  to anyone who knows him, jayden cross is inhuman.
  
  [break][break] Yumi Hasegawa and parker jones (THEODOSIA, SINCERITY) think him inhuman and even people who care about him, like Kaname Fujihara (EMPLOYMENT COST) and mint frost, know there's something lacking. something missing. jayden's not a person built with emotion, his father made him that way.

  he was raised by a psychopathic father who did nothing but abuse him, emotionally, socially, and sometimes physically. it's traits that he shares with many other kanto rockets, like Cillian Quinn and THEO BECKETT. dmitri was a terrifying influence on his life and many others, including hazel albrecht (MONSTER) and surprisingly Elisabeth Fiorelli.
  
  [break][break] his growth has been a slow growing ache. where he had no emotion before (MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS) and was shy and submissive, his heart has slowly started to unfurl with the many relationships he's made throughout hoenn. it starts with a breakthrough in BROKEN HEARTS CLUB where he learns the tragedy of a broken heart thanks to Chu-e Choi and Cillian Quinn.
  
  [break][break] it grows in his friendship with mint frost. in COME OVER BABY, mint screams at him for not telling him he left for kanto. this parallels later in UNDER THE SAME SUN with Cillian Quinn where jayden is upset at the underboss for not telling him his true name.

  [break][break] the culmination of that friendship is seen in a post-gg thread UNTANGLED, where both characters expose their darkest secrets to one another. but this is just one of the many friendships that has slowly started to peel back the layers of jayden's formerly non-existent heart.
  
  [break][break] in the last ac check, i talked about his relationships with Ashley Shepard and Isaac Merlo which, too, have broken him. small cracks in his exterior that eventually allow him to open up to people like Naomi Sato (UNOWN EXCHANGE), seeing her as a sibling alongside Cillian Quinn as seen in LIGHT UP THE WORLD. this also allows him later to blindly trust people like Elisabeth Fiorelli, even when all evidence points to otherwise (POISON FOR GOOD, POISON FOR EVIL.)
  
  [break][break] the most important example of jayden's change is to be seen in his relationship with fern delaney. they meet first in STOLEN CABBAGES, where an accidental trigger word causes jayden to reveal more emotions in this single thread than he has shown to others in a lifetime of interaction. eventually, he and fern delaney start to "see" each other in WESTERN WIND, but it takes several more threads (FIVE MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT, WHITE WINTER HYMNAL) for jayden's heart to open to them.
  
  [break][break] he can't even admit it, not in those words (SYMPHONY OF LIGHTS & DEJA VU). it's only in superposition, after fighting the monstrous mist-version of his dead brother, that jayden can even admit to being in love with them.
  
  

  [break] slowly but surely, jayden learns not just emotion but the importance of independence as he uses his role as an admin to indoctrinate more people into rocket. he is still working on bringing fresh blood into kanto to replace the losses of meteno, as seen with Kaname Fujihara in EMPLOYMENT COST. he takes on the role of a mentor as usual, including Isaac Merlo, mint frost, Hitoshi Inoue and Kouji Matsubara (KOWTOW, RATS IN THE CELLAR, TURBULENT RECRUITMENT) and even participates in the SPECTRA TRIALS as an evaluator. however, all that is only made possible due to the relationships of people he met over time.
  
  [break][break] for a long time, jayden's emotional journey is on an uphill climb. the death of his father allows this, his subsequent friendships strengthen it. the wings of freedom fly him so high, closer and closer to the sun.

  [break][break] jayden was raised to be nothing but a tool for rocket. a weapon, if you will. hoenn rocket supports this when they first make him a beast after his selfless desire to protect his underbossses in the SOOTOPOLIS RAID, and to make him admin of offense and recruitment. his fate has been decided for him, as is his birthright talked about with Elisabeth Fiorelli in PRISMACOLOR.
  
  [break][break] nothing jayden ever does matters, which is the exact opposite of what people like fern delaney and mint frost try to teach him.

  his humanization manifests - weakness - in his arc with Ashley Shepard and Isaac Merlo. when he finds a traitorous Ashley Shepard in I SEE RED, he spares him. this runs parallels to Isaac Merlo and Ashley Shepard's story, where Ashley Shepard does not exercise restraint against his best friend, resulting in the lost of his eye.
  
  [break][break] that hurt tumbles into fresh new ones, each time a member of rocket defects to the league. first Ashley Shepard (even though he ended up coming back), then Remiel Calcifet, Razz Kingsman, CIAN MAHER, Rowan Wrynn, Remiel Calcifet... the list goes on and on.
  
  [break][break] initially, because jayden was not built to be human, these things don't seem to effect him on the outside. his loyalty to rocket reigns true. but a trip to the borders with fern delaney in WOLVES WITHOUT TEETH reveal his true feelings regarding these defections, these betrayals, revealing that even a thousand tiny cuts can create an ever deepening crater of hurt.
  
  [break][break] a hatred burns a hole in his chest, one that he doesn't even recognize until later, starting with MATIAS SILPH and his killing of Chu-e Choi in APRES MOI. then later, when he learns of Razz Kingsman's deceit in CATASTROPHIC. he shares his feelings with Cillian Quinn in under the same sun, which culminates in PREY where he punches Rowan Wrynn in broad daylight. an impulsive gesture, something that he would have never done prior, without all those emotions from the border effecting him.
  
  [break][break] HEY BESTIE highlights the true reunion between CIAN MAHER and jayden cross, exploring jayden's hurt for rocket traitors even further.
  
  [break][break] in EVERY TRUTH, he sees Chu-e Choi. this is the capstone of their arc, where jayden and Chu-e Choi finally can talk about their feelings, and the feelings that were never spoken about. in a former thread, WHAT WE DESERVE, THEO BECKETT implied it but jayden couldn't believe it. hearing it straight out of the ex-underboss' is a shock that rocks him from where he stands, rippling into an argument with fern delaney in DEJA VU. jayden's exploration of his feelings of love is pivotal to him as a character — because he never had it growing up.
  
  [break][break] but that thread also highlights another, catastrophic mistake jayden makes. he allows Chu-e Choi to go, just like he let Ashley Shepard go, only for him to return to rocket.
  
  [break][break] the climax comes in BURY ME LOW, where declan walsh punishes him for his mistakes, giving him a permanent wound in the form of a darkrai branding. walsh reminds him, just like his father would have reminded him, and just like THEO BECKETT will later remind him of his duty to rocket. of his inhumanity. of his failure.
  
  [break][break] jayden was always vicious — it's what people like parker jones are afraid of, and why he became beast — but it's easy to forget. many people mistake him for nonthreatening, thanks to his blank slate of a personality. but these small hurts erode at his slate overtime, revealing the monster that lies within.
  
  [break][break] in postdormitum, he dramatically attacks many members of the league, highlighting his hatred for them and boldening his loyalty for rocket.
  
  [break][break] he fights against Elinor Anderson in CONFLICT, calling back to their fight in littleroot. he accuses her for nepotism in the league, even convincing her of it himself. the end scene is a prelude to the untethered state of his mind — you can see it in the way mint reaches for him, only to pull away, in the burning icy landscape that articuno left behind.
  
  [break][break] he fights ruthlessly against Greyson Connors in CAVE, and attacks freya morningstar point-blank in GATEKEEP, accusing her of her uselessness in the sootopolis raid of letting it fall. all this impulsive and ruthless aggression, which is only pushed because of his punishment with declan walsh, culminates in ALL THINGS END, when he makes the drastic mistake of going against THEO BECKETT's order. later, he's punished for it in BLACKHOLE.
  
  [break][break] these feelings only continue forth in GOODBYE GALAR where, despite years of peace, jayden cannot know it. he feels unsettled and experiences night terrors all throughout those twenty years, the influence of his father within him still. in DISSEMINATE II, he's strongly vocal about his hate for the league and MATIAS SILPH, believing him to be the true threat to rocket's power with their poisonous, foolish ideals.
  
  [break][break] when he goes into the RKS, and sees the fake WALSH, jayden's reaction to him is immediate, strengthened by the reminder of his punishment. with both priam conrad and BARNABY FINCH, he flees away from the hologram. even though he knows better, even though normally he would have been professional and held his feelings at bay, the emotions he feels are too strong. and getting stronger still.
  
  

  
  
  [break] as jayden's frayed mind spirals further, you see him become blind with rage and hatred in CRUCIFY. at BARNABY FINCH's request, he tortures their prisoner Caleb Harcourt. although caleb and jayden do not have much of a history, jayden is vicious in his treatment of the ranger — using him as an example of all the other traitorous rockets that he cannot take his feelings out on.

  [break][break] the push and pull of his two sides — the side that made people like fern delaney fall in love with him and the impossible birthright of being dmitri's son — will continue to be in flux until they all but tear him apart.
