Tempest does not struggle when Cillian Quinn pulls his fingers free from knotting into his hair further. He only leans limply into his lover's embrace. The eerie stillness that had taken over him snaps, Tempest trembling like a leaf in the wind. Arms around around the middle of the other, to pull him close. This was a proper goodbye, not like what had happened at the Borders. This was something that Tempest could die knowing he-[break][break]

Furious.[break][break]

All at once, Yveltal vanishes into ghostly shadow. She sinks into the ground quickly, large body turning to nothing in a blink. Lugia may feel where she presses sink down into the murk before it evaporates. But Yveltal is not gone for long, clawing out of the ether opposite of where Lugia sat, next to Tempest and Cillian. Having righted herself, she hops forward like a bird as she unfurls her wings.[break][break]

One rests on the ground like a palm to keep her balance. With uncanny dexterity, one of the long black claws on her other wing pries the two lovers apart. Cillian may be surprised that it does not even slice, though he would be able to tell just how sharp it was from the proximity. It hooks under Tempest's chin, forcing his head up and to the side. Forcing gold to look into blue.[break][break]

Yveltal leans forward, so close that the scent of rot and decay can be smelled just under the petrichor of the rain.[break][break]

you renounced me and pleaded for life, did you not?

The voice is sharper than before, a knife's edge.[break][break]

you will live. this choice is no longer yours.

The claw slides off of Tempest's cheek. It leaves no mark behind. Blue eyes flick up to meet red, Yveltal narrowing her gaze as she meets Lugia's. She speaks to Lugia again, but this time with the channel shut to both the Sanguivore and the Harbinger. 'do not question my choice' She seems to say. 'and i will not question yours.'[break][break]

As close to a truce as will be called this day.

Cillian's nose wrinkles from the sudden stench of rot when Yveltal appears next to them. It is not so powerful nor unpleasant as decomposition, more akin to rotting vegetation than corpse-stink, but it's enough that he leans back slightly when Yveltal's wing cuts between him and his husband.[break][break]

The choice is robbed from Temp, and Cillian struggles to feel disappointed.[break][break]

He does not want to say goodbye. Even a proper goodbye, holding his husband's hand as this accursed life faded, would hurt. Already, the wounds of the past week have been torn open and bleed anew.[break][break]

But when Temp had a choice, Cillian would not be the one to rob him of it. Yveltal takes the burden from his soul, and now only Lugia stands in opposition of this choice.[break][break]

Something passes between the two legends that even Cillian, trusted Avatar of Lugia for years, is not allowed to hear. He can only feel the righteous fury with which Lugia regards Temp fade to a dull disdain. She had respected Cillian's husband, before this creature had left its stains upon him. He had often dove with her when Cillian could not, helped scrub her skin of barnacles, offered her fresh fish from grocery runs. He was not her chosen, but his presence had not been unwelcome.[break][break]

But this is no longer Tempest Quinn alone. This is the Sanguivore.[break][break]

A deal is brokered. Yveltal will accept the Lord of Shadows and his corrupted brood's continued existence upon this earth if Tempest, too, is allowed to remain unscathed.[break][break]

The storm dies down, heavy rains subsiding to a soft drizzle that tickles the skin. Already, the storm has washed away the blood between their embrace. Cillian buries his nose in Temp's neck and sniffles.[break][break]

He pled for his life. The knowledge settles in Cillian's chest. In his final moments, Tempest Quinn had chosen to live.

The claw slides from his face, a choice made, and Tempest takes a sharp breath inwards. The storm settles around them in some finality. Tempest starts to hyperventilate. A hand yanks at his hair again as the other presses against his teeth.[break][break]

"No, no, no, no-"[break][break]

He tries to find the lie of it. His mind rushes to argue.[break][break]

It comes flooding back.[break][break]

I don't want to die.[break][break]

Jerky, stuttered, but breathing slows. Tempest stops pulling his own hair. While still dreamy and distant, golden eyes finally focus enough to meet Cillian's.[break][break]

"I did."[break][break]

It spills from his lips like even he can hardly believe it.[break][break]

When faced with the chance to die, Tempest had chosen to live.[break][break]

And more unbelievable... this choice had courted Death enough to allow it.

Rain disguises the tears that still slide down his cheeks, but the redness in Cillian's eyes of gold-streaked violet betrays the continuation of his grief. So, too, does the way he sniffles before he speaks.

"I know."

It's soft, enough that it would be inaudible to the legends and almost to Temp, were it not for the storm's end.
[break][break]

Cillian knew Temp didn't want to die, because he'd heard that last, desperate plea for himself. Had listened to it over and over again, could still hear the gurgle of blood in his husband's lungs as he had succumbed, Cillian thought, to that one last breath. Only now did he know the truth. In death, he had bargained for another chance at life. And she had granted it.

He doesn't tell Temp how he knows, only repeats softly, "I know."
[break][break]

He cups his hands gently around Temp's jaw, runs his his thumbs over his husband's cheeks and stares into eyes of unfamiliar but hauntingly beautiful gold.

"It'll be OK," he insists, willing himself to believe it.
[break][break]

To ignore the marks of corruption around Temp's neck that no amount of rain could cleanse. The horrible reality that the life Yveltal had granted, Cillian had tried to take.

It feels nice to be touched gently.[break][break]

Tempest leans into Cillian Quinn's palms, allowing the other to search his skin with reverence. The rain washes away all. It is a balm that soaks him to his core, cleaning and powerful as grime and grit and blood wash from skin and soak from clothes.[break][break]

Tempest breaths and feels the air expand his chest. The rushing of life in his once-cold (still cold) body.[break][break]

They would need to talk about this. Clue each other in to the missing pieces of time lost. To alert people that the mission hadn't failed.[break][break]

But that was for later. For now, Tempest would just allow his body to take one more breath.
