"But they're just... Tools...," Raziel simply repeats a lesson that Cillian himself might have bare witness to when it came to the way Pryde viewed pokemon, or how Rocket should. It's why he currently calls his Bulbasaur by its name or as an object aside the occasional slip up. It's a habit that took him years as a ranger to correct, and not one he can easily see himself breaking in Rocket. [Break][break]

He looks around now that they were safe but it's short lived as the environment shifts to one that both should be familiar with. A look of pure horror on the young man's face as they were in the labs of Rocket. He knew the people who were working around them, knew the location of everything as he had been forced day after day to clean these very same labs for the scientist who worked for-[break][break]

"Dr. Milaro," a voice calls out and it's enough to send a cold chill down his spine and subconsciously Raziel can't help but step back and cling to Cillian. Raphael Pryde standing by the open door to his office in the middle of the labs. Red eyes piercing through his glasses as he looks at their direction.[Break][break]

"Wh-why is he here?" he questions quietly nearly forgetting they were in a simulation. [Break][break]

"In my office, I have something I need to speak to you about," with that he walks back into his office because the tone of his voice made clear his word was law and he shouldn't be kept waiting.

With a ferocity and conviction that might surprise Raziel, Cillian insists, "Lugia is not a tool, and she never will be."

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunate for Raziel, the memory drags them from the conversation before it can truly turn sour. It's one of his memories, Cillian realizes, and it's not a good one. It should hardly be a shock that it's shown in Raziel's presence, however, as it concerns him just as much.
[break][break]

Though the Cillian of the present hesitates, his shade in memory does not. A younger blond steps from a shared space, head down and shoulders tense. He doesn't correct the error in his name.

"It's only a memory," he mumbles, half to reassure Raziel and half for himself. "They shouldn't pay us any mind."
[break][break]

They'd find themselves pulled along with it regardless of conscious decision, arriving in the office of Raphael Pryde through one means or another. Softly, Gavin Merlino asks, "You called for me, sir?"

"S-sorry sir," he would mumble definitely having flinched away from the outburst, and no longer clinging to him after the initial shock of seeing his father in this apparent 'memory.' It's annoying feeling that he has to unlearn so much as this Rocket just feels like he is backpedaling from everything he's been originally taught. He jumps away in sudden shock as another Cillian appears but this is the one that he's more familiar with, and it seems this vision is to keep with him as they arrive into his father's office.

"Merlino," he greets as the other walks in, a seemingly welcoming smile on his face. The office is surprising clean but Raziel was in here before he had called the other in it was little doubt it was due to him as keeping the labs clean and organized so that the scientist could do their work was part of the teenagers' duties. Pryde's pyroar laying across the spare couch in office as it seemed to stare the young man down.[break][break]

"Apologies for the error, but with deadlines and raising teenagers well..." he trails off with a chuckle as he offers the seat across his desk, removing his glasses to rub his eyes. Raphael keeping his demeanor warm as he uses this act with his men to make them more comfortable with him. Though the young man might also recall these same deadlines as Pryde was would more often than not insist for overtime to complete. [Break][break]

"I've been enjoying your work ethic, I think if you were able to apply yourself a little more I could see you in a similar position as myself in the future, Raziel even speaks highly of you," he comments buttering the other up before he intended to dive in with the harder questions.

Gavin pays little mind to the Pyroar's stare, his focus on Dr. Pryde as the Head Scientist spoke. The tension in his shoulders seems to relax at the warmth in Pryde's tone, the compliments it paints in the air.[break][break]

It's a trap, Cillian knows, but can't caution his younger self. Still, he grimaces.[break][break]

"That's all right, sir," Gavin says softly. He'd have said as much whether it was or not, of course. Cillian remembers being affronted by the insinuation that he didn't throw all of himself into his work, as though it wasn't the sole escape from his grunt work. But Gavin says nothing of this, only, "That means a lot, coming from you."[break][break]

Cillian mutters, "Maybe if Beckett weren't riding my ass all the time, I'd have had more time in the labs." He's folded his arms, as though he might shield himself from the uncomfortable conversation he knew would follow.

"If it makes you feel better I'm pretty sure he knew that, he... often complained about Beckett," Raziel offers, unable to help himself from coming to his father's defense more out of habit than anything else. Though as if realizing what he did he once more steps away from Cillian as he shrinks into himself and mumbles, "sorry..." [break][break]

"But of course, I'm proud of your work and time and time again you have shown yourself to be a man I can trust," he continues to butter up before his hands cup together as he turns his chair to the one way glass toward his lab that allowed him to watch his men from his office. "Which is why I must ask you, as I know Raziel has come to trust you as well, but has he been talking to you about more.... delicate topics?" he questions seeing it as the best way to put it. Sure he knew his office was a safe place to talk about such a thing, yet the admittance of his failure to keep his son's teenage rebellion under check was not something he wants out in the public. [break][break]

And he knows he can fully trust Gavin to keep this conversation to himself.

Gavin takes the bait, and the trap snaps shut.[break][break]

His eyes widen, the slightest betrayal of his alarm. That was hardly shocking; he'd jump at any sharp gestures, flinch at raised voices. His parents, then Rocket, have taught him fear.[break][break]

It's a language he's fluent in.[break][break]

Cillian gives Raziel a look when he makes a comment on Beckett, not meaning anything by it other than curiosity, but Raziel's quick to shrink back.[break][break]

Cillian says nothing, his attention flicking back to the memory.[break][break]

"We talk sometimes," Gavin is saying, shrugging his shoulders in emphasis, "but I'm not sure how you mean about being delicate. He's a bit too old for the whole birds-and-bees talk."[break][break]

Gavin laughs, and Cillian knows it's to shed the discomfort he'd felt.

The Head Scientist gives and exasperated sigh, and even knowing that this was just some memory Raziel couldn't help but already he could feel the sudden shift in mood. This was how his father was, seemingly kind one minute and so cold and cruel the next. It could easily be felt in the look of disappointment Pryde gave the other as he turned his chair to give Gavin his full attention now. [break][break]

"Do not feign ignorance with me Merlino," Raphael speaks with a harsh tone full of disappointment. "You and I both know the kind of talk that get people in our line of work into trouble and if Raziel's thoughts were as simple as wondering about something as simple as that I would not have called you in," he scolds before he leans back in his chair with a face full of concern and worry, yet Raziel has seen this look before. It was one that has been used to make him faulter time and time again against him. [break][break]

"I am a concerned father Merlino, and if Raziel is going around asking questions that will get him or his brother in trouble I need to know about it so I can properly confront and nip it in the bud," there is no mention of himself or his wife when it came to that same concern despite knowing that the whole family was often at risk dealing with this version of Rocket, only his boys. "You're one of the few friends he has that I can see him opening up to, so please Merlino, has he said anything concerning to you?"

Cillian watches his younger self wither beneath the scathing stare. Even now, years later, Cillian knows a spreading sense of discomfort from that look. He knows what's coming.[break][break]

He remembers how guilt had clashed with fear, how he'd begun to doubt his own convictions as Pryde donned the mask of a concerned father figure.[break][break]

He remembers the thought that had sealed his fate.[break][break]

I promised him.[break][break]

"N-No, sir," Gavin mumbles. "I'm loyal to Rocket; I'm sure he'd know better."[break][break]

"As if either of us would be so lucky."

"Lucky that... I would know better?" Raziel can't help but question the other about his comment. This whole thing was honestly hard to watch, the presence of his father setting his anxiety into a panic but with the Underboss there he feels he can't react. If he did he would fail so he just continues to witness the other's memory, taking in a nervous breath as his father sighed and brought out a whistle.[break][break]

"So you claim," he mumbles as he twirls the whistle a bit before he blows it. The pitch it radiates too high for simple humans like them to hear but one of his ghost does show up in the form of his Gastly phases through the wall as Pryde gives a pointed look toward his subordinate before he snaps his fingers. The gas pokemon floating toward the grunt before the gastly ball puts itself within the same space as Gavin. With it's body made of gas there would be no physical force but the gas it was made up of would no doubted begin to slowly fill the other's lungs to slowly cause suffocation.[break][break]

Pryde moves around his desk as his gastly does this, "My son isn't worth losing your favor with me Merlino, nor is he worth your life," he tells the other seemingly more than willing to allow his gastly to fully engulf the scientist. While Pryde has hurt his men over the topic of his sons he has yet to kill for the same but there was a first for everything. The Head Scientist moving forward just enough to look the other in the eye. Kneeling if he had to if the act forced the other down, "Are you sure you have nothing to tell me?"

Cillian doesn't answer. He's staring at the scene before them, transfixed and horrified. Though he knows that he survives this ordeal, he hadn't known it at the time.[break][break]

He remembers the fear. Watches Gavin claw at his throat in desperation, clutching desperately at the corner of the desk to remain upright as unconsciousness threatens. He sinks to his knees, shaking his head emphatically and staring at Pryde in wild desperation.[break][break]

Cillian remembers, too, the thoughts that had raced through his mind.[break][break]

Was it better to come clean, and be punished as a liar? Or to stick to his guns in the hopes this was all a bluff? Nothing, no one was worth dying for, but how much worse would Rocket treat him if they knew he'd tried to keep Raziel's secret?[break][break]

Paralyzed by fear and without the breath to speak, Gavin only shakes his head again.

Pryde just sighs in disappointment before he stands himself up and just leans himself back on his desk, "Well I suppose we do have a little time for you to think about that," he tells him as he waits seeming to just check his pocket watch. "It's been about 90 seconds so far, could only imagine how much your lungs must be burning won't be long before lasting damage can happen, all of which will stop if you just give me what I want," he offers a way out. Though right when the 3 minute mark hits Pryde would snap his finger again with a sigh. He doesn't hit the other, lord knows his punches don't compare to the young man's sponsor. [break][break]

"Fine then, for now lets say I believe you about not knowing anything," he shoos away the gastly and allows the other a chance to recover and catch his breath, "Though if I find out you're lying to me Merlino you might find your position here in jeopardy, for now feel free to finish the rest of your shift, we have deadlines to meet," he informs the other as he put on back the smile from before, one that just sent shivers down Raziel's spine before he looks to Cillian. [break][break]

"I don't understand, why would you do that?" he can't help but question. Even when the underboss told him he hadn't he just agreed with it because he was the underboss and Raziel had no grounds to question it even if he didn't fully believe it. Though after watching this he is more conflicted and now just doesn't understand why the other would risk so much for him.

It makes Cillian sick to watch. He turns away, curling his fingers into fists to disguise the tremor there.[break][break]

He had been so weak. He had never put himself in that position again. Raziel had been the first and last person he'd lied for; from then on, he'd protected himself.[break][break]

As Gavin shakes and clutches at his throat, taking deep and desperate gasps of air as soon as the Gastly retreats, Cillian turns his distant gaze on Raziel.[break][break]

"I was trying to protect you." Bitterness leaks into his tone. "Not that you did the same."[break][break]

Gavin rushes out of the room, and the memory around them begins to fade.

Raziel can't help but keep watching as his father prolonged Gavin's punishment all due to his talking to his colleague. Far too often that if he didn't want things worse he wouldn't look away and so eyes stay glued to the scene. At the moment wishing he had just kept to his damn self and how everything would be better. Gavin wouldn't have been punished, his brother wouldn't have betrayed him, he'd probably still have his whole face if he had just kept his yap shut. [break][break]

Or if he just wasn't around at all...

[break]

He tries to shake this thought out of his head as he waited for the answer just for a wave of guilt to overcome him at the other's accusation. He bites his lip as he fights back the tears in his good eye, but the hurt is clearly there. "You think I didn't try to avoid saying anything either? But when he confronted me he knew!" he yells forgetting for the moment that he was talking to the underboss and not just his lab brother, "Asriel had told our dad everything I said to him," that he knew for a fact as his brother had admitted to it, "and he told me you did the same so why would I think you wouldn't when my own twin did?" he questions in clear betrayal. [break][break]

Though unlike Cillian's grudge whose was years old his was only months, and everything still felt fresh. "Said my punishment would be worse if I didn't tell him my version of events... and why would you choose defending me when you could have his favor... and l-like everyone else you were just using me to get on h-his good side," he continues the tears following down the one side of his face as he tried to explain his side through cries.[break][break]

All of which he believed because of course he did, his father had him wrapped around his his damn pinky. Basically programed and conditioned him since he was a toddler and knew how to manipulate him as if Raziel came with a user's manual.
