Much tempted as he was to set something on fire, he didn’t want to risk any structural damage, considering that the wild weather was still running its course in the enclosed space.

Although, for a few moments he stopped. The Cinderace and Dragapult turned to stare at him, because why the hell wasn’t he moving?! Not moving in a snow storm was guaranteed death, despite—

“N-n-n-no,” he chattered, rubbing his hands together as he finally picked up the pace and moved forward. The voice was still nagging at him—

It couldn’t be.

No.

Absolutely not.

“S-s-s-stay where you are!” he continued, soldiering on through the cold.

His Dragapult was certainly not having a good time at all. The weather was cold, damn it!

Staying as close to Adam and the Cinderace as possible, the Dragapult began looking around, wondering if he could pick up on any sign of the invader—or invaders, considering that this was definitely caused by a Pokémon somewhere—and catch them by surprise.

“Hide,” he hissed in the ghostly dragon’s direction, who then took up a position via Phantom Force, slipping into the shadows and following Adam and the Cinderace from there.

The bipedal rabbit Pokémon then conjured up a small-enough fireball to keep them both warm as they continued to battle through the sudden weather change inside, him holding onto the Fire-type as shit got slippery—rather slippery.

“Wh-wh-whoever you are, c-c-c-come out of there! I have a D-D-Dragapult ready to corner you!” he barked, never mind if his teeth were chattering because bloody hell, what kind of crackpot would use Ice-type moves inside a building?!

Since he didn’t want to be Home Alone in the… in the back room of a Pokémon Center spending yet another year alone Adam had decided to make the hike to Shoal Cave.

It was relatively easy getting there, what with a lot of people suddenly streaming into the place, wanting to get their hands on a Glaceon or two.

In fact it was one of the reasons why there was a lot of foot traffic at Shoal Cave right now: there was an entire gaggle of Glaceon in the locale, and practically all of Hoenn was descending to try and catch one for themselves!

…well, who knew if he was going to get lucky.

Waiting until the crowd thinned out, he readied an empty Pokéball, chucking it at the closest Pokémon that was most likely wandering off alone.

“Look, I had no idea!” he exclaimed, looking around. Okay, hold up, wait a second—

“Snow doesn’t suddenly happen, look around you!” he observed a few moments later. “My guess is that there’s someone moving around under the cover of the weather!”

To that he had an answer, teeth chattering slightly at the cold. Bloody hell, even the snow in Circhester wasn’t this cold! A red beam of light shot forward and his Cinderace shot forward from the depths.

“W-w-warm up the area!” he hissed, licking his own lips that were drying out due to the sudden weather change.

Without warning, the Fire-type took a deep breath and released a burst of heated air; the flaming aura it exuded warming up Adam somewhat.

“I-I’ll look up ahead!” he volunteered, and with that the shivering Dragapult and Cinderace followed him.

He was definitely not expecting to see something from home, right in this very cave!

“Huh, that’s a bloody familiar sight,” he remarked as the Snom was literally crawling around on the frost-covered ground of the cave proper. To be fair, he didn’t have a proper Ice-type, so might as well make this one his first…

A red beam of light came from his direction and out emerged his Cinderace—which he hadn’t given a name to yet. He couldn’t make up his mind about the nickname, okay?!

Right as the Fire-type somersaulted from the depths of the Pokéball, the Snom opened fire with a Powder Snow attack. Brr, chilly.

“Don’t go overboard, okay?!” he exclaimed, right as the Cinderace kicked up a pebble and set it ablaze—

A Pyro Ball attack!

Okay, maybe that was a bit of an overkill, but the blazing ball of flame shot towards the Snom, which had shrieked and countered with a Fairy Wind attack—

Wait, Fairy Wind?!

Okay, this one was coming with him!

The flames enveloped the Snom, shrieking as it tried to quell said flames with another Powder Snow attack, to no avail.

After the flames had burned themselves out, an empty Pokéball is thrown at the Snom.

If he was doing the math right—

The only place in this tropical region where Ice-types spawned was in Shoal Cave, so here he was.

He had to time his visit so that he could make the trek to the lowest reaches of the cave proper—it was nothing at all like Circhester, back home. Unlike there, where the snow lay thick on the ground, this was the only plausible place existing that was cold enough for the type to be found here.

He wondered if he was going to have to dive into the ice-cold water to catch a Seel, or something.

Hopefully not.

“M’name’s Adam,” he replied with the tiniest of sighs.

Well, that previous attempt at employment was a bust.

Now he was back to taking odd jobs again here and there. Just when he thought he’d finally found a place where he could actually have a roof over his head again; well, now it was back to living out of a suitcase once more.

Accompanying him was a Dragapult, who at the moment was mostly invisible—had it not been for the cackling Dreepy that were resting on the ‘fins’ that constituted its face.

“Hope nothing too bad goes down today.”

It somehow felt like a mockery.

That there was something about equivalent exchange and all that, in the world.

Adam knew that in order to gain something worthwhile, something of equal value must be lost, and that was very apparent in so many ways.

Kind of like how he found himself wandering around the Rusturf Tunnel, unperturbed by the multiple tunneling Steelix and Onix that were causing a racket. Enough to wake up the damned dead.

“Bloody hell, don’t you all know how to keep quiet?!” he grumbled, sticking a finger in his ear as he took aim, and threw a Pokéball at the nearest wild Pokémon that had gotten too close for comfort!

He couldn’t help but notice one thing—

At least, the good thing here was that he was a morning person, so he would definitely take up the offer with joining Walter in the early mornings. His Pokémon were early risers too, so that helped.

Tilting his head at his new employer, he inquired, “You’re… you’re not from around Hoenn, are you?”

There was something about the other man’s accent that was tripping him up. Much like how obvious his Galarian accent was bleeding through right now, there was something he couldn’t put a finger on.

Maybe he’d find it in time; maybe not. It really depended, though.

“Asides from that—” he was about to continue when a Pokémon came drifting in, and thankfully he wasn’t scared of ghosts or the like. There were actually two candies in its mouth, and he blinked, confused as the Pumpkaboo stopped by him first.

“Huh… is this your Pokémon?” he continued, taking one of the candies in its mouth.

He wondered if he could contact his sister—after all, she was the only one he would trust regarding this.

However, he had no intention to get his family back in Galar involved in what he was about to get himself into. There was a reason he distanced himself from them after all.

And besides… he didn’t have anything much left at this point.

“I can make any necessary amendments to this, correct,” he confirmed as he looked over the papers. At least—at least now, he wouldn’t be literally living out of his suitcase and on the road like some fucking hermit who did some quick sideline jobs just to get some money.

“I do have a question, though, do—do you have a wide-enough space where I can practice my jousting,” he added with a chuckle, his accent bleeding through.

“I have a license to wield a halberd, but shame it’s only valid in Galar; anything that falls under the realm of bloody bladed weapons has to be registered and it has been a major pain in the arse doing all that paperwork just for me to legally carry that around with me.”

He was fiddling with the pen, spinning it around his fingers as he reread the contract and made sure to go over the fine print.

“You’re fine with any means of combat, correct?” he followed up afterward. Oh, but it wasn’t just jousting he knew…

And then, there it was.

The question of morality.

At least he could appreciate the other man’s honesty when it was laid bare.

“Look—” he began, taking a deep breath before he composed himself for a few moments and tried again.

“There was a reason I left Galar. Asides from the fact that it was too chaotic over there, people who are hiring mercenaries for dirty jobs are looked down upon in general. As that was what I did prior to arriving here in Hoenn—whatever work was there, I took.”

And to himself, he completed the rest of the sentence, Even if it means having to get one’s hands dirty. After all, isn’t that what mercenaries do? Get the job done, fuck the ethics.

Even if he didn’t look like he’d killed previously, he knew that his own hands were already dirty. That was also another reason why he chose not to associate himself with his family back home; as it was he was already the heir; however when word got out regarding all the dirty shit he’d done, he’d definitely be labeled the black sheep.

Yet he did not care.

“I appreciate the honesty,” he added quietly. “As long as the innocent stay out of it, what’s important to a mercenary is to get the job done—regardless of the morality and ethics involved.”

And that was also why he kept that sideline of his a secret.

Going straight to the point, eh?

At least he wasn’t going to be beating around the bush.

“I’ll take anything at this point. Nobody wants a long-term bodyguard, I’m always being hired out for one-off jobs. It’s hard getting the cash together, and even harder finding a permanent place to settle down.”

He used to have a place in Lilycove, but that was only while he was still working at the now-defunct rival of the HNN. Rent and all the other fees had driven him out to live on the streets, honestly.

Key words here being “used to”.

“Rent is expensive, bills are expensive. I’d do anything for a steady source of income as well as a more permanent roof over my head at this point.”

When he said anything—
