The longer they go side by side, the more the researcher notices their very apparent discrepancy in skills - it does make him wonder how he would have done on his own, but fortunately, if nothing else, his Pokémon should know their way around. Or that's the set of beliefs that he has been living with for quite some time now, not bothering to expand his own horizon if not absolutely necessary. As a Ferrothorn approaches them, he only lets the Rotom do its spiel of Confuse Ray, followed by a Hex before he is able to capture the Ferrothorn without too much of a hassle.[break]

However, his temporary travel companion poses quite a good question - one that doesn't falter his carefree smile, though there is a smidge of self-depreciating amusement in there, too. After all, who would venture here for rocks? "A wonderful question indeed," Xuying starts, looking more pensive as he goes, "a mixture of both? I was hoping to get to the Chasm, to be honest, but I'm more or less stuck here. And you never know where the ice doesn't give way to the stone underneath it, so ... I thought I'd stick around for a bit." Even if taking notes is a little hard, but he'll have to make-do. So far, there isn't even anything noteworthy happening, rock-wise.

the chasm, is it? a new abomination upon the land, one that should not exist, yet does. maki might scoff at the idea of this greenhorn heading into such a place, but she holds back the urge. she mentally adjusts herself, expression not changing, remaining so-seemingly open and friendly. "the chasm is supposed to be very dangerous," she says. "even i wouldn't go there alone. the pokemon there are... difficult. not like these pokemon at all."[break][break]

speak of the devil, there's a piloswine charging at her talonflame now. the bird is, of course, much too fast, even without the speed boosts it's gained. it slams into the ice type with yet another flame charge, toppling the pig. it's not quite finished off, but it's enough damage that maki barely thinks before sending another pokeball its way. "you'd be much safer here. i don't recommend you visit the chasm." ...unless you want to die horribly, she adds silently.

There is only a vague smile that the researcher returns to her words, justified and quite sensible in the grand scheme of things. Though his team may look impressive with being fully evolved and such, their battle expertises certainly would not come from Xuying himself for he liked things to be functional, not proficient in fights he rarely gets into. Until ... well. "Hmmm ... hmm," he returns, "you're probably right. I don't think I'm gonna last much longer, should I keep up with such." There are braver souls out there, for sure, and those that can actually brave the tides. He, however?[break]

He scratches the hand as he gestures for the Metagross to take care of the approaching Klinklang, catching it with a Pokéball after a blow of Psychic turns it immobile just enough for him to throw a Pokéball. "Still, there are a few things I'd like to check personally, so might as well. Have you ever been there?"

"no." not yet. it's piqued her curiosity, but she doesn't admit as much. the public facing persona of maki yukimura would have little interest in such a place, seeing as she's not an active agent of the league, and her own rocket affiliations are hidden under layers of deception. "if you want to explore the chasm that badly, you should find someone much stronger to assist you."[break][break]

a kingambit notices the struggle and comes nearer. her talonflame screeches and flies at it, its speed boosted by multiple flame charges, and the kingambit analyzes the battlefield and decides not to bother. maki's talonflame comes back to rest on her shoulder. "stronger even than me," she adds, hoping to dissuade him from even thinking to ask.

Unfortunately, his hopes of having the other possibly accompany him down to the strangest and most dangerous area of this place are going up in flames just like that, having been ready to ask just when she mentioned 'asking for someone stronger to tag along'. A pity, really, since he doubts he will find someone on-the-fly, but then again ... who knows? He already ran into Maki on his merry way, perhaps he's lucky enough for it to happen twice. her stay so far...? what is he, a hotel manager? maki shakes her head, focusing on the battlefield. an off-color magnezone has shown itself, and she sends her talonflame after it, another flame charge blazing bright. the bird gets caught with an electro ball, but despite the type advantage it barely scratches it thanks to its upped speed. "it's not as quiet as it usually is," maki comments, "because someone's stirred up trouble." it's only slightly pointed at xuying.[break][break]

she throws a ball at the magnezone. "the frenzy should slow down soon," maki points out. "it's likely something else stirred them up, and our arrival only agitated them further. maybe the appearance of the chasm has them upset...?" well, whatever it is, she's got some new cannon fodder to sort through. she can't complain too much about the outcome of this outing.

Her answer has him look less foolish than he makes himself appear for a moment, something sharper lying in the back of his gaze as he ponders, but it vanishes as quickly as it came - of no hostile nature, either, just wondering if she meant him or, well, not. Not that it actually matters in the long run, Xuying would argue, considering that things have been done and there is no use in trying to undo them or try to shift the blame away from him to another. He still remarks to her following words, mentioning some third party, with a hum, "I guess ... this could be." He has not that much of a clue of those happenings to be sure, but ... it would make sense.[break]

"Well, let's consider this my cue to advance towards the strangest lands as-is, and I take this is your cue to leave these barren views?" he concludes, possibly ill-fated, after a short pause, watching how the other catches a shiny Magnezone, and gestures then for his own shiny Metagross to follow him. "Farewell, then, and thanks for the company!" A cheer that doesn't quite fade from his face as Xuying lifts one arm in a wave, disappearing further into the snowy lands until ...[break]
