Littleroot was no Olddale Town, and The Horned Ranch certainly had nothing to caroline foster 's farm where he grew up, but it was still pretty good. Plus, Leo wasn't really the kind of person to say no to some extra help, and when he'd been lounging around his mother's house, gangly limbs thrown all over her couch and stuffing empanadas into his mouth, and the neighborhood Rangers came knockin' on the door, asking if Leo could lend an extra hand, it wasn't like he could say no.

[break][break] Plus, the fact that his mother threw a rag in his face and yelled, "Vamos! Vamos! at him as she shoved him out the door certainly seemed to help matters too.

[break][break] However, seeing the way that Peanut raced through the plains of The Horned Ranch was pleasure enough. Since being at college, he couldn't take her off for a run as much as he would like, and even though it didn't have her same friends that they had at the Foster's farm, it was still pretty good. Or at least, Leo thought so, as he munched on a cookie absently and glanced at the flyer in his hand. Though flyer was perhaps putting it broadly — it was a hastily written on napking that his father's old Ranger friend Mateo had written for him. Leo squinted. Uncle Mateo had terrible handwriting.

[break][break] Invasive species? The words cause a crease in his brow, as if he hasn't heard the word before in his life. Which is, you know, not true. He was a college student! 'Course he knew what that word meant.

[break][break] A pout settles cutely onto his features. "But they're cute," he says, as if that wasn't already obvious. This dude must not have seen baby bird pokemon before. Maybe he was just a grade schooler? That must have been it! Leo's eyes light up, suddenly, with an idea.

[break][break] Without a regard for what the other boy must have thought, the 6 foot something man-child leans forward and ducks his head, hopefully right between Chu-e Choi 's legs and lifts him upright into the air. He grabs onto his ankles, just to make sure he doesn't fall over. "Ok," he pipes up. "I'll do what you say, but first, you gotta see them up close. They're so cute, man!"

[break][break] And of course, it does not occur to Leo that he should not be doing this. That the boy in his arms is not only not a child, but also not a person that should be lifted without their approval. That the person he was getting so buddy-buddy with was... perhaps an axe murderer. Well, that was an exaggeration, probably.

Oh shit, was he going to die?

[break][break] These were the thoughts of one particular leo del río as he began is ungodly descent through the sky, gangly limbs at all. It wasn't a dreadfully surprising thought. Leo had climbed up the pole without preamble, without any thought for the risks he was taking. After all, caroline foster had taught him how to climb trees — she hadn't taught him how to worry. Not for risks, or potential fear of death, or anything. It was simply not the Foster way.

[break][break]Rue gave out a squeak of surprise as her trainer suddenly fell from quite the dangerous height, her tiny wings beating frantically in an attempt to catch him. Unfortunately, Leo's body was flying far too quickly for her to be able to catch up — and even if she did, she wouldn't have been able to catch him. He was more than twice her weight!

[break][break] Luckily, the boy's fate was saved by that of a muscular, beefy feline. Chu-e Choi 's Incerorar caught the boy in his arms, and Leo could only blink dazed at the bipedal cat, his glasses - which had somehow not been broken in the crash - sliding down his nose. "Ah." He blinked again, before a smile warmed his face as he was led gently to the ground. "Hey! What's up?"

[break][break] Peanut, who had been terrified only seconds before, could only stare. If she had human hands, she might have face-palmed.

The baby Wingull are adorable — can you blame him?

[break][break] There aren't any pokemon like this on the Foster's farm, at least none that he can remember. He'd seen plenty of baby Fletchling, baby Ducklett... though the white and blue-striped water-types in front of him aren't anything that he'd seen before. Sure, he'd seen them from a distance, but close up is just different. Leo is babbling at them the same way adults babble at babies, handing them scraps of food that are probably not that great for them, when there was a ruckus from below.

[break][break] Ignorant to the college boy, it seems that Leo's actions have drawn somewhat of a crowd - well a crowd of one. Peanut glances sideways at the dark-haired man that approaches, tensing first at the intruder, and then blinking as the other nudges her in a cheerful manner. She snorts at his words, and whinnies softly, as if to say something along the lines of, 'You think?' Whether Leo owns her or she owns Leo is always constantly up for debate.

[break][break] caroline foster would probably bet on the latter.

[break][break] Peanut's eyes grow wide as Chu-e Choi calls up to Leo, likely to scold him for doing something so dangerous. However, the reason her eyes grow wide isn't that — it is because the sudden sound causes the boy to yelp, and lose his grip, and all of a sudden, Leo's gangly body is cascading through the air and making a very unfortunate descent on top of... Chu-e Choi ?!

[break][break] leo tells him that, bottom lip jutting out in a pout. "but they're tasty, " he says, with a huff, but even as he says that, he knows that his friend is right. sometimes his stomach is fine, but also sometimes shoveling garbage into his mouth is not enough trouble for all it's worth — elijah's nagging could sometimes be as bad as mama's, and worst of all, both were usually right.

[break][break] "maybe if i made them, they'd be healthier?" he says, the tone of his words lilting almost like a question. leo is not the best cook, but his mother at least taught him some basics, and using real ingredients at least has to be better than whatever frozen, pre-prepared ingredients than the chain restaurant hungry hawluchas is probably selling. curiously, he looks up at elijah's back, glancing as he sets the two glass jars on what looks like a boiler. "do you know how to cook, 'lijah?"

[break][break] maybe elijah told him before, maybe leo just forgot.

[break][break] his eyes drop back down to the app, clicking out of the hungry hawluchas page, and clicking into something healthier. there's poke bowls, pizza places, other local fastfood chains... leo glances up at elijah, eyes catching on the other's green hair. a laugh, somehow, comes unbidden to his mouth and he presses his knuckle against it. knowing the other, he'd probably want to eat something like salad which is only laughable, given his place of work and his hair color. leo doesn't say it outloud though - he thinks that elijah might bite of a finger - and instead, "so what do you want to eat?" if elijah is gonna be so picky about their food, he might as well choose.

[break][break] leo pets the pokemon in his lap idly as he scrolls through their options, only looking up with surprise as the question that is lobbed towards him." 'course I do!" he says, brow furrowing. why bring that up now? then - all of a sudden - his face brightens. "oh — did you want me to invite them over?"

[break][break] strange, since elijah gardner doesn't seem like the type to enjoy company.

Leo couldn't be entirely sure before, just staring at a familiar brunette head, but now that he was looking angelo vestri straight in the face, his bright blue eyes gazing back at him, he was positive. It was his old college buddy! They'd met over a couple of sporting events before, when the other just suddenly stopped corresponding to his emails. Not that Leo wasn't at fault either - he was really bad at replying to things, since he would read them, respond in his head, and forget about them. ADHD really sucked, sometimes!

[break][break] Happy to see an old friend again, Leo was quick to throw his towel on a nearby bench - his Fletchling was quick to catch it mid-air before it hit the ground, swooping down from the trees to grab and it and place it properly on a nearby rock. She did well to fold it too, managing somehow, before flying back to the sky again. Meanwhile, Leo, completely unaware of all of it, clasped the other's hand in an act of commandrie, his grip firm, before sliding into the hot pool beside his friend.

[break][break] The heat took a bit getting used to and he gripped the rock beneath him for support, but the warmth eventually seemed into his bones, and he looked back at his friend with bright eyes. "It's goin' great! Finals are over, and break is here, so I can do whatever I want." He laughed, leaning back on his elbows against the water's edge. "Must be the same for you, right? How was finals? Couldn't have been worse than mine - Slateport's brutal."

These days, few things brought the Zebstrika the same childhood excitement she felt whenever she was on the foster's farm. Whether it be adulthood or evolution, she felt like she had to take care of leo rather than what should have been the other way around. However, the sight of an old friend had the electric type's face brightening with excitement and she let out a whinny of pleasure as the other nudged her cheeks. She stamped her hooves against the ground and inclining her head a bit, tail swaying behind her. 'Wanna race?' her eyes seemed to say.

[break][break] Meanwhile, inside the Foster's residence, Leo was doing what he always did best -- bothering his friends. caroline foster took his abrupt introduction at ease, like she always did. The boy leaned back with a trademark grin, as she pushed a hand against his chest to support the weight that he'd been leaning on her. "Merry Christmas," he parroted back, before his eyes narrowed playfully at her comment. He huffed. "Well, lots! But not your cooking — definitely not your cooking." He chuckled. "I'm still alive, after all."

His eyes twinkled, his tone teasing, before he abruptly jumped forward and pulled her into another hug, this time squeezing tightly before letting go. "I've missed you!" He pouted. "College isn't the same without you there." Though, he knew, going to college had been his decision. He was his parents' only child. He couldn't let them down, running off to some ranger school without even attempting hitting the books.

[break][break] His stomach rumbled, and he looked at her sheepishly. "Okay, no, I haven't eaten today. 'Cause I just woke up, like an hour ago." The joys of being on school break.

"Aww, aren't you guys cute, " the tall, six-foot something boy cooed at the nest of baby birds. This - in itself - should not have been surprising, as Leo had spent many an afternoon hanging out with baby pokemon when he'd grown up on caroline foster 's farm. That being said, this particular situation was a bit different. The college boy had his legs wrapped around a telephone pole as he cooed at the birds that cooed happily back at him. The baby Winggull chirped their little wings as Leo fed them scraps of food from a satchel that he had tied to his belt.

[break][break] Down below, his Zebstrika gave a harrumph of displeasure. Though she knew that this was well within the realms of her trainer's ridiculousness, this must have taken the cake. Plus, they were on vacation.

[break][break] In the popular city of Mossdeep, and in the middle of the day, you would have thought Leo would have had better things to do than climb up a telephone pole — how he even managed that was beyond her — and try to make friends with the local wildlife. They were on spring break - Leo was just traveling for fun, and still somehow, managed to get himself caught up in a situation that likely had nothing to do with him. Though, she supposed, she shouldn't have been surprised. This was well within the realm of what it meant to be one of his pokemon.

[break][break] The Zebstrika looked down and gave the Togedemaru beside her a long look, but the mouse pokemon seemed to have more things interesting him than his peculiar trainer. Like, for example, what was this in this McBlaziken bag.. was that an extra fry? He dug himself deeper into the discarded fast food bag, completely ignorant to whatever plight plagued his fellow teammate.

[break][break] Even if Leo fell out of the sky, it was doubtful whether Queso would have noticed.

"Aw, it's gonna be okay!" The Zebstrika whined impatiently as her trainer patted her cheeks affectionately. Since she'd practically been reared by him, Peanut never liked to be absent from his side for long; the only thing she hated more was maybe being constrained by her pokeball. Leo hooked the electric-type into the front of the building by the bike rails, though only loosely. He knew that if she wanted to — or rather needed to — she could easily let herself free. "It's only gonna be a half hour, maybe an hour." The Zebstrika snorted, a puff of air in his face, and he laughed. "You know I'd take you in if I could. You're just too big!"

[break][break] Leo pulled his backpack off of her, unzipping it to let out — first Queso, who had been hiding in his bag, and then a towel. Unlike the Zebstrika, the mouse pokemon easily fit onto his shoulder and the hotsprings had no qualms about letting other pokemon in — provided that they fit the facility's space. The same, of course, went for little Rue who was tucked into his hoodie, chirping lightly. Patting Peanut's side one more time in a goodbye, Leo trotted into the Lavaride Hotsprings.

[break][break] Less than ten minutes later, the gangly boy was stripped down to nothing but his swim trunks and a bath towel hung over a shoulder.

[break][break] Queso was quick to scamper down him beanpole of a body and explore the side of the pool, joining other pokemon that was mingling about. Rue, on the other hand, took quickly to the trees edging the lines of the area, chirping away. Hmm, where should I go? he thought absently, humming lightly under his breath, when his eyes widened and then brightened at the familiar face of angelo vestri .

[break][break] Just as the other boy was leaning his head back, probably absorbed in his own thoughts, Leo popped up right above him with a characteristic, gummy smile. "Hey! Angelo, it's me!" He pointed at his face happily. "Remember me?"

[break][break] the words fill the room with resounding quiet, and leo lets out a resigned huff, pushing his arms forward and pressing his chin against the countertop. leo never grew up with siblings and so, like most only children, always got what he wanted. of course, his parents gave push-and-pull, but they always gave in eventually. they denied him almost nothing — especially when it came to food.

[break][break] meeting elijah gardner , in a way, was a breath of fresh air from all of that. he always said no, always pushed him to make him think about what he really wanted. at least, that's what leo thought about as he listened to the quiet, comforting grind of the mortar and pestle, his gaze growing sleepy and distracted in the silence of the apothecary. there was something comforting about it - the sounds, the resolute way in which elijah commanded attention. it almost felt soothing, like his mother singing a childhood lullaby to him to help him fall asleep as a toddler. the hand of his father's hand on his head, just before he was about to leave for his shift.

[break][break] there was something secure in elijah, something that leo sorely lacked in his life, and perhaps that was why their relationship lasted as long as it did.

[break][break] leo sits up when elijah speaks again, not even bothering to turn his back to him. (leo could pout at this, too, but doesn't.) the lure of ordering in has snagged him — it may not be as good as getting elijah to go outside and see sunlight, but it is still good. he smiles blithely at the somewhere between the blades of elijah's shoulders, only blinking and frowning when he pats his pants pockets to realize that he no longer has his phone on him. "uh..." worry creases his brows for a second, before there is a small yelp at his side.

[break][break] it is yams, his newly caught - well adopted - yamper, slobbering around a distinctly square-looking device. "oh! yeah!" he says, in response to elijah, leaning over to grab the small pup and set him in his lab. with the corner of a sleeve, he wipes his device and then begins to open through his pidgeyeats app, scrolling through it. although he felt absolutely ravenous moments ago, the sudden possibility of so many options has him stilled.

[break][break] the yamper presses his nose against leo's neck — it's cold but leo pays no mind, before speaking to elijah, only half distractedly. "is there anything you want to eat?" he trails off. "taquitos sound good..." the accent as he says the word is comfortable and easy, just like his relationship with elijah. yams' tail makes a steady thump thump sound against his knee.

The civilian woman is flustered when she is addressed by the councilman, but Leo isn't. Not even when his offer for a ride is turned down. The college boy is already galloping away by the time Orion Lykos is on his Zebstrika, and it is only a minute later that he is sliding down onto the soft grass looking around at the garden before them.

[break][break] Privately, Peanut is glad for the counsilman's offer. Though she is sure that she would have no trouble carrying them both, there is no need to burden her more than necessary. Not that Leo has ever made such an offer - his faith in her is unrivaled, and constant. And frankly, sometimes, a little bit exhausting.

[break][break] If she had the words, she would have thanked the counsilman herself. Instead, as Leo slips off her, she trots over to a patch of grass and sniffs at it briefly before nibbling. Whatever the humans have to do here is not up to her, and she's already done her work. It's now time for Leo to pull his own weight.

[break][break] Well, not before the tall, lanky boy is making an "o" face at Orion for the way that he magically lifts the wooden logs. For a moment, it almost seems as if he does it but then Leo realizes that it's his pokemon who does. Oh. Yeah, that would definitely make more sense.

[break][break] At the conversation, Leo grins wide. "I'm from Olddale! We have a garden there too, though nothing as big as this." His eyes are wide behind his glasses as he looks back to the garden -- though barren, Leo can see the potential that practically leaks from it. "Come on!" he says, attempting to grab Orion's hand and lead them towards the center of the plaza. Leo is quick to drop down to his knees and shove his hands into the dirt, creating a small hole with his fingers and then place a pretty sapling inside. "I hung around there all the time after school. I don't know if I have a green thumb, but I do know it was super fun. 'Course, it's a community garden, so it's not like I was the only one. Everyone was glad to help."
