"Woah, isn't this awesome?" Leo exclaimed, staring out at the horizon of the safari zone. The boy wandered the area with a white windbreaker, jeans, and some shoes his mom had bought him for christmas. Having spent most of his childhood cooped up in Olddale Town, he'd never gotten the chance to experience the Safari Zone, but he'd heard about it from classmates and documentaries. When his classmate had given him some tickets he'd won from a raffle as a thank-you for helping him to study for that Math quiz (had Leo helped?), he sure as heck wasn't going to turn down that offer.

[break][break] The only one out for miles was Leo and his Pokemon, and the latter - well, at least Peanut didn't seem to have much to say abou the manner. Rue, who was usually tucked into one of his pockets, suddenly flew off from the perch she'd once occupied on his shoulder and flew off. "Hey, where you going?" Wasting no time at all, Leo ran after her.

It does not occur to Leo that he was perhaps an inch from near death. It might have occurred to anyone else, specifically people who were had been in the retired Beast's inner circle or at least in a position in Rocket that would allow them close quarters with the man. Maybe the likes of Cillian Quinn or Razz Kingsman would come to mind. Either way, Leo knew neither of these people and in fact, would have probably denied their very existence should it have come to light.

[break][break] He merely winced when the boy pulled a bit too tightly at his hair. "Ow," he says, but doesn't otherwise protest. The pain isn't a concern to him - his most pressing concern is that the other sees how cute thsoe birds are, and his wish comes to fruition when Chu-e Choi knocks the bird nest off the telephone pole, pressing the baby chicks into his chest.

[break][break] It does not occur to Leo that they have effectively destroyed the future of the baby chicks, or that - while necessary for the general population - the act might be considered cruel by others.

[break][break] Instead, he swerves dramatically on his heel. "Aren't they adorable? Glad you got to see them." He winces again as the fingers gripping his hair seem to tighten - or maybe he was imagining it - and then grins. Mostly at the Incineroar, 'cause how could he smile at someone on top of him? "So where to next, oh captain!"

Littleroot was no Olddale Town, and The Horned Ranch certainly had nothing to caroline foster 's farm where he grew up, but it was still pretty good. Plus, Leo wasn't really the kind of person to say no to some extra help, and when he'd been lounging around his mother's house, gangly limbs thrown all over her couch and stuffing empanadas into his mouth, and the neighborhood Rangers came knockin' on the door, asking if Leo could lend an extra hand, it wasn't like he could say no.

[break][break] Plus, the fact that his mother threw a rag in his face and yelled, "Vamos! Vamos! at him as she shoved him out the door certainly seemed to help matters too.

[break][break] However, seeing the way that Peanut raced through the plains of The Horned Ranch was pleasure enough. Since being at college, he couldn't take her off for a run as much as he would like, and even though it didn't have her same friends that they had at the Foster's farm, it was still pretty good. Or at least, Leo thought so, as he munched on a cookie absently and glanced at the flyer in his hand. Though flyer was perhaps putting it broadly — it was a hastily written on napking that his father's old Ranger friend Mateo had written for him. Leo squinted. Uncle Mateo had terrible handwriting.

What were vacations for except for exploring new, undiscovered places? Sure, maybe when people made those brochures, they didn't immediately think about archeologist digs as Hoenn's main tourist destinations. However, that was hardly Artie's fault. As far as he was concerned, that was their fault for not advertising properly.

[break][break] And so what if his travel destination had also put up a few, very bold signs that he ought to watch his step and that trespassers would be persecuted? Those were obviously not meant for him. Those were for civilians. You know, commonfolk, who had to follow the rules and regulations of society.

[break][break] Arthur Finnian Vanderbilt was not one of them.

[break][break] "Kinda reminds you of Motostoke, doesn't it, Roo?" he said, half-paying attention to his phone and half to the small bird perched on his shoulder. Rocks crumbled beneath his shoes as he went down a particularly sharp incline. He threw his hands out to balance himself, and then went back to his phone, tap tap tapping away at it. Probably sending a funny text to one of his sisters. Or he was about to when, his foot broke against a foothold, sending him toppling forward. He would have faceplanted, had not for his Rookidee's quick thinking, grabbing on the collar of his jacket and flapping its wings fiercely.

[break][break] The action, while not broking flight exactly, made him hover a bit in the air. His arms and legs dangling, until it hit solid ground. What a relief! Taking a breath, he patted himself dry of the dust, making sure that his loyal sword was still latched at his side, and then looked up, cerise-colored gaze locking with that of @derrick .

[break][break] His face brightened and he waved. "Hey! You must be my tour guide. What gives, I thought you were gonna meet me at the entrance?"

[break][break] The boy's glossy ID-badge was hung in a lanyard around his neck, falling in the center of his chest, in plain sight. It read, quite clearly, Miguel Smirnov, archeologist.

[break][break] Invasive species? The words cause a crease in his brow, as if he hasn't heard the word before in his life. Which is, you know, not true. He was a college student! 'Course he knew what that word meant.

[break][break] A pout settles cutely onto his features. "But they're cute," he says, as if that wasn't already obvious. This dude must not have seen baby bird pokemon before. Maybe he was just a grade schooler? That must have been it! Leo's eyes light up, suddenly, with an idea.

[break][break] Without a regard for what the other boy must have thought, the 6 foot something man-child leans forward and ducks his head, hopefully right between Chu-e Choi 's legs and lifts him upright into the air. He grabs onto his ankles, just to make sure he doesn't fall over. "Ok," he pipes up. "I'll do what you say, but first, you gotta see them up close. They're so cute, man!"

[break][break] And of course, it does not occur to Leo that he should not be doing this. That the boy in his arms is not only not a child, but also not a person that should be lifted without their approval. That the person he was getting so buddy-buddy with was... perhaps an axe murderer. Well, that was an exaggeration, probably.

Oh shit, was he going to die?

[break][break] These were the thoughts of one particular leo del río as he began is ungodly descent through the sky, gangly limbs at all. It wasn't a dreadfully surprising thought. Leo had climbed up the pole without preamble, without any thought for the risks he was taking. After all, caroline foster had taught him how to climb trees — she hadn't taught him how to worry. Not for risks, or potential fear of death, or anything. It was simply not the Foster way.

[break][break]Rue gave out a squeak of surprise as her trainer suddenly fell from quite the dangerous height, her tiny wings beating frantically in an attempt to catch him. Unfortunately, Leo's body was flying far too quickly for her to be able to catch up — and even if she did, she wouldn't have been able to catch him. He was more than twice her weight!

[break][break] Luckily, the boy's fate was saved by that of a muscular, beefy feline. Chu-e Choi 's Incerorar caught the boy in his arms, and Leo could only blink dazed at the bipedal cat, his glasses - which had somehow not been broken in the crash - sliding down his nose. "Ah." He blinked again, before a smile warmed his face as he was led gently to the ground. "Hey! What's up?"

[break][break] Peanut, who had been terrified only seconds before, could only stare. If she had human hands, she might have face-palmed.

The baby Wingull are adorable — can you blame him?

[break][break] There aren't any pokemon like this on the Foster's farm, at least none that he can remember. He'd seen plenty of baby Fletchling, baby Ducklett... though the white and blue-striped water-types in front of him aren't anything that he'd seen before. Sure, he'd seen them from a distance, but close up is just different. Leo is babbling at them the same way adults babble at babies, handing them scraps of food that are probably not that great for them, when there was a ruckus from below.

[break][break] Ignorant to the college boy, it seems that Leo's actions have drawn somewhat of a crowd - well a crowd of one. Peanut glances sideways at the dark-haired man that approaches, tensing first at the intruder, and then blinking as the other nudges her in a cheerful manner. She snorts at his words, and whinnies softly, as if to say something along the lines of, 'You think?' Whether Leo owns her or she owns Leo is always constantly up for debate.

[break][break] caroline foster would probably bet on the latter.

were taquitos healthy? probably not, but they were yummy.

[break][break] leo tells him that, bottom lip jutting out in a pout. "but they're tasty, " he says, with a huff, but even as he says that, he knows that his friend is right. sometimes his stomach is fine, but also sometimes shoveling garbage into his mouth is not enough trouble for all it's worth — elijah's nagging could sometimes be as bad as mama's, and worst of all, both were usually right.

[break][break] "maybe if i made them, they'd be healthier?" he says, the tone of his words lilting almost like a question. leo is not the best cook, but his mother at least taught him some basics, and using real ingredients at least has to be better than whatever frozen, pre-prepared ingredients than the chain restaurant hungry hawluchas is probably selling. curiously, he looks up at elijah's back, glancing as he sets the two glass jars on what looks like a boiler. "do you know how to cook, 'lijah?"

[break][break] maybe elijah told him before, maybe leo just forgot.

[break][break] his eyes drop back down to the app, clicking out of the hungry hawluchas page, and clicking into something healthier. there's poke bowls, pizza places, other local fastfood chains... leo glances up at elijah, eyes catching on the other's green hair. a laugh, somehow, comes unbidden to his mouth and he presses his knuckle against it. knowing the other, he'd probably want to eat something like salad which is only laughable, given his place of work and his hair color. leo doesn't say it outloud though - he thinks that elijah might bite of a finger - and instead, "so what do you want to eat?" if elijah is gonna be so picky about their food, he might as well choose.

[break][break] leo pets the pokemon in his lap idly as he scrolls through their options, only looking up with surprise as the question that is lobbed towards him." 'course I do!" he says, brow furrowing. why bring that up now? then - all of a sudden - his face brightens. "oh — did you want me to invite them over?"

[break][break] strange, since elijah gardner doesn't seem like the type to enjoy company.

Leo couldn't be entirely sure before, just staring at a familiar brunette head, but now that he was looking angelo vestri straight in the face, his bright blue eyes gazing back at him, he was positive. It was his old college buddy! They'd met over a couple of sporting events before, when the other just suddenly stopped corresponding to his emails. Not that Leo wasn't at fault either - he was really bad at replying to things, since he would read them, respond in his head, and forget about them. ADHD really sucked, sometimes!

[break][break] Happy to see an old friend again, Leo was quick to throw his towel on a nearby bench - his Fletchling was quick to catch it mid-air before it hit the ground, swooping down from the trees to grab and it and place it properly on a nearby rock. She did well to fold it too, managing somehow, before flying back to the sky again. Meanwhile, Leo, completely unaware of all of it, clasped the other's hand in an act of commandrie, his grip firm, before sliding into the hot pool beside his friend.

[break][break] The heat took a bit getting used to and he gripped the rock beneath him for support, but the warmth eventually seemed into his bones, and he looked back at his friend with bright eyes. "It's goin' great! Finals are over, and break is here, so I can do whatever I want." He laughed, leaning back on his elbows against the water's edge. "Must be the same for you, right? How was finals? Couldn't have been worse than mine - Slateport's brutal."

These days, few things brought the Zebstrika the same childhood excitement she felt whenever she was on the foster's farm. Whether it be adulthood or evolution, she felt like she had to take care of leo rather than what should have been the other way around. However, the sight of an old friend had the electric type's face brightening with excitement and she let out a whinny of pleasure as the other nudged her cheeks. She stamped her hooves against the ground and inclining her head a bit, tail swaying behind her. 'Wanna race?' her eyes seemed to say.

[break][break] Meanwhile, inside the Foster's residence, Leo was doing what he always did best -- bothering his friends. caroline foster took his abrupt introduction at ease, like she always did. The boy leaned back with a trademark grin, as she pushed a hand against his chest to support the weight that he'd been leaning on her. "Merry Christmas," he parroted back, before his eyes narrowed playfully at her comment. He huffed. "Well, lots! But not your cooking — definitely not your cooking." He chuckled. "I'm still alive, after all."

[break][break] His mother's face had been priceless coming home to a ruined kitchen, and a near-dead Leo. If there was anything that Mrs. Rio still held a grudge against, it might have been the Foster's daughter's attempt on her poor son's life.

[break][break] "Have you gotten taller?? Oh no, maybe I'm getting smaller."

[break][break] Another laugh burst out of the boy at her words, and if possible, his grin got bigger. "Yeah, you definitely got smaller." His eyes twinkled, his tone teasing, before he abruptly jumped forward and pulled her into another hug, this time squeezing tightly before letting go. "I've missed you!" He pouted. "College isn't the same without you there." Though, he knew, going to college had been his decision. He was his parents' only child. He couldn't let them down, running off to some ranger school without even attempting hitting the books.

[break][break] His stomach rumbled, and he looked at her sheepishly. "Okay, no, I haven't eaten today. 'Cause I just woke up, like an hour ago." The joys of being on school break.
