The stern, expectant eyes of the woman made Leo feel like he was sweating bullets. He turned, awkwardly, back to Peanut who simply looked blankly back at him. The Zebstrika snorted. 'What, you expect me to do something?' She looked away, stamping a hoof against the ground when a small fly attemtped to settle on her muzzle.

[break][break] However, lucky for Leo, his knight in shining armor showed up on the scene — teleporting quite literally into view. A dapper looking man, who was fixing his collar, and seeming somewhat sheepish. Not that, of course, Leo noticed any of that.

[break][break] His face brightened almost immediately and in no time at all, he attempted to grab the other man's arm and drag him back over to the woman in question — who was looking somewhat impatient by this point. "Yup! Right here, I got my man right here."

[break][break] Of course, Orion's question went unheard by Leo's ears — not that it particularly mattered. The boy would not have been able to tell him what the job was, as he barely knew it himself.

[break][break] "Oh goody!" the woman said, clasping her hands together. "What strong, handsome looking men —" Her eyes went over Orion in particular as she said this. "There is still some rubble from the aftermath — a broken wall that needs painting and spackling, some broken air conditioner units that need fixing, and of course, clearing of the construction site at the back of the building — those construction workers don't know how to clean up after themselves." She clicked her tongue disapprovingly. "In fact, the entire garden needs work, if either of you have a green thumb." She smiled, in the only warm, yet slightly condescending way, that a woman like her could. "So what'll it be? Take your pick!"

Leo yawned.

He had pulled an all-nighter the day before, trying to write a report for his final. Honestly, it wasn't his fault — he had planned it all out. He had known everything that he was supposed to do, had written an outline and everything! But before he knew it, time had gotten ahead of him and before he knew it, it had been almost 3AM and the final he was supposed to turn in was at 7AM. By some miraculous twist of fate, he had managed to finish and turn it in, but from the look of his professor's face... well, he wasn't going to think about that! Today, he had a mission to do!



[break][break] The club that he was part of had all agreed that they would do volunteer work this weekend in spirit of the holidays that were about to come up, and Leo was never one to turn down an offer to help people. After, what would his Mom have to say about that? Nothing good, probably. She'd always told him how important it was to help people in need, as long as he was able. It was good for his soul, or God would smile down on him, or something like that — honestly, he could never really listen to her rambling.



[break][break] By the time that Leo had arrived to the University to join the group heading to the volunteer site... well, he had been late. Hey, he had barely gotten three hours of sleep. It was lucky that Peanut was able to take him, and that it wasn't too far away. The six foot boy was currently laying lazily over his Zebstrika as she did all of the work, her hooves trotting through the streets of Slateport's Upper District with relative ease.



[break][break] She made a small whinny, and he looked up groggily, yawning. "Oh — we here?" Blinking, he slid off of her and onto the floor beneath. There were set in front several skyscraper apartments, and while there were many people bustling around in the city streets, it didn't seem unusual for Slateport. Before Leo could question it, however, a middle-aged woman came rushing out of a building.



[break][break] "Thank goodness you're here! We need all the hands we can get — wait a moment. Aren't there supposed to be two of you?"

"I'm hungryyyyyyy," Leo whined in a puff of breath, long arms draped over the counter top and legs swinging beneath him. Honestly, it was a marvel that his lanky body even fit in the enclosed space. Or maybe it didn't, and the boy was shoving himself in there regardless. It seemed pretty on point for the situation that the two of them had. Leo — who had wandered into the shop sometime last year, on pure accident in an attempt to find a probably much less shady herb supplement store for his film project — wasn't the kind of person that would let something as negligent as space stop him from doing what he wanted.

Glasses sliding down his nose, he huffed as he watched his friend (were they friends?) hard at work. Leo had stopped by earlier that day as soon as his classes were over. Though, it couldn't be said it was intentional. He had wandered into the lower district shops in an attempt to pick up some new film for class. Even though he was technically a Journalism major, and only a Film minor, he wanted to make sure he did it right. His latest project entailed him doing research, research he was currently procrastinating, in favor of hanging out with .

Plus, it wasn't fault he got lost. At this point, it should've been predictable.

The college student sat up slightly — pulled his limbs in, in favor of leaning a cheek into his palm as he watched the other man at work. "Do you have a break soon? Can we get something to eat?" His stomach grumbled. It was barely 11AM. He had just forgotten to eat breakfast.

Another person — any other sane person — would have noticed and maybe been a little taken aback by the dingy, maybe even downtrodden nature of the hotbox. The sound of leaves crunching in the air, a consistent yet methodical sound. The faint smell of herbs as the man in front of him crunches them into a bits and pieces with nothing but a mortor and pestle. The broad back, the muscular arms flexing on an individual hard at work. Everything about it seemed untrustworthy, seemed like everything that his immigrant mother had spent her life preparing him to avoid, and yet there leonício antonio del río álvarez sat, unknowing and unbidden, a sloppy smile on his face.

"ice cream! no, a crepe! wait..." his stomach rumbles, and he puts a hand on his belly to quiet it. "...can we get brunch?" his eyes are round behind their glasses as he awaits the other man's answer.

A couple married out of convenience, culture and custom, Antonio Demétrio Del Rio Romero wed Rosalia Clementina Álvarez Pais in late autumn, as the leaves were just beginning to change color. The event was a small one, made up of only close friends and family, but it was more than enough for the young married couple. Despite the fact that the events that had brought them together were less than idealistic, the pair seemed more than content to celebrate the joyous occasion and take the next steps in their lives together.

[break][break] The next five years were spent happily. With the help of oversea money, Antonio and Rosalia bought a house in Olddale Town and prepared to settle down. Antonio took a job with the local contractors — a small job, on a short-term basis, but enough to keep the food on the table. Rosalia stayed at the house; she was a home-maker, the kind of wife to decorate their small cottage with photos, flowers, and sewn tablecloth. Her selfmade curtains and knitted pot-holders were well-known among the townfolk for selling at the Sunday market.

[break][break] Eventually, though, their happiness grew stale. Rosalia wanted a baby and for whatever reason, Arceus failed to give her one. Again and again they tried, each attempt ending with the same small blue negative on the stick. Eventually, with encouragement from their peers, they sought help with a fertility specialist.

[break][break] "I'm sorry. The results came back, and we aren't optimistic..."

[break][break] Rosalia sobbed into her husband's shoulder, Antonio placed a solemn hand on her back.

It was why the birth of their son was cause for such celebration. Leo's birth was no accidental twist of fate.

[break][break] "Leonício, mi tesoro, you are my heart," his mother would say, choked with affection. "We made you from scratch."

[break][break] To which, of course, Leo would always stick his tongue out and say, "Gross!"

[break][break] He always got a smack on the head for that.

Leo had always known his father to be a hardworker. They did not have much but what they did have, they worked desperately for.

[break][break] Antonio's dedication was not without reward, however. He became recognized in the town for his handywork, so much so that even the local rangers took note of him. They brought him into their close circle, and it was not long before he had discarded his blue-collar work clothes for a suit and tie, often disappearing into the depths of neighboring urban cities to complete his 9-5 shift.

[break][break] His mother's voice, hushed yet harsh, spoken in a foreign tongue broke through. Leo was barely two. He sat in a patch of grass at the foster's farm, tiny hands surrounded on the muzzle of a baby Blitzle who was nosing it's way into his lap.

[break][break] "What do you want from me, mi esposa? Do you want the money to stop? Is that what you want?"

[break][break] The toddler burrowed his face into the Blitzle's fur, sparks crackling through his hair. He pressed his mouth against it's nose. It was wet.

[break][break] "¡Como quieras! Fine. Leonício, come here!" Before he knew it, he was being sharply tugged upwards. He stumbled, untied sneakers stumbling against the grass, as he was dragged back towards their car. He glanced at his father, who was running a hand through his hair in aggravation.

[break][break] His father didn't even look at him.

His father went on business trips — that much he knew.

"oh Dios mío!" she gasped, tearful. "Are these flowers? For me?"

[break][break] Leo blinked, looking up. His father had in his hands a beautiful bouquet of flowers, his mother's face flushed with pleasure. With a squeal, she jumped up to hug him, arms wrapping around him in an intimate way that made Leo turn in his chair back to his homework.

The business trips stopped. His father took a job more local, in the nearby lab. Sometimes a lady would come visit the house, sharing tea with his parents, when he returned home from soccer practice with his friends.

[break][break] Leo didn't really ask. He didn't think to.

The boy's childhood was of the perfectly idyllic sort. His friends envied the loving relationship that his parents shared with each other, from grade school up until high school. His parents had no qualms about showing their affection in public, either, much to the chagrin of Leo himself.

[break][break] Despite how he might have denied it in his teenage years, though, Leo was happy to have them as his parents. He had seen his friends' parents go through argument after argument, tearing each other apart without any regard for the son they were ruining along the way. His father and mother loved him dearly — maybe a little too much, maybe a little suffocatingly — but he was willing to bear it.

[break][break] He brought home an A, his father ruffled his hair, and his mom gave him a kiss on the cheek. He forgot his backpack at school, his father frowned with disappointment, and his mother said she would start a cup of tea for him to drink.

[break][break] Much of Leo's life passed uneventfully, even through college when he moved to Slateport University. As their only son, he was loving and dutiful, keeping touch every day and calling at least once a week. He was obedient too — at least for the most part.

[break][break] "Oh, oops! Sorry! I think the call is breaking up — is that a teacher calling me? Yep, I think it is. Bye Mom!"

[break][break] Hand to his chest, Leo breathed a sigh of relief as soon as the call ended. He looked up at the Zebstrika, who had been watching the entire conversation with narrowed eyes. The boy grinned, sheepish. "She'll forgive me. She always does."

[break][break] Besides, what was his mom thinking? Of course he was going to go by Leo. Who in the world was going to call him Leonício?
