he can't believe bailey cooper's best friend number two was also a dog enthusiast. it was only a while but kyle can feel it in his bones that they will get along well.

"look at this good boy." he brings the houndour up in the air as its hind paws dangle. "it's blue."

the shiny houndour was indeed blue, and while shiny pokemon weren't that much special anymore due to the wide distribution of magic drugs that change a pokemon's pigmentation, shiny houndour still looked nice especially when compared to other shinies.

they don't beat regular houndour though.

"the colour is really cute on him," dominic murmurs, his voice unusually warm. the corners of his mouth upturn into a fond smile and he reaches out a hand to gentle rub the houndour between the ears.

his own houndoom was napping a short distance away - sprawled out with all its limbs in various directions, and apparently enjoying the warm weather. dominic is silent for a moment and then turns to kyle with a question.

"hey man, is it true that you have like... hella fuckin' dogs?"

the question is normal since that's probably the only thing people know him for: not the bunch of things hnn has published with his name or his accomplishment in the gym circuits, but for having dogs.

"yeah, i have a bunch," he announces proudly.

kyle drops his houndour on the ground and it just stands there like it's not sure on what to do. there's a moment of pause where kyle just wants to watch what his houndour does, but when it does nothing, he returns back to dominic.

"do you want to see more?"

dominic watches the houndour just stand there and decides that the canine is perfectly cute even when he's not doing anything. he thinks for a second and grins.

"yeah, can i see the one that killed silas blackwell?" dominic asks, dropping to a knee to go through the pockets of his bag in search of the poketreats he knew he had somewhere in there. "i'd like to give it a treat. that ok with you?"

dominic sees a xatu circling over his sleeping houndoom and tosses an empty pokeball at it primarily with the intention of stopping it from disturbing the pokemon's nap.

"oh, i didn't actually kill him," he confesses.

he ran away from that fight because he doesn't want to subject his pokemon against roided up mons. that's just inhumane and selfish to get his pokemon killed for no reason when he can easily prevent it by disengaging.

"i didn't really see how he went, yeah, sorry."

kyle brings his houndour up again. "you can give it to him instead," he tells him.

dominic lets the information rest for a moment in order to process kyle's words. it doesn't really change anything, or at least, not in any significant way.

"huh," he says eventually, grateful only for the fact that his default face is expressionless. dominic straightens and offers the poketreat to the chubby houndour. "i've heard that he and his pokemon were crazed."

"yeah, like overdosed with steroids or something."

as much as he wants the entire thing was a blur, it was as vivid as it can be in kyle's head. not that it's relevant anymore with crazier things happening in the region among other drama that the media forces.

the houndour takes the treat and wiggles out of kyle's grip. it lands on the ground and looks for an opponent. spotting it, it charges at the helioptile and beats up the pokemon with the might of five other dogs in kyle's party.

"look at him go. isn't he cute?" he fawns over as he lobs a pokeball at the helioptile.

following kyle’s gaze at the houndour assaulting the wild pokemon with the rest of the canine pack, dominic almost doesn’t notice his own houndoom stir from its sleep.

a gardevoir had appeared from thin air, perhaps choosing to TELEPORT nearby. this is a grievous mistake for two reasons - firstly, the houndoom is little more than an attack dog, and secondly, it shares its trainer’s loathing for that species of pokemon. enraged at being woken from his nap, the houndoom lunges forward with fangs bared, apparently intending to tear the gardevoir limb from limb.

dominic’s eyes widen and he tosses out an empty pokeball capsule at the wild pokemon simply to stop kyle from noticing his houndoom’s particular kind of violence.

"he hates being woken from his naps," dominic explains quickly, turning to kyle with a strained attempt at a smile.

kyle doesn't like to be woken up from his naps either. he already feels connection with the houndoom, which was great, cause he loves it already despite only knowing him for around ten minutes.

his eyes go to the chingling on the corner. it's probably going to do some sound-based move or something cause they look like bells and that's what bells do-- make noise.

"is he gonna kill that chingling too?" he asks, looking at the pokemon.

pocketing his new acquisition with some distaste, dominic's gaze follows kyle's to the sound of jingling bells. his eyes flicker back to his houndoom, which was now awake and alert, its teeth bared in a silent snarl.

"let's not risk it," dominic says with a frown, flicking his wrist to return his pokemon to its capsule.
