[attr="class","lancepost"]lance turns for one final look as she runs back into the flames with her donphan by her side. perhaps a small part of him wishes to be doing the same. but a jostle by emt craig keeps his thoughts at bay.

"that hurt, craig."

they take him to the nearest hospital and set him up in the emergency room where there are others like him: from the fire. he continues breathing through an oxygen mask but this time his vitals are being monitored. they fluctuate, which is why they decide to keep him here for longer. that, and also all the burns on him they have to treat.

two hours later, they move him to his own separate room and have forced him to stay the night. the vomit he spewed out did not look healthy, apparently. the television plays some sitcom that he doesn't really pay attention to and he distracts himself with a random magazine from the stack they gave him.

the door then opens.

"it's past visiting hours. how'd you get in?"

For the next few hours, Stormy helps sort out fledgling rangers, tackle the fires, organize groups that were without order. In the end, the fires are handled and everything is damp, smokey, humid. But it's better than the blazing heat.[break][break]

And with the end of the fight comes exhaustion. Although she is somehow without burns, and her breathing is mostly fine despite the smoke intake she's experienced - much to the medics surprise - she feels as though her legs might give out.[break][break]

But she doesn't forget to stop by the hospital. Even though she has to argue with the nurse at the front desk to let her see him, she manages. A surprising rush of relief steals her breath when she opens the door to see Lance is actually in the bed.[break][break]

"Don't worry about it."[break][break]

She smirks, approaching the side of his bed and pulling up a chair. She's still smudgy and dirty - so she's careful not to touch him. Her hands are clean, though. She did her best in her haste. Though it still surprised her why she was so eager to visit. [break][break]

"Feeling better? You look like shit."

[attr="class","lancepost"]his eyes stray up from the magazine only once to watch her approach the bed. "i look fine. i had a nice shower and everything. you, however, look like shit." his eyes drift down to her hands. "thanks for washing them."

laugher comes from the television but it goes unregistered. "top ten signs that he's totally into you," he starts reading off the magazine but stops right after the title, groaning instead. "fire all clear?"

Stormy slumps into the chair nearby, practically melting into it despite how stiff and rigid it was. She makes it look as comfy as a reclining arm chair, however, as her arm drapes over the back and her fingers dangle. She heaves a sigh, giving him a side glance but closing her eyes.[break][break]

"At least I'm not strapped to a hospital bed in nothing but a paper sheet."[break][break]

She winks, leaning her head against the back of the chair and sighing through her nose, a long, forced noise.[break][break]

The television acts as white noise, drowning out the soft ringing in her ears and the headache she'll need to nurse later. But she opens one eye when Lance reads aloud, amusement tugging a smirk across her cheek.[break][break]

"Oh, please continue, pretty boy. You've got me hooked."[break][break]

She completely dismisses the question about the fire - but she figures its a redundant question. The only reason she would even be here was if the fire had been taken care of.

she chooses not to respond to the fire question but her presence here by his side is telling enough. "typical," he chuckles before flapping the magazine to straighten out the pages. he clears his throat, dramatic in fashion.

"one: he leans in. if a guy is interested, you'll find that his body will lean forward toward yours." he has to stifle a laugh. "two: his eyes have it. they say the eyes are the window to the soul. return his romantic gaze with a quiet smile and let him know you're interested."

without warning, lance lowers the magazine and leans forward just enough. his eyes meets hers and he holds the gaze for moments.

"is it working?"

She blushes, an involuntary and surprising reaction given her own suggestive comment. Lance laughs and she mimicks it with a softer noise, but ultimately opts to humor her by opening the magazine. He clears his throat, making a great show of it, which only amuses her more, before reading out loud.[break][break]

At some point she realizes she's been watching him more closely than intended, actively listening to the stupid magazine tips.[break][break]

And it surprises her more when he lowers the magazine and makes an effort to stare deeply and purposefully into her eyes. The intensity is dizzying and she feels her blush intensify.[break][break]

"I don't know. Are you really going to take advice from a magazine?"[break][break]

Despite her tease, Stormy finds herself smiling.

"hold on."

he leans in closer to the point where he's invading her personal space. his face hovers in front of hers before he reaches a hand up to brush soot off her hair. he holds his position and looks her in the eyes, far too close for comfort.

"you're blushing. it's cute."

He leans in and she finds herself shocked and immobile, unwilling to lean in and unwilling to pull away. She merely watches him, wide-eyed and surprised - and probably suspicious - as his face hovers in front of hers.[break][break]

But it isn't until he brushes soot from her hair and comments on her rosy cheeks that she lets out the breath she's been holding. The redness intensifies and she pauses to pull away, overwhelmed by his compliment and whatever it is that's happening here.[break][break]

"And you're a shameless flirt."

[attr="class","lancepost"]her reaction is expected but it doesn't make it any less amusing. when she finally pulls away in a huff, he breaks out in a smile and leans back himself. his back presses against the soft pillows and he sinks into them.

"shameless is a strong word."

lance flaps out the magazine again and turns his attention back to it. a thought has been eating him ever since she entered the room and he finally decides to ask it, though his eyes remain on the article.

"why are you really here, stormy?"

Stormy averts her gaze and he soon melts back into his pillows, giving her the space she needed to steady her breathing. Sometimes she wished she wasn't so easy to rile up - it made conversations a lot more difficult than they needed to be.[break][break]

"What would you call it then?"[break][break]

She has a feeling, after all, that she isn't the first person he's made eyes for, leaned in for, prompted uncomfortable butterflies for.[break][break]

And she's even more put off by his next question and the way his eyes never leave the paper. Is he even reading? He's been stuck on that same page for a while now.[break][break]

"I came to make sure you were alright, Lance. You pulled something really stupid and I wanted to make sure it didn't cost me one of our best rangers."

he's not really reading, no. he's been reading the same sentence over and over again as a distraction because he needs it. but perhaps he catches on to it and decides to flip the page to the next series of tips. he doesn't bother reading them either.

"you should've seen the shit i was doing before you showed up." another joke, another chuckle. nothing changes and he stays true to who he is. "that's sweet of you but i'm fine, really. i've been through worse."

She finds herself narrowing her eyes curiously, suspiciously, at how easy that word had escaped his lips. He believed it, and it made her want to believe it too. [break][break]

The paper shifts in his hands as he turns the page - but she still isn't totally convinced he's reading. He's thinking about something else, she supposes.[break][break]

Her smile melts into a frown, however, when he opts to joke about what she thought was a serious conversation. She shakes her head, drumming her fingers impatiently against the plastic arm of her chair.[break][break]

"I see. But I'm not trying to be sweet, I'm trying to tell you to pull your head out of your ass. This isn't about you. I don't know what you're trying to prove, but you're reckless and it'll get you killed. It almost did."[break][break]

She sighs, looking away, focusing on the clock at the far side of the room. It ticks away softly and she lets the noise take over her senses. It's calming.

"i guess we're both a little reckless."

he breaks away from the magazine then and lets his gaze drift to her. he sighs then, wanting this conversation to pass. "i'll be more careful next time." his gaze holds as if to amplify his words. the sudden applause from the television is what pulls him away this time.

She has absolutely no idea what drives him. All she sees is a man foolish enough to put his life on the line. In a way, it painfully reminds her of herself - and she comes to the silent conclusion that he, like her, probably has his own demons. [break][break]

So she doesn't press it when he concludes that they both might be reckless. He's more right than she wants to let on, and that is made obvious in the way she rests her cheek against her shoulder, looking away from him.[break][break]

But his sigh brings her attention back, his attention drawing her back in. He makes a promise he can't keep because she knows all too well that they're just words. She says nothing until he asks a question.[break][break]

"Are you?"[break][break]

Because she is never cold, not anymore.
