well, well, well. Hello again, Isaac Merlo

It was good to see Isaac could be quick on the uptake.

Now. What to use to demonstrate...?

Doug looked around casually; there were... many people around. Many children, too.

He gestured for Isaac to follow him, casually moving back towards the healing bay tent— his stomping grounds as a member of the carnival's medical staff.

As he entered the tarp, he casually handed Isaac over a small sign to hang outside, which read: 'Busy. Unless an emergency, knock before entering.'

Not the most succinct of signs, but it did the job.

Finally in the privacy of the tent, Doug casually strolled up to his table, before leaning back against it.

"Alright." He paused. "Naturally, I'll be demonstrating on myself."

He knew what would happen on himself— it was everyone else that he was very iffy on.

"So..." He reached into his breast pocket as he rounded around the table, standing behind it like he were manning his own stall... before suddenly ramming a military combat knife onto it. "I'll be using this to demonstrate. Please hold the applause, I've not begun yet."

He paused.

"You're not squeamish, are ya?" He asked as he casually slipped one of his gloves off his left hand.

God, he hoped not. He didn't want to clean up any more vomit today. Way too many kids had passed through the healing bay with tummy aches already.

Picking up his knife, he looked over it critically, examining the edge. He didn't take as much care of it as he did his tools of trade, but it seemed to still be in good condition.

Regardless of whether Isaac had a strong stomach or not—

SLAM.

It did not change the fact that Doug had just rammed his knife straight through his pinkie, severing it at the knuckle from the rest of his hand.

Doug was beginning to suspect Isaac might not be aware of who he was talking to— as in 'Avatar status unknown'.

Which was... huh.

Perhaps rocket was not doing as good of a job at keeping its members informed as it should.

Well, at least they were on the same footing on that front.

A small smile graced Doug as his new guinea pig— er, fellow researcher immediately showed off his worth by releasing several pokemon famously capable of some form of regeneration.

"Much appreciated, my friend. That said— those methods of regeneration are currently being studied all over the world, by men much more qualified and brilliant than I." Not medics, per say, but scientists seeking a myriad or so of applications.

"I... have my own, unique research, you could say." He said.

Before smiling broadly at Isaac.

"Need a preview?"

"No? Huh." He would just have to ask Queen— er, PR specialist luka chêne later if he ran into her.

Mesprit offered no real answers to his query, and the young doctor did look even remotely surprised. She and Tapu Lele shared more than a color scheme, after all.

"Hmm. May I examine your gem again, Ms. Mesprit? For your sake." He said, before producing another, bigger lollipop from his case. "I've got another lolly if it'll sweeten the deal for you."

He did not look nearly remotely ashamed enough at the pun that had dared pass his lips.

"There!" Through a combination of several pokemon, the monstrosity was brought under, its body collapsing into a heap of mismatched parts and quickly beginning to dissolve...

At which point, the 'caverns' became an angry, disconcerting red. The walls seemed to melt away to reveal a visage that might as well have been a photo taken from the moon.

Which meant—

"Oh no. Oh no no no! It's time to GO!" Doug yelped as he began shoveling everything he could onto the cart. "Get everything you can and HIT THE JETS!"

AN AQUA ASSEMBLY PT. 4

The latest installment in the franchise.

"Couldn't be helped, ma'am." He said with a laugh, moving to stand near FERNANDO SILPH. He had a sheepish smile on his lips as he spoke. "But, uh, in light of recent events— may I vote on moving the new cave systems higher up our growing list of priorities?"

They had several fighters to form a first line of defense against whatever was growling at them in the darkness. He could focus on his duties.

"Doctor Lele?" He said at his matron. "May I request your assistance?"

The deity hummed thoughtfully, seemingly weighing her options... before finally giving Fernando a lazy once over, turning her gaze back to her avatar's a second later.

"Hoh. Not too bad, then." He said, before suddenly pressing a digit firmly to the base of Fernando's spine, wiggling it about briefly.

"There it is. Uh... Pardon me the brazenness, sir." He apologized to the councilman, before dragging a glowing digit up the length of the man's spinal discs, a pleasant bubble-wrapper-like popping filling the air. "That should do it."

Through the other man's posterior spinal artery, and from there to the rest of his body. He could leave the scales to do their work.

At around that time— the ceiling above them crystallized, preventing Matias from lifting them back up... while also forming a barrier of sharp crystalline spikes behind them, pushing them forward.

"This seems planned as hell." He pointed out, scratching at his cheek as Tapu Lele hovered around the encroaching spikes, cooing at them while gazing at her own reflection on the crystalline surfaces.

He turned his gaze over to dahlia goode and FERNANDO SILPH.

"We're obviously being shepherded here. Are we playing along?"

They might not have much a choice, admittedly. How tough were these crystals? Was teleportation possible? Several other questions could be made, too.

With no seeming choice for now, they advanced until they reached a relatively open chamber, filled to the brim with tera crystals— and a book at the center of it all.

"That... looks like trap."

A roar that rocked the caverns, and an unfamiliar silhouette emerging from the darkness to reveal...

Well, he didn't really know what that was.

"Whoah!" He yelped, throwing himself out of the way as the unknown, yet vaguely familiar pokemon utilized a move Doug had never seen, the steaming water blasting past.

Rolling on the ground and into a kneel, he didn't even get to spring back to his feet before the creature had closed the gap between itself and the group, its dual tails lashing out violently towards them, one of them swinging towards the youth's face—

It smashed harmlessly against Tapu Lele's arm, the fairy-type deity intercepting the creature's approach with a fist cocked back, her body glowing and sparkling with magenta and cyan lightning—

Before she punched at the ground beneath her, a shockwave barreling out towards the Paradox Pokemon, flattening crystal and bedrock in its advance.

"I ain't going anywhere." He said, nudging his elbow against hers and grinning. "I'm vermin. Now that you've met me, you'll never be rid of me. Sorry in advance."

The mood was shifting to a more fun, uplifting tone, and Doug wasn't about to let that stop.

"Yes, ah do." He said, pushing his accent to its extremes with a hum. "I'm a water gun tottin', bumper cars ridin' cowboy, you could say."

He was crap at both though, as luka chêne and Isaac Merlo could've told her. Luckily, neither was present.

He was a second away from asking Yuina for her preferences, but given the earlier conversation... well, that could go badly.

"Want me to show ya?" He asked with a grin. "I like the water guns specially! I promise you won't get... completely soaked."

He shook her hand, nodding.

"Pleasure's all mine, Delilah. Call me John."

His friends called him Doug, but that felt... inappropriate, given the current setting.

"Oh?" He uttered at the question, his smile stretching ever so slightly as he lightly cocked his head. "Well... I must warn in advance— It's an odd story."

The sort that he doubted many would believe, without living in Hoenn for long enough.

"I'm a Kantonian too; we're all over the world, huh?" He said wryly. They truly were a blessed nation. "I moved to Hoenn after... well. You know."

Boom bam war and slammed; they got their government overthrown and ran for the hills.

He leaned his head onto the back of his palm, sighing.

"That... was some... 6, 7 years ago."

Which... gave him more than enough time to get acquainted with Hoenn.

"From my perspective though, it was... quite a bit longer ago."

The young man had a self-amused smile on his lips as he turned his gaze over to Delilah.

"Tell me, Delilah— have you looked into the most recent League and Rocket skirmish? The 'battle for the ancient ruins', as the news are calling it?" He said, before rolling his eye. "They get more creative with each passing season, huh?"

"I'm the avatar of Tapu Lele, not Spiderman." He said with a snort, pulling out the syringe before pressing cotton dabbed in alcohol against the little hole left. "I prefer to think of it as refreshing~."

Watching the other man begin to move, the medic's eye were unblinking as he observed the other's naked skin. Without his armor in place, it was easier to notice all the bruises created by the car crash and the occasional impact that managed to get through. To see the scrapes generated by friction.

And more importantly, to watch them slowly begin to disappear.

Doug's pen was a flurry as he took notes, watching intently.

"Not numbing." He replied to the other. "Healing."

This level of healing wasn't uncommon or anything for Lele's scales— he had mended much worse back when FERNANDO SILPH had been at the hospital. But then, the man had been still completely bedridden and in pain, hadn't he?

"These results usually take a lot more scales." Doug noted absentmindedly as he took his notes. "Fascinating... You were in a car crash, so I injected these into your posterior spinal arteries to preventively deal with any damage to your spine or discs first... to think it would go from there to the rest of your body so quickly, though."

In the end, Lele's scales, even when employed as proper medical tools, were still seemingly magical in some form.

He would've loved to be able to see through skin and muscle. He seriously needed to get better acquainted with modern equipment. He wanted to know what the heck was going on in there.

"Does anything hurt?" He asked Kazimir, looking the man up and down. "Mind moving around a bit for me? Tell me if anything hurts or aches."

"That doesn't sound right." He noted wryly even as he casually aimed at the horse without looking, before taking a shot.

The horsea made no moves as the next three shots sailed by, over and under it harmlessly, its countenance thoroughly unimpressed. Was the thing doing its best impression of a Seadra? Goddamn!

"... This is some bullshit!" Doug said as he slapped the gun, which spun, took a shot, and somehow managed to ricochet water off a couple of metallic surfaces to nail—

"I do... I have lost my right eye a couple of times before, though." He said, tapping at his closed eye lid. "That was actually one of my inspirations during the development of the procedure."

He could recover life, limb and organ if it was somehow compromised— so clearly, the scales could go beyond merely repairing what was broken, if employed correctly. That had been the starting mindset.

"Mind you, it's not just about a missing eye." He said, leaning his chin onto his palm. "A missing leg. A missing arm. A missing finger. If I can restore these things... if I can somehow make this procedure work 100% of the time— don't you think a lot of people's lives would be bettered?"

He let the other process his words, before shrugging.

"But I won't lie— my reasons ain't purely altruistic. I've got a friend with a fucked up eye; a colleague who's eye was torn out; a little brother who was born blind. I guess that's why eyes specifically linger in my head a lot."

"She's busy as is. Maybe Rayquaza could settle nearby for a while, though." He said.

Doing so if no real help was coming, though, would be nice, but useless. A couple of weeks, maybe months of relief from the volcanic ash would only exacerbate the people's discontent once Rayquaza was gone and it returned.

Mercifully, it seemed Freya had the right idea, bringing a smile to his lips.

"Yeah. Systemic action is needed." He said with a nod.

As the dragon tamer summoned one of her pokemon to assist, the youth nodded, turning his gaze over to the local public hospital in the distance.

"Good idea. I'll go ask introduce myself to Community Hospital staff. I sent a letter in advance, but I should let them know I'm here before getting to work."

Tipping his hat at the councilwoman, he bowed politely before turning to leave.

"... Thank you for coming, Councilwoman. Truly."
