[break][break] jayden recognizes the turn of phrase. for anyone who existed within hoenn's history, it would've been impossible not to. like shards of glass, evidence of the infernal organization were littered all throughout the region's timescape.

[break][break] the cyberchase future that they'd been torn away from. the smattering of diamond hooves against littleroot's torn battleground. the force of a third organization's influence pushing, pushing, pushing —

[break][break] "do you know what they want?" he says instead, though the answer is obvious. "other than killing us, i mean."

[break][break] he had been in kanto when the star soiree had happened, but that didn't mean that jayden was absent from it's influence. but any of his interactions with the assassins had faded into the annals of history, set apart from individual influence. he still remembers the fervor sparked by staring at the blond man who had chained dialga away, how he'd pushed aside the league's transgressions in the face of a much more devastating force.

[break][break] 'THERE'S NO TIME.'

[break][break] knowing that they are short on it, jayden allows the conversation to settle as he watches his lost sister break away and tend to the shattered spaces, stitching together the landscape torn away by mere seams.

[break][break] red crystal glimmers and his attention is drawn. not to another portal of his past selves but instead the vision of his ungodly patron in the distance, teeth bared, eyes glimmering icy blue. it pulls at him, tugging away at the thin threads of hate and despair, pulling him away.

[break][break] 'WE ARE RUNNING SHORT OF IT.'

[break][break] "i'll go look."

[break][break] the cursed springs away from the alchemist, allowing his icy hand to guide him towards another fold in space. slowly but steadily, he witnesses the gilded touch of palkia's chosen intertwining with mysterious red ore. it glitters like a crimson river, evoking strong memories of his father's blood-red gaze. yet, it's not the fractured timelines that drag him towards the looming danger. it's the sight of layered rock and vivid red, a fissured basin, the glimpse of something fearful and ominous behind a glimmering tree.

[break][break] immediately and without pause, jayden pivots. his heart pulses with sudden resolve, as he positions himself in front of the panel to shield it from view, and locks eyes with the alchemist several feet away.

[break][break] "i don't see anything here," he lies. he lies he lies he lies. "are we almost done?"

[break][break] every moment spent by the coveted's side in that broken world only makes it worse. it only siphons away what is remaining, forcing him to continue fraying at the edges with each passing moment.

[break][break] envy takes to hatred like fire to water. one cannot exist within the other, and yet, both are side-by-side no matter how much the universe compels them otherwise.

[break][break] in the dream-world, everyone's desires must come true. but amidst the absence of the potent energy bestowed by the perilous chain, despite everything that should be otherwise, jayden's psyche relentlessly fractures. the cracks leave more room for the poison to leak through: for hope to arise.

[break][break] when he inhales those frosted tears, much like BARNABY FINCH, his mind clears.

[break][break] they will take the city. they have to.

[break][break] they will be free.

[break][break] the alarm sounds and that is their cue. even without the power of his chosen, jayden presses on without hesitation along with the rest of the crowd, the TOXIC CHAIN sinking into his flesh and encircling his neck. this time, however, instead of choking him — the glowing chain only provides him a surge of power, of hope, that makes heat flood through his body. his eyes are crystal-clear — he sees the past and the future and everything that they must become in order to survive.

[break][break] the past that he surrendered as a result of being a cursed child of rocket. the future that he'd abandoned, under the temptation of such ceaseless power.

[break][break] glimmering blue shine like teracrystals in his eyes as the fog clears to reveal the sight of megalopolan guards running towards him. one bellows, wielding its chain with intent to cleave heads in two. yet, an icy-white energy envelops jayden's chains and infuses him with it's toxic might. the admin breaks free from the crowd— suddenly, the azure-faced assailant stumbles, knees buckling beneath him, horror piercing his gaze as he collapses to the ground.

[break][break] his voice is his own, no longer shackled with the chaotic influence of a being greater than him. no, his vision is clear and his influence untethered.

[break][break] "don't stand in our way."

TOXIC CHAIN ABILITY: temporal terror [break]
jayden's toxic chain ability traps foes in a timeloop of their worst nightmares. upon activation, foes become ensnared in recurring cycles of terror, immobilizing them with fear and hatred.

[break] seeing their brethren fall, several other megaloplans run after him. but jayden is determined. even in the darkness, he refuses to fall prey to the feeling of powerlessness that had weighed over him in the cell. that he'd felt for the majority of his life.

[break][break] he thinks about what dionysus had said to him in the dream, how every choice could lead to a potential future. how every action, no matter how small, was his own.

[break][break] he thought about how illeana reyes had raced through palkia's plane, stitching together the broken parts of their universe.

[break][break] how he too ached for such strength. how he too wanted to save those that he loved.

[break][break] 'this is my future,' he thinks. 'the choice is mine.'

[break][break] THEO BECKETT's tendrils of black lance around his shoulders but he doesn't repel them. jayden recognizes the familiar embrace of a rocket better than any other, and it only propels him forward towards the guards that come to attack them.

[break][break] he spots freya morningstar as their target, her dragonfire illuminating her against the darkened web of their shared prison. jayden channels his newfound power, aiming to carve her a path to her hateful future.

[break][break] white energy ripples around his body, wielded by the toxic might of his chain, before blasting out. curdling screams echo through the air as several guards crumple to the ground at the strength of jayden's might, the power of his hateful will.

[break][break] if only they could feel the pain that laced through his bones for more than twenty years of his life, if only they could feel the resentment and the suffering.

[break][break] but just like him, their choices were their own. their strength was their own. their terrors were their own.

[break][break] time is an endless loop, but jayden was determined - at least in that moment, with THEO BECKETT as his anchor - to break free from it.

[break][break] it's an addicting feeling, chasing the rush of POWER that floods through him whenever he enters the unending bliss of the ULTRA MEGALOPOLIS dream. jayden pursues the frozen footsteps in the sand, searching desperately for any way to release his god from it's prison. being human is not enough, not when the gilded power he seeks is so close and hidden within those invisible cages.

[break][break] but he can't. he doesn't. what he does find, however, is at the center of ULTRA MEGALPOLIS city, suspended in the same suspicious liquid as CHIEN PAO had been.

[break][break] "is that..." he asks Cillian Quinn as the two of them stare at the creature suspended, reminded of the same day that had cast SOOTOPOLIS into darkness, and the glowing fangs of a shadow persian unchained.

[break][break] his mentor doesn't even need to say yes for him to know.

[break][break] but just like everyone else, it is locked away. jayden nor Cillian Quinn can break him free from his cage, and so he finds himself in a cycle of repetition and repeat — forever hindered from the thing that he seeks. if only he could turn back the hands of time and figure out a way to free them all.

[break][break] the addiction of the dreamworld is too sweet — it grants him strength and power he has always sought, but never enough. he enters again and again, meeting those like THEO BECKETT or Grigori Sokolov or howard slayte. each time, he is pulled towards something greater, like tracks in the sand. the nauseous blink of the city lights guide him towards the burning vestige of PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] in the waking world, they could not be farther apart. yet in this haven, the elements of greed and spite pull at them, puppet strings pulling them taut. here, in this false utopia, they are the same.

[break][break] yet with each passing day, his mind begins to spool and unravel, fraying at the seams. his mind fractures like a spring well, threatening to shatter. each additional thread reminds him of those hours spent in PALKIA'S realm and so he begins to seek her desperately too. the holder of his fate, the alchemist of space herself. illeana reyes.

[break][break] but he doesn't find her. each time he thinks he catches a glimpse of silvery white, he is pulled — dragged into the waking world — to suffer.

[break][break] and while jayden cross and suffering go hand-in-hand, nothing readies him for the agony of being compelled to laugh at fern delaney's expense. the mockery wrenched from him slices his throat like diamonds, flooding his mouth with blood.

[break][break] it's all the more heart-wrenching when he wakes from each dream, chains coiled around his neck, tears streaming from his eyes and pooling in his hands like glittering stars.

[break][break] powerless.

[break][break] bringing his palms to his mouth reverantly, he attempts to breathe them in, as if it's liquid essence will be enough to remind him of all that he cannot have. of all that remains so bitterly out of reach.

[break][break] the wounds of a leaking interdream zone are no longer bleeding. time stitches it's way back into reality, forcing an image of a spaceship and rocket's brilliant scientist, racing through space to undoubtedly find mysteries that she seeks. hoenn is behind them but no matter how much he looks, he sees — he cannot see the fate of hoenn.

[break][break] he cannot see whether they survive or they die —

[break][break] whether it is ruination that awaits them or not —

[break][break] all he sees is the reflection of the tera crystal being returned to space, exploding before them like a dying star.

[break][break] and when he then sleeps, returning back to the dream world, he attempts to follow that same path. Cillian Quinn tells him that their sisters - his sister - is here. jayden can't find neither her or Naomi Sato — but that doesn't stop him from trying.

[break][break] he needs to know.

[break][break] in replacement, he tries to scry the truth from every rocket or megalopolan he meets. he tells them all that the mask is broken, untrue, even though there is no reason why. that the power they need lies in this world, not those toxic chains.

[break][break] he also questions them on their dreams and the knowledge that they are beholden to. but of all things, he wants to know:

[break][break] "who is cyllora?"

[break][break] and of all those he meets, it seems - ironically enough - that the unpredictable Shred Zeppelin is the only one who seems to make sense of the words that he speaks.

[break][break] as the grunt nears, he would see that the calm, nearly easygoing expression that he'd worn while they'd rubbed away at tera crystals for their resplendent captor was no longer there. in it's place was the nearly feverish pain of the waking world, ice crystals tugging at the scars on his skin.

[break][break] immediately, he sees the sea of bodies that had been shown to him. the feeling of endless power and strength that he had felt, sworn to him only by the TOXIC CHAINS around his neck.

[break][break] "i saw the corpses of the league," he said. MATIAS SILPH, Greyson Connors, PENELOPE LIVY. all fit to die by his hand. "the war was won."

[break][break] he flexed his hand, watching the ice gather into his palm, remembering the strength of the TOXIC CHAINS around his wrist.

priam conrad calls it a dream, but there is nothing dream-like about this reality. At least not as far as his own dreams are concerned.

[break][break] Jayden has always been much more familiar with nightmares, ones perhaps as cruel as the ones that DIONYSUS had cursed them all with those months ago with the help of a timely God. Perhaps only the power of Dialga could've made him different, more normal, but as it was — this dreamscape was stranger than the poisonous mochi that they were forced to consume.

[break][break] HATRED simmered beneath his skin as he strolled under the city's flickering lights, in pursuit of the only thing that would cure his anguished heart.

[break][break] It was here. He knew it. He could feel it. The safety of that cold, dark prison had vanished, replaced by the frantic, nearly relentless pursuit of familiar power. His mind grew frayed, nearly threadbare, the closer he got. The more he neared that frozen source.

[break][break] With reckless abandon, he pursued that path, drawn towards it like an unbreakable tether of destiny, the weakening bonds of his ruinous patron strengthening with each passing moment.

[break][break] Jayden pressed on, not knowing what he would find around the next corner. But then, he saw it. A series of unfamiliar glass enclosures — within them, undoubtedly, the pokemon that had been kept from them. All were suspended in a strange, peculiar liquid, either unconscious or in slumber. His throat tightened as he stepped towards the sight of CHIEN PAO within one of the containers, only to immediately freeze when he saw a familiar set of amber eyes.

[attr="class","postbox"] what had that dream meant? the thought lingers on his mind even as the hot water bleaches the grime and the dirt from his skin, leaving him fresh and cleansed as a newborn baby as he exits the showers. slipping on the freshly-pressed kitakami outfits offered to them, his bottom lip worries itself between his teeth even as he watches fern delaney and BARNABY FINCH race to their prison cell, undoubtedly trying to be the first person to claim the cot.

[break][break] while their companionship is no doubt appreciated, nothing the empty ache in chest, the feeling of something amiss. something is not quite right, and yet it is not something he can place.

[break][break] not when the mask had offered him such an absolute truth, a truth that he had never once thought to have craved or to want. behind his eyes, he sees painted images of all that DIONYSUS had threatened him with too. the opposite future that laid possible for him should he not choose the correct path.

[break][break] 'this is the future you chose. is this the future you wanted?'

[break][break] memories cascade into his mind like an icy spring, teeming with a thousand fractures. they all fall under the heat of a burgeoning sun, each crack in the ice leading to another.

[break][break] which path was worth taking? which future was his?

[break][break] and how much did those TOXIC CHAINS take apart?

when he wakes up, he expects to feel the choking sensation of the toxic chains around his neck, not unlike the feeling of Lulu Flint's own hands. however what he finds instead is not that. there is nothing choking him. no breathless intake of air.

[break][break] no, he feels whole.

[break][break] the empty ache inside of him is replaced by a rapid beating of his own heart, a heat within him that spreads and spreads — a burning heat that scorches in him so painful that it is nearly frostbite.

[break][break] after spending time with BARNABY FINCH and fern delaney both, they eventually depart. it's no surprise when jayden feels himself dragged, as if by an invisible thread of fate, in search of it's source.

[break][break] when he finds someone he recognizes, their blue-faced visages so reminiscent of the holder of the WELLSPRING MASK, he accosts them. they don't want to be chained, nor do they know how they got here, but neither of these things matter to him.

[break][break] "do you know of the mask too? what did you see?"

[break][break] but whether or not they give him the response he desires — because he does not even know what he desires — the resentment wells in him like a spring regardless. it overflows until it bursts — ice catalyzing whoever stands in his path — and he continues in his search.

[break][break] on the way, he meets oscar clayton and priam conrad — allowing the latter to drag him along on it's path to observe the dream city. despite what priam tells them - that this is obviously a dream - he can't help but wonder if it is otherwise. everything simply feels so real, and the ice that gathers in his hands, the power that had once been restrained, is so easy to wield.

[break][break] but if this is a dream, then it is a damned good one. not too unlike the way that DIONYSUS plunging him into darkness had felt, showing him a nightmare that he could not erase from his mind, no matter he tried. he half-expects the appearance of his hateful dreams, of MATIAS SILPH or kyle lopez to appear, yet neither do.

[break][break] instead what he sees instead is the embodiment of something fortuitously ruinous:
