She was not superstitious. She was, however, well aware that local myths, ghost stories, and old wives' tales all held some sliver of truth. They were all easily discarded, except she knew that valuable information could be stored at the heart of such stories. She had found interesting developments in ancient cultural tablet engravings, though none had solved her problems with the dream realm. Yet. [break][break]

Her latest phone call with Montgomery might have thrown him for the loop with all her questions about his knowledge of Draconid mythos. Finally, she had revealed that she heard enough about the ruins in Sootopolis that she felt compelled to visit. [break][break]

Unown floated by her side. She figured with its perception abilities, the three of them would be capable of finding out if Draconid rites were really being performed by spirits - and if the rituals had any relevance at all to the dream world.

However, he was not one to believe in such tales.

He did promise to come with her. He had to make sure that the woman who'd managed to strangle his heart with both of her hands was safe in Sootopolis.

"There is a cave somewhere in Sootopolis that belonged to the Draconids." The beach terrain was uncomfortable to traverse, still littered with trash from the events of the battle. There were several skrelp in the sands that looked particularly sickly, but she chose a route that avoided close contact with them. Who knew if they were infected with something or perhaps subject to the toxic chain phenomenon? [break][break]

They came across the mouth of a cave. Whether it was the one she needed or not, she couldn't say. [break][break]

"The Draconid people praised Rayquaza. Their connection to dragons is unmatched. They also, allegedly, held one of the first mega stones." It seemed unlikely that they knew its importance until they used it and transformed Rayquaza. "The way Rayquaza descended upon the world is not unlike that of The Darkest Day, in Galar." She didn't elaborate. It was a blemish in her country's lifespan.

What she said was draconid, but the Unovan man was far from eloquent. She knew that already, and she still somehow stuck to his side, even as a prim and proper galarian.

"So, we just gotta find this cave 'n see if it's haunted, yeah? Piece o' cake." Montgomery was sorely underestimating what could be ahead.

"There's an openin' just ahead. Let's check it out."

His hand reached for hers, pulling her forward.

Her eyebrows shoot up as he takes her hand. What if they were seen? [break][break]

Still, she loves a discovery and there's some natural giddiness that comes from the feeling of sneaking around... She doesn't correct him for the touch, and stays close to his side as they enter the cave. [break][break]

It looks normal. She turns her Rotom phone's light on and sets it to record video as they walk through. There's weird, runic writing on the wall. "I wish I could read their language. I wonder what they wrote about."

TIPPING THE SCALES

AMEENA X MONTGOMERY

WITHIN THIS CAVE, history of Draconids rests quietly. Their old language, like the Celestica script Yuina Higashi hungrily studies, stare at them from the walls, incomprehensible yet beckoning.

However, the language of karma is a universal one. One that transcends life and death. As ameena abadi turns on the light of her Rotom phone, she catches a grisly sight past the wall corner.

A pale man stands before them with a single, precise hole bored right between his eyes. Blood streams down from his forehead, travels down his jawline and neck to pour over the collar of his shirt with a Casteliacone logo. Beneath the arched text, a printed Vanillite smiles as the blood overtakes the white of its face.

"YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE DONE."

The man says, jaw drooping to an impossible depth.

Before Montgomery James can react, the apparition disappears.

The light from Ameena's rotom phone caught a man standing still in front of them. Scarlet blood drained from the bullet wound on his forehead, smearing down his features.

Even the cheerful vanillite cones drowned in blood.

"You know what you've done."

Montgomery dropped his flashlight as if it scalded his hand, adrenaline shooting through his veins. His face grew as pale as the dead man's face, hands clammy with sweat. In a matter of moments, he hunched over, nausea threatening to empty the contents of his stomach.

"Turn it off!" he shouted, having fallen to his knees while his nails dug into the ground. He shivered.

"Ameena, turn of the damn light!"

Her spine straightens at the sight of the pale man, but she immediately clocks the wound. Then, that it must be lethal. "Ah," she exhales, a smile befalling her like a purrloin that's gotten the alcremie, "a ghost."[break][break]

He says something ominous. She thinks nothing of it until she sees how affected Montgomery is. She wants to learn more of the ghost story, but the scientist in her yields to the woman that she is, and she turns off the Rotom phone light immediately and drops it to the ground, coming to his side and wrapping her arms over his shoulders. "What is it?"[break][break]

She looks up, but she doesn't see the man. She squeezes his shoulders to offer comfort. "It's just an apparition."

When Montgomery looked up from his huddled position, the man was gone. The air no longer lingered with the smell of metal, and the blood dripping onto the ground seemed to have vanished.

Shock contorted his features, like he'd be shot in the forehead himself. He barely felt Ameena's arms around his shoulders. He didn't know that man, but he knew him. That bullet hole had been placed there intentionally.

He caught his breath, anxiety slowly shifting to guilt. He found himself nuzzling into Ameena's arms like a child yearning for its mother's warmth.

"It's... it's nothing." He lied.

He's not there with her. [break][break]

It's clear that his mind is elsewhere. His body is taut with animal panic but his eyes are distant. She knows the thousand yard stare. "Montgomery," she says softly, too softly for the games they normally play. "Where are you, right now?" She can't imagine where he is held hostage right now. Unova? Hoenn had its fair share of horrors. [break][break]

Her Unown comes close, its wide and all-seeing eye taking in his face with a blank expression. She wonders if that ghost was one that visited Montgomery in his dreams.

Still, his mind was far away, reeling from the ghost they'd seen moments ago.

Her voice echoed in his mind, drawing him away from the dark. Somewhere, his flashlight illuminated the wall of the cave, giving shape to her shadow-enshrouded arm.

"I'm... home." Montgomery didn't specify where home was. Unova? Hoenn? Or was it simply in her arms?

"Did you see him?" He finally brought up the apparition. "The bullet hole in his forehead-"

She clings to every modicum of data she can gather from his expression and his tone and his - [break][break]

But he gives her what she needs to know, so the overanalysis is unnecessary. Home reverberates in her mind, but her focus on his well-being right now saves her from reacting so viscerally. Who knew how badly she needed to hear him say that word to her? She wanted to hear it every day, in association to her rather than with these memories. [break][break]

Understanding washes over her as he explains the wound on the ghost. Guilt, she identifies. "Okay." She knew he wanted to wash the blood off of his hands by redeeming himself in Hoenn. Was that ghost an innocent man or someone who truly deserved a bullet? [break][break]

"Are you solid?" They can leave. The draconid mystery means nothing to her compared to him.

There was no further questioning. No interrogation about who he was ("I don't know") and if he was innocent ("Yes, he was"). It was just simple acceptance.

He didn't deserve that. Ameena held a murderer in her arms, and she still found it in herself to care for him.

Montgomery's chest ached.

He was silent for a moment longer until he nodded, slowly pulling away from her touch. Slowly, the coolness of the cave sank back into his body where her warmth had been. He reached for his flashlight, dusting off his clothes. His hat was straightened.

"Let's go further." He deliberately ignored her question, opting to investigate further.

The mystery wasn't worth whatever had come over him. Still, she felt pointing out as much might make him feel defensive. He had nothing to prove to her, but arguing to stop on the expedition could position him to feel otherwise. She had been trying to see things from his perspective before acting, so as to avoid situations like the overwhelming gift-giving. She approached him with more thought than she engaged anyone else with. [break][break]

"I think we have seen all the ghostly activity that resides in this cave," she offered instead. "The moon was just at its highest point. Perhaps, that is a guiding force for the visuals."
