There was a skip to his step as Eddie crossed the street towards the direction of the Slateport museum, and he whistled brightly even as a gust of chilly air sailed past him. He had some exciting news to share, after all, and was even more excited to celebrate with a friend. [break][break]

Yuina was the first person that came to mind to break the news to first – after all, one of the last times they had spoken had been a dour recollection of recent tragedy, and then there was that rather distressing RKS experience that genuinely seemed to haunt her. Showing up with some good news, for once, would make for a lovely change of pace. [break][break]

He slipped into the lobby of the museum and shot a text to the young woman announcing his arrival. Eddie grinned wide to himself, hardly able to contain his glee.

Trapped within a constant circle of wanting to be as invisible and inconsequential as humanly possible while also having to be seen and perceived and know that she was being monitored so carefully, it was exhausting. Where Navy told her to keep her head down, she intended to do so as so many more eyes bore down on her back, adding to the weight of everything that she was made to carry. Just because it was laid out to bear, her truth, her lies... Didn't make it any lighter.[break][break]
Yuina had received his initial message, word from Eddie... They hadn't spoken for a while and for now Yuina had preferred it that way... But he had good news to share, something he was very proud of, and Yuina's heart ached. He cared so much for her, and it hurt to know how much he did, how much pain she was liable to cause him... She wasn't worth that. The dread grew, her selfishness in telling him of course they could meet, she'd love to be able to share in his news with him. But she really just wished he would stay away, keep his distance... Or wished that she was better at keeping those she cared for at arm's length and beyond.[break][break]
Distant eyes glanced at the quick text message of his arrival, how she'd hoped that there might have been something that could have come up to deter this, or that she had been less selfish over all this time... But she was stuck. If she said no, she didn't want to see him, that would only push him closer... Eddie was stubborn like that.[break][break]
"Eddie, you made it," Yuina offered as she moved towards the lobby where he'd arrived, cursing herself all the while for making yet another awful decision at the risk of someone else.

Eddie beamed with all of the gregarious excitement of a people-pleasing Growlithe. He waved happily as she drew close, [break][break]

“It's been a minute! How've ya been?” he asked with a bright smile. He almost forgot himself and where he was for a moment, until a passing patron nearly shoulder-checked him. Maybe he shouldn't be doing all this yammering in the lobby after all. [break][break]

The soldier looked up and around, then back to the young woman, [break][break]

“Maybe we oughta find somewhere else ta chat, huh? This place got, like, a coffee shop or somethin'?” [break][break]

He looked around again, as if he could conjure such a place by the pure force of his imagination.

He was smiling, glowing with a pride that shone as bright as ever, and as he approached Yuina only wanted to shrink away into the darkness of the shadow that was cast for her in his wake. Her fingers twisted in front of her skirt, but not before she adjusted her glasses from casting her eyes down just a smidge, almost unable to meet his eye.[break][break]
A simple question, how had she been... But there was no simple answer, not one that Yuina could give that wouldn't sour his mood, the good news he wanted to share. This was about him, this was about something he had accomplished, she wanted him to have that. She opened her mouth, but someone nearly bumped into him as they stood in the middle of the lobby area. Wasn't the best place to have a conversation.[break][break]
"It does, uhm, but we can talk in my office if that's alright," she wondered, one of the only places left where she had some solace. She'd spent... quite some time in her office nowadays, especially when she didn't want to return to an empty home for a time... It was somewhere people always knew she would be, but she didn't have to bear herself to the outside world in a way.[break][break]
"I'm working on a couple of things, and we could get you a coffee if you still wanted one though," she offered, turning as her hair fell down her back, tied by a sunflower yellow ribbon.

“You got yer own private office?” Eddie beamed, completely unaware of Yuina's own misgivings, [break][break]

“Look at you, miss Fancy-Pants! Yeah, lets head that way!” [break][break]

And celebratory coffee could come later, probably. [break][break]

He would follow her and her bright yellow hair ribbon dutifully to their destination, eyes wide and curious as they passed through the museum on their way. It reminded him a little of the art museum in Lilycove, but the natural world, in all its tangible realness, was so much more appealing than the abstraction of artistry. His attention shifted to her office once they would arrive there, and it was only then that it dawned on him that he might be imposing in some way, [break][break]

“I, uh, ain't interruptin' anythin' important, am I?”

Turned away from him, to begin walking the familiar halls and corridors of the museum, it was easy for Yuina's eyes cast down to blink away at the distant haze that held its place most days.[break]
"Hmm? Well, it came with the move over here, Dr. Graves was too generous really to provide the facilities I have here," she returned, taking Eddie carefully through the halls and her own exhibit, the history, culture, and ecology of the Hisui Region. Somewhere she wished so desperately to return to, to disappear to, always wondering what it would have been like to have never left if that was her one cosmic mistake.[break][break]
She came to her office door, large, old heavy wood creaking as she started to push it open, giving Eddie room to step inside.[break]
"History is ongoing, always, it's kind of hard to interrupt something that never stops," Yuina offered, though part of what she was working on was some early evaluations of a mysterious artifact that had been brought to her attention, and she was first in line forced forward due to her 'unique experience' in the area.[break][break]
"But I would always want to give time to you Eddie," what little time she might have left... Was it possible for something to be both a truth and a lie at the same time?

Yuina was a smart kid – brighter than Eddie could ever hope to be, so it was no surprise that a guy like GIDEON GRAVES would take a shine to her. The soldier grinned proudly as the heavy old door creaked open, [break][break]

“Huh, I hadn't thought about it that way.” [break][break]

They were all history in the making, weren't they? Romantic and real, all at once. He felt a new bit of fondness as he stepped inside, [break][break]

“I appreciate it, Yuina. I really do.” [break][break]

He looked around eagerly as he took a few steps inside. Should he build the suspense a little, or should he break the news right away? Eddie considered this for a moment, until he turned around and clapped his hands together, [break][break]

“But! I ain't gonna eat up too much of it, so lemme cut right ta the chase!” [break][break]

This was it, the moment he had been waiting for. He unclasped his hands and jabbed two thumbs to point back at himself, [break][break]

“Guess who's got two thumbs and an invite ta join AQUA?” [break][break]

He beamed toothily, grinning with boisterous self-satisfaction, [break][break]

“This guy, that's who!” [break][break]

Eddie waited a beat, largely convinced that his friend would share the same ecstatic jubilation he had felt since he had accepted the invitation and contract.

Stepping through the worn wooden door, into one of the last places of solace she had, hidden but not too much so as to raise any more eyes to her, Yuina closed the door behind them once Eddie stepped through too. The walls were taken up by various peg boards that she was using, pages upon pages of photo copied books, translations, pieces of her own writing in common word and foreign script. Her desk too, with more than a couple of open books laid out across the surface, Yuina made her way to one book in particular as Eddie beamed and began to speak.[break][break]
She almost smiled to herself, truly Eddie's enthusiasm was contagious, and for a brief moment she was forgetting herself... But she blinked, turned away from him, her hand falling still on the book she had started to reach for on her desk.[break][break]
"...Did you," she questioned quietly, turning towards him, an invitation didn't mean confirmation but... did he...?[break]
"Did you join?"

Yuina's tone was quiet and cautious, a far cry from the jubilant delight Eddie had expected. His smile faltered, and he sheepishly glanced away, down to the book her hand was resting on, [break][break]

“I, uh – ” [break][break]

He suddenly felt like a child on their way to the principal's office, about to be subjected to some sort of terrible scrutiny. But Yuina wouldn't pass that kind of judgment on him, would she? Eddie looked back up at her and mustered up something more resolute when he replied, [break][break]

“I did, actually.” [break][break]

A beat passed, and Eddie resisted the urge to look away again, to the peg boards lining the walls or to any of the surrounding tomes and their wisdom that was so far beyond him, [break][break]

“Should I not have?”

The moment dragged on relentlessly, the silence was stifling... Yuina could hear the sands of that proverbial hourglass, feel the seconds ticking by... And then he finally answered. Her blood ran cold.[break][break]
"Eddie, why?"[break]
She was turned to face him now, but wouldn't move towards him, almost couldn't meet his eye.[break][break]
"Why? Why would you join them? Why would you become one of them," she questioned, her tone caught somewhere between hurt, remorse, contempt.[break][break]
"You were supposed to be better than them, not fall in line... You promised..."

Disappointment would have been a better reaction than this. Yuina sounded like she damn-near hated him, and that hurt, hurt like a bullet ripping straight through his chest. Eddie felt a flash of anger at that, a pang of betrayal, and he snapped like the wounded animal he felt himself to be, [break][break]

“The hell you mean, one of them? You mean the folks that are tryin' ta keep this region safe?” [break][break]

Heat rose to his face and bled into his voice. He grimaced at the feeling and huffed with agitation, [break][break]

“Look, Yuina, I – I know I promised ya, and I'm stickin' to that,” Eddie insisted emphatically, [break][break]

“But, what, do ya think I'm gonna turn inta, inta some kinda war-mongerin' boot-licker just 'cause I joined up with 'em? ”

For all of the interactions they had faced, Eddie had been terse with her before, frustrated perhaps, but never... this... and there was a moment that Yuina faltered as he snapped at her. But her own misgivings, perhaps even her own shortcomings, were still fuel to what Eddie had done.[break][break]
"Are they keeping the region safe when they'll all match blood for blood? Even Melody now, I watched her almost kill a rocket Eddie, when she was one of the only ones before that tried to fight against the violence in that prison," Yuina returned, knowing, she had witnessed it firsthand. Melody had changed under the pretense of power, now that she was an avatar. Matching blood for blood was never going to tip the scale in anyone's favor, it was only ever going to make both sides lighter.[break][break]
"That organization is nothing but control. All they care about is watching you and keeping you under their thumb so that you don't step out of line. And if you do? If they even think for a second that you could incur 'the next primeval', do you think they would hesitate to 'keep the region safe'," she bit back, because she knew, as she had already refused the contract. It was both that she worried for Eddie changing as she had witnessed others do the same, and that she worried how closely they could watch any one of the league aligned legendary Pokemon in trying to prevent any future calamities.

Blood for fucking blood. Yuina may have watched Hoenn's champ try to kill a man, but had she seen the piled bodies in Petalburg? Had she seen the way Rocket had run roughshod over that goddamn town in their ceaseless conquest? Were they even living in the same fucking region? Yeah, sure, there were bigger fish to fry, like the DRK Triad or the Megalopolans or even Eternatus, but who would stand up to them if Rocket was allowed to slaughter members of the League indiscriminately? [break][break]

“Yeah, well, can you fuckin' blame her when Rocket's tryin' ta kill us? Drive us outta our goddamn homes? Turn Hoenn inta their personal fuckin' hellhole?” [break][break]

Eddie's voice grew to a booming crescendo, filling the empty places in the room, carried by the fury of his righteous indignation. Why didn't his friend understand? Why couldn't she understand? [break][break]

“And ya know what?” he continued, almost accusingly, [break][break]

Everyone thought they were right, but somebody had to be wrong, and it seemed that there was no giving. Eddie touted the same speech, the same ire that Melody had. That this is war, this is the job, that there was no other choice.[break]
"That's just it Eddie! That's the only argument, isn't it? That whatever they do, the league can do it too, but because the league is 'the good side' it doesn't matter? That the league can wreck a city like Sootopolis and Mossdeep, and they can ruin ecosystems like the Chasm and invade places like Ultra Space, and experiment with whatever they feel like like Infinity Energy, and it's alright because rocket did it too? It's alright because they're 'the good guys'? The entire region is scared of both sides because they're doing the exact same things," she returned, and if killing was on the table too, just because rocket was, she failed to see how either side was different from the other. Where does it stop? How could anyone trust that the league fueled by their vengeance, the need for prices to be paid in blood and taking what they were rightfully owed wouldn't turn into something worse?[break][break]

"I care about you so much that it aches. And it kills me inside everyday knowing that you deserve so much more than being a soldier lined up to serve a cause that others have forced," she was pained in white hot tears that pricked in the corners of her eyes. He deserved so much more than any of this, and he deserved so much more than her faith fabricated in the lies of who he thought she was.[break][break]
But there was a beat, a pause as her eyes glossed, looking at him. Really looking at him.[break][break]
"If they told you to kill someone, would you do it?"
