Isaac swore that his heart would going to beat its way right out of his chest. [break][break]

This was beyond stupid, beyond reckless, beyond dangerous, but Isaac was a man wholeheartedly dedicated to his single-minded purpose. His goals were lofty and ambitious, and he'd be a fool to think that such aims did not come without incredible risk, but Lord, Isaac also knew he'd give anything for that promised end. Anything to bring that distant dream to fruition. [break][break]

That's why, when he had overheard a rather coarse-looking gentleman speak in hushed tones of a certain Underboss at a rundown dive bar, Isaac had interjected himself into the conversation, keenly prying and begging and pleading for whatever scrap of insight he could gather. It was also how, by way of that conversation (and by way of some well-greased palms), that Isaac found himself here, in a dark alleyway, standing beneath the hazy, yellow glow of a nearby streetlamp. [break][break]

This... individual that he was meeting with had information he desperately needed. Plates, he had been told in hushed whispers, that Isaac desperately wanted to see. Isaac was willing to risk being cut down in this very alley and left to rot in Sootopolis' gutters if it meant getting closer to the answers he sought. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, though; his Dusknoir lurked in the shadows just behind him, and that singular red eye swiveled anxiously as they awaited the arrival of their contact.

The Dhelmise sports seaweed the colour of blood, curled possessively around a rusted anchor. Its compass is cracked, yet still stares like an eye into the very soul of Isaac Ward.[break][break]

An assassination attempt, one might fear, especially when another figure steps out from the swirling portal of shadow. The PHANTOM FORCE closes behind Cillian as he, undisguised and looking utterly unbothered, looks Isaac up and down as though surveying a cut of meat.[break][break]

"I'm told you're looking for me."

Sootopolis was his stomping grounds. There had been a time when he'd felt almost a king among these streets.

He swallows the bitterness of compromise.[break][break]

There's an undercurrent of threat that thrums beneath the question. Isaac was not the first. Katherine's hunt had bordered on obsession. Is he working for her?[break][break]

A ghost emerged from another plane, and Isaac was half-convinced that the Pokemon had clawed its way out from the bowels of hell itself. [break][break]

If its leering gaze hadn't frozen him in place, the priest was sure he would have bolted when the ghost's master emerged from an inky void of nothing. He froze like a Sawsbuck caught in a pair of headlights, and he trembled beneath the predatory stare of the man that now stood before him, [break][break]

“I, uhm, I – ” [break][break]

Words that had barely managed to pry their way from Isaac's tight throat were caught by his quivering lips. This was his contact, he realized with horror, a man with some shadowy creature at his beck and call, with a voice as cold as polished steel. The Underboss, the man who had what Isaac so desperately needed, was here. Isaac swallowed against the lump in his throat and tried again, [break][break]

“Well, you see – ” No, his voice still quaked. The priest clutched his hands tightly together in front of him and persisted, [break][break]

“I am Isaac Ward, of Our Father of the Immaculate Creation. My congregation has a special reverence for the Original One, the Creator of All Things.” [break][break]

A factually correct statement, [break][break]

“I understand that the Plates have a special connection to our Creator. So I seek to study them, to understand their Word.” [break][break]

Which was also technically a factually correct statement. Isaac assumed that lying to the Underboss outright would earn him a one-way trip to the bottom of the ocean that surrounded the island city, but maybe deceit by the very slightest omission would be a less egregious trespass. [break][break]

Or, Isaac distantly hoped that perhaps he had found himself in the company of a like-minded individual. His eyes nervously darted from the Underboss to the shadowy Dhelmise at his side, and he wondered if the creature had been blessed by forces not unlike the being he so fervently worshiped.

As Isaac Ward stumbles over his words, Cillian waits with the patience and silence of the grave. He does not blink, the purple rings around his irises glowing softly in the alley's gloom.[break][break]

When religion is mentioned, that patience wanes.[break][break]

He scowls, teeth sharper than they should be.[break][break]

"A reverence I don't share," he spits. "Arceus wants me dead. Why should I entertain its supplicants?"[break][break]

Even before Arceus had marked him for death at the hands of the DRK Triad, his relationship with the so-called Original One had not been a good one. His parents paid lip service to the Church, enforced even its most archaic of doctrines in public while blaspheming behind closed doors.

Venom was spat from behind too-sharp teeth, and Isaac immediately regretted his choice of words. Oh, why couldn't that bastard from the bar have mentioned that this was a sore spot for the man? Perhaps honesty was the best policy, after all, [break][break]

“Because I – !” the priest suddenly blurted out, “Don't quite share that reverence, either.” [break][break]

The truth would either save him or doom him entirely, Isaac realized, when he noticed the way the other man's eyes glittered like amethyst in the dark. Maybe nothing he could say would change whatever this unearthly figure had decided upon, though. The priest was becoming well aware that he was speaking with no ordinary man, even by whatever standards Rocket held their extraordinary Underbosses to, [break][break]

“I was, for a time, one such supplicant, that much is true. But, in my years of studying Arceus' seemingly inscrutable will, I have had a... change in perspective, so to speak.” [break][break]

His clasped hands wrung anxiously, too-white knuckles under pale skin, stretched taut, [break][break]

“And it is also true that I seek to understand Arceus' Word, but for entirely different reasons than what others of my former flock might suspect.” [break][break]

Isaac bowed his head, as though in prayer, [break][break]

“It is not a popular sort of thinking. I'm sure you understand that.”

“Why yes, I suppose I – ” [break][break]

Before he had the chance to explain, Isaac found himself shot down. No, no no no no no. He needed this, he needed those Plates so badly. The priest's eyes suddenly grew wide, little pinpricks of pale green in seas of white, [break][break]

“Please, sir, I beseech you!” [break][break]

Maybe the Underboss simply didn't understand how important this was to him. Isaac suddenly crumpled to the ground, prostrating himself pitifully. His forehead scrapped the grimy street and his voice was muffled when he spoke again, [break][break]

“I – I'll do anything! Anything you ask!” [break][break]

Anything indeed, because nothing was more important to Isaac than achieving his vision for a better world, and the desperation in his voice spoke plainly of that fact.

Isaac's grime-streaked face looked up at the Underboss with an almost uncanny suddenness. Did he say Plates? As in, more than one? Well, even if the priest's intentions were blasphemous at best, how could he say no? [break][break]

“I want to kill god,” Isaac replied simply, as though it were a casual errand rather than a monumental feat, “And replace them with one who might better understand the misbegotten children of Arceus.” [break][break]

But the priest paused for a moment. Context was rather important, but would the Underboss care enough to understand? Maybe it was worth a shot – maybe he was someone that could appreciate Isaac's way of thinking. The priest's eyes remained as wide as ever, but were now tinged by some manic excitement when he continued, [break][break]

“Have you ever considered how irreparably flawed our world is?” [break][break]

He rose just slightly from his groveling bow, lifting himself by his arms. Isaac didn't care that he was still steeped in the filth of the alley; he was suddenly possessed by the all-consuming desire to make the Underboss understand, [break][break]

“I have. I've thought upon it quite a lot, actually. I spent many, many years studying our Creator in the vain hope of understanding why they would leave us in such a wretched world to toil and languish and die.” [break][break]

Isaac suddenly loosed a sharp bark of laughter; wasn't that just the most absurd thing in the world? [break][break]

“It is simply ludicrous, isn't it? That the Orignal One would make us only so that we might wallow in our own shit, like stinking animals, until the end of our days! To leave us to kill and maim each other, to leave us ravaged by disaster after disaster – but, perhaps, you are well-acquainted with disaster. We are in Hoenn, after all.” [break][break]

Ah yes, Hoenn, the centerpiece of a world that was fraying at the seams. There was no better example of how shoddily made Arceus' world was than this.

The narrative that unravels before him is an ancient one, its parchment frayed by time and tide and though the words are faded, they're no longer needed, because this tale is so common that it's been told a thousand times. Etched into the halls of collective memory.[break][break]

Cillian's parents would clutch their pearls at such blasphemy, but so too would they curse the Creator behind closed doors if things didn't go their way.[break][break]

"Arceus wants me dead," Cillian repeats. Despite the softness of his voice, it still echoes. "That feeling is mutual. But do you know anything about the thing you'd replace it with?"[break][break]

Giratina, as he assumed Isaac spoke for, was no unbiased liberator.[break][break]

It had thrown its lot in with the Malevolent, with the League. As much as Cillian wanted to see Arceus burn, he'd delight to see Giratina right beside it.

In truth, Isaac didn't know nearly as much about the Creator's shadow as he did the Creator itself. He had heard its name only in hushed whispers in his youth, had seen images of it stricken from murals and ancient texts. Their mere existence was a dirty little secret that his father and others of his flock refused to acknowledge, until rumors of that looming shadow began to emerge from this very region some years ago, [break][break]

“I-I know that they are, perhaps, the most forlorn of Arceus' children.” [break][break]

Damned from the moment of conception, just as humanity had been, [break][break]

“And that they had once forged an alliance with someone of these lands.” [break][break]

Katherine Fairburne, a name that had cropped up many times in Isaac's recent search, until it hadn't. Where had she gone, he wondered? Had she taken her leave to that umbral land? Did she still bask in the deep shadows of the banished one? Isaac envied her, and mourned the fact that he might never meet her, but that did little for his current predicament. So he continued, [break][break]

“I understand that this someone is gone, but I think such an allyship speaks volumes of my god's willingness to help us. Of their sympathy towards our plight.” [break][break]

Funny, the Malevolent seemed so ill-fitting a title; how could anyone so close to Giratina be anything but Beneficent? [break][break]

“It is my earnest belief that Giratina would raise us from our worldly perdition, if only they were given the opportunity and means to do so.”

This should have presented some sort of moral impasse for Isaac, probably. To even consider allying with forces that so vehemently hated the League was practically treason in and of itself, and it was something that the priest should have been entirely opposed to simply on principal. [break][break]

But Isaac, still somewhat prostrated in this forlorn corner of Sootopolis, couldn't be bothered to consider something so trivial as human allegiances – not when there was so much at stake. The Underboss could offer him knowledge, information, and resources that were crucial to his dark master's return, and for that, Isaac would offer his own mother on a silver platter for just the vaguest chance of getting closer to his own ends. After all, treason was a small price to pay for the chance to make the world a much better place, [break][break]

“It is settled, then; I am with you, if you would have me,” Isaac replied rather matter-of-factly, as if joining a criminal organization were as easy as having a conversation, [break][break]

Hoenn has numbed Cillian to many a shock. Isaac Ward's readiness to commit to Rocket still manages to surprise him.[break][break]

It shows briefly in the widening of his eyes before the Harbinger's characteristic composure wins out. He stares down at this groveling creature and for the first time, dares to regard him with curiosity.[break][break]

He was naught but a nuisance if he worked against them, but if they worked together...?[break][break]

Cillian extends a hand of swirling black shadow. His left.[break][break]

Isaac would need to mind sharp claws if he accepted the assistance, though Cillian makes no effort to draw blood. Unblinking eyes settle heavily on the supplicant.[break][break]

"Impress me." Why be creative when he could study the preacher's mind, instead? You could learn so much about a man when you let him think for himself. "You have three days. Make them count."[break][break]

His smile is a flash of sharp teeth. "I'll find you."
