[attr="class","sunshine"]The smug, self-satisfied flash of teeth Amalia shoots at Silph is unmistakable as anything else. She feels like the Purrloin that got the cream all over.

She crosses her arms over her chest before leaning back into her plush passenger seat. Eyes on the purple horizon.

The fingers of her right hand drum out an easy, peppy rhythm on her left bicep. 1-and-a-2, 1-and-a-2, 1-and-a-2.

"Oh there is so much I need from you, Mr. Silph," she says with a voice dripping in anticipation, "but as far as the project at hand is concerned . . . Money or the materials I'd buy with it will do. I've got some special radios and cameras on loan from that kind Kantonian professor I mentioned earlier, but they're outdated. The favors he owes me were enough to secure his help but not to get my hands on the newer models he's developed and purchased since our time working together."

She looks back at Silph. Smirk subdued enough that her teeth no longer bare themselves quite so ostentatiously.

"Once I've proven myself through this, though, I will be coming back to ask for quite a bit more."

things to work out [duo wild]
POSTED ON Mar 24, 2021 2:36:15 GMT

[attr="class","spiral"]It's rare that Amalia does any work during daytime hours. Mostly because so much of her work requires night to have fallen to actually get done; but also because she absolutely despises being up early on its own. Much less being up relatively early and taking part in any kind of labor.

Alas, that's what's required of her today.

The other night an order she'd made finally came in. Materials, equipment, to help her with her studies. Specifically high quality cameras, some special radios, and some god-awful, uncomfortable portable furnishings to place them on. A tarp she can throw over them when she's not there.

Getting the furnishings up to a relatively flat portion of Meteor Falls's heights was simple enough, but the machinery is less so. It's delicate and infinitely more important. And on top of that she's getting fucking tired. She's a scientist not some kind of athelete -- all this hiking and lifting is killing her.

"Pleidas, stop clinging!" she snaps at her Cleffa who lets go of her pantleg with a frown, "I'm sorry, baby, but it's hard enough moving everything without you pulling at my leg. Canopus! PSYCHIC please, lovely."

She calls to her Lunatone, who by all accounts is no more excited to be working in the daylight than her. They hover lazily over to a camera and a moment later pink energy surrounds it and lifts it gingerly. Nearby their sibling Antares, Amalia's Solrock, spins about happily.

"Antares dear, stay out of our way, please!" she shouts, barely managing to keep some sweetness in her voice as she struggles to lift one of the hefty radios.

can't fall asleep [solo wild]
POSTED ON Mar 24, 2021 2:20:50 GMT

[attr="class","spiral"]The night is far from young as Amalia sits at her makeshift desk; listening to a mix of mechanical beeps, night time sounds, and the clicking of her own fingers against the keys of her laptop.

"Both Staryu and Starmie, henceforth referred to as Rigel and Centauri, have displayed a marked increase in energy since the move to Meteor Falls," she speaks aloud to a nearby recorder, not taking a pause in her typing as she does so, "Their transmissions, if I am allowed to editorialize slightly, seem urgent. Perhaps eager?"

As she continues to speak she stares ahead. A few feet away stand the pokemon in question. Both Rigel and Centauri face their gems towards the sky, and aside from the occasional twitch are statue still. And yet the gems themselves strobe rapidly between dead nothing and bright, bright red.

The machine recording their, quite frankly nonsense, radio waves show significant activity.

"Both the patterns their gems are repeating and the signals they are sending are new and so far difficult to decipher. They do not match those recorded in the species in other regions, at other locations; and given that my only other exposure to them was at the Giant Chasm where they were exceedingly reticent and refused to transmit anything at all . . . I am at a bit of a loss."

[attr="class","spiral"]Amalia nods in response to the other woman's question.

"Yes, phenomena," she says with a smirk and curious eyes. The stranger's interest is picked up on easily enough. The way her postures shifts. Amalia has watched many a scientist affect casual interest when a tasty topic saunters by.

"Meteor Falls is one of only a few places in the world where extraterrestrial pokemon have appeared naturally," Amalia continues, turning her gaze back to stars again, "Solrock and Lunatone landed here within the last few decades. It makes it a location of great interest to me. All the greater for its more recent involvement with invaders from beyond the stars."

The latter part of her statement is hardly as compelling as the first. The aliens that invaded Hoenn struck all kinds of places, but unlike other locations with clear targets Meteor Falls is just . . . A place. At least until you dig for stories about the conflict here.

A meteor, shattered, its remains being researched even as they speak by League officials.

[attr="class","sunshine"]Well, that's unfortunate. Amalia wasn't positive the optimistic sell would work, but she certainly didn't think it would fail so spectacularly. Though in hindsight it's not so surprising. A company like Silph wouldn't rise like they have if they put their faith in every passing, dreaming scientist.

"Fair enough, Mr. Silph," she replies pleasantly, "These are cynical times."

The caution on Ultra Space research is a bit of a, for lack of a better term, bummer. That was quite a promising field of study for her. Maybe if she explores options independently . . . maybe if she moves away from fickle machinery . . . Either way it's a conversation for a different day. Without anything definite she's sure Silph will rebuff these thoughts as easily as the last.

"Ultra Space is off limits, noted," she says with a smile and a nod. A hand rises to her chin to stroke absent-mindedly at the smooth skin there. A little bit of makeup rubs off on the tips of her fingers but she can't work up the energy to care. What can she promise to a Silph that would interest them . . .

Well, it's a bit mundane, but maybe mundane is where they need to start.

"I studied Starmie and Staryu in grad school, part of a select few chosen by a visiting Kantonian professor," she starts, "As I've already mentioned that particular line is known for sending messages into space. In the past it's been a struggle to decipher them. As I've also mentioned, who they're trying to reach and why is unknown."

Amalia doesn't look at Silph as she speaks, doesn't really look anywhere. Her eyes are trained on the windshield and the traffic outside, but her attention is inward. On the new pitch she's trying to throw together.

"But, since my move to Hoenn I've been working with a few in my own possession. Meteor Falls has . . . changed the behavior of some pokemon I brought from abroad with origins not of this world," she continues, "In particular my Staryu and Starmie have been transmitting slightly different, much more dense signals. They seem very eager to get in touch with whoever they're calling for."

Amalia finally looks at Silph, eyes intense.

"My background in the study of the species lends me a special insight into how to read and analyze these signals. A task I'm already undertaking. With access to Silph resources I could do that work faster. More efficiently. I won't spin you empty promises of what we might get from understanding their midnight messages; but maybe you can see the potential opportunities in being the first to do so?"

[attr="class","sunshine"]Amalia does a lazy once-over of the car's interior as she buckles herself in. It's exactly what she'd expect from someone of Silph's stature. Clean, sleek, apparently automated as they start moving without any input from the "driver". It's a bit excessive. But who is she to judge? She's a bit excessive herself.

"I haven't been doing much but chasing when it comes to you, Mr. Silph, why would I stop now?" She replies, turning smiling eyes from inspecting the car to inspecting the man's face. Not a lot to see there, at least not much new. Maybe a bit less irritation? Though that could just be her own wishful thinking.

As much as annoyance is required in this kind of business, it's not like Amalia delights in it. Things would go smoothest with as little of it as possible.

"Mmm, Silph specializes in pokemon research. At least as much as it specializes in anything, yes?" She leads, "I happen to specialize in the same. Though in a slightly different field. I'm not so interested in technology and manufacturing related to pokemon, I'm interested in their origins. Or at least the origins of the newer and odder ones."

"Solrock, Lunatone, the Elgyem line. Arrived suddenly from space in the lifetimes of our parents. Where from? The Staryu line sends radio signals to space almost every night. Why? Who are they trying to reach?" As she speaks she gestures vaguely with one hand, furrows her brow and frowns in a theatrical show of confusion, "The invasion you've dealt with recently had an aggressive party whose origins were perhaps less mysterious, but with a bit of knowledge of their technology and the resources to experiment on my own . . . I am confident I could find some way to replicate their ability to reach through space."

"Confident" is probably a strong word. No need to cop to that right now, though.

"If I could do that, maybe I could then get to the bottom of all these burning questions of mine," she says, "and of course any spoils involved. Information, access, technology, pokemon -- well I would just have to share them with the people who helped me get there wouldn't I?"

[attr="class","spiral"]A dark curtain slowly falls over everything as the afternoon sky gives way to night. The oranges and reds of the sunset are overtaken bit by bit by purple and a blue so dark it can easily be mistaken for black. Amalia never gets sick of watching it. Is never less entranced than the last time.

It almost distracts her from the question asked of her.

"Ah," she snaps back into the moment, almost like an actor caught out of character. Her posture straightens ever so slightly, the open wonder on her face is reigned into a more tempered joy, and her previously forgotten cigarette finds its way back to her mouth.

Amalia takes a long drag from it. Centers herself.

"I suppose," she replies on an exhale, "I won't be able to keep myself from stargazing for at least a short while, but it's not the main reason I was so eager to come out here, no."

Finally her eyes leave the sky to look at the other woman.

"I am quite interested in the phenomena associated with this location. The old and the more recent," she continues, "I don't expect to go cracking their origins in a single night, but I am hoping to get the lay of the land and maybe see if there are any obvious places to start."

[attr="class","sunshine"]Amalia's laugh is all air, no sound, in the face of his bluntness. It's hard to tell if he's trying to chase her off initially. If it's meant to be a dismissal. If it is it's woefully ineffectual.

She wasn't lying, she loves the honesty.

Thankfully, Silph seems willing to let her play audience to it for a bit longer. Her sharp smile turns self-satisfied at his invite. She takes an easy, casual step out of the man's space, his path, before following after him to his car.

"I would hate to hold you up," she replies as they reach the vehicle. Her free hand reaches down to take hold of the passenger door handle while the other lifts her cigarette to her lips. She takes one last, long drag from it before dropping it to the ground and stamping it out with the toe of her left heel.

The smoke is released on an exhale through her nose before she opens the door and slips inside.

[attr="class","spiral"]Cleffa in one arm, cigarette held tenderly between fingers on the opposite hand, Amalia raises a single curious eyebrow at the other woman's response. There's no time to question it, though. The Gardevoir lays a gentle hand on her (near where Pleidas sleeps soundly) and the world shifts.

TELEPORTING is a novel experience. The way the world blurs, not like you're moving too quickly but like reality itself is warping into itself around you. The odd sensation that accompanies your body slipping somewhere else. Not quite the plane it usually inhabits, not quite a different one. Just somewhere else.

The fact that her cigarette is still lit when they arrive at their destination. That Pleidas seems unbothered by their movement. Doesn't even stir.

"I've always wondered how that works," she notes idly, placing her cigarette to her lips. Suddenly removes it without inhaling.

"Oh this place is lovely," she breathes, eyes suddenly wide, "and just at sundown. I wonder what stars we'll see first . . ."

Like a child she stares up at the sky with that wide smile from earlier plastered onto her face. Her cheeks dimpling and her eyes crinkling at the corners.

[attr="class","spiral"]"Mmm," Amalia hums affirmatively at the echo of the location's name.

The response from the woman is promising. Amalia flicks the already drooping, burnt edge of her cigarette towards the ground while the other woman takes a moment to stare at her Gardevoir.

It's weird! But spend enough time in academia, especially her eccentric corner of the place, and weird struggles to do more than amuse.

Amalia properly smiles when the woman looks back and offers to take her to Meteor Falls. For just a moment all her teeth are on display, as her excitement peaks, before vanishing behind the more modest smirk from earlier. Her eyes crinkle as she speaks around it.

"I would greatly appreciate it if you would," she says, "and I would be more than happy to explain my 'draw' to the place while we're en route."

After she says this she reaches up with one hand, the one not occupied with a burning carcinogen stick, to pluck Pleidas from her head. The Cleffa had long since started to sag into her hair. Is still lightly snoozing as Amalia makes to cradle her in her free arm.

[attr="class","sunshine"]It's unfortunate, but the mood of the person she's looking for is always a casualty when Amalia does this. The Kantonian professor had all but jumped out of his skin. Cursing and flailing first in general, and then quite pointedly at her.

Their conversation afterwards had been tense; and the professor had been a sweating mess. But she had got a conversation, and going forward he always responded promptly to her emails -- if only to avoid another scare.

So, when Fernando Silph looks at her with poorly veiled irritation. Seems a bit short with her. Well, Amalia doesn't let it slow her down. In fact his response is so much better than expected she barrels onward without missing a beat.

"I do so love an honest man," she says, taking another step into Fernando's path so that she is now a proper wall between him and wherever he was going.

"My name is Dr. Amalia Samson, Mr. Silph," she says, her expression and tone polite; but extending a very bold hand to shake as she introduces herself, "and as I've been telling your no doubt countless secretaries for about half a month now, I would very much like to hear what you know about those curious wormholes that Hoenn's so famous for lately."

[attr="class","spiral"]"Such a gentleman." She replies teasingly, "I'm a fine gentlewoman myself, though, so I'll still let you pick my brain. Free of charge."

When Jabami kneels down Pleidas finds herself in a predicament. Running feels most natural, but clinging to Amalia makes her feel better! So she kind of straddles the line of both. Holds tighter to Amalia's pants while leaning as far away from Jabami as her short arms will allow her.

"Oh, baby . . . Pleidas, he's really not that frightening," she tuts gently before returning her attention to the professor, "She does, feel quite at home that is. As do my other partners for the evening. They've all been quite distracted."

Amalia answers for the Cleffa and begins addressing Jabami's other inquiry all at once.

"Nothing unusual has happened, not in any notable sense of the word. Slightly more energy and a greater tendency to run off on her own when she's not hiding so ineffectively from strangers," she continues before looking off deeper into the falls.

"Perhaps we can continue this while walking?" she asks politely.

[attr="class","sunshine"]It's not uncommon for Amalia, this figurative banging of her head against a wall. Sending an email a day for a couple weeks, calling several times a day when they go unanswered. Trying desperately to get an ounce of attention so she can do her fucking job. Not uncommon at all.

Within academia, studying the field she does, in the body she has . . . being brushed off has happened so often she doesn't even take it personally anymore.

Still, it's been a while since she's found herself in this position. Standing outside a building she knows the person she's looking for is in. Leaning against a wall and intermittently looking at the door, her watch, her phone, her watch, the door.

Waiting.

When was the last time she went so far as to corner someone like this? Grad school, maybe? Yeah that was it. That visiting professor from Kanto who'd been studying the signals of the Staryu line.

She smirks to herself at the memory. Takes a long inhale that half-burns her cigarette in one pull before flicking off the ash in the direction of her heels.

It's timely, that Mr. Silph makes his appearance at that moment.

The words from all those years ago are on the tip of her tongue when she steps forward to cut off the path he's making away from League HQ. She doesn't throw her whole body in front of him, just enough that he'd have to really shoulder past her to get by.

"Why Mr. Silph, have you been screening my calls?"

As she asks the question she peeks up at the man from under her bangs (and how rare is that, to find a person who so outstrips her even in heels. How frustrating). There's still a grin on her lips, but her eyes are sharp. Almost dangerously so.
