Lavaridge Town was certainly a rather interesting destination. She had, honestly, never seen so many elderly in one place. It looked like stories of this being a great place to relax wasn't overstated. It seemed everyone around here was either rather relaxed or just about to be. Ruby couldn't help but be curious about the hot springs, despite coming here for a gym battle. Perhaps after the battle she could convince herself to be able to spend the time! However, right now, she had a gym leader to find.

The gym itself was absolutely beautiful. Stunningly gorgeous trees, flames burning on wooden pillars, the whole place had an aesthetic that Ruby certainly enjoyed. Grinning with glee, she pushed in through the front door. "Er, hello?" Ruby called out with a hint of nerves in her voice. She already had a plan for winning, but it was something she hadn't been able to test at all in the slightest. Regardless, she trusted her pokemon to see her through till the end.

"I'm uh, here for a gym badge! If that's okay!" Ruby was once again stunned. There were people in the sauna, in the gym? An audience for her battle? Almost immediately she couldn't help but grin a little bit wider, feeling like it was just a tad bit closer to the extremely televised gym battles at home, she was confident that she'd at the very least, surprise everyone with how competent she was.

"That's it, Steelix! Perfect! Now, just set that down gently, and we can get to the next bit. Sound good?"[break][break]

Stormy's voice carries across the yard as she watches her immense Pokemon use his strength to lower a new shower system near the main building. His teeth leave minor dents in the casing but it's his immense restraint that Stormy is proud of the most.[break][break]

She's been working with him diligently to temper his rage, his overzealous confidence, and strength. After his.. incident in the desert, she had vowed to never let that happen again. So far, she had seen great improvement and restraint. He was turning into a very reliable Pokemon.[break][break]

With a gentle thud, the shower is set down and Steelix pulls away, his immense serpentine body coiling as he himself marvels at his own display of restraint. Stormy is distracted by a soft voice behind her and the woman turns to see a young girl.[break][break]

Visitors to the sauna turn as well to see her, but given the girl's youth and quieter entrance, they don't pay her too much mind.[break][break]

"A gym badge, eh? Well, you've certainly come to the right place. Welcome to the Lavaridge gym!"[break][break]

The gym leader glances over her shoulder at Steelix, who seems intrigued by the youngster and a little restless.[break][break]

"You can follow me, if you like. You showed up just in time, Steelix could use a nice battle to get out his pent up energy."[break][break]

She smiles pleasantly as she gestures for Ruby to follow her out to the wide-open battlefield. Steelix needs more room than this to effectively battle.[break][break]

Ruby was admittedly a bit wowed to see such a massive pokemon. She honestly... didn't know what it was, but it looked like steel and was apparently called Steelix which satisfied her curiosity for now. She stared in awe, watching the Steelix at work. It was so large, so strong, she couldn't help but smile as he so gently moved the shower. However, her eyes were quickly torn away from the Steelix as she was spoken to directly.

"O-oh! Well, alright!" She smiled, quickly moving to catch up to the gym leader and step out with her onto the battlefield itself. Of course, the nerves slowly began to grow as she continued to look at the massive steel-type pokemon. That was bound to be difficult to take down, but she hoped her plan would work out. It wasn't flawless, and it was sure to be an uphill battle, but it was all about the faith you had in your pokemon. Even through difficult situations, they could still overcome. Or at least, that was the hope.

Ruby let out a soft breath, trying to calm her nerves as she slowly moved to take her place across the field and stand tall. Grabbing two of her Pokeballs, she quickly let out Darling the Indeedee and Bubbles the Greninja. Both of the rather respectful pokemon bowed at the gym trainer across from them. Or rather, Darling curtsied, but the point remained the same.

Before anything else could happen, Darling's Psychic Surge ability activates. The battlefield around them slowly takes on a purple look as waves of psychic energy surrounded the battlefield. "Alright, I'm ready!" Ruby called out, waiting for confirmation for the fight to begin.

Stormy catches onto Ruby's amazement, and the woman can't help but feel a flush of pride for her Pokemon. And a little bit of subtle impressiveness at how fearless Ruby seemed in the face of such a huge Pokemon. [break][break]

Steelix moves into position as Stormy retrieves another pokeball. This one containing a Houndoom. The dog lands neatly on all four paws and turns its horned head to face Ruby and the Pokemon she had brought out to play.[break][break]

There's a calm fearlessness in the Houndoom's stare, a determination, a challenge.[break][break]

Ruby announces that she's ready just as her Indeedee plants some sort of weird aura on the battlefield. It impresses Stormy almost immediately, but probably because the woman has no idea what it is. She's never even seen the strange butler Pokemon before in her life - so she's at a loss for what it can do.[break][break]

"Sounds good, kid! Steelix, Houndoom, let's get this show on the road, shall we?"[break][break]

Steelix responds by

screeching

. The sound is like nails on chalkboard but magnified. Stormy covers her ears and Houndoom narrows her eyes, before throwing her own voice into the scream with a

meant to push both Indeedee and Greninja back.[break][break]

Ruby's confidence faltered a little bit as a Houndoom was revealed. Dark-type? That wasn't looking good for Indeedee. The psychic terrain around them wasn't nearly as effective if her opponent wasn't even bothered by her psychic attacks. Regardless, Ruby continued to smile softly as she tried to rework her strategy mentally a bit.

Darling didn't need to attack a whole lot, she was there as a support. The real offensive powerhouse was going to be Bubbles and his powerful water shuriken to carry them through. However, before she could tell her pokemon what to do a terrible screech and roar combo seemed to unsettle both of her pokemon. Darling blinked with wide eyes, staring ahead at the massive Steelix, while Bubbles didn't move but Ruby could tell he was nervous simply from experience having him with her for so long.

"A-all right guys," She spoke, standing as tall as she could. "Let's get set up." Darling shook herself from her fear, letting out a deep breath with the usage of Calm Mind. Clearing her mind and preparing her for battle as the psychic energy began to visibly surround them ever so slightly. Not to be outdone, Bubbles quickly placed their hands together as multiple copies of herself began to form spread out across the battlefield in a circle with the usage of Double Team.

Quickly, Bubbles began to dash around the battlefield. All the other copies as well seemingly swarming in every direction, distracting and making the real Bubbles difficult to determine. Meanwhile, Darling just kept breathing softly, smiling over at her foes with a soft, demure grin. Her form occasionally hidden behind a running image of Bubbles.

Notes: Calm Mind used to clear Darling's mind and prepare for combat, and Bubbles used Double Team to distract her foes and make hitting them difficult!

Stormy's attention snaps immediately to the stutter in Ruby's voice. She seems visibly shocked and unsure about the Houndoom as the hellhound graces the field. The hound herself can smell the young girl's fear immediately, or at least smell her unease. It's potent and she wants to use that to her advantage.[break][break]

The

psychic terrain

poses no threat to her at all - in fact it's likely she can't even see it. The Indeedee seems to glow with some sort of hazy energy, but it's almost like a lock-on target for the hellhound. [break][break]

"Patience."[break][break]

Stormy's command is soft but firm, and the Houndoom's ears prick at the sound. With fangs bared, she emits a low growl of satisfaction. While the Greninja poses a serious threat to douse her fire, she isn't the least bit scared. [break][break]

Not even when the water-type Pokemon doubles up, then triples before his body fills the entire field with mirror images of himself. It's intimidating and Stormy swallows hard, her teeth clench together as she feels that familiar sense of dread.[break][break]

It's the same tactic Isra Nightingale had used against her in a previous fight. Stormy hadn't been able to keep up with the

double team

, hadn't been able to see through the trickery and illusion. She couldn't allow that to happen again.[break][break]

Houndoom's eyes slide back and forth rapidly as she attempts to locate the real version - but Stormy's sharp whistle reminds her of her actual target.[break][break]

"It's time to disappear."[break][break]

Stormy says this sharply, her voice carrying well and across the field. Steelix rumbles, his body seems to groan with effort as his serpentine body shifts. Metal screeches on metal in the process but soon grows silent like a well-oiled machine. In a flash, faster than one might have expected from such an immense Pokemon, the Steelix disappears beneath the earth. It crumbles and cracks, his tail lashes and slams the ground when he finally

digs

deep enough.[break][break]

And then the Houndoom disappears with him, emitting a hyena-like laugh as she performs a

nasty plot.

The moment the two of Stormy's pokemon went underground the choices were clear. They could either stand on the ground and be at a disadvantage, risk going into the tunnels after them and being even worse off with that massive Steelix and the way he simply dug with ease, or the third and infinitely better option, leave the ground entirely. If they removed their opponent's ability to control the playing field, things would definitely be easier for them.

"Bubbles, get out of there! Darling, you know what to do!" The Greninja heard Ruby's command and suddenly they used Bounce. Squatting down and compressing their legs, the frog-like pokemon suddenly jumped extremely high into the air, with all of their double team images flying up with them at the same time. Instead of the ground being full of Greninja, the entire sky was full as they bided their time and waited to strike. Their eyes scanning the ground, watching for any movements.

Darling didn't seem to mind being on the ground. In fact, the kindly Pokemon just began to run around the battlefield, with as much grace as they possibly could, which wasn't much considering the Indeedee wasn't used to such mobile combat. Regardless of their movement, it seemed Darling was preparing herself for combat once more, with a second Calm Mind encouraging clarity of mind and honing her natural psychic prowess as she dashed around. It almost looked a bit like a child, running around with their arms flailing and simply having a bit of a good time. There was certainly some form of intelligence to their childish movements, however, with a subtle smile on their face. They had a goal in mind, that much was certain.

Notes: Bubbles and all her Double Team clones soared upwards into the air with Bounce, avoiding the ground. Darling used Calm Mind again and runs around the battlefield akin to a playful child.

It was both surprising and unsurprising that Ruby had a way to avoid Stormy's next attack. [break][break]

But perhaps Stormy had been counting on it.[break][break]

Because, as soon as the Greninja's many shadows left the ground in his

bounce

, that's when the Steelix struck. He had been waiting, biding his time, processing the situation from underneath and waiting for the weight to be lifted. He was waiting for his target.[break][break]

The Indeedee sprints across the rough and patchy ground, but the Steelix is faster. He's a predator.[break][break]

At the last possible second, the Steelix breaks the surface and surrounds the Indeedee with his body, coiling tight to act as a barricade. [break][break]

Houndoom breaks not long after, shooting up from the ground and spraying debris from her fur. The snarl from her lips is devastating as she homes in on the psychic type.[break][break]

The hellhound lunges without hesitation, teeth bared as she attempts to latch onto the Indeedee's arm with

crunch

.[break][break]

Meanwhile, the Steelix has noticed the

bouncing

Greninja, and seems to rumble with annoyance.[break][break]

Darling knew she was supposed to be the diversion and it was simply only due to her total clarity of mind that allowed the psychic type pokemon to remain calm under the pressure. Or rather, under the jaws of the dark hellhound. She yelped out in reaction to the pain, her arm certainly taking a bit of a beating. Despite that, however, she didn't seem to be doing any more running away. With a soft hum, a golden aura would spring up around her as she would attempt to grip onto the horns of the Houndroom to keep him as still as possible. Using Helping Hand, a similar golden aura surrounded Bubbles, leaving all the clones to take on a golden hue.

Ruby certainly felt bad for leaving Darling to take the brunt of the aggression. She could have brought someone a bit tankier, or perhaps another water type, but when it came to doubles battling there were few Pokemon she trusted more. "Now!" Ruby called out, pointing out over the battlefield. Bubbles suddenly prepared Water Shuriken, them and their Double Team clones all seemingly doing the same thing as they leaped right over the top of the current conflict and suddenly fired a rapid blast of golden-laced shurikens down at their foes.

All the duplicates also did the same, but only one set of Water Shurikens did damage, the rest were simply distractions. Aimed directly for the Houndoom that was hopefully being held by Darling, a rapid set of shurikens would hopefully slam straight into their side assuming all went well. Landing down on the ground finally, Bubbles would be seen posing, quite clearly now trying to be the one to draw the aggression of the Steelix that watched it.

Notes: Indeedee takes the crunch, and remains calm. Using Helping Hand, she hopefully held the Houndoom still as the enhanced Water Shurikens from Bubbles would slam into them. Landing, they would antagonize the Steelix in a hope to draw aggro.

The moment Houndoom's teeth meet flesh, she bites down harder. Refusing to let go, however, appears to be her vice - as the Indeedee's hands reach for her horns to hold her still. Wild and full of rage, the Houndoom struggles against her captor, throwing her body back as hard as she can.[break][break]

It doesn't work in time to protect her from the

helping hand

that guides the

water shurikens

to explode against her skin. THe water slices through flesh, opening small cuts. The water douses her fire if only for a moment, before she violently breaks free of Indeedee's grasp.[break][break]

However, only one stream of shurikens were the right ones, and Steelix had been paying attention. With a

screech

that could burst eardrums, the Steelix swings his body around, hard. The steel casing of his tail seems to harden further as he thrashes his body forward in a wide-arced

iron tail

. [break][break]

In the process, it destroys the distorted clones and narrowly misses Houndoom as she leaps, her claws scratching the surface of her partner's hide as she makes it over the other side - virtually unscathed. Metal screams against the ground as the Steelix finishes its

iron tail

.[break][break]

The moment the Houndoom's paws hit the ground, her claws grip the gravel and she whirls, coming right back around to tackle the Greninja that, hopefully, the Steelix has pinned down. Should he have been successful, the Houndoom will have already performed a

nasty plot

to boost her attack before sinking her fangs in deep with a

thunder fang.

Ruby was worried for Darling, but seeing her calm expression despite the thrashing the Houndoom did in her grip helped reassure her. They had trained for this, they knew what they were doing. She let out a deep breath herself as the Steelix suddenly screeched out once more, swinging its large tail towards Bubbles.

This was precisely what Bubbles had wanted, to draw the aggression of her foes. However, she wasn't counting on the screech that threw her focus off. The IRON TAIL slammed into her side as she went flying from the strong blow. Quickly scrambling back up to her feet, Bubble's eyes narrowed as she examined her situation.

"Bubbles! Vanish! Darling! Help them out!" Ruby suddenly called out as she watched the Houndoom leap over their ally. With Darling standing right where she had been abandoned, her arm was being clutched to their chest to nurse the injury. Despite that, they used HELPING HAND once more as Bubbles glowed with a golden light of energy.

Suddenly, the Greninja vanished into its shadow as soon as the Houndoom leaped towards it. Her shadow quickly spreading out across the field and moving beneath the Steelix to form behind them. "Now! Strike at the big one!" Ruby cried out as loudly as she could. Bubbles reformed incredibly quickly, striking with a ghostly power at the Steelix as her SHADOW SNEAK was amplified with the glowing energy surrounding her. Immediately after striking, they'd leap away across the field away from Darling in an attempt to keep her untouched.

Notes: Bubbles got hit with the Iron Tail, distracted by the Screech. Assisted by Darling's usage of Helping Hand, Bubbles used Shadow Sneak to evade the Thunder Fang, only to attack the Steelix's back. Bubbles is now Ghost Type.

The ground rumbles with the impact as Steelix's tail slams into the ground. For a moment, all is still as the metal Pokemon recovers from the ability. The unbridled rage had worked partially in his favor and out of it as he begins to draw his serpentine body back and away. But when he does, he reveals that the Greninja is waiting for Houndoom.[break][break]

Stormy audibly gasps as the girl's command rings true - the Greninja had disappeared as soon as her

thunder fang

closes around empty air. The impact of her jaws closing together is painful and she takes a moment to recover from the shock, whirling on her paws to watch the shadow extend from her own and into Steelix's.[break][break]

"Watch out!"[break][break]

Stormy's warning comes too late, and the Greninja's

shadow sneak

catches the Steelix off guard. The immense Pokemon slams to the ground, unmoving for a moment. [break][break]

"Houndoom, protect him!"[break][break]

She points to the fallen giant who has begun to recover, slowly but surely. It would likely leave him open to attack but perhaps he was milking it, baiting it. If he drew the attention of his enemies to him, the weak and vulnerable one, it may just work in their favor.[break][break]

Houndoom licks her lips, teeth still thrumming with leftover energy. Her claws extend as she pushes into the dirt, performing a

nasty plot

as she prepares to blast a

flamethrower

at the Greninja.[break][break]

Steelix, meanwhile, would wait for the opportune moment to avoid the scalding flames and dive underground with

Ruby had to keep herself from immediately cheering out as the Steelix slammed to the ground from Bubbles' SHADOW SNEAK. Celebrating preemptively before the fight was over was simply bound to cause her to fail. She had to keep herself calm, just like her Pokemon. Focused and ready for battle. She watched as the Steelix slowly moved back up to its proper position and simply waited. The massive steel snake was almost certainly tanky, so perhaps it wasn't moving slowly because it was hurt badly, perhaps it was just rattled. Unsure of what its plan was, Ruby switched her attention to the Houndoom that was now the primary threat.

As she heard Stormy command her Houndoom to protect the Steelix, Ruby quickly snapped to attention. "Bubbles! Don't let them intimidate you! Get in there and douse those flames!" Bubbles quickly formed a few large WATER SHURIKENS within her hands as they once again began to glow gold. Darling was once again using HELPING HAND to boost the Greninja's strikes.

As the flames hit, Bubbles didn't attempt to dodge the FLAMETHROWER that came her way. Instead, she charged straight through it instead. The flames cooked away at her skin, burning away at her body. Luckily, the quick shift back to water type with her ability PROTEAN helped her resist the flames. It was difficult to push through the pain, especially with all those nasty thoughts metaphorically burning away at her wet skin, but with Darling cheering them on they finally got somewhere close.

Shurikens in hand, Bubbles would quickly attempt to swing them across the Houndooms face, only to leap backward and quickly toss the water blades down at the hellhound in a follow-up strike. They were certainly breathing heavy, eyes narrowed as they glanced across the battlefield.

Ruby bit her lip, worried about just how much Bubbles could truly take. She was smart and resourceful, but even the strongest Pokemon had limits. "You're doing great you two!" Ruby quickly called out, intent to support her pokemon as much as she possibly could.

Notes: Bubbles quickly uses Water Shuriken, Protean changing them to Water-Type. Charging through the flamethrower and taking quite a bit of damage, despite the type resistance, Bubbles swung the shurikens and then tossed them at the Houndoom, aided by Darling's Helping Hand.

It is unexpected, watching the Greninja rush through the flames in order to stop the Houndoom. Stormy swallows her surprise, however, as her Steelix burrows underground and disappears. Houndoom acts as a sacrifice and a distraction, crying out in pain as the

water shurikens

strike her repeatedly in the mouth. It forces her to her knees as she flips over from the impact, tumbling off to the side to recover.[break][break]

Except she doesn't, not quite. Exhaustion grips her and she trembles with the effort to stand back up. Water and saliva drip from her mouth and she appears unsteady and frustrated.[break][break]

Underneath, the earth begins to shake. [break][break]

Houndoom loses her balance as the ground churns, and she stumbles to the side and collapses elsewhere, weakness setting in. [break][break]

Stormy chews the inside of her lip at this, but allows her Houndoom a moment to collect herself. She turns to the hole where Steelix had disappeared through instead, holding a breath to help her concentrate.[break][break]

"Now, Steelix!"[break][break]

With an incredible

screech

that reverberates around the entire arena, bouncing off of everything due to the tunnels dug underneath, it's virtually impossible to tell where the monster will come from. The only tell is the dirt exploding upon impact as he emerges in a blind

rage

, body thrashing wildly as he sweeps the area with his immensity. It sends gravel flying with enough force that Stormy lifts her arm to shield herself.[break][break]

Somehow, miraculously, Houndoom has managed to get out of the way of the Steelix's

rage

for the most part. The dog scrambles, desperate to not be crushed.[break][break]

"Houndoom!"[break][break]

She nods, firmly, and Houndoom pants but seems to understand. In one last stretch of strength, the Pokemon leaps for Steelix's tail, clamping down hard with a

crunch

. It puts the Steelix into an even deeper

rage

, boosting his attack power. Houndoom lets go, rolling to a stop where Stormy would return her before the Pokemon could be lost in the heat of battle.[break][break]
