She'll have to tease him about it later. For now, she wants to see what it can actually do. [break][break]

She'll always play for an advantage. He'll always push forward despite a lack of them. Slowbro launches another psychic to take advantage of the psychic terrain, blasting at the bird with a mental surge of energy. Ameena would much rather show off its poison prowess, but Montgomery's made a smart choice with the Skarmory, which is immune to such tricks. "How did you get your hands on an ilumina pokemon?" She had no explanation for her own toxic chain Slowbro except for finding it that way and poaching it for herself. She finds the illumina Skarmory to be a testament to Montgomery's own ideals. Weren't those kinds of pokemon attracted to people of pure heart, or was that just a running joke?

[attr="class","monty"]He supposed that this was Ameena's first encounter with Pipsqueak, given the skarmory had still been a hatchling when Navy gifted him the Pokemon. It had only become fledgling when skarmory was alive.

The distraught that she had when she learned the harsh reality that her father-figured was eliminated had broken his heart. And there was a part of him that hated his partner for it, despite the love he had for her.

This battle? It would be for skarmory. Pipsqueak was determined to get revenge.

"Good behavior should be rewarded, right?" It was a hint enough for her now. He was sure she would either figure it out on her own, or he would tell her about Navy handing over one of the twin illumina Pokemon.

Luckily, the steel tera type didn't make Pip weak to the psychic blasts that Ameena's slowbro emitted. It did slow her down.

"And she's pissed."

Pipsqueak ruffled her metallic feathers, roosting to recover from the mental damage. There were images they both shared in their mind of her predecessor — and determination glinted in both their eyes.

She flew up into the air before flying down with force, pressing her body down in an attempt to literally squish the galarian slowbro into submission.

He could play coy, but she would be sure to interrogate him when they met to lick their wounds. Illumina was not as fascinating as toxic chain or shadow pokemon, but all of the unusual forms held interest. She didn't have the pure heart to garner the trust of one. She suspected she didn't have the compassion to bring out such a trait in her own, either.[break][break]

The bird was oppressive and fierce. It tackled Slowbro, who launched a completely ineffective side shell arm at it. The thrashing only enabled the Skarmory to batter him further, and he fainted. "Well, I guess we need to stress test your new friend." She returned Slowbro to his painted pokebal and sent out Lucario instead, the loyal fighter raring to go. "Keep it close." Lucario hmph'd in acknowledgement and charged at the Skarmory with close combat.

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery clicked his tongue, annoyance crossing his features as lucario appeared. Any fighting-type move, and Pipsqueak would be rendered unconscious.

Or worse.

She attempted a return, smacking the lucario with such strong force thanks to her relationship to Montgomery. However, the close combat did exactly as he expected — she fainted, knocked out by the fighting-type.

Ameena was smart. He knew that. And he loved that. But damn, was it annoying sometimes.

"Let's go, runerigus."

From a green dusk ball, he flicked his wrist. The ball spun rapidly, until it opened and released its beast.

The coffin-shaped ghost emerged, shadowy hands reaching out wildly. And, with the risk of hurting his own trainer, he summoned forth an earthquake.

The skarmory's wing-slap knocked Lucario in the face, but his punch landed true, fainting the illumina specimen. She could tell it was powerful, but it fell victim to the perfect type match-up. Admittedly, she was interested in seeing it while they fought on the same side, but such an opportunity seemed impossible any time soon. [break][break]

Runerigus suited him, in an odd way. It's earthquake was unexpected. Ameena lost her footing as the earth cracked around her, stepping into a jagged crevice. Her back straightened as she stepped wrong, her ankle shouting in pain and a grimace finding her face. Still, she bit back a hurt noise. Lucario danced across the rocking earth in what was building to be an extreme speed -- except it would go through Runerigus, and put Lucario on the path to strike Montgomery instead. [break][break]

"Return." She barked her order in that tone that had Lucario skid to a stop after building speed. Despite the cracking earth and jagged edges that made its way to his paws, he returned to her side and, sensing the odd way she stood, offered a heal pulse for her ankle. Ameena hoped Montgomery didn't notice how desperately she'd dragged Lucario back from striking him through Runerigus' form. [break][break]

Instead, she struck up conversation again. "New pokemon? I thought you preferred more physical fighters."

[attr="class","monty"]If Montgomery was concerned about Ameena's ankle — he was — his face remained a true neutral. The only indication of reaction he'd have was a heavy swallow, his Adam's apple bobbing.

However, it didn't seem like the earthquake had been enough to slow her lucario down. He was substantially faster than his runerigus, hoping along rock to rock to come and swipe at him through the ghostly creature's body.

Claws knicked at his skin, ripping through cloth and creating new cuts along his body. Ameena's return was at least enough to allow the wounds to be superficial. In that moment, he truly knew how much she cared for him.

Because thank arceus that Pokemon didn't try to kill him.

"I gotta keep ya on yer toes, now, don't I?" He always preferred to get physical. But, should special moves become priority in a fight, Montgomery could switch his style.

The runerigus would boost his attack, splitting the power between Ameena's Pokemon and himself. And once he did that, he layered stealth rocks across the field to provide continuous damage to lucario.

"Proficient in improv, are we?" She hadn't expected him to so effectively switch styles in combat. It was a feather in his cap. He could adjust well to a given situation. No doubt, it served him well as a deputy. Situations could change in an instant. [break][break]

Runerigus split their power and filled the area with rocks, limiting Lucario's mobility and strength. Excellent strategy, though she preferred an overwhelming victory for herself. [break][break]

She returned Lucario to his pokeball despite his willingness to continue fighting with the odds stacked against him. He was quickly becoming her favorite pokemon, but she couldn't over-indulge to the point of tipping her hand. She tossed out Unown instead. "Nothing wrong with predictable," she said casually as Unown generated a shadow snare to entrap the Runerigus. "I think I prefer when you fail consistently." Oh, how she liked to see him fall before her.

She knew that she could make him fail easily. With a snap of her fingers, he was her loyal mutt, wagging his stupid tag at the simplest praise.

He wouldn't cave too easily, given the fight.

shadows snared his runerigus, rendering him useless. Montgomery clicked his tongue, releasing flutter mane into the mix. He wondered if this would end in a stalemate.

It attacked, throwing a shadow ball to the unown.

A Flutter Mane? "My, you are full of surprises." She would have to be wary of making further assumptions about him. He clearly fought with a wider variety of pokemon than she had given him credit for. She stuck to psychics with a few physical fighters, but largely they all had some psychic prowess outside of Lucario. [break][break]

Unown couldn't duck out of the way in time. The fast shadow ball struck home, causing it to dip towards the ground before it recovered itself. Meanwhile, Ameena spared a glance to her buzzing phone. [break][break]

She had extended herself long enough, here. "Unown, cover." The creature created a domain around the battlefield. Further attacks would be deflected to the walls of the domain. She turned to Montgomery to offer her full attention. "This has been fun, Deputy, but I will have to let you leave with your life."

His eyes were narrowed with a pang of jealousy. Envy.

Though the domain blocked his attacks, he'd try to dash forward and grab her wrist, lest she disappear like a good dream.

Daring. She liked that about him, his audacity. It got him into trouble, too, but she could forgive his transgressions. "Until next time, Deputy."[break][break]

Unown was quick on the draw. She pulled back from his lunge while Unown used hidden power to force him back - though the Unown's prowess was enhanced by its shadow power and the strike created a larger impact to blow him backwards than she could have predicted. She gave the pokemon a sharp look before the two of them disappeared into the shadows, leaving a hopefully-not-concussed Montgomery to gather himself and his own thoughts.
