Valerio remembers his first hakamo-o. His name is Iawa. He got it as an egg from his uncle, a gift he acquired when he was aged seven.
The Dachev Sem’ya receives their first dragon the moment they turned one. Every year, his family from his parents generation up to the last ones that are still living, are required by their customs to give hin dragon eggs as a giff. By the time he was seven, he had the same number of baby dragons as well.
Iawa, then a jangmo-o, was his last dragon egg.
The memory strikes Valerio as he remembers his hakamo-o. His dying screech is a sound of horror he does not want being recalled. The creature reminds him of the death of his family, something that soiled his childhood longingness for care and love. But the jangmo-o struggles the way he struggles with life as well, and Valerio’s turn to adulthood as such a young age is reflected when it evolved as well.
He could only whisper his apologies to the air as he remembered his dying screech. He thought the memories of Johto were far long gone. He thought he could just forget everything. Iawa does not want him to forget.
Darty curiously scrutinizes the face of his owner which is already darkened by the dim-lited cave and his overflowing bangs. If he could understand human emotions, his eyes have welled with sadness that is difficult to understand.
But Darty did, in a way that he knows how his master, despte his harshness to him at first, is someone who truly cares for his partners.
Valerio does not have to say anything. Darty understands. And so from his backpocket he reaches a ball that doubles in size, hurls it at the wondering creature who is just curious about their in-cave campfire, as the rocket smiles with much conviction of the message he receives from above.
Okay, Iawa. I totally get it now.
