mcflurry cracked her fingers as a wave of nervousness passed over her.

she never did like using her hobby for rocket's sake. it was -- it was supposed to be the one thing that was... that was clean. and, uh, that they couldn't take, couldn't take from her. and yet, sometimes, it's the best way to complete a mission, and the best way for her to get paid. and she needs money to keep doing her hobby, so it's -- it's a "necessary evil", as people might say.

well, in any case. she'd already set up her electronic piano, so there wasn't any turning back, really. the mission was simple: while the heist occurred, she'd have to attract a crowd while the heist went off.

with that, she tried to think of what song she should do as she adjusted her seat. well, she didn't know that many classical songs that would turn a crowd -- and she never got into swing, which usually does the trick. so... maybe something popular? well, a dance... hm.

let's start with one from a rhythm game. this one was pretty mechanically advanced -- even she had a hard time following the computer-like notes, but she can manage.

aaaaand --

immediately, a crowd starts funneling in as mcflurry goes apeshit on the piano.

Who is this girl, anyway?

While Valerio did not expect to be assigned in these kinds of mission, he did not expect to be paired with a very nervous grunt—which brings him to the question of how grunts are being oriented and trained nowadays.

But indeed, the mission is really simple. It needs a complete team and both Mclaren and Valerio—who is dressed as Vanessa—are the star-players.

The grunt’s fingers begin hammering into the keys of her instrument, and the crowd of Mauville are suddenly hooked by her harmonious melody. Vanessa, who is on the lookout for the other grunts to enter the store they targeted, joins the crowd as she taps her feet with every beat. And then she waves her hand like water, flowing and dancing with the every progression.

Her eyes meet one of their teammates and she immediately approaches Mclaren and whispers, “Keep it up, they’re already in.”

mcflurry nearly yelps as her mission teammate, valerio, shows up as a female persona -- "vanessa", or so he said before. but she's too focused on her music and her performance to do so, and her fingers roll against the keys like an absolute master of the craft.

however, as vanessa comes to her ear to deliver more information, mcflurry masterfully transitions into another piece -- using the loop station and pedal on her piano to establish a bassline and an 808 using the piano's various modes. the result: a more freeform, yet more modern take on one of kalos's more traditional festival pieces, the hasty remix conducted on the spot from mcflurry's mind.

mcflurry nods as though she's taking a request, wonderfully masking the actual conversation as she speaks in hushed whispers, masking her conversation in the music. down to the decibel, mcflurry was perfect -- a far cry from her usual MO.

"i'll, i'll have to mcswitch to my longer mcpieces if i have to, but i don't -- i don't mcknow if i can hold a mccrowd's attention with those for too long. tell them to mchurry it up...!"

mcflurry hits the 1:37 mark on her own music and starts a freestyle solo, the music itself almost urging vanessa to get back to dancing. the crowd's growing more and more -- and, unfortunately, the plan has a bit of a problem. now people are pulling out cameras, with mcflurry's and vanessa's performances going onto the internet presumably very soon.

“I have no fucking idea what you’re talking about,” Vanessa hushes before returning to the crowd, more and more people joining in as they recognize the drag queen from the previous beauty contest.

Violonists crashes the party, matching Mcflurry’s wonderful symphony, and nothing could ever distract the crowd more than a flash mob of dancers and singers feasting in the midst of Mauville. Vanessa glances at the store where they try to pull of the heist, seeing more grunts in their civilian outfits too nervous to do the first move. She turns her attention at her partner who is too busy to notice what is happening.

More distraction.

Vanessa reaches her capsule and releases her star kingdra, to much of Hoenn’s delight, “Now who wants to see some fabulousness?”

a pathetic sound escapes mcflurry as vanessa confesses to not having a goddamn clue as to what she's talking about. amazing. a tinge of exasperation hits mcflurry -- a rare sensation, since she doesn't usually think she's better than people -- but it goes away just as quickly.

mcflurry adjusts to the violinists quickly enough -- where'd these guys come from? -- before she switches songs from kalosian to a johtonian pop piece (well, j-pop) that used galarian samples.

the black-haired woman finally notices the grunts unwilling to move, and just sighs. the moment she does a mission right, something like this happens...

well, nothing to do but keep playing. mcflurry starts picking up the pace and upping the bass to try and hype up the coordinator's performance, trying to provide a nice tempo and crescendo change for the kingdra to work with.

maia, the kingdra, is also a star player in this heist—or at least after the grunts chickened out in their original plan. vanessa has no other choice but to improvise, and it’s a good thing she knows how.[break][break]

as maia proves to be a useful distraction, from the margins of the crowd, the rocket elite summons her runerigus to accomplish the task their teammates failed to do. “make sure to kick their asses as you leave.”[break][break]

she immediately returns before the audience begins searching for her, and she steps into the beat that mcsomething prepares her and breaks into an aggressive ballet and breakdancing, in the background falls the snowflakes from the kingdra’s controlled blizzard. “make sure to report them to the admins,” she whispers behind the lady right before she is taken by the crowd for a group dance.[break][break]

mcflurry sighed -- she hated being reminded of her day job while she was playing. moreover, reporting people? especially when mcflurry knows in her heart that she'd fail if she were in their shoes?

mcflurry begrudgingly nodded, but she noted in her mind that she probably wouldn't report them, and instead write up the bare minimum. that the mission (likely) was a success. that the job got done with the staff that were on hand.

but she tried to shake these feelings off, since they messed with her ability to play her piece. deciding to go into something to wind down and maybe go for an intermission sort of piece, mcflurry eased her previous track into a more classical kalosian fugue, with her own take on the melody.

flowing and more emotional, this should give vanessa time to catch her breath and time for the runegrigus to do the jewlery heist in a timely manner. or, at least, it should flow into at least one or two more pieces for mcflurry to stall for time with -- after that, she'd have to go into requests from the audience, which she's pretty sure vanessa will absolutely not appreciate.

contrary to the first few pieces that she played, mclarren breaks into a more mellow melody to give phantom, vanessa’s runerigus, all the time he needs to perform the heist.[break][break]

vanessa, on her part, continues to grace the open space and winks at the two guys from the audience, inviting them to dance with her. the dance is more of a tango and it involves volleying her from one man to another. maia continues spewing snowflakes above them, a majestic experience of summer snow puts the audience in awe.[break][break]

meanwhile, phantom arrives subtly at the store whose employees are captivated as well by their display of musical talent. the runerigus sneaks into the shadows and begins hoarding gemstones and other jewelries. the dumbstruck grunts are still at the storefront, observing the pokémon do the job that they are supposed to do. one quick glance at vanessa, and with her reassuring nod, phantom knows what to do: the ghost-type knocks off the shelves that lined through the store before sneaking back into the shadows.[break][break]

vanessa rushes to the pianist, hurriedly pulling her from the scene. chaos ensues as store tenants come to the jewelry store as the grunts become the victim of their poor suspicions. “that’s our cue. let’s go!”[break][break]

mcflurry starts easing into her piece as it ends, decrescendoing as the performance comes to a rest. start with some heart pounding music to catch attention, ease into a slow ending for a clap-worthy finish -- then go into requests after. the winning formula that mcflurry usually employs for street performances.

the black-haired woman stands up from her seat as the crowd applauses with whoops and hollers, and for once, mcflurry remembers what she's good at. what team rocket will never, ever take away from her.

her pride. her pride rises and fills her heart, and a big smile etches across her wide face.

-- but then vanessa comes in and rips her away from that feeling, bringing her back down to earth and to the matter at hand. quickly, mcflurry folds up her piano and chair and jogs away from the crowd, half of them dispersing, the other half being drawn into the chaos unfolding in the background.

...

the moment they're safely out, mcflurry briefly speaks, hauling her piano under her arm.

"i, uh. i hope you enjoyed the mcperformance."
