an automaton rumbles behind her and she laughs, the sound practically music to her ears. true to her word, she's back in the safari again with her shiny golurk in tow. it is excited, like a toddler in a candy store, and she can't help the swell of affection in her chest.

together, they stroll toward the unknowns the safari holds, her small hand in deus' massive one. and in that moment, all feels right in the world... like nothing else matters but their connection and this fleeting moment in time.

something rustles through the bushes and both pairs of eyes drift toward the source. a floating blob is what they find, curious and almost looking like a cell. the woman stares, head tilting with confusion. there's pokemon that look like that? really?

it's a cute little thing and she doesn't need to even glance at her golurk to know that it, too, finds the creature adorable. she hears the subtle creaking of movement before she sees it and her response is silence. a simple hand raises to catch deus' in time before the golem's giant hand prods too much at the solosis. she's almost afraid that if she allows the golurk to have free reign in its actions that the creature might pop... is it filled with liquid like a water balloon? or is it more like jello? she doesn't want to find out.

instead, she gives a light tug on deus' hand and they're venturing away from the gelatin-like creature, her leading the behemoth as it makes soft noises almost like a sad child. she denied it the curious touch, the questioning pat, and she knows that it is simply just as curious as she. and so, with a soft smile, she holds its hand a little tighter, squeezing at clay and stone in an attempted apology. the next one, her touch promises. the next one you can pet.

hopefully she can keep that promise.

the next pokemon they stumble upon is one she recognizes immediately. a gible, with a large mouth and sharp teeth. it's a cute little dragon despite the rows of chompers held within the gums of a strong jaw. the little arms almost make it less dangerous than it is... and yet, deus is unafraid.

her golurk bounces up to the small creature without hesitation, a large hand already stretching toward the gible as happy rumbles escape its body. a curious creature, her golurk... it's funny, she's almost reminded of herself when she was younger. unafraid of knowledge, seeking it out with wandering hands and curious eyes. perhaps that's why she simply watches the scene unfold instead of intervening. the gible is confused at first, questioning grunts escaping in a series of waves before suddenly it understands and it's quick to jump up and smash its head into the golurk's molded palm.

a smile rises to her lips as this begins a new game of how high can the gible jump? deus continues to raise its hand with each passing squeal of excitement that comes from the small dragon. it's almost as if the golurk is trying to get the dragon to exceed its own limits, to become better than it already is. the sight warms her heart and without a second thought, she's giggling and earning herself the attention of both deus and its new friend. "you're adorable," she murmurs after a moment, drifting closer toward the duo as they stare.

deus lets out a happy rumble and all but drags her over by the hand, completely thrilled to show its trainer what it has managed to accomplish. a new friend, yay! "i see," she chirps with a bright grin. "i'm very proud! are we going to invite the little dear along with us?" this earns a vigorous nod and before she can say another word, deus is bouncing back over to the gible with outstretched arms.

the frantic flapping of wings startles her and her partner as they go, a gasp escaping her lips easy as a sigh. the automaton beside her grunts, as if it doesn't want to show signs of surprise in front of her. fitting, she supposes... it has always been a childlike creature since coming into her life. stubborn and hardheaded with the innocence of the young. her hand tightens slightly around deus', applying pressure in a way that says it's okay to be taken by surprise.

the golem of clay and stone rumbles again and she flashes the ghost of a smile toward its face before her head tilts up toward the sky. a starly flies overhead, chocolate brown and white passing by in a flurry of feathers and wind. it brings her back to a time where the ground was covered in snow up to the knees and she was smaller, both in mind and body. the barely there smile retreats into something more pained and she tries to hurry her pace. bad memories surface in flashes, overwhelming and disorienting. it's like seeing bits and pieces of horror beneath your eyelids and there's too much to analyze, too much she does and doesn't remember.

the golurk picks up on the change in her demeanor and practically sweeps her away, large hands coming to scoop her off the ground. its legs are longer, bigger, faster. and so, she settles against the crook between its neck and shoulder, hands trembling slightly. get her away from that bird, away from that time.

her attention is on the clouds, the trees, the bushes... everywhere but in front of her. she doesn't notice deus beginning to stray at first. no, she's too distracted by the emptiness of her thoughts. there's fleeting whispers of things in her mind and they disappear in the end, retreating to the corners of the space to return later. it's only when she feels the automaton's presence fully leave her that she returns to the here and now.

of course, she probably should have expected the golurk to find a stray pokemon while she had her back turned. it has a habit of doing that, after all, but this early into the safari might just be a new record. sure enough, the golem returns with a happy sound escaping it. in its arms rests a charming little puppy. a rockruff, to be exact, but she's more focused on how content it looks in the behemoth's grasp. right at home, even. her heart flutters a little at the sight and before she can stop herself, she's shuffling closer with a coo.

"found yourself a friend, huh?" it's affectionate and deus offers its own gruff version of a coo right back. she doesn't have the heart to tell the golurk to put the puppy down. instead, she offers a small smile and a bob of her head. "well, if you'd like to come with us," she murmurs, gaze drifting toward the rockruff as it begins to happily lick at deus' arm. "you're more than welcome to, little one."

and then, she reaches a hand out to pet the rockruff's head before turning back toward the path. if the puppy squirms out the deus' arms, she'll have to console the poor automaton over the loss of its new friend. something tells her, however, that these two are about to be inseparable. she wouldn't mind, really... the rockruff is awfully cute and it'd be nice to have another little one running around the house.

they continue, her with her head in the clouds and the automaton petting their new companion. all seems calm, collected, serene and she's left wondering if things are supposed to feel like this. the soothing atmosphere around them... is it normal? or does it just come from being at ease with the world around you? she isn't sure and the thought occupies her too long for her liking.

the fluttering of wings pulls her from the depths of her mind and she's whipping her head around to find the source of disruption. it's a rookidee, small and content with flapping around. deus ignores the interruption to give more attention to the rockruff in its arms. she, however, cannot ignore the small bird and so, she offers it a smile and a little wiggle of her fingers. she is but a speck in its world, though, and it continues on the path it has chosen. flying off into the clouds, into the sky beyond them. how does it feel to be so free? does it know how lucky it is to be unbound by the world around it? to be able to fly so close to the sun without melting from the wings?

thoughts of freedom and chains occupy her thoughts as they continue and she's glancing back toward where the rookidee disappeared to, if only to make sure it's as free as she wants to be.

the path she walks is aimless and her feet carry her with no clear set destination. she simply exists in this moment, wandering and wandering until something holds enough meaning for her to stop. it's almost ironic in a way, really. there used to be meaning, drive, to her steps and now it's a hollow sound against hard ground and she can't stop the shiver at its echo.

rustling draws her idle attention and she's looking with half there eyes. half in this realm, half in the next. half in the future, half gone. it's an odd sensation, one she doesn't want to indulge in. and yet, she can't help it. it's like autopilot taking control mid flight so the brain can rest and recuperate. except... she's been running on autopilot for too long and it's starting to feel more like she's checking out of her mind entirely. odd, odd, odd. her skin crawls and she's back in her bones and the trees almost seem to wind and curl around them. deus pays it no mind, content with burying its face into the rockruff's fur. she is alone in this endeavor, alone and drowning in the sensations.

the rustling gives away a dunsparce as it tries to scurry away from their feet. the poor serpentine creature flails against the ground, backtracking and literally digging itself a grave. except, the grave leads to tunnels and it's gone before she can get a proper look. do most pokemon do that when found? she's never witnessed it before. it fills her empty mind with thoughts of defense mechanisms and as they continue, her fingers wiggle at her sides, itching for the sudden satisfaction of bleeding observations onto blank pages.
