It warmed Isaac's heart to find such glad company. His smile took on a kinder touch, more genuine than he had felt in some time, at the professor's easy acceptance of his otherworldly companion. His delight was near audible in the gentle rustling and clatter of goods as he concocted his drink at the coffee bar, [break][break]

“Oh, most certainly!” he beamed as he dosed a steaming mug of a medium roast with an alarmingly large pour of pumpkin spice creamer. With just a single sip, Isaac was sure that he was set to ascend to another plane entirely, [break][break]

“This is marvelous – simply marvelous!” [break][break]

He swiveled back on his heel, mug in hand, sporting a milk froth mustache. The priest shamelessly wiped it away with his sleeve and continued as Dehme watched on with wordless embarrassment, [break][break]

“So! Where might we begin, Professor Reyes?” [break][break]

With discussion of the recent Plates, perhaps? Or something else entirely. For as eager as Isaac was to gain some greater insight to the Word of Arceus, nurturing this new connection also took great priority.

He had stood upon the threshold of this place once, but to walk across the plane of the Ultra Deep Sea was an indescribable experience. While his colleague worked with practical efficiency, Isaac merely gazed out upon this under-realm with eyes wide and glimmering, mouth agape in dumbstruck awe, [break][break]

“It's so... beautiful,” he breathed with quiet reverence. [break][break]

His eyes landed on a structure of glimmering crystal, illuminated by some distant light. It reflected so many myriad colors, as stained glass in this cathedral of the deep. To tear his gaze from from it felt like an insurmountable task, but the priest managed it, somehow, to turn to his partner and catch the map that drifted his way, [break][break]

“To the west, you say?” [break][break]

An easy enough way to start their trek, from what he could surmise from these scribblings and the terrain around them. Isaac thought he spied a little winding path they could carve for themselves between a few stagnate pools and limp bits of seaweed, [break][break]

“Then 'west' we shall go. I shall 'take point', as they say.” [break][break]

And down he began, into the dark, into the deep, with the foolhardy bravado of a man ignorant to the perils that lay beyond. He glanced briefly back over his shoulder to return the map with a toss of his own, [break][break]

Whatever was up there was throwing a righteous tantrum. It was almost enough to strike a new chord of fear through the priest as he reached the top of the stairs; surely a mere Pokemon wouldn't have reacted so strongly to just a few words from a couple of prayer books. [break][break]

Or maybe they might have, if they felt their territory was being infringed upon. The Zorua's spine-chilling attack seemed to land on, well, something, Isaac realized, when he saw a shadowy limb and a grinning, golden mouth disappear into an upstairs room. His fears abated somewhat, even as more bits and bobs from nearby shelves came clattering to the floor. If this was a mere beast, than that meant it could be defeated. [break][break]

“Lady Tudor!” he called back, [break][break]

“I think I spied our culprit sneaking off into an upstairs room! Come, let us make haste!” [break][break]

It wasn't bravery that moved the priest from the top of the stairs and down the hall to what appeared to be a spare bedroom. No, it was more of a smug sense of triumph, now that he knew what he was up against. As he stepped into the room, Isaac was confident that he could send this so called “evil spectre” back from whence it came – [break][break]

That was, until, the door slammed shut behind him, and an echoing laugh filled the room he was now trapped in. From the other side, he thought he could hear his Dusknoir loose a cry of frustration; Isaac grabbed the doorknob but found that all he could do was rattle it ineffectively. It was then that the priest suddenly realized that the knob would not turn, [break][break]

“HELP!” he shrieked, all pretense of self-importance or bravery behind him, [break][break]

“The door won't open! I'm trapped!”

Banished, and soon to be restored. Isaac wanted to laugh too, and he almost did, unable to contain the light, flittering giggle that broke free of his broad smile. It was pale and small compared to the booming timbre of the Underboss, compared to that deep thunder that echoed from behind his ribs. But then again, so was Isaac. [break][break]

Just as he had done in that dingy alley in Sootopolis, Isaac took the hand of the Harbinger gladly. His god's love had transformed him; maybe one day, the priest might be lucky enough to share a similar honor, [break][break]

“I suppose that is a rather confounding bit of nomenclature, isn't it? They're not like dinner plates, exactly – more like tablets, or slates, I suppose,” Isaac explained with a chuckle, [break][break]

“Have you ever seen those little Shards that crop up every now and again? The little red, blue, yellow and green ones? Some scholars have suggested that there might be some sort of connection between those bits and bobs and the Plates as well. The young lady was rather kind, wasn't she? It was a shame that their Pokemon were making such a racket. Even now Isaac could have sworn that he saw Dehme skulking off after some other creature that had strayed too close for his liking, [break][break]

“Well, I can assure you that I'm quite alright, but I do appreciate your concern,” he chuckled warmly. [break][break]

He turned and swept an arm out towards the headstones and the low mist that shrouded the ground they rested on. The air was so still, so serene, almost hauntingly so, [break][break]

“It's quite beautiful out here, isn't it? I'm not the Ranger-ly sort, but if I was, I think I'd quite like to have a patrol through here.” [break][break]

Though, in truth, the priest wasn't sure what had him more intrigued; the mysterious noises from above them, or the noble lady's rather fascinating background. Maybe he could press her for more details once they dealt with this rogue spirit or Pokemon or whatever was lurking nearby. Isaac had a job to do, after all. [break][break]

He strode past the noble priestess with a few long strides, moving towards the base of the stairs. Dehme followed shortly after and pressed the Sinnohan prayer book into his trainer's hands. There was another loud thump and a sound of shattering glass from above them again, [break][break]

“I believe you are quite right, Lady Tudor. Something is up there.” [break][break]

He clutched the prayer book in his hands just a little tighter in spite of himself and stole a glance back to his companion. Fascination was quickly giving way to trepidation, but he couldn't simply turn tail now, could he? [break][break]

“I, hm.” Isaac swallowed against the lump that had started to lodge in his throat, “Suppose we ought to see to it then, shouldn't we? Yes, very well then.” [break][break]

He nodded, more to himself than anyone else, and began to take plodding steps up the staircase, [break][break]

The funds that Isaac had amassed to make his pilgrimage to Hoenn were dwindling, and he needed to find a solution to this predicament rather quickly. On the bright side, he had found an opportunity to utilize his rather unique expertise and make a little cash while he was at it. [break][break]

Maybe it was just the season for this sort of thing, or maybe it was more a product of the tenderhearted struggling to cope with recent conflict, but the residents of 112 Cliffview Avenue were convinced that their house on the outskirts of Rustboro was haunted. [break][break]

Of course, Isaac did his due diligence to uncover the possible source of this alleged 'haunting' – maybe it had something to do with the passing of a former Ranger who lived here, who had died during the invasion of the nearby Petalburg. Maybe it had something to do with a shiny new curio on their mantle, a mother of pearl pendant that certainly looked out of place in a home so close to the forests and the mountains. Plundered or plucked or purchased, perhaps, from the water-logged corpse of Sootopolis. [break][break]

Or maybe it was simply the work of a ghost Pokemon gone rogue. That was the most likely explanation, Isaac suspected, as he adjusted the stole that hung down over his chest. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, [break][break]

“Strange,” he mused to himself with curiosity. Weren't the homeowners staying at a hotel tonight? [break][break]

“Dehme, my boy, be a dear and get that for me, if you please.” [break][break]

The nearby Dusknoir, who was absentmindedly studying the religious texts Isaac had brought along with him, gave a rattling sigh of acquiescence. He placed the book down and silently glided over to the front door, opening it wide for whoever had come calling.

Isaac didn't have time to feel sheepish about his misstep when the Underboss turned back to him. His trust was well-placed, for the Glalie still watched the Harbinger with the sort of patience that Isaac didn't think the creature was capable of. Not since its transformation, at least, [break][break]

He probably wasn't bringing anything new to the table, in actuality, but the priest was still eager to present his offering, [break][break]

“Well, you see, my Glalie was perfectly normal until we had an encounter with a rather strange creature. An aggressive one, at that. I believe it was some manner of Ultra Beast.” [break][break]

Unsurprising, considering where they now stood, [break][break]

“They saturated my Pokemon with some sort of toxin. I thought him dead, at first, but instead, he was reborn as the creature you see before you.” [break][break]

Isaac was a man of faith, not a man of science, so the specifics of whatever biological mechanism must have occurred were beyond him. But maybe such a thing could be replicated, with a little trial and error and the acquisition of one of those Ultra Beasts for himself.
