the rest of his laugh is strangled out of him, leaving more as strained chuckles as he tugs at the vines around his neck. his fingers dig into the thorns, red oozing against murky green.

"you sound like you're trying to convince yourself."

his index and middle finger slip between the skin of his neck and the vine, able to alleviate enough pressure to keep him breathing.

"be honest with yourself, elisa. i know you're just afraid."

of kyle, of matias, of the consequences that will come for her, and of her past she fought so hard to bury.

it's different to be told pieces of a life once lived than to remember it altogether. it loses its meaning — the heart of what makes those pieces more than that. he knows that no matter how much he may long for kyle to remember, there would be no bringing back that life.

perhaps that life never existed in the first place, as kyle immediately mentioned the moment they returned to hoenn.

he isn't sure what he'd do either if he was in the commissioner's shoes. not that he'd ever be there, though. there's be far too much outcry both internally and externally.

"i thought about retiring."

thought, not think, because that idea, while pleasant in theory, would be horrendous in practice because matias silph is not a man who simply sits around and does nothing. he is a man of action, addicted to the thrill of the fight because he has known nothing else.

"but i'm not sure. my time with the league may come to an end but i don't think i'll ever stop fighting. might just be fighting from behind bars, if that's what they decide."
