When he turned to face the other blonde, Isaac suddenly realized that something else was amiss. His Dusknoir had all but vanished, agitated whispers and shrieks began to fill the air, and there was another sudden scream and the sound of something breaking. The priest looked all around at some of the panicking guests and their attempts to escape, and turned back to his companions with wide, haunted eyes, [break][break]

“Oh no,” he muttered, and the glass of brandy in his hand shook as though he were at the epicenter of an earthquake, “Oh no, oh dear, oh bother – ” [break][break]

He was beginning to feel rather ill, though whether it was because there was something in his drink or if it was simply his nerves, he could not say. Isaac set the glass down with a trembling hand and nervously looked out to the entrance hall, catching a glimpse of crumbled alabaster, [break][break]

“Exciting, isn't quite the term I would choose to describe this turn of events, Mister St. Claire,” Isaac managed shakily, “But I will not leave either of your sides. There is safety in numbers, after all.” [break][break]

Especially with some of the guests devolving to some manic, animalistic state. Isaac's eyes darted all about the dining hall anxiously, with all the wide-eyed fear of a prey animal.

“Oh, it's not all that warm, depending on the season and how far north you go,” he chuckled, “But at least in Hearthome, we tend to avoid the worst of what winter brings.” [break][break]

And though the girl was probably just thinking out loud, Isaac couldn't help but chime in, as predisposed to chatter as he was, [break][break]

“And that is a rather marvelous question! You see, there was nothing before Arceus came to be – ” [break][break]

But before he could launch into lesson he had taught dozens of times by now, Isaac was interrupted by a sound like shattering glass. He turned just in time to see the haunting face of a Cryogonal and the AURA SPHERE that had collided with it. Isaac tossed another Poke Ball and clicked his tongue at the the offending Togekiss, [break][break]

“Hali, dear, please don't interrupt me. Now, where was I – oh yes! Arceus! Arceus came from an egg, you see, and came from a place and time that existed before places and time existed.” [break][break]

Probably not the most helpful or specific description for someone who lacked the theological context, but Isaac was so delighted to prattle on that he couldn't be bothered to consider such a thing.

Isaac almost imagined that his white-hot fury had somehow managed to scald the Dusknoir as the ghost called again in haunting agony. But no, it was simply the work of that irksome Umbreon again, and that thought made Isaac all the angrier as resplendent MOONLIGHT soothed what few wounds the ghost managed to inflict, [break][break]

His delirious anger was tempered somewhat by the grunt's inquiry, even as Dehme reeled back to level a crackling THUNDER PUNCH at the opposing Dark-type, [break][break]

“Did your geological survey account for the recent battle of Petalburg? Of that rock-creature's upheaval of the earth and the splendorous PLATES it exposed? Surely if some were unearthed then, there should be more waiting just below our feet!”

This should have presented some sort of moral impasse for Isaac, probably. To even consider allying with forces that so vehemently hated the League was practically treason in and of itself, and it was something that the priest should have been entirely opposed to simply on principal. But Isaac, still somewhat prostrated in this forlorn corner of Sootopolis, couldn't be bothered to consider something so trivial as human allegiances – not when there was so much at stake. The Underboss could offer him knowledge, information, and resources that were crucial to his dark master's return, and for that, Isaac would offer his own mother on a silver platter for just the vaguest chance of getting closer to his own ends. After all, treason was a small price to pay for the chance to make the world a much better place, [break][break]

“It is settled, then; I am with you, if you would have me,” Isaac replied rather matter-of-factly, as if joining a criminal organization were as easy as having a conversation, [break][break]

In truth, Isaac didn't know nearly as much about the Creator's shadow as he did the Creator itself. He had heard its name only in hushed whispers in his youth, had seen images of it stricken from murals and ancient texts. Their mere existence was a dirty little secret that his father and others of his flock refused to acknowledge, until rumors of that looming shadow began to emerge from this very region some years ago, [break][break]

“I-I know that they are, perhaps, the most forlorn of Arceus' children.” [break][break]

Damned from the moment of conception, just as humanity had been, [break][break]

“And that they had once forged an alliance with someone of these lands.” [break][break]

Katherine Fairburne, a name that had cropped up many times in Isaac's recent search, until it hadn't. Where had she gone, he wondered? Had she taken her leave to that umbral land? Did she still bask in the deep shadows of the banished one? Isaac envied her, and mourned the fact that he might never meet her, but that did little for his current predicament. Funny, the Malevolent seemed so ill-fitting a title; how could anyone so close to Giratina be anything but Beneficent? [break][break]

Which wasn't a lie, exactly. As the girl's Misdreavous fought an Arctibax, Isaac suddenly noticed a grey shape in the distance. He gave a shrill whistle to Hali, who gave a wordless nod of understanding. The bird YAWNed, and after a brief moment, the floating bell suddenly dropped to the ground with a dull thud. Isaac dug out another Poke Ball before continuing, [break][break]

“I do apologize for being a bother, but do you mind if I share your company for a while? At least, until we return to civilization. There's safety in numbers, after all, and I'm liable to freeze to death if I were left to my own devices out here.” [break][break]

She seemed relatively confident, after all.

Isaac's grime-streaked face looked up at the Underboss with an almost uncanny suddenness. Did he say Plates? As in, more than one? Well, even if the priest's intentions were blasphemous at best, how could he say no? [break][break]

“I want to kill god,” Isaac replied simply, as though it were a casual errand rather than a monumental feat, “And replace them with one who might better understand the misbegotten children of Arceus.” [break][break]

But the priest paused for a moment. Context was rather important, but would the Underboss care enough to understand? Maybe it was worth a shot – maybe he was someone that could appreciate Isaac's way of thinking. The priest's eyes remained as wide as ever, but were now tinged by some manic excitement when he continued, [break][break]

“Have you ever considered how irreparably flawed our world is?” [break][break]

He rose just slightly from his groveling bow, lifting himself by his arms. Isaac didn't care that he was still steeped in the filth of the alley; he was suddenly possessed by the all-consuming desire to make the Underboss understand, [break][break]

“I have. I've thought upon it quite a lot, actually. I spent many, many years studying our Creator in the vain hope of understanding why they would leave us in such a wretched world to toil and languish and die.” [break][break]

Isaac suddenly loosed a sharp bark of laughter; wasn't that just the most absurd thing in the world? [break][break]

“It is simply ludicrous, isn't it? That the Orignal One would make us only so that we might wallow in our own shit, like stinking animals, until the end of our days! To leave us to kill and maim each other, to leave us ravaged by disaster after disaster – but, perhaps, you are well-acquainted with disaster. We are in Hoenn, after all.” [break][break]

Ah yes, Hoenn, the centerpiece of a world that was fraying at the seams. There was no better example of how shoddily made Arceus' world was than this.

Isaac nodded cordially as the other guests introduced themselves, and he smiled, [break][break]

“Pleasure to meet the both of you; Mr. St. Claire, Lady Tudor – ” [break][break]

Suddenly, there was a scream, and Isaac's face grew as pale as a sheet. He quickly turned from those in his company to his Dusknoir, eyes growing wide with fear, [break][break]

“Good heavens, what in the devil was that?” [break][break]

The answer would present itself shortly after, when dining room doors creaked open, and a pack of smiling, ghostly faces beckoned the guests inside. Isaac gave a great tremendous sigh, which turned to a huff of laughter, which turned into a fit of nervous giggles, [break][break]

“Oh goodness, that scared the life out of me.” [break][break]

Which made Mr. St Claire's offer of his arm all the more appealing. Good to be in the presence of such a strapping young lad when this house and its otherworldly inhabitants were prone to such mischief, [break][break]

“Quite the gentleman, I see,” he chuckled with real, good humor as he linked his arm with paxton concordas's, “With charms such as that, I'd follow you anywhere, my new friend.” [break][break]

And the statement was punctuated with a playful wink for good measure. Whether Elise Calcifet chose to join their merry band or not, Isaac would accompany his fellow blonde to the dining hall, and though his appetite had left him, the priest couldn't help but ogle the curiously themed tables, [break][break]

“What a clever little arrangement.” [break][break]

He relinquished his hold on paxton concordas and surreptitiously glanced back over his shoulder. Dehme, having followed this strange band from short distance behind, quickly passed off the previous plate of refreshments to another wandering geist. The priest eyed the savory offerings of cheese and prosciutto, and decided that they would be his utmost priority once the last of the nerves had finally left him. Though there was a quicker remedy to that, he realized, [break][break]

“Oh my, is that brandy?” [break][break]

No sooner than a passing Dusclops had drifted past the Durin table with a tray of glittering glasses did Isaac sweep one up for himself with a grin. This would be the perfect thing to fortify his spirit.

Isaac had never known Dehme to pull his punches before, but there really was a first time for everything. The Umbreon's CHARMs really did seem to have an affect on him, and as the fist collided with the Eeeveelution's surprisingly sturdy hide, it was with no greater force than Isaac himself could probably muster, [break][break]

“Dehme, you fool!” the priest called shrilly, “Fight, you terrible moron! Don't just sit there and play patty-cake with the creature, for God's sake!” [break][break]

He suddenly turned to the Rocket as they chimed in, and Isaac's fury mounted further. His eyes were wild and furious, and he raised his arm to point an accusatory finger in their direction, [break][break]

“And you!” [break][break]

As he spoke, the Dusknoir gave another haunting call as more ghost-light danced at his fingertips. This would be no punch, however; instead, luminous WILL O WISPs hung in the air for a moment before they were launched towards the Umbreon, [break][break]

“You are a simpleton! How can you be so blind to the treasure so tantalizing close to us both? To the Word of Arceus, the Original One! The Creator!” [break][break]

Because they had to be here, they just had to. Otherwise, Isaac had stuck his neck out for nothing, and that was a truth he refused to face in this moment.

A disturbance on Mt. Pyre? Could it be? [break][break]

Well, no, not exactly. It turned out that the otherworldly figures shuffling about the mountain graveyard had a far more mundane origin than Isaac would have cared for, [break][break]

“How disappointing,” he mused to no one in particular. Certainly not to the Bronzong at his side, who watched the milling foxes with a dispassionate expression. [break][break]

“Though I suppose there is that droll expression about lemons and lemonade.” [break][break]

Suddenly, there was a noise from a tall patch of grass nearby, past some jagged and neglected headstones, shrouded in thick mist. Isaac suddenly turned toward it, and screamed at what he saw. [break][break]

[break][break]

A figure sailed toward him, all pale white face and snarling lips and bulging eyes and pointed teeth. The inscrutable bell rushed forward to meet it, and with a tremendous cry, hollow and echoing like the ringing of a bonshō, the Pokemon crashed into the figure with a HEAVY SLAM. [break][break]

By the time Isaac realized what had happened, the demonic figure was struggling to scramble to its feet, and its fearful illusion melted away with a shimmer, as though the creature had shed some sort of unearthly hide. The Zoroark that took its place hissed angrily but impotently, having been staggered by the blow. Isaac readied a Poke Ball, [break][break]

“Good thinking, Agnes!” he called cheerfully, as though he hadn't been trembling in fear for his life just a few minutes ago, “It wouldn't do to leave this place empty-handed.” [break][break]

And so the Poke Ball went sailing with a gentle toss, though as it shook and the priest awaited confirmation of his capture, Isaac couldn't help but glance over his shoulder. He was less than eager to run into another ghastly illusion on this mountain. [break]

Isaac decided he liked the other man from the moment he watched the guest's nimble fingers save a wayward olive from its floor-bound fate. To be nimble and charming was one incredible combination. With the last of his baguette gone, Isaac smiled wide at him, [break][break]

“Oh yes, the invitations were quite curious, weren't they?” [break][break]

He had found his own tucked into an interior coat pocket, and now that he thought about it, Isaac wasn't quite sure how it had gotten there. Maybe the other guests had found theirs in a similar fashion. There was also the matter of the strange occurrences rumored to have taken place in these halls – a fact Isaac had almost entirely forgotten about in his quest to sate his voracious appetite, [break][break]

“Though I suppose this whole place is rather curious, now that you mention it.” [break][break]

But before he could gossip further about the mansion's sordid history, another guest joined them. Isaac nodded and smiled wider at the rather regal-looking young woman in all her finery, [break][break]

“Good evening, my lady,” he offered in greeting to the young woman before continuing to address both of his fellow guests, [break][break]

“And I suppose I am of a similar mind, my friends. While I am keen to enjoy the party, I am keener still to uncover what sorts of secrets this place might hold. Who wouldn't be drawn to such a history, hm?” [break][break]

Then, something occurred to Isaac, and in an instant, his face flushed with genuine embarrassment, [break][break]

Well, this was certainly a less than ideal outcome. It was a shame that the stranger couldn't be reasoned with, but at the very least, maybe Isaac could make it out of this scrape without seeing too much harm. Dehme launched his CONFUSE RAY, and Isaac suddenly lunged down to grab the ghost's mud-caked Poke Ball, [break][break]

“You'll regret this!” Isaac shrieked as he scrambled his way out of the pit with surprising haste, “This is rather important work, you know!” [break][break]

Important indeed, because those Plates were the key to bringing about a new, glorious world. Of course this mere grunt couldn't possibly understand that; it was a shame, it truly was. [break][break]

It was also a shame that his Dusknoir's attack had apparently no effect on the Umbreon or its master. It confounded and frustrated the priest all at once. He leered at the stranger as he scrambled back; the audacity of this person! [break][break]

“Dehme, my friend, it appears we've been met by some true Hoennian hospitality.” [break][break]

Any thoughts of fleeing left Isaac for a moment in the wake of this slight, [break][break]

“I suppose we ought to repay it in kind.” [break][break]

The Dusknoir gave a haunting, rattling cry of assent. He suddenly lunged towards the Umbreon with a raised fist, which, in an instant, suddenly burst into eerie ghost-flame. Dehme moved to strike the opposing Pokemon with a FIRE PUNCH while his master watched on, narrowed eyes reflecting the unearthly flames.
