this is better than a condemning blade between his vertebrae. there on his knees, too weak to pull the strings of fate in his favor, his future is adjudicated by her and robin. his safety, his worthless career, his life — all could be plucked away by two uncharitable rangers. he is capable. he has his faculties. and he's helpless at their feet.[break][break]just as annalise had been, once. [break][break]it's enough to hold him out over oblivion like rocket had done so many times to her. it's enough to send him skittering back to his bosses with his bleeding pride. she stares down at him as the phantom force stretches like a tall shadow, as he poisons robin with his advice. the look in her eyes is apocalyptic in the heartbeat before they're teleported away. [break][break]robin's fluttermane teleports them away. her fury fades and weakness rolls in. she sinks towards the ground, not unlike hitoshi had done. trembling fingers procure a pokeball, replacing her battle-worn ceruledge with her vaporeon. [break][break] "you were an amazing help, robin." [break][break] her voice is thin and weary, but pride exists beneath the exhaustion. an aqua ring washes over her arm, tinged pink with her blood. she watches the water flow in rivulets over her tattered sleeve, considering her next words, conserving her breaths. [break][break] "what he said just now," she starts, slow. "don't take advice from rockets. you should trust your gut, sure, but you shouldn't hear it from him. they all just want to make you act recklessly — or worse, make you sympathetic to them by pretending to be helpful."

Annalise's praise is a godsend. For all of Robin's work with her Ranger colleagues building up to the boiling-over conflict, Annalise is the most trustworthy. Robin loves Lam and Ollie like family, but it's Annalise's anger that puts her on a deserving pedestal. Only Navy had offered similar advice that, as far as Robin's concerned, has saved her life in her Rocket match-ups thus far. [break][break]

Robin does want Rocket blood on her hands. [break][break]

"Trust my gut," she echoes. "I will. I promise." Her lip curls at the idea of Rockets trying to earn her good faith. Annalise is right to see through such tricks. "I won't be their tool." Then, quieter and with less certainty, she confesses, "Sometimes, I think the League does the same. Trying to earn my good faith when they have... other motives." [break][break]

She couldn't articulate it better. She didn't have the vocabulary for it. After the fake war order to limit pokemon, she couldn't trust them further. She wanted to see the government condemn Rocket with greater vitriol, to demand their bodies feed the soil of Hoenn and do one good thing in their life (and death): nurture the growth of the future.

annalise nods, slow and satisfied with robin's compliance. she listens, unlike so many willful people in the ranger captain's life. the confession that follows after brings june sleigh to the forefront of her mind. annalise wonders if her defiance had ever been so quiet, once, back when her father died. if june is the end of the road, robin is the beginning — someone who can be diverted still. [break][break]"the league is our only hope," she says, her voice an emphatic puff of air from her lungs as she draws a leg up and slumps forward toward her bent knee. "against rocket. against things we never prepared you for that you'll eventually have to defend yourself against."[break][break]robin is younger than her. she should be enjoying the twilight of her teenage years, but she can't. the universe is collapsing and she has to mold herself into something else before they pass the point of no return. annalise believes she's preparing her, but is she just begetting more damaged girls? girls made in her image — angry, afraid, radicalized by their circumstances. Annalise's response is a eulogy. Robin can't speak to what they're mourning, but she knows a dead thing when she sees it. [break][break]

The League is their only hope. It's an idea she can't internalize, not yet. She's not ready to accept a dead end after walking through the spiritual maze in Sootopolis that gave her Omen. For the first time in her entire life as a Hoennite, she thinks there might be three factions at play in the political battlefield of Hoenn. The world does not exist in the dichotomy of Rocket and League. [break][break]

But tonight, it does. [break][break]

That's reason enough for her to accept Annalise's explanation. For tonight, at least. "Is the League okay with what we've done tonight?" Her voice falls quieter. This is the core of it - the juxtaposition of her righteous anger (of their righteous campaign against the terrorists that act against Hoenn every second) and the law, order, principle of the League. What they've done tonight is right. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have happened. Fate has put her on this path. If the League disagrees, it is wrong. [break][break]

She shakes her head to rid the line of thought. "I want... I want to do this again. When and where it's necessary. I trust the League enough." The diplomatic words feel like a surrender, strangely enough. "But I think the League needs help. We need people who work in the shadows like Rocket does." She gestures between them, but it's more Annalise than Robin that has seen the raw and diseased state of the world and chosen to be the scalpel that cuts the sickness out. Robin's following on her coattails. [break][break]

"Someone has to make the bad guys afraid of the dark."

[break][break]robin's voice rises in the night air, filling the deliberating silence annalise leaves in the wake of her question. she picks at the frayed fibers of her sleeve, nodding in agreeance to the younger ranger's desires. [break][break]"true." she lifts her head to look up at her. "the league needs us."[break][break]annalise pushes herself back to her feet. the aqua ring circulates over her bicep like a ranger arm band.
