It isn't like Xuying wouldn't be somewhat familiar with cold weather. Unova can be pretty cold if it wants to be. Living in a tower from Arceus-knows-what-time can get pretty frosty. He has multiple blankets for a reason, and nearly collapsed amidst the Hoennian summer time. But ... that all this time ... there would have been a place like this ... Hm. He has to revisit the map he has of Hoenn for sure (one that probably dates back a century or so, even though it's condition is more speaking of the last decade - someone probably photocopied it some time).[break]

Now, however, he is finding that his pen isn't working in the chilly weather as, at least, he is appropriately dressed for the occasion. Still, it doesn't do any good when he can't take proper notes and when his trusted-mistrusted companion of Z the Porygon-Z is also just literally freezing up every five steps. He sighs, shielding his eyes as he looks around to find someone - anyone. "Hey ... wonder if you have a pen you can lend me?" he says immediately after finding someone. The next problem would obviously be his frosted notebook, but one step at a time, right?

maki's been here plenty of times before. though she gets cold easily, there's something about the peace and quiet here that lets her focus when she needs to. almost every time she's come here, though, she's been alone, with no one else around. so it's a surprise to her when she hears the telltale sound of footsteps crunching on the frost below, and turns to find someone she's never seen before asking her about a pen.[break][break]

she smiles sheepishly, her countenance immediately melting into something more friendly and welcoming. "no, i'm sorry. i don't have a pen with me." she packs light for her trips, only bringing necessities. "do you have a phone with you...? you could write whatever you need to write there." what in the world does he need to write for, anyway? he doesn't look like a researcher of some kind. certainly not a prepared one, given that he didn't bring a pencil instead of a pen.[break][break]

there's another crunching sound. maki freezes. "...don't move," she warns him. "the pokemon here... can be particularly vicious, if we've stumbled into their territory." slowly, she inches toward her pocket, before clicking something inside.

It seems that he doesn't have quite the luck - it's truthfully his own mistake as he hasn't even expected to land here quite so, but ... well, life goes. Lapses in judgement come. Maybe he's already getting old ... (at the ripe age of not-even-thirty). "What a shame," Xuying remarks with a little sigh that translates into a puff of white fog in the air, "but hmm ... I guess you are right. I didn't think about that ..." A pondering look crosses his face as he tries to remember where he put it after he muted his notifications, not needing or wanting to know what cousin third grade twice removed is up to. Has he ever used the memo app, actually? Probably. Doesn't mean he actually remembers doing so, but ... it'll be fine, right?[break]

Just as he wanted to give thanks to the stranger, a bright white screen blinking up as he finally found his phone, she warns him of - of ... something. Freezing immediately, his eyes wander around. Luckily, the Porygon-Z doesn't have to be told twice not to move; in fact, he should probably call the poor lad back soon, unless its already defunct abilities are getting even more defunct. And then ... Xuying sees two Pokémon nearby, though the Cryogonal is the one that catches his attention. If she said that they are particularly vicious, then ... Slowly moving a pokéball out of his own, it takes only a moment until he throws it at the Cryogonal, wondering if he should throw a rock into the other direction to distract the Beartic.

there's no need for xuying to throw a rock. maki's already pulled out a pokeball, clicking it to release the creature hiding within. an annihilape appears, a simian pokemon with fluff gray fur that belies furious red eyes. seeing the cryogonal already taken care of, the ape directs its attention toward the beartic, which lets out a mighty roar and charges. "use cross chop," maki says. her annihilape throws itself into the line of fire, taking the beartic's charge head on before using its fists to chop it across the belly.[break][break]

the beartic stumbles and goes down. it doesn't rise again. the attack was super effective, after all. "there will be more," maki tells xuying. "they'll have heard the roar. if you're prepared to fight... we could take this opportunity to catch what comes after us." she tilts her head, once again with that curious smile that she's carefully polished over the years. "i will stand by your side, in that case." this is a good opportunity. even if he's not much of a fighter, i can use him as a distraction.

Upon by the stranger's quick work and the Annihilape's strength, he applauds a little, gloved fingers clapping dimly against another. "Impressive! You are quite the formidable trainer," he compliments in sincerity - it also means that in those unfamiliar terrains, he probably should really stick to her if he doesn't want to meet an early end, or sustain much too many injuries (although he isn't quite aware of the other's plans to use him as decoy - fodder, possibly, for the wild ones). Xuying's seemingly jolly expression takes on a more serious edge, smiling yet as he nods, "oh, it seems you are taking the words out of my mouth, I was just wondering if it weren't smart to team up!" This way, at least, he hopefully has someone to watch his back ... right? "My name is Zhou Xuying, by the way - you can also call me XY, or XYZ, if you'd like."[break]

And thus, a possibly strange alliance is formed under the brightly blue sapphire sky as he looks around the white wastelands. "Now that that's out of the way, I wonder - are you here to find new Pokémon?" Xuying barely finished his sentence when he notices another pair of wild pokémon in vicinity. Readying a pokéball, he has his eyes set on the Forretress - with something like an alarming look, even, as he vaguely remember ... but that one can self-destruct, right? Better take it out quickly, so he throws a pokéball before looking over to the other.

well, isn't he easily impressed? all maki did was keep a cool head and utilize type matchups. "...maki," she says, introducing herself but withholding her family name. there's no real danger here if she's recognized-- the yukimura name is a very well known one, after all-- but still, she doesn't feel like dealing with the questions if he does recognize her.[break][break]

"yes. i come here quite often to search for new companions." she still has that smile on her face, the one belying her hidden intentions. it's lucky for xuying to have met her while she's busy passing herself off as a civilian. that means, no matter what, she has to play nice. thankfully she's used to this, and is very familiar with etiquette and its rules.[break][break]

two more pokemon reveal themselves. maki isn't interested in either of them, so she commands her annihilape to once again... well, annihilate. one more cross chop knocks the abomasnow down, while xuying catches the forretress. the abomasnow isn't quite finished, but when it realizes it's been overpowered it makes the wise decision to make a hasty exit. maki might be able to fool people, but pokemon seem to sense the darkness lurking within.

He nods at her introduction with a friendly smile, not further inquiring about her family name and such. It would be a lie to say he already met enough people to know that sometimes, it's just a sensitive topic to approach, though he doesn't find much interest in what isn't ultimately shared by others first. He, after all, has other things to do than be nosy about someone else's business. "Nice to meet you, Maki," he remarks then, "let's work together well, shall we?"[break]

And as it seems, she's very reliable when it comes to taking out those she finds no interest in. Clapping another time is probably pretty overdoing it at this point, so he only gives a confirming nod as he picks up the Pokéball that fell to the ground and is his to claim now, as per the rules of this strange little world. In the same motion, he calls back the Porygon-Z, releasing the Rotom into the icy winds instead. "I see! Yeah, I was actually looking for rocks, though it seems that most are quite covered up by the ground," he muses, making smalltalk over the biting wind as another pair of Pokémon approach.[break]

"Y, let's see your Confuse Ray!" he eyes the dual type of the two, getting ahead of the Froslass as he easily throws a Pokéball and attempts to catch it.

rocks? here? maki bites back the urge to ask him if he's some kind of fool. this land is completely covered in a thick sheet of ice, making it impossible to break through unless you were to use a drill. and he doesn't seem to have a drill on him, so... she can only conclude that he simply wasn't paying attention enough to the name "the silent icelands".[break][break]

the next pokemon show up. maki switches out her annihilape for her talonflame now, giving the raging simian a break. she eyes the cetoddle, which seems to merely be wandering. it's young, but it could be useful... "flame charge," she commands. the fiery bird, at her behest, charges into the cetoddle while covering its feathers with flames. the cetoddle falls back, and maki throws a pokeball at it. if it isn't useful, then i'll find it a new home, she thinks.[break][break]

she glances at xuying. "may i ask why you were searching for rocks...?"

He receives no immediate answer to his reply, though that doesn't bother him as much as the dangers of wild creatures seem to lurk at every corner and he finds himself paying a little more attention to his surroundings than he would normally, a careful gaze in his otherwise rather carefree attitude. Just as Maki finishes off a wild Cetoddle, his eyes gaze upon a Bastiodon in the distance, looking over to the shiny Rotom as he also brings forth a shiny Metagross from its ball, "let's try and catch that Bastiodon." His Pokémon act quite so on their own, approaching the Pokémon with a Shock Wave from Rotom and a Psychic from Metagross before Xuying himself chimes in with a Pokéball to attempt a catch.[break]

Just as he lifts the Pokéball from the ground and comes closer to Maki again, he hears the question she is posing - an amused smile spreads on his face as he hums, "I wonder? They're pretty, aren't they? It's kind of a hobby of mine, but-" He looks around with a dramatic sigh. "-turns I'm more indulging a different endeavour than that today."

it would be harder to make conversation here if the pokemon interrupting them weren't... admittedly a bit weak, which she's come to expect from wild pokemon who haven't been trained properly. at least she can make something of them, if she catches them, and if not they can contribute to rocket's efforts elsewhere. a crabominable blocks her way, presenting her with two different ways of hitting with something super effective. she opts to increase her talonflame's speed. "flame charge," she commands once more.[break][break]

the blow sends the crabominable reeling backwards, and she takes that opportunity to throw a pokeball. "yes, but why here of all places?" she presses further, as the ball she threw captures the weakened pokemon. "did you come here specifically to look for rocks, or were you here already and decided to look for them?" the whole area is something of an anomaly, so maybe there's something worth finding here. but you'd still have to get past the layers of ice to find it.
