She could, and yet she was choosing not to. Why? His hesitation had been born of the certainty that if he offered such a promise, she would accept it.[break][break]

Had she tried to make the other choose? Had it failed? Was that the reason for her reluctance?[break][break]

"It's not the choice I would make." There's a note of sadness in his honesty. Perhaps it will disappoint her to hear such a truth, but he can't bring himself to lie to her. "Because I'm certain I can handle it. But if you ever — if there's ever a time, Emma, where you think I can't... you say the word and I'll bury it, I swear. No questions."[break][break]

He grips her shoulders, gentle in spite of the desperation he feels in trying to make her understand: there was no deadline on this offer of promise.[break][break]

Of course it isn't the choice he'd make. It wouldn't be anyone's. Who would willingly give up the blessing of a God in favor of someone as tainted and cruel as herself?[break][break]

His hands find her shoulders and she doesn't stop him. She meets his gaze but her expression is lost even as she searches him for doubt. His resolve is sound and she wants to believe in him, but past experiences and betrayals are fresh in her mind.[break][break]

This wouldn't be the first time she's been told someone loves her and would choose her, only for the temptation of something else to lead them astray. And the last thing she wants is to bring them any degree of indecision - she isn't worth that sort of pain.[break][break]

There is a history in her eyes that he is not privy to; perhaps he never will be. He doesn't need to be to understand that this is more than simple doubt in him, more than a standard fear of power's corruption. How must it have looked for him to have babbled over the sighting over Articuno whilst being completely blind to how it had affected her?[break][break]

He remembers the ice he'd been greeted with upon his return, and sorrow twists in his stomach.[break][break]

"I wouldn't make you do this for me." This, allowing him the freedom of pursuit in spite of her own pain. "I'd never stop looking for my own sake, but I'd stop it for you in a heartbeat. You're more important to me than any power they could grant."[break][break]

He thinks of Articuno's majesty, of the solemn awe he'd felt even as he challenged it to battle.[break][break]

His words are pretty and she wants to believe in them, truly. They make her skin burn with passion unlike anything she's ever felt. Standing in his presence was more than she could ever ask for. To be embraced, loved by him was almost too much.[break][break]

She wants to be selfish, wants him to choose her. And even though that is exactly what he's proposing she finds herself unable to accept that that could even be an option, that anyone, especially Gavin, would willingly choose her. [break][break]

"I want to believe that."[break][break]

She is pained, her voice small. It disgusts her, what she's become. This isn't the strong, confident Emma Wolfe. This is the girl witnessing her parents murder, this is the girl shutting herself out, too afraid to let anyone else in.

Emma has not pulled away from his embrace, and Gavin's hold tightens around her as he hears the pain in her voice. He is not empathetic by nature and yet her pain manages to instill within him a deep sense of sorrow.[break][break]

She can't believe him, not yet. Not while the ghosts of experience still haunted her thoughts. This knowledge settles into acceptance, determination; he could not change her past, but he could endeavor to be a constant in her future — their future.[break][break]

"I'll prove it to you," he murmurs into the crook of her neck. His lips brush skin in a gesture of comfort rather than intimacy. "You'll see."

He crushes her closer, the embrace so tender and powerful and important that she feels weak. Her arms find purchase around him rather than limp at her side. She trembles against him, willing, desperate, hungry for his affection. Perhaps she's selfish, believing that if he is here, in her arms, he might stay. That he might not leave.[break][break]

A breath is quietly exhaled as his whisper tickles her neck. The gesture is warm, sending an involuntary flush of warmth down her spine. Her fingers fasten in the fabric of his shirt as his lips press against her neck. She tilts herself into the kiss, cheek brushing against his. Her temple knocks his glasses but she still continues.[break][break]

Her search warrants her a face to face interaction. Emma holds his attention for only a moment before plunging, sealing his promise with warm lips melding together. Despite the ferocity of her kiss, her hands are slow as they travel to his shoulders, his neck.
