Beautiful ghost-light descended upon him, and Isaac delighted in the way it bathed their environs with its pale, unearthly light. It was almost a little disappointing that its source was something so mundane, [break][break]

“Oh, hullo!” [break][break]

He peered at the Ranger's phone when the screen was presented to him. His excitement abated somewhat, but he tried not to seem too dour when he looked from the device back to its owner, [break][break]

“A pleasure to meet you, Juliana.” [break][break]

He offered a hand to shake as his Dusknoir drifted away, distracted by something moving just outside of the priest's periphery, [break][break]

“My apologies if I gave you cause for concern. I'm not in any danger – I think I just found myself a little caught up in the atmosphere of this place.” [break][break]

From somewhere behind him, Isaac heard an unearthly, rattling cry, and the sound of splintering wood. He suddenly spun around to see Dehme standing over what looked like... a fallen tree? No, it was a Pokemon, the priest realized, when he saw the single eye of yet another cyclopean spirit. [break][break]

He tossed a Poke Ball to it before turn back to Juliana a bit sheepishly, [break][break]

“Oh dear, I suppose I've upset one of the residents. My apologies.”

He was only vaguely aware of some wild Pokemon that had begun to make their way over, too, apparently having their attention drawn by the strange man. The Togekiss watched them apprehensively, but did not move to strike, [break][break]

“I am Isaac Ward, of Our Father of Immaculate Creation,” he began reflexively, “And I have found myself quite lost. Could you kindly point me in the direction of Petalburg?” [break][break]

An iron pachyderm strode past and momentarily eyed the man with some curiosity. He paid her no mind, though, and soon the elephant strode away into the frozen wastes.

Before he had the chance to explain, Isaac found himself shot down. No, no no no no no. He needed this, he needed those Plates so badly. The priest's eyes suddenly grew wide, little pinpricks of pale green in seas of white, [break][break]

“Please, sir, I beseech you!” [break][break]

Maybe the Underboss simply didn't understand how important this was to him. Isaac suddenly crumpled to the ground, prostrating himself pitifully. His forehead scrapped the grimy street and his voice was muffled when he spoke again, [break][break]

“I – I'll do anything! Anything you ask!” [break][break]

Anything indeed, because nothing was more important to Isaac than achieving his vision for a better world, and the desperation in his voice spoke plainly of that fact.

Oh, blast it all! Isaac was late, quite late indeed! [break][break]

He muttered a curse to himself as he stepped onto the mansion's grounds and strode up to its doors at a frantic pace, narrowly avoiding shoulder-checking some young stranger (kyle lopez ) along the way,[break][break]

“Dehme, my friend, do keep up!” he called to his Dusknoir from over his shoulder. The priest adjusted his stately black and gold mask with a frustrated huff – it was important that it stay on, if he were to be granted entry to the festivities. He simply loved a good party, after all, and the thought of missing out on the full scope of it vexed him terribly. [break][break]

By the time he had been allowed inside by a rather stately-looking Gengar manning the door, Dehme was at his side, and Isaac's eyes swept all about the grand entrance hall with a singular focus on his first order of business, [break][break]

“Now, where are those refreshments?” [break][break]

His stomach growled loudly in assent. Locating the hors d'oeuvres was a matter of great importance, after all. The priest glanced around and saw all manner of people congregating by a table with food, all apparently as hungry as he was (or so he assumed), [break][break]

“Oh, do excuse me!” he called loudly, announcing his presence as he filled his plate with breads and meats and cheeses, “I'll be out of your hair in just a moment – oh, pardon my reach, but I simply must have some of those olives.” [break][break]

Once his plate was damn-near overflowing, he gave a cordial nod to those varied mask-clad folks (and his Dusknoir offered an apologetic gesture for the buffoonery of his master), and the priest scanned the room again for a place to settle in and gorge himself. His eyes drifted to a lone figure at the periphery of the main hall, and Isaac smiled to himself. Ah yes, what better way to savor a meal than with some company? [break][break]

“Hullo!” the priest called boisterously as he strode over to an unfamiliar gentleman. His smile morphed into a wide grin full of glittering white teeth as Isaac found into a spot near paxton concordas , [break][break]

“Are you enjoying the festivities thus far? I'm afraid I've only just arrived, myself.” [break][break]

He took a thick slice of baguette from his plate and tucked into it voraciously. The Dusknoir that accompanied him loosed a rattling, unearthly sigh of disgust.

When an unfamiliar voice broke Isaac out of his dream-like daze, he was beyond startled; he was down-right frightened, and as such, he loosed a rather shrill scream in reply, [break][break]

“Good heavens!” he shrieked indignantly as he scrambled about his muddy little hole. Isaac peered up at the incredulous stranger, his face deathly pale and his eyes as wide as saucers, [break][break]

“I-it's rather rude to sneak up on someone, you know! You nearly scared the life out of me!” [break][break]

Oh, but now he was in quite the pickle, wasn't he? But he couldn't just stop now; there could be a Plate just under his feet! Maybe he could appeal to this stranger in some way. Isaac looked from them, to his Dusknoir (who simply stared back at him with one leering eye), and back again, [break][break]

“But,” Isaac continued with a cautious but far more even-toned voice, “Is it possible that I might stay just a little longer? I promise, I won't be a bother to either you or your associates – I have no qualm with Rocket, not at all! I just have a bit more digging to do, and – ” [break][break]

Dehme slowly drifted back as his master spoke. He and his trainer were not the most proficient of fighters, but both were experts in the subtle art of obfuscation. Prattling talk, telling people just the exact thing they wanted to hear, all to disguise one's true intentions, to cloak a glinting dagger in the dark. Though the ghost carried no such blade, his single eye glowed as he conjured the beginnings of a CONFUSE RAY, ready to befuddle the encroaching stranger and their Umbreon companion should things go south.

Venom was spat from behind too-sharp teeth, and Isaac immediately regretted his choice of words. Oh, why couldn't that bastard from the bar have mentioned that this was a sore spot for the man? Perhaps honesty was the best policy, after all, [break][break]

“Because I – !” the priest suddenly blurted out, “Don't quite share that reverence, either.” [break][break]

The truth would either save him or doom him entirely, Isaac realized, when he noticed the way the other man's eyes glittered like amethyst in the dark. Maybe nothing he could say would change whatever this unearthly figure had decided upon, though. The priest was becoming well aware that he was speaking with no ordinary man, even by whatever standards Rocket held their extraordinary Underbosses to, [break][break]

“I was, for a time, one such supplicant, that much is true. But, in my years of studying Arceus' seemingly inscrutable will, I have had a... change in perspective, so to speak.” [break][break]

His clasped hands wrung anxiously, too-white knuckles under pale skin, stretched taut, [break][break]

“And it is also true that I seek to understand Arceus' Word, but for entirely different reasons than what others of my former flock might suspect.” [break][break]

Isaac bowed his head, as though in prayer, [break][break]

“It is not a popular sort of thinking. I'm sure you understand that.”

When Isaac had studied overseas in Kalos, he struggled to bridge the gulf he often felt between himself and his fellow students. He had chalked it up to the language barrier at the time, because he wasn't self-aware enough to understand its actual source, but even today that little excuse still brought him some comfort. [break][break]

This also meant that when he had finally started to learn a little Kalosian himself, it did little in the way of helping him make friends, but it had been a fascinating little venture. One particular idiom came to mind as he wiped some sweat from his cheek and left a streak of mud in its place. [break][break]

L'appel du vide; the call of the void. [break][break]

Is that what had brought him here, skirting the edges of hostile territory, digging a knee-deep hole that could very well serve as his own grave? That was a possibility, certainly, because there was something about being so tantalizing close to something perilous that made his heart race. [break][break]

But, in much the same way that he had written off the social failings of his youth, Isaac instead chose to dismiss the feeling and focus on what he asserted was his real reason for being here; the Plates. Oh, those marvelous, wondrous Plates! Surely there had to be some left here, somewhere. They had popped up in the nearby Petalburg, hadn't they? Maybe there were some that had been left behind, just waiting for him to find them beneath the muck. [break][break]

The thought made him positively giddy, enough so that he couldn't help but giggle a little to himself as he dug, half with the shovel he had brought with him, and half with his bare hands when that manic bit of excitement surged to ever-increasing heights. The thought also distracted him from the presence of someone drawing near, even as his nearby Dusknoir gave a deep, haunting cry of warning, its old Poke Ball lost somewhere in the grime at his trainer's feet.

A ghost emerged from another plane, and Isaac was half-convinced that the Pokemon had clawed its way out from the bowels of hell itself. [break][break]

If its leering gaze hadn't frozen him in place, the priest was sure he would have bolted when the ghost's master emerged from an inky void of nothing. He froze like a Sawsbuck caught in a pair of headlights, and he trembled beneath the predatory stare of the man that now stood before him, [break][break]

“I, uhm, I – ” [break][break]

Words that had barely managed to pry their way from Isaac's tight throat were caught by his quivering lips. This was his contact, he realized with horror, a man with some shadowy creature at his beck and call, with a voice as cold as polished steel. The Underboss, the man who had what Isaac so desperately needed, was here. Isaac swallowed against the lump in his throat and tried again, [break][break]

“Well, you see – ” No, his voice still quaked. The priest clutched his hands tightly together in front of him and persisted, [break][break]

“I am Isaac Ward, of Our Father of the Immaculate Creation. My congregation has a special reverence for the Original One, the Creator of All Things.” [break][break]

A factually correct statement, [break][break]

“I understand that the Plates have a special connection to our Creator. So I seek to study them, to understand their Word.” [break][break]

Which was also technically a factually correct statement. Isaac assumed that lying to the Underboss outright would earn him a one-way trip to the bottom of the ocean that surrounded the island city, but maybe deceit by the very slightest omission would be a less egregious trespass. [break][break]

Or, Isaac distantly hoped that perhaps he had found himself in the company of a like-minded individual. His eyes nervously darted from the Underboss to the shadowy Dhelmise at his side, and he wondered if the creature had been blessed by forces not unlike the being he so fervently worshiped.

This most hallowed of places was simply... incredible. [break][break]

When Isaac had first decided to depart for Hoenn, he had done an exhaustive amount of research. The region was home to all manner of abnormalities, from disasters to the existence of avatars to its war-torn history, but Mt. Pyre had become a place of particular interest to him after reading of its association with that most worthy of Arceus' creations. This was a place of the dead, of unearthly calm, but most importantly, this was a place where his messiah had once tread, where echoes of it's presence could still sometimes be felt, and that fact alone filled Isaac with manic excitement. [break][break]

His eyes were as wide as saucers as he desperately took in every last detail. Grey tombstones; cold rock; a low mist perpetually slinking above the wet grass. To be here was to be closer to the divine than he had ever come before, even in all of his years of studying the Original One and its inscrutable will. It solidified to Isaac that his cherished god was more worthy than Arceus ever could be, and that his path of righteous restoration was one he could never stray from. [break][break]

Suddenly, Isaac was broken from his reverie by the sound of footsteps. He turned and feverishly peered all around him. A Dusknoir hovered close behind, a diligent shadow, [break][break]

“Hello?” His voice cracked with equal parts trepidation and excitement, “Is someone there?” [break][break]

Maybe they were a friend, a like-minded individual. The thought made him smile wide, exposing a maw of glittering white teeth, [break][break]

“Please, come out. No harm will come to you, I swear it.”

Huh, this wasn't Petalburg. [break][break]

Isaac squinted out onto the expanse of white and frowned. This place was weirdly cold for the tropical region, even if they were closing in on fall. He looked down at the crinkled map in his hands, [break][break]

“Hali, dear, which direction is north again?” [break][break]

A Togekiss had settled in a patch of snow next to him, and her white feathers had floofed up to trap whatever warm air she could. In this state, she looked like some sort of living snowball, and she cooed with uncertainty from her cocoon of down, [break][break]

“Oh, that's not good. I suppose that means we're lost, then.” [break][break]

Which was frustrating, because he just had to get his hands on one of those Plates he had been hearing so much about. Sure, his intended destination had been taken over by Rocket and was a veritable war zone, but fortune favored the bold, did it not? [break][break]

Still, Isaac would have to get his bearings first if he had any hope of succeeding in that venture. He looked up from his map again, and squinted again, until his eyes settled upon a figure in the distance. The source of his salvation, perhaps? [break][break]

“'Lo!” he called, waving his arms to make himself as visible as possible, “Yes, you! Over here!” [break][break]

There was a solid chance that this person would just think him a raving lunatic and leave him to his fate, but that was a gamble that Isaac was willing to take.

It was dreadful, really, what had happened to this city. [break][break]

Isaac groaned with exertion as he hauled away a shattered beam of what he assumed must have been the rafter of a house. His body was soft and unused to this sort of drudgery, but that didn't mean he was going to shy away from what needed to be done. People had lost their homes, their livelihoods, due to some terrible squabbling and the wrath of an angry god. It made Isaac's blood boil when he thought of how heartless that child of Arceus had been; it made his heart break when he witnessed the aftermath of it all firsthand. [break][break]

So here he was, toiling away under a late autumn sun to assist with the cleanup in an act that was not unlike some of the work he had done for his congregation back home. It was a lot more physically demanding, sure, and sometimes he got the impression that some of the folks here were watching him with some intense scrutiny, but it would be worth it, surely, to bring some peace to these weary souls. [break][break]

Next to him, his Dusknoir similarly toiled, hefting bits of warped metal and shattered stone away to make room for something new to be built. Isaac paused for a moment to rest once his own bit of refuse had been discarded, until the sight of something rather curious caught his eye, just behind the crumbled wall of the devastated building their work centered around. [break][break]

Was that.. an eye? Surely it couldn't have been anything else, Isaac reasoned, when he saw the wide expanse of its white sclera and the comparatively small point of its black pupil. Yes, it was an eye, connected to a noodley sort of body, watching him with what he assumed was curiosity. [break][break]

Suddenly, Isaac's eyes widened with manic recognition. It was an Unown, here! Right here, right in front of him! One of the many eyes of the Original One itself! This was monumental – this was incredible! And this was an opportunity that Isaac couldn't pass up. [break][break]

The priest suddenly bolted towards the Pokemon with a manic sort of fixation, leaving his Dusknoir behind as he vaulted over the short wall with the sort of alacrity one might expect to see in racing Boltund rather than a somewhat portly man such as himself. The Unown made a sound, something akin to a fearful squeak, and zipped away down a nearby alley, [break][break]

“No, wait, come back!” he called as he followed in hot pursuit, “Please, I don't mean you any harm!” [break][break]

It was easy enough to say, but perhaps harder to convince the creature of. After all, who wouldn't flee from this priest running as though possessed, eyes so wide that they looked more white than green?

Isaac swore that his heart would going to beat its way right out of his chest. [break][break]

This was beyond stupid, beyond reckless, beyond dangerous, but Isaac was a man wholeheartedly dedicated to his single-minded purpose. His goals were lofty and ambitious, and he'd be a fool to think that such aims did not come without incredible risk, but Lord, Isaac also knew he'd give anything for that promised end. Anything to bring that distant dream to fruition. [break][break]

That's why, when he had overheard a rather coarse-looking gentleman speak in hushed tones of a certain Underboss at a rundown dive bar, Isaac had interjected himself into the conversation, keenly prying and begging and pleading for whatever scrap of insight he could gather. It was also how, by way of that conversation (and by way of some well-greased palms), that Isaac found himself here, in a dark alleyway, standing beneath the hazy, yellow glow of a nearby streetlamp. [break][break]

This... individual that he was meeting with had information he desperately needed. Plates, he had been told in hushed whispers, that Isaac desperately wanted to see. Isaac was willing to risk being cut down in this very alley and left to rot in Sootopolis' gutters if it meant getting closer to the answers he sought. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, though; his Dusknoir lurked in the shadows just behind him, and that singular red eye swiveled anxiously as they awaited the arrival of their contact.

The coat draped around his shoulders did little to stave off the chill carried by the first rains of autumn, but Isaac hardly noticed. He had quite the exciting appointment to keep, after all, and the giddy excitement bubbling in his chest warmed him more profoundly than any coat ever could have. [break][break]

The Dusknoir at his side easily kept pace as the priest made his way to the Pokemon League's headquarters, and the Pokemon was hot on his heels as his master swept through the front doors and chattered excitedly with someone at reception, before he quickly made his way to the direction of the laboratories. The ghost thankfully remained close by, close enough to catch his trainer with a firm grip on Isaac's arm as the man's slick shoes nearly flew his feet out from under him, and was there still to help straighten the lapels on Isaac's jacket before the man traipsed through a new pair of doors with a broad smile plastered on his face, [break][break]

“Hullo!” Isaac called cheerily, “Yes, yes, it most certainly was! And might I say, it is an honor to make your acquaintance, Professor Reyes!” [break][break]

He took the offered hand and shook it with overenthusiastic gusto, before relinquishing his hold to gesture to himself and his Pokemon companion, [break][break]

“Isaac Ward, of Our Father of Immaculate Creation. And this is my companion, Demhe.” [break][break]

The Dusknoir waved, and Isaac leaned towards the young woman, voice lowered to a conspiratorial whisper, [break][break]

“I do realize that it might have been rather uncouth of me to have brought a Pokemon onto the premises. I shall dismiss him with haste, if you wish.” [break][break]

But before allowing the woman a chance to answer, Isaac suddenly looked toward the coffee station, as though he had only just realized it was there, [break][break]

“Ooo, don't mind if I do!” [break][break]

And off he went again, no doubt to concoct something far more sugary and caffeinated than what such an excitable man should probably have been drinking.
