his answer comes after a moment of thought, "i would.

"i never tormented him but i'll admit i alienated him and turned people against him. it was easy to when that was what people wanted to believe in the first place."

he never imagined himself stepping into KING WAYLAND's shoes but here he is, alienated from his allies and the region he has fought so hard for despite it not being his home.

"but i won't admit to being responsible for everything he's done since then. his betrayal was his choice and his alone."

hypocritically, the same can be said of matias and groudon.

but they have asked him. annalise henderson has asked him, paxton concordas and ollie morales have asked him, and he's certain if he were to reach out to them now, they'd back him with the same faith and confidence they had once showed him.

he doesn't want to use any of them as a bargaining chip, however, because they deserve better. this other chip doesn't.

deep down, hidden underneath the bravado and certainty he presents is guilt layered so thin that it could almost dissipate should he allow it. it would be so easy to; it would not even exist should he still be the man he was when he first met her.

finding no response to her question, he lets it pass, not wanting to linger on the thought of who had he been if not himself. the time for self-reflection is later, when he's back at the ranch, alone with nothing else but his thoughts.

he shifts closer, propping up on an elbow to allow himself a better look at her. tentatively, he reaches out for her knowing she would most likely burn him.

it's worth it, he decides.

"i didn't forget you in the border, i didn't forget you earlier at the restaurant, and i didn't forget you even as i lost myself at chimney. if that's not enough, then what is?"
