Lex found herself thankful that the girl wasn’t completely useless. Summer was quick to spring into action, two pokemon at the ready to defend them from the monster that lurked inside of the distortion. Lex silently prayed to whatever deity was listening. Hopefully, this was temporary as she promised. The last thing she needed was to be stuck in a strange world. Memories flashed back to the Tree of Life. That was enough time and space travel for her.

A LYCANROC lunged from the shadows, bearing its fangs and claws. Lex’s own H!Lycanroc turned its ghostly head, a snarl escaping from its curled lips. Nova too lunged, tackling it’s counterpart to ground. The two engaged is a flurry of teeth, claws, and dark mist.

“Watch out!” she pointed behind Summer, another H!Zoroark lunged, “It must have spawned a whole pack,” she growled between clenched teeth. Lex snatched another pokeball from her side, hesitant to release another pokemon into the fray after what happened to Nova the last time they were caught in one of these.

A part of her hopes for an answer, anything Gavin can give her. Instead, the question still remains unanswered. Worst of all, Killian Decker doesn’t even seem to know what it wants. It’s disturbing, and rattles her to the core.

In response, her shoulders shrug, “I don’t know, it just . . . lunged,” after another moment of consideration, she continues, “It was right after it . . . happened,” Deoxys was likely terrified, but that doesn’t cross the thief’s mind. All she sees is a monster infecting Killian.

With a curious look, she hesitates before asking her next question. Is she getting too personal?

“How did Lugia change you? Did you ever understand it wants?”

Deserve, or desire? Perhaps not all ghost types deserved their fate. It’s quite possible some of them chose not to ‘move on’. Unfinished business, spite, regret, the opportunity for immortality – everyone’s desires shift throughout life. When faced with death, is anyone truly ready? If given the choice, many would likely choose to live on, terrified of what an afterlife may hold for them.

At Nina’s comment, Lex simply shrugged, also taking a look around the dark, dusty foyer, “Definitely needs some work,” she agreed, but she could see the potential there.

Lex met Nina’s surprised look with a rather stoic expression, the hint of a frown tugged at one of the corners of her cherry lips, “Of course you,” dumb question.

“Looking for them it is,” the frown turned into a small grin, also hinting at her shared desire to search for them. A wave of her hand pushes the Misdreavus forward, the ghost disappearing into the dark mist.

“Have you ever traveled through the phantom plane” strange small talk to start with as she stepped forward, leading them deeper into the mansion. A soft, deep groan can heard in the distance.

Old floorboards? Or had they awakened something from its slumber?

It had grabbed her head – the entirety of it. It felt like nothing’s she’s ever experienced before. The pressure surrounding her was terrifying. Not to mention, it came from him, Killian. An alien thing snaking its way out of his own flesh. It’s the same skin that held her for years, the same man that asked her to spend the rest of their lives together. All of that was gone in an instant. He was no longer just Killian, he’s no longer hers.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” physically. Mentally, not so much. He’s gone, and that’s not fine.

Her left thumb rubs idly at where there use to be a ring. Instead, it lies hidden on a chain around her neck.

“What do you think it wants from him?”

Darkness descended and with each step towards the light, the feeling of hope disappeared. Summer confirmed Lex’s fears: They’re trapped. Her fingers uncurled from around the woman’s wrist and instead of escape, she turned her focus onto survival.

“If this is anything like last time, it’s only temporary,” her voice was barely audible, lost beneath the thunderous winds that whipped around them. As her amber eyes scanned the unfamiliar new plane of reality they found themselves in, she hoped what she said was true.

A brief flash of light emitted from the sphere in her hand. From it, a strange, ghostly Zoroark appears. The last distortion she was trapped in, Nova died and came back to life as this version of herself. As far as Lex could tell, nothing had changed too much except for the fact that she was now part ghost. She wasn’t willing to risk any of her other pokemon in this chaos.

The shrieks and snarls of wild pokemon erupted around them though none made their move, “Be ready, there are violent pokemon in these things,” her warning was loud so Summer could hear it above the whistle of the turbulent wind.

Moving on. Was that something that happened when you left this earth? Or did you simply cease to exist? It’s something’s considered time and time again as she worked with more and more ghost-types. Sometimes, she wasn’t even convinced they had a life before their spectral existence. That, or they didn’t quite remember why they were still here. If she’s learned anything from recent events, it’s that energy does seem to shift. It’s not created or destroyed, only transferred. Wasn’t that some sort of scientific principle? A question for someone else, not her.

“I think sometimes they don’t have a choice and their energy is pulled into becoming what they are,” sometimes, Lex also felt that they were more than just an individual, but an accumulation of energies formed into one being, like a complex symbiotic relationship, “I don’t think we’ll ever quite figure it out,” Lex shrugged and moved on.

Enough philosophy, time for work.

A wave of Lex’s hand summoned Morgana from the phantom plane. The Misdreavus materialized from a dark mist, taking form beside the red head as she walked towards the mansion. Much like the iron gate, the front door creaked eerily as the Beast pushed it open with one hand. Daylight from the outside flooded the dusty foyer and it all seemed quiet, “Would you rather flush them out or search for them?” each tactic had its pros and cons. Or perhaps the woman had another idea. Lex’s gazed moved towards Nina, looking at her expectantly.

From behind the two women, a masculine voice cuts off their conversation, not that it was much of a conversation to begin with. The redhead tilts her head back, letting amber eyes flick over to fixate on Kenjiro Yamada. She’s doesn’t recognize him. Not surprising, she barely recognized anyone here which is rather sad to admit. oscar clayton is really the only one she has worked with previously and that ended up pretty shitty for her. Hard to imagine why she wasn’t jumping at the bit to team up with another Beast.

“I’m lex,” she states simply, before craning her head to turn an ear towards priam conrad’s rather enthusiastic description of New Years 2020. It wasn’t long after that Lex came to Hoenn. She has vaguely heard about the events of that night. Of course, she dove a bit deeper when she heard about the appearance of a certain ghost-type she found intriguing.

“It sounds about right,” she responds to chryssa glasgow. She watched the other disperse, the Rocket NPC’s not wandering too far but the true participants heading towards the Lighthouse, “If we need to come back together, she can Teleport to reunite us,” Lex points a thumb back towards the ghostly Gardevoir clinging close to her back. In response, the Shadow Pokemon peels back her thin lips, revealing rows of rather sharp, grotesque teeth.

As many walk towards the Lighthouse, Lex’s attention is pulled towards a large stage. Although the Rocket participants are paired up, at the end of the day, they all still needed to work together in some capacity, “We’ll head towards the stage, stay on your toes,” no one seemed to care about that area, may as well be there if anything happens.

A loud laugh of a group of Rocket NPCS rings out as clattering of wood falls at the destruction of a stall. Annoyance creeps into her already rather tense features. A hand reaches out towards the culprit, Shadow Gardevoir’s arms mirrors hers. PSYCHIC consumes the unsuspecting Grunt. The invisible force pulls him towards them, suspending him just inches about the ground in front of her, “Don’t be an idiot, prepare yourselves,” The psychic glow vanishes, but not before pushing him back towards his group aggressively enough to make him topple onto the ground.

The long, spidery fingers of the ghost curl around Lex’s shoulder and together the pair disappear in a dark mist, traveling the spectral plane towards the stage with PHANTOM FORCE.

Another small job to fend off the storm. Just another distraction. Unfortunately, that’s all this was to her. The woman she’d been assigned with mattered little, she barely knew her name. Spring? Summer? One of the two. It was a season.

For being quite distraught, Lex seemed to be holding it together rather well during her time at work. At home . . . she’d rather not be home. Unlike Summer, she was happy to drag this mission on as long as possible before she was forced to stop for the day. Maybe she would sleep on the submarine tonight, there had to be plenty of empty dorms now that Sootopolis promised more comforting quarters.

Summer’s voice tore her away from her thoughts. Amber hues jolted up to look around them. Instinctively she tensed, a hand hovering over a pokeball that hugged her belt. It didn’t take long for Lex to recognize what was happening – she’d seen this once before.

The stoic face twisted into something dark, angry, “Fuck, I’ve seen this before” she cursed, spinning on her heels to survey the visible horizon. It came on quickly, darkening the sky and stirring up winds strong enough to drown out her words, “This way,” she frantically grabs for Summer’s wrist, tugging her in a direction that looks vague lighter than the dark blue and purple sky that surrounds them.

There it is again, that funny weight. It bears down on them, the invisible pressure of time and space itself being torn apart.

Killian’s honesty was refreshing, even if that only lasted a moment. It was good to know he was cautious and didn’t simply accept the new resident without having hesitations. Still, it seemed dangerous to have a pokemon living inside you. She prayed to every god she could think of that he would seek help, make sure this wasn’t killing him.

With that thought, her chest shuddered, sending another wave of slow tears to roll down her cheeks. The thought of losing him was too much. She’d rather die. That discomfort alone is enough to coax her to lower her legs, accepting Loveless onto her lap in an attempt to dispel the dark thoughts. Lex holds her close, like a child holding their teddy bear. She’s never felt more vulnerable in her life. So helpless. Kato had always been a looming threat on Killian’s life, but he’s been just that; abstract, in a sense.

Now, there was a tangible, real threat to his safety. Lex would do anything, anything, to keep him with her, keep him safe. But even now, with all the power she’s accumulated, she’s helpless. And for a moment, she thought it couldn’t get any worse.

Then it did.

“Leave?!” she repeated the word whimsically, as if it was a dream. Was this a dream? This couldn’t be real. But it was. As real as the fur beneath her fingertips and the ache in her chest that only meant one thing.

’I’m losing him already,’ the thought slipped in without much effort. It’s what she feared the most from all of this. A logic mind would understand, but Lex’s was clouded with an overwhelming storm of emotions. It made it nearly impossible to know what she wanted him to do, what she should do. He said not forever but it didn’t quite register. All she saw was loneliness. If he died, she would be alone. Even if he didn’t, a part of her would always be alone. It would always be there, stealing half of him for itself. Half was better than none. What if he chose to give all of himself to it? She couldn’t imagine Deoxys wanting to share.

Paralyzed, she simply stared at him, clearly running through the countless ways this could all end, spiraling deeper. None of the ways this ended would be good.

With a sudden sense of urgency, she sprang forward, forcing Loveless to leap off her lap. She crawled towards him, amber hues blurred with tears as they bled from her eyes, “Killian, don’t leave me alone,” she stopped, just out of arm’s reach, still hesitant, but clearly desperate.

After the events of the Tree of Life little concerned her, perhaps to a reckless degree. Working kept her busy which kept the darker thoughts away. What was even more effective than working, was fighting. At least with that there was a reasonable outlet to vent her frustrations. Beating up on some Rocket didn’t seem like something a Beast would do. With the name came power, yes, but it didn’t give free reign to toss around grunts.

Amber eyes moved to glance at Nina once she posed her question. They were scaling the last part of the hill, passing through the entrance gate of the Mansion’s grounds. It was a long driveway leading towards the front door.

“Ghosts? she repeated with a small smile, clearly she thought fondly of them. Instead of admitting it, she shrugged her shoulders, “I think they’re fascinating . . . misunderstood by many,” And with that came fear, which is likely why many people feared them for no particular reason.

As they approached the stone steps, Lex stopped, turning to ask Nina the same question. May as well know before they started their little exorcism, “Do you fear ghosts?”
