The door creaks open.[break][break]

Weight heavy upon the door, weak legs stagger forward to avoid falling through the threshold of his home. Against all odds, Tempest takes a wobbly step forward. The door whispers closed behind him.[break][break]

Rain water runs from his clothes to form a puddle on the ground. Was Lugia upset? Hadn't she...? But Tempest can't keep the thought in his head. A throbbing ache has settled behind his eyelids, a deep exhaustion. It's like he hasn't eaten in weeks. It reminds him vaguely of when his insides had been ripped out and he was still recovering. As weak as water.[break][break]

Where was Cillian Quinn? Shouldn't he be up?[break][break]

It's pitch dark inside, only the occasional illumination from one of Lugia's lightning strikes flashing a brief respite. The light-switch only clicks uselessly under finger, the power most likely knocked out by the storm.[break][break]

Another flash. The living room is oddly cluttered with papers, clothes, and debris. Take out boxes mostly full on the coffee table, clutter on the chairs. It strikes another off, confused note in the back of Temp's mind. He feels like he should be alarmed. The terrible fight to keep his thoughts steady is all that keeps that at bay.[break][break]

"Cil?" He calls out, once, before chancing to take a few steps forward.

Thunder rumbles. Rain drums against the window.[break][break]

A flash of lightning illuminates a dark bedroom. Blankets have been kicked to the floor, suggesting a restless sleep for the figure who stirs at the sound of a voice.[break][break]

PRESSURE hangs thick in the air.[break][break]

Cillian’s eyes burn. His vision blurs. The last thing he remembers from what must have been a dream is the soft sound of his husband’s voice. His chest aches.[break][break]

Temp. Tears slid hot down his cheeks.[break][break]

Another flash draws his attention to the window. He blocks her from his tired mind as best he can, yet still the Harbinger can feel his patron’s fury.[break][break]

What’s she so pissed about? he wonders bitterly. She’s the one who-[break][break]

He can’t finish the thought. It tightens in his chest, in his throat, and he can feel the grief threatening to overwhelm him anew. Fingers turn to claws, shadow warping in the sickly light of the thunderstorm. It was easier to focus on the anger.[break][break]

His mouth is dry, lips chapped from where stuffed sinuses had forced him to breath through his mouth. He wrinkles his nose, licks at his sore lips, and decides to get a glass of water.[break][break]

He takes a few steps toward the half-open bedroom door and freezes.[break][break]

There is an intruder in his house.
[break][break]
No light but for the shine of familiar, electric blue-
[break][break]
Yveltal.
[break][break]
Lugia’s hatred burns through his bloodstream at the thought of the beast. The Harbinger bares jagged teeth, many eyes narrowing toward the threat.[break][break]

A flash of lightning illuminates-[break][break]

No.[break][break]

For a moment, there is grief. Pain so great that it almost cripples him, deep in his chest. The specter of the man he’d married with the eyes of the beast that had killed him.[break][break]

Then the anger takes control, and Cillian lunges.

When Cillian Quinn comes into the room, Tempest stands like a zombie in the middle of the room. Even in the quick flashes of light, the darkness obscures the deep bags laying under electric blue eyes. They glow when the light fades, two beacons in the dark that rise sluggishly to stare at Cillian.[break][break]

Confusion when, suddenly, his husband is cloaked in hard shadows. The confusion almost wins out, but there is something thrumming at the back of his head. It feels like whispers and righteous fury yet is distinctly not his own. It is a connection still new and fresh in a way that evades him.[break][break]

"Cil?" It's slurred on heavy tongue. Movements and mind are too slow to stop Cillian. A choked noise leaves him as the blond grapples him; he can only weakly grasp at Cillian's cold wrists when he is painfully shoved into a wall. A few stars dance in his vision when he flutters them closed at the impact.[break][break]

"What're you doin'?" Is rasped out, confusion and hurt bleeding into his tone. Temp paws at the hand gripping his throat feebly, unable to even wedge fingers under them to try and escape.[break][break]

And little does Temp know. He drains.

At first, Cillian does not notice the drain upon his energy. He is already tired. So, so tired. No matter how much he sleeps - and it is more in this past week than in a lifetime, he feels - there is no relief, no end to the bone-deep exhaustion of grief.[break][break]

So there is no alarm. Only fury.[break][break]

”Monster,” he accuses, claws pressing at the sides of Temp’s throat. ”Let him go. I’m not here for your sick fucking games.”[break][break]

This must be why the Guardian is so furious. Vaguely, he can register the sounds of a fight beyond windows that rattle against HURRICANE winds.[break][break]

Cillian’s grip is strong, but he trembles beneath a tide of mingled anger and sorrow. How much it hurts to see the body of his beloved puppeted like this, staggering around like a ghoul in a space they’d once shared.[break][break]

Claws draw beads of blood, but Cillian doesn’t notice.

A weak gasp leaves him as Cillian Quinn's grip tightens.[break][break]

It is not the same wet, final gasp of a dying body. Pain pricks from his neck, the heat of blood dripping over chilly black claws. The sting is not as great as the one of betrayal in his chest.[break][break]

Tempest had come here seeking the comfort of his husband. Someone he could trust to help ward off the confusion he was feeling, to fill in the missing gaps of his memory from the last few hours. Instead, he is close to being choked out in his own living room and called a monster.[break][break]

Had he somehow entered another universe? How would he have done that? What had happened? Why was the last thing he could remember-?[break][break]

A sharp flash of hatred white hot hatred stabs through the connection in his mind.[break][break]

What was that? Why was...?[break][break]

A slow creep of his body feeling less and less heavy.[break][break]

"Cillian, what are you doing?" Is asked again, rough. The hands gripping Cillian's wrist are less clumsy, the voice not as slurred. Tempest blinks as he tries to remember. "Why?"

The phantom’s grip on Cillian’s wrists tightens, and Cillian’s own becomes weak. He feels dizzy, suddenly, and it’s not just from dehydration or oversleeping.[break][break]

He feels drained. This monster was killing him.[break][break]

No. It had taken his husband. Cillian wanted nothing more than to be with his husband again, but not like this. He would not allow Yveltal the satisfaction.[break][break]

With a surge of his fading strength, the Harbinger’s claws sink deep. Hot blood pours over frigid fingers, but the haze of fury and mounting weakness disguises the proof of the beating heart that pumps blood through veins that empty from a torn throat.

Tears pour down his cheeks, spattering blood-streaked arms.[break][break]

”Let him go.”

A choked, wet gasp. A twisted reflection of what happened back in the Borders, only up close. Flecks of blood splatter across Cillian Quinn's face in a beautiful Pollock that the lord of shadows could not see.[break][break]

There is a squelch, then a crack. The fingers on Cillian's wrist slacken, dropping to hang at Tempest's sides. Blood splatters in large drops on the floor.[break][break]

The grip weakens, making the heavy body of Tempest slump forward. His head lolls onto Cillian's shoulder, the only thing keeping his flagging body upright. For the second time in recent memory, Tempest starts to die.[break][break]

Lighting flashes wildly. In the reflection of the curio cabinet, Tempest finally sees his own warped blue eyes. The glow flickers in the glass of the tacky glass unicorns even after the light fades.[break][break]

And suddenly Tempest understands.[break][break]

With a shaky breath, he gags on his own blood. Using the last of the life left in him, cold fingers wrap around his lover's body to give a weak hug.[break][break]

"Cil..." Is whispered, pained. Understanding, which was the most cruel thing of them all. "I love... love you."[break][break]

Then Tempest stops breathing.

Blood sprays against his cheeks.[break][break]

That wasn’t right. Through the haze, Cillian struggles to connect dots the anger had blinded him to before.[break][break]

Dead men don’t bleed.[break][break]

A raw wound gapes in his lover’s throat, and Temp’s last words are choked through his own blood. Not a whisper of betrayal, as they should have been, but a last declaration of love.[break][break]

To his murderer, whose grip weakens as his own life force is drained away.[break][break]

Cillian staggers as he tries to back away, to disentangle himself from the body that slumps against him. His limbs feel stiff as the grave. He can’t move.[break][break]

The windows shatter with Lugia’s shriek of rage, a STORM OF SHADOWS slamming against the battered building. Rain streams through broken glass, curtains flapping.[break][break]

And Tempest Quinn dies in his husband’s arms.

Tempest dies in his husband's arms.[break][break]

The corpse is still and quickly growing colder in Cillian Quinn's grip. The rain and wind from the battle outside pelts against what was left of Tempest. The last of his lifeblood spills out in thick drips on Cillian's skin, soak into the blond's clothes. Electric blue eyes only half close, the light fading from them.[break][break]

For a few moments all is still. Perhaps just long enough for the weight of what Cillian has done to really sink in. For the load of the dead body upon him to feel extra heavy with the burden of guilt as it presses upon him.[break][break]

At least now he would have something to bury.[break][break]

Then there is a sudden, long, deep, breath as Tempest's body jerks.[break][break]

Hands that gave a final caress now grasp blindly at Cillian, eyes snapping back into focus as the corpse rises like a snake. It fumbles again, a beast, sharp fangs glinting in the low light. There is nothing behind the glow now, seeming brighter than before.[break][break]

Only the instinct of an animal and the fury of his patron.

His hands are so often soaked in blood.[break][break]

This was no new experience for Rocket’s Harbinger. It is not the first life he’s taken. But it will, perhaps, be the one with a lasting impact on his soul.[break][break]

The blood is warm as it drains from a cooling corpse.[break][break]

Cillian wants to shove the body off of him, to stagger back and breathe and collect himself. His mind is racing and the trauma hasn’t yet caught up to him, shock keeping him in stasis.. When the corpse jerks, a rattling gasp tearing up through its throat, Cillian knows he was right.[break][break]

This was not his husband. This was Yveltal’s puppet.[break][break]

Only this time, Cillian isn’t as strong as when he’d torn out its throat. Infinity energy drains from him in steady waves. Lugia’s proximity keeps him breathing, keeps him swathed in shadow, but she is no Xerneas with an infinite supply. Eventually, he will run out.[break][break]

”G-Get back.” His tongue is thick in his mouth, speech slurred as though he was having trouble using it. Tears flow against rigid cheeks.[break][break]

Lugia, help me.[break][break]

But there is only the static of a severed connection in his mind.

The beast that was Tempest does not get back.[break][break]

It only lunges, urgent, to sink those fangs into Cillian Quinn's throat.[break][break]

They pierce with brutality. Tempest sinks down on top of the other as he feeds off the life-force of his husband, trying to keep the blond pinned with his body. Lightning flashes once more. The rough-hewn wound that bled him dry knits together with supernatural pace.[break][break]

A low noise like a unfinished growl leaves his healing throat.

There is little resistance as Temp goes for his throat.[break][break]

It is not that he wants to surrender. But when Cillian tries to fight the Beast back, it is as if he moves in slow motion. His actions of self-defense are delayed by the petrification that seeps through his bloodstream and down into his bones.[break][break]

He shoves weakly against the monster’s chest, but can’t stop the fangs that sink into his throat. It is not the playful biting of intimacy, but the primal savagery of a starving animal.[break][break]

As his own throat weeps blood, he watches Not-Temp's flesh knit together with the purple stitching of Lugia’s corruption. The Harbinger’s mark upon the skin of a Sanguivore.[break][break]

Cillian’s eyes glaze, their deep violet depths streaking with gold as his powers begin to fade. Like a sponge beneath desert heat, his reserves dry out. Shadows become skin, but his flesh retains the cold clamminess of a dying man. Strong winds tear through the apartment and disperse the last of the SHADOW MIASMA.[break][break]

The Harbinger was a monster, but Cillian is only a man.[break][break]

And men can die.[break][break]

He closes his eyes and feels the warmth of Temp’s lips against his neck, the brush of long hair against his skin, and he can almost pretend this kiss of death is a loving embrace.[break][break]

At least his last memories will be of home.

It is not the blood that the Sanguivore feeds on despite the title. Even as the tang of sweet life is lapped at with hungry tongue, the life of Cillian Quinn is what this beast craves. An angel of death here to drain the blond until he was little more than an empty husk.[break][break]

Perhaps Tempest would have went through with it, in the mind frame he is in.[break][break]

It is like sweet ambrosia flowing into him. He is a man who has always been starving finally allowed to feast. The ichor of the other's life revitalizes and clears his mind. It is a bottomless draught that he never wishes to empty. Yet, he can still sense that the meal is coming to an end.[break][break]

Then Cillian slumps in his arms, as if accepting his fate.[break][break]

All at once, Tempest snaps back into his own mind.[break][break]

He jerks away in horror at what he had almost done, looking at the sprawled form of his lover under him. The bloody ring of teeth oozes, the edges stained black. Cillian is still, unnaturally so.[break][break]

Tempest's breathing picks up, panic now what makes his heart rate pick up.[break][break]

"Cillian?"[break][break]

Tempest all at once jumps away from the other as if burned, as if his very presence would harm Cillian further. A hand reaches out to touch his husband's cheek, then flinches and aborts halfway.[break][break]

Silence. The storm rages outside with howling winds. A flask of red lighting brightens the room in odd shapes.

The world goes black.[break][break]

Cillian is not dead, though the breaths with which his chest rises and falls are so shallow that he might easily be mistaken for a corpse.[break][break]

Outside, the storm doubles in strength as the Harbinger’s siphon on his Guardian’s power comes to an end. A great, rumbling crash echoes overhead. Cillian hears it as though from a great distance, as though he is not present in his body but somewhere else.[break][break]

He stirs as the petrification begins to ebb, a soft moan trapped in his throat.[break][break]

Cillian wakes with the phantom ripples of Lugia’s fear and fury tight in his chest. His head is pounding and his throat hurts. When he presses fingers to his neck, they come away soaked in his own blood. He spots the phantom looming over him.[break][break]

Only instead of Yveltal’s electric blue, its eyes are brilliant, shining gold.[break][break]

I must be dying. The fear he’s always expected to feel in the moments before death is strangely absent, replaced by a calm acceptance. Death would be all right.[break][break]

It just means he’ll get to be with-[break][break]

”Temp?” he tries to ask, but what comes out is a wet gurgle.
