this meeting is bound to happen anyway so it is better to make it start.[break][break]

the ranger headquarters is just a few miles outside the vantage headquarters and yet selena and Laurence Anderson have not yet officially met. the kalosian has no idea what to expect from lars, and to be honest, she does not expect him to do either. but their jobs as representatives of the league in the city plays a major role in keeping the age of tranquility that has long been maintained in the eastern coasts. with the threats all over lilycove, especially with the unanticipated presence of pirates in the region, she knows she needs to cooperate with a few more allies if it is for the welfare of her people.[break][break]

selena has been tapping her feet for seven straight minutes as she finds a comfortable spot on the couch. she retrieves some of the magazine folded on the coffee table and pretends to busy herself as she patiently waits for the lars to arrive. lucifer, her ever dependable umbreon, sleeps on her feet and does not try to hide his own exhaustion. the morning jog is atypical of his usual sunday routine and going with selena on an unexpected visit is the last thing on his list.

He knew as much that this would be inevitable.

While he had only heard about bits and pieces from his friend with regards to the incident at Littleroot (this was one incident the public would not let go of easily) the fact of the matter was that there was one of the Rangers who had reported to be initially deceased at first.

At first.

However, said Ranger had apparently been found alive the next day looking none the worse for wear. He knew as much since he had already met Kaida not too long after the incident and had warned her about meeting one of the council members who wanted to have them sentenced, to face what had happened.

Always jumping to conclusions… he thought as his brows furrowed in concern as he approached the reception area.

“Miss Selena?” he inquired once he was close enough. “Sorry I kept you waiting. Please, follow me.”

boltund’s head bolts out at the sight of the stranger, an unfamiliar face in the canine’s memory, but selena’s calm demeanor immediately halts its aggression. “that’s just the way raijin is. don’t mind him,” she tells lars. “after you.” [break][break]

it’s the first time selena has entered the ranger’s headquarters. the design is a stark contrast against lilycove’s gym, her home. her preferences lean on her kalosian roots that is why the designs has more regal elements to it. but hey, to each her own. as she enters his office, the lady stands by the doorway waiting for the other person to offer her a seat. but she does not want to veer away from her intentions. “we haven’t been formally introduced so i assume there’s no better time than now,” the lady chuckles. “but i guess you already know me as the town’s new gym leader.”[break][break]

“The last time there was a Gym Leader in Lilycove, it was… admittedly some time ago. Ran a freakin’ casino within the gym premises. The concept was… insane, to say the least. Thank goodness your theme, or at least what I’ve heard of it, is more down-to-earth and encourages critical thinking,” he remarked when she had mentioned her position.

While it was true he had heard of her from another Gym Leader he was in frequent contact with, fact of the matter is he was going to let her do the talking as he wanted to hear the opinions straight from an unbiased source.

“Please, sit,” he gestured as he picked up a stack of files from the only other chair in the office before moving them off to one side. Closing the door behind them, he then made his way back to his own place and sat down on the chair behind the desk that looked like it was a paperwork jungle for days.

“To what do I owe you the pleasure of your visit?” he trailed off as he waited for her to speak.

“i try sometimes,” selena chuckles lightly, letting off a humble and shy comment from the ranger’s remarks. some remarks her challenge to be a little... challenging. but at least she gets to teach some people something. she takes the seat offered and observes anderson work on his disordered worktable.[break][break]

“I’ve been here before you arrived and got your Gym installed here,” was what he answered. Sure, there was paperwork in front of him but he chose to ignore all of that now. His eyebrows went up slightly before he reached for a tin that was on the desk and popping it open.

There were caramel squares wrapped in clear plastic within, and he reached for one piece.

“Want some?” he asked a few moments later, his eyes never leaving her gaze. Hm, it was pretty hard to say what she really wanted—she hadn’t answered his question yet. He could only wonder what she was up to…

It was all so strange, really.

Ah, a sharp eye.

“Trust me, things have been quiet for the longest time,” he said as he retracted the offered can and popping a caramel square for himself. Shredding the plastic wrap off the sweet, he then popped it into his mouth before casting a wary eye over the pink-haired woman.

“I rather like working out in the field. I don’t like being stuck inside a stuffy office. The only time that I’m here is to file paperwork. Why do you ask?” he inquired.

That was curious. Lars wondered why she was asking such questions. Was she looking for dirt about the Rangers? Much as he wanted to raise his eyebrows in inquiry, he decided to play the waiting game too.

Unlike his Gym Leader friend, she was more…calculating. At least that was the observation he was getting from her.

“i believe there are concerns with the way rangers are being... handled.” the piece of information is just a bait, of course. it is not like hoennians are unaware of how poor of a performance their pride and joy delivers. the mess from the new year is enough to cause such strife but it seems like the littleroot incident has drawn the final straw. “but i also believe you're doing your job well. if not, there will be no new rangers who trust your leadership.”[break][break]

the pinkette straightens her sit and watches the head ranger respond with her admission. “so how do you fare with these criticisms? i have a feeling you're someone who takes them with a grain of salt.”

“More like… the way we’re not being shown our proper due,” Lars rumbled. Oh, Arceus, it was like the debacle he’d witnessed with the so-called ‘water worshipper’, one Olivia Abbiati, who had noticeably taken things into their own hands without even asking the rest of the Council what they thought of the plan.

And then there was also the tiny little fact that his division was almost shunted aside without warning. He didn’t know how that crazy-ass woman had survived not being bisected in half by the other Council members.

There were so many things he didn’t agree to, but he decided to keep those quiet. For now. He was just watching…

“Not just a grain. An entire factory, if I would completely be honest,” he replied a few moments later, snickering in his head. Sure, he used to be the ‘saltiest man alive’ around the region, but not so much these days—however, taking everything with a grain of high-grade kosher salt was something he did frequently.

“You can never be too careful around those higher-ups,” he let slip afterward.
