Hoenn suffers its worst heat wave in years, and Gavin suffers with it.[break][break]

He can't even ride his beloved Corviknight in this weather — the bird's silvered feathers draw in the heat and burn his skin, and his Aerodactyl doesn't have the kind of stamina or training to bear him long distances.[break][break]

He and his cohort are only halfway to their destination when the prehistoric beast begins to flag, and Gavin's forced to find a spot to land upon the beach. The former fossil draws looks from several fascinated beach-goers that are ignored as the Rocket gestures his partner toward the seashore house nearby. They provided beach equipment and cold lemonade to parched patrons, and it seemed the perfect place to treat the heat exhaustion their Pokemon were suffering. It wasn't just Aerodactyl who was tired.[break][break]

"I'll get drinks," Gavin insists, gesturing to the bar, "you figure out if they can do anything for our Pokemon."[break][break]

He doesn't wait for a response before splitting off, meeting back up on the beach regardless of what the other had done. Aerodactyl opens its wings to selflessly provide them shade, and Gavin pours water down her throat.

“Aye, aye, captain!” Valerio responded to Gavin with unhinged enthusiasm, somehow indifferent of the extreme exhaustion his companion was feeling at the moment. His drampa shared his energy; if he was not as challenging as his owner, he would have sneered at the aerodactyl.

The rocket elite surveyed the backroom for something that his underboss was making him look for and yet he saw nothing but a rundown storage room for floaters and ropes—typical beach hose inventory. Valerio returned to where their pokémons were resting at the sight of Gavin approaching back.

He would sheepishly smile if his company asked him what he did yo help their dead beat dragons. “Well, we have the sea.”

Irritated by the choking heat, the look Gavin gives Valerio is withering.[break][break]

"Drinking seawater can kill you, Valerio." Noticing that the other had returned empty handed, he glowers at the salt-stained windows of the seashore house. "They don't even have a fucking umbrella or something? Damn it."[break][break]

Gavin isn't normally so sour, but Hoenn's heat wave has taken its toll on the Galarian native. Circhester was a city surrounded by white-capped mountains and suffering from perpetual snowfall. This was about as far from that as one could get.[break][break]

Aerodactyl shifts her wings as if trying her best to be the umbrella Gavin laments. Her rocky hide is cracked and dry; he thinks that even pouring seawater on it would be a bad idea, only causing her more pain.

“Woah, chill!” Valerio bolted out of Gavin’s change in demeanor, the circumstances being totally unexpected. The drampa’s head too twisted to see what was the commotion all about.

Though he tried to calm him down. “They have huge umbrellas around, although I don’t think they would be big enough for our pokémons.”

His gaze would meet the vast ocean in-front of them, Hoennians of all ages gathered to play by the seashore with their pails and shovels and floaters. “But yeah, I’m serious about the sea. I can still look for their refreshments but you guys need to cool down a little bit.”

Naturally, telling a riled individual to 'chill' had quite the opposite effect.[break][break]

Gavin scowls, murderous intent lurking in his expression, though he is not further antagonized by his fellow Rocket. It is only the heat that infuriates him down, the sun beating relentlessly down upon them.[break][break]

"Her hide's all cracked, the water'll do more harm than good."[break][break]

He gestures to minute fractures in the fossil Pokemon's rough hide, like dried mudflats. He had a good deal of experience with fossil Pokemon, rock-types. He'd never attempted to combat such an affliction with seawater but knew from personal experience that salt in any wound was a recipe for agony.[break][break]

"I got drinks," Gavin reminds Valerio, gesturing to the bag with several bottles of fresh water and lemonade. "What we need is shade."[break][break]

He fans at his damp forehead, sweat-slick hair sticking to it. He twists the cap off a bottle of lemonade and nearly downs it in one, offering a second bottle wordlessly to his Rocket cohort.

valerio looked at the other pokémon’s cracked skin, the heat slithering through its flesh as it dried further under the hoennian sun. the rocket elite did not contest to his underboss, after all he was not the one expert of rock-types. “the rain wont,” he suggested, but then he just realized the vapor would have come from the nearby waterbodies—saltwater. better to shut his mouth.[break][break]

he took the other bottle of lemonade gavin offered. “how about we sit down under the umbrella and soothe ourselves. we humidify the place. we can summon mist, fog, blizzard: anything that moisturizes the air. huh?” he gulped the bottle at once, as if competing with his company. “how about that?”[break][break]

Valerio is trying to pacify him. Gavin recognizes it in his choice of words, the way he phrases them like ideas rather than firm suggestions. More worried for his Aerodactyl than himself, the Rocket relents.[break][break]

"You got access to any of that?"[break][break]

His Pokemon could make it rain, but he'd come to the same conclusion as Valerio: a salty rain would only serve to aggravate the problem.

"I have Sandslash, but..."[break][break]

He trails off, lets his grimace speak for itself. The Shadow Pokemon was not the kind that could be brought out in public, lest it try to rip out the throats of innocent beach-goers. Gavin positions himself under the umbrella and looks through the pokeballs he had on hand.

Corviknight could make it less humid, which was the opposite of what they wanted. Same with the Rotom currently resting in his phone. None of his others had access to the moves Valerio was suggesting, but there was one...[break][break]

He sends out his Lucario, the bitter canine turning sharp eyes on its trainer. Gavin pours a bottle of water across Aerodactyl's cracked hide. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough fresh water to provide Lucario's LIFE DEW with minimal potency.

gavin considered using his alolan sandslash, something valerio never thought he would do just because the sun was beating him to it. “that bad, huh? i take it you haven’t met naua?” he reached her capsule, clicked a button before sizing up, and hurled it into the sea with force. the kingdra’s fins broke through the surface of water and it gleefully addressed its owner. “you should know she’s quite a celebrity around the region.”[break][break]

from a distance, naua observed gavin’s actions. lucario’s life dew tried to ease the discomfort bu the aerodactyl. valerio returned a nod and she understood she needed to chill the beach with summer snow. blizzard blew from her snout from the waters it consumed. the intense summer heat made the snow melt within seconds, it just meant she needed to try and try again. valerio smiled sheepishly. “it somehow worked?”[break][break]

"That bad," he confirms, tone as dry as Aerodactyl's hide. "I didn't derail an important task without cause."

As they're in public, the Rocket remains clandestine in his word choice. Each second that ticked by was a reminder of the job that they were meant to be doing and yet with Aerodactyl as his best choice of mount, they were stranded until she recovered.

He watches the Kingdra quietly. The blast of cold air along the beach, however brief before it was snatched away by the oppressive sun, offers the Galarian native a much-needed reprieve. He closes his eyes, reveling in it. Nearby, a few other trainers have noted the efforts to cool off the beach. Someone sends out a Lapras who contributes a blizzard of their own.

“right. what did i say about teamwork?” valerio relished at the other beachgoers’ efforts to cool the atmosphere, a maelstrom of blizzard invaded the slateport coasts as it gave temporary relief for those who suffered the hoenn heat wave.[break][break]

“now, there you have it.” the rocket chuckled. teasing gavin was kind of fun especially when he’s all cooled down, literally and figuratively. “ten more minutes and we should move. i know you don’t want to be late.”[break][break]

"We're already late," Gavin grumbles, though the cooling air has softened his bite. As far as he was concerned, being anything less than fifteen minutes early was just as bad as not showing up at all. He was a man of precision and schedule. "Five minutes," he amends.

He's exhausted, both from the heat and the stress of delay. He could just as easily fall asleep beneath the umbrella and turn off his racing thoughts, but he has a job to do and his pride won't let him rest until its accomplished.[break][break]

It hasn't been more than a minute before he's pushing himself off from the ground, returning his Lucario and mounting up to leave.
