personal, they’re just on opposite sides. Nothing personal he thinks, her gift to him causing a small puddle of blood to pool beneath his boot.[break]
“Get away?” A mad smile masks the rage and fear. He is a beast, here in this stronghold. The sword falls into his right hand, a pokeball in his left. “You fuckin’ amateurs missed yer shot. If you’d stabbed me a little to the left, you wouldda hit my spine. Life in a wheelchair wouldda sucked real bad.”[break]
His ball hits the floor and out comes Kagutsuchi. The old stone dog saw this coming but allowed the young one to make his mistake.[break]
“Get ‘em-” Hitoshis does not finish the command before his sword and his guardian both charge forward. Shadows spurt from the sword, trying to plant a shadow leech upon Omen while his Arcanine’s rock head tries to slam into the ghost knight’s chestplate.

"i want you to walk."[break][break]annalise wants him to skitter back to his superiors as a bloodletted message. a challenge imposed onto them, inscribed in the wound between his ribs, engraved in the now-sanguine design Aurelie Lefevre forged into the knife when she made it. [break][break]come to me, the blade might say, perhaps, if it ever finds itself in the hands of mint frost, jayden cross, or those above and below that have wronged her. i'm looking for you.[break][break]the sound of the arcanine throwing itself against her ceruledge is loud enough — sudden enough — to draw her gaze away from hitoshi. the ghost-type skids across the asphalt, kicking sparks up beneath its heels as it plants its feet. its flames flare against the darkness, casting the alleyway in cool, purplish light as it pivots, raising a sword to combat the arcanine with a brick break.[break][break]"don't worry about me," annalise's voice hovers above the din of battle, loud enough to let robin know that she's fine. and though she doesn't know what the younger ranger has been up to since she sat in for a battling lesson, annalise can tell she's different now. there's a new ferocity in her eyes, a spark of something that teeters on the careful boundary between greatness and immolation. "just worry about you — and remember what you've learned."

He was a message they needed to send. His body wouldn't do as good a job as his pained pleading to his colleagues. She understood that much, though she had some doubts at Annalise's wound... but the Ranger assured her it was fine. [break][break]

She couldn't risk a half-measure. [break][break]

The sword approached with a shadow move. Remember what you've learned, Annalise said. Robin could never forget. Rockets didn't play fair. It was a lesson further proven by Navy during her first gym challenge. She wouldn't play by the League's rules while Rocket held a blank playbook. Shadow leech struck Omen, but it wasn't enough to put him down. "Forget the sword." Omen obeyed, shadow sneaking to assault Hitoshi directly rather than his sword. [break][break]

The two of them couldn't draw this out for sadistic pleasure. Annalise was bleeding; unless Ceruledge was going to cauterize it here and now, they needed to hit hard and fast. So, it was time to demonstrate what she'd learned. She tossed out another pokeball, aiming to hit Hitoshi himself. "You'll walk away... limping." The only concession she could offer, even if she'd prefer to leave him bleeding out on the ground. [break][break]

Flutter Mane's large form filled the alleyway, taunting the ghostly sword.

Some part of him, buried beneath his intoxication, screams to run. Two against one’s bad odds. He is no Greyson Connors, who harried their grunts during Project TOWER. Far from it.[break]
Yer a beast, some part of him screams, act like one. Kick their asses. They ain’t shit.[break]
Kagutsuchi screams, the edge of his proud rock mane shattering against the Ceruledge’s swords. Electricity surges in answer, a wild charge meant to put it against the wall. Bad odds. A losing fight. He’s bleeding. So much for a nighttime reverie.[break]
“Then yer both stupid, ‘cause I sure as shit wouldn’t letcha walk away if I could.” Honest hearts make for honest actions, or so they say. Inoue Hitoshi’s honest heart might land him in a morgue. Something strikes him from the shadows. He swats his sword down against the shadow…[break]
…only to find his sword isn’t even in his hand. The Hasegawa Muramasa roars in rage, soaring over towards the Flutter Mane in answer to its taunt. Fire gathers along its edge, expelled in a blast burn barreling down upon Robin and her trainer.[break]
Valiant though the blow is, it only serves to leave Hitoshi exposed. Omen strikes from his shadow and Hitoshi coughs up more blood.[break]
“F…fuck…” He takes to a knee, his own body starting to fail him. It’s all he can do to try and fumble for another pokeball while the world around him spins.[break]
Wonder if this is what people felt like when I killed ‘em.

a wave of lightheadedness passes through her, fogging her mind. her blood is warm against strangely cold fingers, but only the pallid look on her face gives away her fragile state. she draws a stuttered breath, steeling herself for the remainder of the fight. just a couple more minutes, she tells herself. that's all we need.[break][break]her ceruledge, meanwhile, struggles against the uncompromising silhouette of the hisuian arcanine. its sword clangs against its body, but the retaliation drives the ghost-type down into the asphalt. cement crunches, metal whines, and the damaged armor of her ceruledge cuts a shadow against the wall with the fading sparks of the wild charge.[break][break]it lays there, disoriented, then falls back into inborn strategy. a shadowy portal begins to unfurl beneath it, slower than usual, threatening to swallow the ghost-type and spit it out in a phantom force in a different direction. [break][break]and as hitoshi takes a knee, annalise's shadow passes over him. she swiftly takes the place of omen's umbral attack, raising a leg to try and kick him against the wall and stall his attempt to reach for another ball.[break][break]"stay down," she snarls. "and fucking listen. run back to your coward fucking bosses. tell them what we did to you. tell THEO BECKETT to release your prisoners."[break][break]she plants a bloodied hand against the wall to brace herself as the alleyway spins. she remains on her feet out of spite, out of the enraging thought of Shalin Nariya and all the other missing and dead. traitorously breathless, her anger rises in her throat as a threat: [break][break]"if any of them come back wrong, i will kill both of you. understand?" [break][break]and then she glances at robin wearily, communicating urgency in a look. [break][break]say your piece, if you have one.

Part of her doesn't want to let him leave at all. [break][break]

But Annalise is visibly dizzy and Robin, foolishly, brought no pokemon with healing capacity. She's ecstatic at the hit Omen lands on him from the shadows, but Flutter Mane's caught ablaze by his sword and the ticking clock echoes in her ears. They've overstayed their welcome, really. Rocket grunts could be closing in on their location right now. [break][break]

Robin steps close to Annalise to offer support if the Captain needs it. Omen pops gravity to hold the fierce blade down and keep it from soaring at either of them.[break][break]

Robin shivers at Annalise's threat, knowing it's real. They share a look. Robin, however, finds her tongue weighed down. This was a milestone in her life, though she can't describe it until she's passed it. Still, there is only a before and an after, for tonight. She gestures instead for them to leave, and the burning Flutter Mane offers a phantom force to swallow them whole.

He looks up at this unknown woman, eyes full of wounded pride. He listens, and listens very well. Names are still hard for him, but he knows THEO BECKETT. He knows the sentiment that this woman expresses. While she speaks, his eyes are only for her, but other sounds fill the peripheral edge of his existence amidst the swirl of pain and alcohol. His Arcanine struggles to continue the fight.[break]
"Stay down, Kagutsuchi. You get yer kid to think about." And so his Arcanine does, and so its master listens.[break]
Other Rockets scream on the edge of the barrier. They’re Kanto nobodies, but they’re making an honest effort to get him. They try and slam against the barrier. These interlopers don’t have long. He might not have long, or so his body screams to him.[break]
“Y-Yeah.” All that good sake and whiskey threatens to come up. When he stumbled out of the bar, his stomach was already telling him that he drank too much. This night wasn’t going to end with the same jolly mood it began either way, when boiled down to brass tacks, but Inoue Hitoshi hadn’t been expecting this.[break]
“I get it…” Eyes fall downcast like a wounded, beaten dog. “I get it.”[break]
His eyes find robin coello. They see her standing there, silent. He’s been in her shoes before. Inoue Hitoshi does something decidedly unwise by offering the enemy advice.[break]
“You’ve got a look in yer eyes like ya wanna kill me. Listen to that feelin’ in yer gut next time, or someone worse than me’s gonna kill ya. We’re yer enemies, and we’re comin’ fer everyone ya love.” All it takes is one moment of hesitation, the same one he finds himself offering the League more and more. “Get the hell outta here ‘fore those grunts get through yer cage.”
