it turned out the congregation of people had actually gathered around a small carnival performance. acrobats danced in the air with fluid, impressive movements, reminding him of the entertainment that had been the casino's opening. one was tossed into the air, thrown like a pinwheel star.

[break][break] Yumi Hasegawa caught up to him eventually, in the time it took for him to formulate at least half an answer.

[break][break] "it isn't?" he wore a look of serious contemplation, mulling over what he possibly should have asked her instead, only to be broken off guard by her question.

[break][break] "ah, yes. i suppose you could say that."

[break][break] he pulled away from the crowd, then, instead veering towards the souvenir booths.

[break][break] "i did not want to ask fern because," - they would know why i was asking - "i prefer for them to tell me things on their own."

[break][break] "but," he admitted, a little hastily. "i was curious."

[break][break] "i don't know all that much about fern's past."

[break][break] they were illusive, but that was part of the charm. part of why jayden had fallen in love with them in the first place.

[break][break] because her question was almost too embarrassing to answer, and he didn't want to admit it right away. because he had a feeling that, if she was friends with fern at all, she would figure it out anyway.

[break][break] at the topic of the seviper, his expression shifted into briefly pleased. just barely palpable in the stone-cold expression that was typically his face. he lifted it towards her in offering.

[break][break] then jayden stepped away from the carnival game, leading them deeper into the park. off in the distance, there was a congregation of people gathering and he wondered what it could be about.

the vendor gives him tickets to let him know that, since he'd hit so many, he can go ahead and pick a prize from the prize wall.

[break][break] though jayden has little to no interest in such a thing, it gives him time at least to mull over Yumi Hasegawa's response as he leads them both towards it.

[break][break] "tell me how you and fern met," he said, trying to be casual about it. in reality, however, he was painfully curious. all he knew about Yumi Hasegawa and fern delaney's relationship was that she knew a version of him that he didn't, a version before they had met. and when he'd seen them talking together so intimately at the gala, he had felt nothing but jealousy in the way that she could understand them in a way that he was still struggling to.

[break][break] his eyes explore the wall of prizes, all useless in their own way. there was a giant arcanine plushie that he did not have enough tickets for, a toy gun that looked like it would break in a fortnight, and finally... a medium-sized serviper that struck his eye. eventually, he handed over the five tickets he had procured over to the vendor.

[break][break] since it's only the two of them, jayden doesn't attempt to interrupt Hitoshi Inoue when he does most of the manual labor. he only helps here and there, just to make sure the moments go faster. in a few moments, they are able to craft a rudimentary base. more than likely, they'll send another squad after them to cement it, but it is good enough for now.

[break][break] "weird? weird how?" putting the finishing ends of a knot on his side of the tarp, he stands up and waits for hitoshi to finish his. from the time that he knew the other swordsman, he didn't take him to be the talkative type — so the fact that he was opening up now must have meant something important.

[break][break] hitoshi's kartana is quick to deal with the scenario, leaving them alone once again.

jayden cross is not a coward.

[break][break] Or at least, he hasn't been for years. Not since the death of his father released the chains from his wrists, allowing him to become the person that Dmitri had never let him be. Life had changed for him in the last several years — people who knew him in the before could attest to that.

[break][break] But people who had only known him in the after would have never known that. Would have never known the way that Rockets like THEO BECKETT and Chu-e Choi had beaten him to a pulp as a child, wouldn't know the intrinsic way that fear was built up inside his chest whenever he dared think about fighting against someone that was — unbeatable.

[break][break] Either way, the Rocket Admin found himself back into the crater's depth and accompanied by no one other than Yumi Hasegawa's bodyguard. Last time he had come to the crater, Jayden had done the job of chopping their way through it's center. This time, it's the job of the grunt before him.

[break][break] Behind them, the sky bleeds aching yellow, streaks of orange and red stretched around a setting sun.

"It's not our job to question it," Jayden reminds him. What Rocket needs and doesn't need is irrelevant. They had been given their mission, and Jayden saw fit to follow through. Around them, the fields open to great sentinels, larger than ones that they've seen before. Jayden feels like an ant among humans, staring out at the inhuman beasts.
