Miss Eva...

The voice is familiar, unmistakably so. Her heart leaps into her throat with recognition. Her boots dig into the dirt to force her to stop in her tracks and wide emerald eyes fall on the stranger’s silhouette.

“Priam?”

The last time she had come into contact with him was when she caught him fleeing The League after the revelation of his betrayal. It was an unforgivable betrayal . . . or so Eva thought.

Time and circumstances had weathered the sharp edges of her grudge against her former assistant. Now, faced with the resurrection of those wounds, she found herself less inclined to lunge and claw and tear at him in vengeance. In fact, she found herself conflicted. Eva Morales: the ever emotional and forgiving soul. It’s a softness that would undoubtedly cost her everything some day. It had already cost her her patron. What did she have to show for embodying such morals? Loneliness. An empty bed. A fractured soul. History trying to repeat itself.

Still, she found it incredibly hard, a disservice even, to neglect such moral pillars. If she doesn’t fight for what she believes in, what is she fighting for?

“I’m -” she begins, glancing around to assess what she actually is doing here, “What’re you doing here, Priam?!” she turns the question back around on him, voice dipping into a lower octave, more like a scolding mother than a question of curiosity.

Priam always had a way of making everything seem like it was going to be alright. No matter how stressed she was, how behind they were, or how much pressure weighed on them, he had always made it feel easier. Perhaps it was his carefree attitude or his infectious smile. Even now, amongst the chaos of a war she felt like everything was going to be alright. Tension bleeds from her shoulders and she seems more relaxed. She keeps her arms crossed, also far from her own pokeballs.

Despite the hostile surroundings, her voice still maintains a motherly quality, mostly scolding, as she raises a brow to clearly judge what Priam has to say, “You take over innocent towns in a cruel military campaign for the sole purpose of gaining power? That’s what you normally do?”

Eva shakes her head in an exaggerated fashion, “I don’t believe that. That’s not you, Priam. You’re better than this.”

She knows he is.

“I’m here to help prevent Hoenn from meeting the same fate as Kanto,” she shakes her head again, holding steadfast to her purpose while sorrow tickles the edges of her voice, “I’m sorry, Priam, but I’ll do anything to keep that from happening.”

Her arms fall to her side, not yet moving towards a pokeball but close enough in case one of the grunt behind him decides their boss is taking too long. She purposely ignores the accurate intel that she was not present at the fiasco with Kyogre. It’s by no doubt common knowledge she lost her patron, a void that felt as big as space itself that will never be filed.

That’s the problem with the world: too many sheep blindly following their shepherd. In that moment, for how well she thought she knew Priam, she couldn’t decide if he was just too complacent to question his position, or if he was just that stupid. She didn’t think he was stupid, he was always a great colleague to bounce ideas off of, but she was certainly starting to question that notion of late.

Even now he lets a little information slip. Not that it is groundbreaking information. They had already deduced the reinforcements would not stop at the battle of Petalburg.

“Hoenn is already my home,” She lost a home in Kanto, and simply fled here for shelter with every intention to return, but now she would have an incredibly hard time leaving Hoenn. Despite all the turmoil it’s sowed into her life, it’s undoubtedly home, “Priam, I will not let that happen,” it’s said definitively, but with a false confidence, “I may not be what I once was,”, she refers to her blessings being striped from her, “But you don’t need a god to make a difference.”

A pokeball sits gently between her fingers, delicate but sturdy as she sweeps her arms across her chest. The Friend Ball bursts open and a jagged light brings forward the pokemon she has that most represents justice; a protector in the face of impossible odds, “Your advance ends here.”

Get rid of him? The phrase holds such a negative connotation. There isn’t a world or a situation in which she could imagine herself ‘getting rid of’ Priam Conrad. She’d fight him, she’d drive him off along with the little grunts he commands, but she wouldn’t never be rid of him, truly. He was a part of her life, and will always be.

Of course she remembers the Hisuian Samurott. In fact, it reminds her of another encounter with someone who had betrayed her trust, Elisabeth Fiorelli, and when they studied her Overqwil. Really couldn’t trust anyone, these days.

“I just need you and your grunts to leave,” she subtly begs. She didn’t want to resort of violence but as she claimed earlier, she would if she had to, “Hasn’t there already been enough violence between Petalburg and Sootopolis?”

The CEASELESS EDGE leaves a hazard between them and Priam. Eva frowns, knowing this would impede their progress forward. That was likely the intent.

The Paradox pokemon doesn’t seem to mind. Thalia lunges forward in a gallop, bracing against the foul sting of the spikes that seem to leap towards them. Her head lowers and horns flare to wield a SACRED SWORD to match the other’s.

Ending violence with more violence. It seemed to be a vicious cycle. One she feared would never end. It would be a constant burden, a perpetual sorrow until the end of her days.

“If I must,” she mutters quietly to herself, the words full of regret and uncertainty.

The SACRED SWORDS grind and an eerie screech echoes across the battlefield as the Samurott rips them apart with a strategic DRILL RUN. Thalia steps back, reseting, poised to strike again. They’re forced to pause as when the ICE BEAM mists the field, freezing her joints and making her quite stiff. As much as they desire to chase the retreat, the hazards strewn across the field are too great.

“No, stop!” Eva braces her arm against a rushing cadet, preventing him from lunging into the border of icy mist and dangerous spikes. It seems they would be caught in a stalemate today, neither side making much progress.

Her emerald gaze lingers on where the shadow of Priam and his Samurott had disappeared. Despite the doubt, she couldn’t help but hope to see him again and that it would be under better circumstances. Against all logic, she would never give up on the idealistic vision of a time of peace.
