WHEN YOU ENTER THE FIRST FLOOR, a dojo student greets you. the tower is grand, smelling of incense and wood. sunlight seeps in through the paper paneling and windows high above. before you can leave the genkan, they politely remind you to take off your shoes and to place them in the cubbies to the right side.[break][break]

ahead, a gabite awaits the party, clawed feet stomping on the ground. the dojo student roars, "WELCOME TO YOUR FIRST CHALLENGE! YOU MUST AVOID MY GABITE'S EARTHQUAKE AT ALL COSTS WHILE LANDING AN ATTACK THREE TIMES." he grins, "YOU BEST READY YOURSELVES. MY GABITE IS QUICK."[break][break]

he guides you all onto the floor and waits for you all to pick your pokemon. a rotomi is stationed to the left, should you require it. as soon as you all summon your pokemon, the gabite slams the floor to send an EARTHQUAKE toward your entire party.[break][break][break]

The ‘take off your shoes’ thing had distracted him so much. He felt secure when he had his hiking boots on—but alas, rules were rules. He had to leave his favored footwear behind before they could even start on the challenge proper.

Well, I’ll get those back… later, he thought as he found the biggest available cubby to hide his hiking boots in. Now that his black socked feet were exposed to the world, he took a quick headcount of his companions—thankfully two of them he was familiar with, the third they would have to have a short introduction session later.

Avoid the earthquake and attack three times? He thought as he did a quick headcount with his companions. He was pretty sure Kaida had a Charizard, but wasn’t so certain with Iris’s companions or their mystery fourth’s Pokémon…

“Get off the ground now if you don’t want to get blown back!” was all he had time to say the moment he let loose his Altaria, the fluffy cloud. Scrambling astride the fluffy cloud, he then realized that this would have to be… long-ranged.

Something he was thankful Nami had the solution for.

“Nami. Ice Beam on the Gabite!” he continued and watched as the Altaria summoned a beam of arctic energy and attempted to laser in on the Gabite, leering at him from the opposite side of the ‘arena’.

A softened smile escaped Kaida as she stepped out of her shoes, bouncing around for a few seconds from heel to toe as she enjoyed the mats. Like grass, but less messy. It was perfect for a challenge. [break][break]

Her shoes safely deposited, Kaida made to climb the tower, nodding at her two fellow Rangers. [break][break]

Upon the challenge start, she tossed out Muspel, who wisely chose to hover over the ground, warbling in confusion before she dropped a little to allow Kaida to spring on. Kaida clung on tight, patting Muspel's side as she barked out, "Attack it!" As the Earthquake roared across the floor, Muspel flapped her wings, sending an Air Slash at the earth dragon.

[attr="class","ithread"]iris takes off her shoes without a second thought. already changed into her dojo uniform, she adjusts it slightly as she walks over to the rotomi. the rangers had been kind enough to lend some pokemon to her, given their head ranger's presence. iris was still under supervision.

taking a few moments to memorise the pokemon's moveset, iris soon takes the pokeball and enters the room. releasing the togekiss, she waits for the earthquake to subside before giving her command. "air slash." the togekiss performs its attack in sync with Kaida Adachi's charizard, giving the gabite nowhere to run.

He gave a warm smile to each of his companions in turn. They were strangers to him, but there was no sense in being rude about it. "I'm Caprice Isaac," he said as they all removed their shoes at the door. "Everyone calls me Cap, though." He wiggled his toes on the mat as the rules were laid out for them. He'd been to weirder parties before, he figured.

While everyone else had large Pokemon that they could sit astride with ease, Cap found himself with less luck. As Saam appeared from his Pokeball, buzzing above the ground with transparent wings, Cap realized he couldn't just jump onto the Scyther's back. He groaned at the indignity of it all, but the guy said to avoid the Earthquake—and that wasn't how Cap was about to die. He looped his elbows around Saam's legs, locking his hands with one another to dangle safely—albeit awkwardly—beneath the Pokemon. What a good first impression for his new friends, he thought bitterly.

"Defog," he called to Saam, who sent a blast of air at the Gabite to make it easier to hit. Already thinking the next move ahead, he winced at the idea of using any attacks that would bring them up close and personal. But he may not have much of a choice.

notes: scyther uses defog on the gabite to lower its evasiveness!

"iris." she wonders why he's here, if he's not a ranger, but soon pushes the question aside to focus on the challenge. the pokeball's held firmly in her grasp as she releases an alolan ninetales. it shrugs off the cold as if it's nothing.

"I'm Kaida, hello Cap." Kaida greeted in a manner that could be looked at as friendly, if a little distant. She said nothing of the indignity of holding onto a Scyther's legs, whatever it took to pass the test, right? [break][break]

The Sheer Cold test gave her only a moment's preparation, and she hissed out a breath as she released Kjoll, the Onix instinctively getting in front of the horribly cold air. She only hoped he wasn't upset about this attack. The Sheer Cold slammed hard into the Onix, freezing over his stone body, but he was Sturdy, it would take more than that to take him out. The Onix painfully rose up, cold air hissing from between his maw. The Onix had some pride, and rumbled at Kaida, almost like laughter, and puffed a brief Dragon Breath at the Lapras, as if to prove his own survival. [break][break]

Kaida patted the Onix on the tail, struggling not to flinch even at the terrible cold. Kjoll was always reliable, and he served a rest as soon as they left.

The second obstacle put him at a bit of a quandary—but he’d noticed that his fellow Rangers were quick on their feet thinking. That was good and all, which was a blessing since they had to keep their wits about them whenever they were out and about in the wild.

He took a look at the shockingly bright-haired young man with them, before nodding his head in introduction. “Just call me Lars, and it’s nice to meet you, Cap.”

Analyzing the situation, he then pondered on what best to—wait, he had exactly one counter for this! Quickly shuffling over to retrieve the one Pokémon he was sure could handle this shit, he then fished out a Heavy Ball and sent out Elyan, his Shieldon.

“This should be the answer to that—Ancient Power, and hang on tight!” he called to the Fossil Pokémon, who braced itself while conjuring up a cavalcade of floating rocks before following the lead of the other two Pokémon that had gone before it, sending the Ancient Power towards the Lapras at the opposite side of the room.

The Shieldon braced itself with its Sturdy ability as the incoming Sheer Cold came screaming down on it.

Cap was all-too happy to let go of Saam's legs once the Earthquake had passed. Whatever it took to complete the challenges. It was a good thing he was more or less used to looking goofy in front of other people. When the group ascended to the second floor—Saam safely tucked in his Pokeball—Cap noticed the chill immediately. There were reasons he lived in Slateport, and it wasn't just the nightlife. He hated the cold. Before the dojo student could finish the explanation, Cap had his arms tucked as far as they would go into the body of his jacket, sleeves hanging loose. He shrunk his chin into the collar like a turtle, but still couldn't manage to shake off the chill. He was lucky his boss—heh, it was funny calling him that—had loaned him an Ice type. In a flash of red, the little Alolan Vulpix came soaring out of her Pokeball and took her place next to Iris' Ninetails.

The blast of cold that washed over the room had no effect on either of the Alolan Pokemon, though it seemed their other companions' Pokemon only held on by a thread. "Shit, that's cold," Cap said through chattering teeth. The Vulpix didn't need any coaxing, though. She closed her eyes and focused, drawing in telekinetic power to strike at the Lapras with Extrasensory.

notes: vulpix isn't affected by sheer cold due to her ice typing. she uses extrasensory on the lapras.

Cap was happy to be rid of the room with all the awful freezing air. These dojo uniforms weren't made for keeping out the cold, not the way he needed them to, at least. The next floor was much more relaxing—the sight of the cherry blossoms floating in the pool brought a smile to his face. The dojo student, though, was quick to get down to business. Cap followed suit, releasing Beowulf into the water. The Squirtle bobbed near the surface for a moment, hesitant.

"Remember how I showed you," Cap said, waving his hands encouragingly. Beowulf's brows knit, but he sucked in a deep breath and thrust his little arms forward. A wave of energy followed, engulfing a huge swath of the pool—including where the Huntail had swam down into the depths—and catching it up in a violent Surf.

notes: squirtle uses surf!

Kaida shook as she entered the next floor, shaking off the effects of the coldness. Seeing water didn't exactly help, but she didn't raise any sort of fuss. [break][break]

Kaida had the correct Pokemon on hand, a Huntail that didn't find much use, if only because she didn't find herself in water much. "Corpus! Hit the one underwater!" The deep-sea predator splashed into the water and promptly spun in place, sending a Whirlpool that would ravage its prey even when it dove low.

The pool made his eyebrows rise.

At the same time, though, he recognized what a Dive attack looked like. Seeing as his three companions had already gone on and used Whirlpool (with Cap being the stand-out here, him using Surf instead), he decided, why not add to the chaos?

Chuckling as he retrieved Ryujin’s Dive Ball, he sent out the Swampert who scampered over to the edge of the pool. “I knew it was a good thing letting you know that move… alright, aim down there. Right in the water. Use your Whirlpool, now!” he pointed.

Taking careful aim, the Swampert then conjured up the Whirlpool vortex of water, joining those that had already gone before him. Who knew how dizzy the Huntail that belonged to the dojo student was now?
