Though their Sootopolis abode was still in an unlivable state following Kyogre's rampage, Cillian still spends the majority of his time in the former-Rocket city. He works there, eats there, patrols those streets.[break][break]

But when he has to go home to sleep, to spend time with his husband, he's stuck here.[break][break]

In Petalburg. In a stolen apartment that, in spite of the underbosses best efforts to scrub the place clean of the stale scent of mothballs and old people, still didn't feel like theirs. His 'office' had gone from the spacious, book-scented den in Sootopolis to being crammed into a bedroom closet. None of the appliances were from the last several decades.[break][break]

He hates it here. But clover matamata's words held merit: Home is where your people are.

Temp was here, in this apartment.[break]
Rocket were here, in this city.[break]
So this, for now, was home.

Right now, the apartment smells not of moths and potpourri or even copious amounts of cleaning supply, but fish. While Tempest Quinn keeps busy in the kitchen, Cillian goes to answer a knock at the door. Poor clover matamata might get a bit of a start when it opens, given Cillian's choice of a plague doctor costume, but he's quick to lift the mask and offer a smile when he recognizes her. He steps aside to permit their entry, explaining, "Figured some of the kids might come by for candy. We've had a few so far."

It wasn't hard to figure out which apartment building they lived in, given that Lugia was currently curled up on the roof like a slumbering gargoyle. Any kids brave enough to enter the building were well deserving of their treats, Cillian thought.[break][break]

"Don't mind the decor," he remarks, gesturing to couches and chairs since freed of their dust covers and allowed to breath. "We didn't choose it, I promise."

Tempest hums to himself as he cooks. The mask from his costume is laying on a counter, discarded; an apron sits over top the thin black and bone top he's got on. It's not the most creative and intensive, not like the matching fey costumes he and Cillian Quinn wore last year, but it's nice to feel some fragment of normalcy after everything.[break][break]

The kitchen door slides open in just enough time for Temp to catch both the tail-end of what Cillian says and to see clover matamata come inside. Nodding to them, Tempest gives a grin and goes to flop down on the very-plush-yet-somehow-hard couch. [break][break]

"Don't let Cil lie to you, this is his style. He personally picked out, uh..." Tempest pauses before pointing to a knick-knack cabinet they hadn't cleaned out yet. It's filled with little, tacky glass horse pokemon. "All those. Every one of them."[break][break]

Tempest nods sagely when he says it, proud of his lie.[break][break]

"Dinner isn't done yet but it shouldn't be long." Tempest motions to one of the ugly paisley chairs. "Have a seat! We're pretty sure it won't bite."

The Lugia above the apartment building might as well have been a flare with how well it signaled his destination. [break][break]

Of course, not even the legendary's presence as a portent could have prepared her for the plague doctor mask that welcomed her. She does not squeak at the sight of it, thank you very much, but she's very relieved all the same that Cillian removes it. "Very scary," she commends. "I picked something spooky, too." Her bat costume could be described as cute by anyone who didn't know how freaky Noibats (and Zubats, and related creatures) were, but she knew better. [break][break]

She steps inside, eager to see what Cillian's warning her about. The decor is a choice, but she fully believes it was not chosen by either of them. Clover scrunches their nose up at Temp's invitation to look at the ugly knickknacks, and while it's clear he is only playing around, she finds the perfect opportunity for snark - and the glint in her eye betrays it. "Well, he picked you didn't he?" They stick their nose up for snobby emphasis. "He didn't know the coolest Hoyeon was right here the whole time."[break][break]

She offers an exaggerated flourish. Then, they remember the tall tupperware in their hand. "Mom knew I was going out for a dinner tonight and made pickled roots. It's an acquired taste - acquired by the coolest of cool kids, of course - but I won't be offended if you don't like it." They would tell their mom the oddish and bellsprout dish was well-received regardless. They offer the tupperware before taking a (tentative!) seat in a paisley chair.

Cillian, who's sister kept a great many bats and who'd raised a Zubat from a tiny, helpless little runt in Kanto, does not find Clover's costume scary. Cool, yes. Adorable? Absolutely.[break][break]

He doesn't tell her that, of course.[break][break]

Instead, he says, "Wicked. Like a real bloodsucker."[break][break]

Noibat were fruit bats, but Zubat totally counted.[break][break]

Wrinkling his nose when Temp gestures to the cabinet full of glass horses, he protests, "Hell no, my mother would love those. I've gotta hate them on principle."[break][break]

He doesn't often mention his mother, either of his parents, around Temp, so the casual mention of the witch who'd raised him should be proof enough of how comfortable he feels around Clover. They're Hoyeon. That makes them family, the good kind of family.[break][break]

"He just called you tacky." Cillian dramatically slaps a hand over his heart. "Are you gonna stand for that?"[break][break]

Accepting the tupperware and curiously popping it open, Cillian's eyes water at the strong pickled smell. It's not terrible, he likes pickled things, but it does hit like a truck.[break][break]

He doesn't hesitate to try one, either. "Not bad," is pronounced, with a shrug. "Your mom know who you're with?"[break][break]

Not because Clover's technically still a kid, but because of who they are.[break][break]

Cillian sits down in an armchair that bears the decades-old imprint of someone else's ass, wood digging uncomfortably against his tailbone. He sets the roots on the table next to a bowl of candy (theirs, thankfully, and not further relics of the previous homeowners).[break][break]

The apartment is too small to have all of the dogs crowding the space, but an Alcremie does sense an opportunity to feed a new guest. Cillian smirks beneath a humorous revelation. "Ah. Clover, this is Clover." Which one did he address first? They'd never know. "Although it looks like we're going with berries, tonight." He accepts a plump Oran berry covered in rainbow cream. "Thanks, Clover."

At the absolute sick burn that clover matamata gives, Tempest groans and makes to cover his heart as if stabbed. He lolls his head back dramatically, faking his death.[break][break]

"Aw, come on. In my own home?"[break][break]

He gives a dramatic sigh. However, at the promise of pickles followed by the pungent smell, Temp perks back up. He eagerly reaches over to grab one when Cillian Quinn sits it close enough, popping one in his mouth. He whistles, crunching it between his teeth and face puckering up. He doesn't even hesitate to go for another.[break][break]

"These'll go great with the fish!" Temp chews quietly to himself, nodding as Cil continued the conversation.[break][break]

As soon as Clover would sit down to meet the other Clover, there would be the quick thuds of paws on the ground and little claws scrabbling on carpet. An Eevee would appear at the mouth of the hallway, an evil little smirk on her cute face. Honed in on Clover, Hati would lash her tail once, twice, before darting forward and launching herself at the youth.[break][break]

To very forcefully make herself cozy in their lap.

Getting a rise out of Temp brings a goofy grin to their face, but they're especially happy to see how well-received the pickled roots are. [break][break]

"Mom thinks I'm out trick-or-treating alone. Well, with Archen's supervision." Clover's tangle of lies to their parents was manageable for now, but they could only invent so many activities before Mom wondered what Clover truly did. But his parents and his Sachem would not come around to understand her vision to gather up the elemental giants for the betterment of Hoenn. If that got out, along with the knowledge that she aligned with Rocket to achieve this goal, there would undoubtedly be large consequences. [break][break]

The situation was more precarious than Clover gave it credit for, but it was easy to avoid examining the web of lies they'd strung together. Easier still when they were met face-to-face with a berry-laden pokemon. "I've never seen an alcremie in person before," she confessed as she grabbed a cherri from its form. "And I didn't know they could be so colorful!"[break][break]

Despite the gaudy furniture, it seemed Cillian and Tempest both had lots of cool stuff. She'd need to ask to see more of their pokemon sometime. But just as they got comfortable, Hati charged into their arms and forced a comfortable spot on their lap. "Aw, you're a cuddler?" Clover scooped the eevee into her arms and gave it a squeeze. "Only my Tropius wants to cuddle, and he's a little too big for it." Archen liked to stay close, but he preferred to cling to Clover than to be clung to. [break][break]

Clover's mouth watered at the scent of fish that filled the room, but their mind had returned to the question about their mom. "I might need a better cover story soon, given how often I'm out. I think I'll come up with some kinda part-time job. I want to visit ultra space more and see if I can tolerate the rough environment there, but those trips can take a while." They really, really wanted to discover Fang and bring it back to their world.

"They're usually not," he informs him of Alcremie. "I did some research, and apparently it's an unusual pattern. She used to just be pink."

He dips a pecha berry into the colourful cream, savoring its sweetness.

There's a moment of tension when Hati bounds into the room, Cillian uncertain of what the devilish little Eevee might do. He relaxes as Hati simply nests in Clover's lap.

"She's a menace, is what she is." It's said with fondness.
[break][break]

"Hm. You could tell her you're taking contract work with the League. Could help explain away all manner of little trips, given the mess that Hoenn's been lately."
