40 encounter a ZEKROM that seems to have been intentionally let loose into the realm; however, it has decided that this realm has LOST ITS RIGHTEOUSNESS and in doing so, has decided to annihilate it. battle the ZEKROM to prevent it from annihilating you and the realm temporarily.

[break][break]and while she worries, matias laughs and squeezes her hand, unaffected by the threat looming ahead of them. a solar beam parts the darkened world, breaking against the electric-type's body. it turns. it perceives.[break][break]"this is actually so insane," she reminds him, vision obscured by the broad of his back. she leans sideways to look past him, but she wishes she didn't. what he says doesn't make much sense but those are the words that come to mind as he watches a fusion bolt crackle their way.[break][break]

they dip in the air, descending and ascending as quickly as spikes on a chart. feeling slightly disoriented, he calls out:[break][break]

because they don't stand a chance if his charizard's stuck carrying them. it needs the freedom to move and to fight.[break][break]

as another fusion bolt is charged, butterfree lets loose a bioluminescent bolt that draws its attention.[break][break]

her heart rises into her throat, then plummets into her stomach. it follows the sickening flight path his charizard takes to avoid the zekrom's attacks. she pulls one of her hands free instinctively, drawing the back of it to her mouth as she grapples with nausea. swallowing thickly, she replies: "that's my flier."[break][break]matias will just have to forgive her for not bringing more flying pokemon to a world plagued by low-lying lightning storms. she had only ever planned to spend her time on the ground, far away from this zekrom's righteous fury. [break][break]the fusion bolt is charged, then loosed in furious reply to the butterfree's attacks. his charizard lurches and her hand slips across his stomach as she's thrown from its back.

used to charizard's jagged movement, matias knows when and how to hold on, the pair synergizing well from their many years fighting together. annalise henderson is not as trained.[break][break]

by the grace of the gods, he feels her hand slipping across his stomach. if he hadn't, she'd be dead, and this story would be over.[break][break]

cheating the physics of the world, charizard's substitute activates to flash it directly below annalise henderson to catch her. that leaves matias plummeting which he seems not to mind.[break][break]

this is the second time zekrom has tried to annihilate her and, coincidentally, the second time she has met open air because of it. her roaring moon had been there the first time after she and june sleigh had absconded from that megalopolan ship, only this time the dragon is too preoccupied to have even an inkling of care for its trainer. [break][break]she reaches down, but her back meets leathery scales before she can unclip a contingency plan. she rights herself, realizes she's on matias' charizard with no matias, and feels her heart leap into her throat.[break][break]"ash! help him!"

what catches the elite four is a large and bulbous dragonite, its tummy rolls rippling in the wind. despite its frame, it quickly rises to join annalise henderson, making it look almost effortless.[break][break]

this time, annalise holds onto the charizard as it dips down to rescue its trainer, but the attempt is prevented by a fusion bolt that forces them to level out. panic is a knot in her throat, knowing matias is in a freefall through the low-hanging clouds. because of her. and her only flier — the only pokemon that could help him — has its jaws locked around zekrom's arm, scraping its scales with a dragon claw.[break][break]before she succumbs to the fear running through her, matias reappears atop a dragonite, looking like every part of his self-rescue had been easily orchestrated. she blinks at him like she can't believe he's really there, then her eyes soften apologetically. [break][break]"i will!" [break][break]the clouds rumble overhead, sending new worries through her like a static shock. [break][break]"shouldn't we land or something? it's dangerous up here!"

she can't deny the pang of relief she feels when matias calls the whole expedition off. from her belt, she takes her roaring moon's poke ball and holds it out to recall it. the dragon readjusts its bite on zekrom's arm, but it's swallowed up by red light before it can exact its misplaced revenge on the legendary pokemon. [break][break]they head back. once they land, annalise pats ash gratefully, then slides off its back. compared to fighting zekrom, the trek back to the rift should be simple, but she accidentally kicks a buried celesteela (and catches it before it turns into another headache scenario for them) and then thoughtlessly brushes against a cord just as matias did on their first expedition out here.
