he pauses only to make himself comfortable in the room.[break][break]

"in return for the information, i'll do whatever task it is you ask of me."[break][break]

truth be told, he wanted to control death as much as possible. or learn of it. maybe befriend it enough to persuade it to leave his loved ones alone. silly as it was, he was willing to sacrifice himself for the cause. he never wanted to feel the pain of loss he felt for his mother in reference to knox prescott.

each attempt to avoid the avalanche was futile, before finally hecate used a detect to take the brunt of the damage and protect sam. just after, sam could feel the cold surround him; but then flame. a massive flamethrower melting the avalanche for the most part just before silence.[break][break]

not surprising, he wakes with a start. his body jolts first as he twitches several muscles. there is a weight on his chest and as he opens his eyes he sees it is hecate. firstly he checks her pulse. she blinks curious eyes at him and he gives her a small pet or two.[break][break]

"keeping me warm?"[break][break]

she trills in her throat and gets up, allowing sam to sit up as well. he looks around, curious as to where he has woken up to. he can see a building, and he can see a statue with individuals checking it out already. beyond that, he doesn't recognize the place.[break][break]

but he can feel something wearily familiar about it. perhaps the lurking of death or the presence of war.

food sounded like a horrible idea. he doesn't think he can stomach much else but the caffeinated beverage. he might even drink it black for the time being so it won't upset his stomach being filled with carbs.[break][break]

he knows it is the end and yet he doesn't feel so very bothered by the idea. in fact, because he knows knox will be there after he passing, and because she is so at peace with how his life is going, he feels like perhaps that's alright.[break][break]

life goes, it ends. it continues without the same people over and over. the only truth in life is that there will in fact one day be death.[break][break]

"thanks." it's the second time he's thanked him, but it will be the last. he shows as much with a kiss to knox' head as he brings him close.

the morning was a usual one. a few softer moments with knox before getting to work. he goes to mint at his own behest, because he has questions circling a few things.[break][break]

one, he knows this boy as 'his grandson' or so he had adopted himself to be. originally he hadn't picked a side, league or rocket; yet now he adorns the rocket logo with an odd pride. no, he doesn't flaunt it or advertise. but to those in rocket who know of him, it's no secret.[break][break]

when the offer to enter is given sam opens the door softly.[break][break]

"it's good to see my grandson has made a name for himself."[break][break]

while his tone is deadly serious he does in fact mean it as a tease. because he's learned how to joke; a robot with jokes.

sam's reflection is given after his absol, hecate foresaw with a future sight the avalanche that was coming. he'd taken to higher ground by her warning and was safely watching the wreckage and insanity.[break][break]

the coms tell him that black fragments are scattered around and to collect them. initially, this sounds to him like something that will win them the war in the long run. a smaller battle. the more samples they have, the better research can be had on their end.[break][break]

hecate remains at his side, eyes glowing still.[break][break]

"see what you can of the fragments. we'll make that our prime goal for now. unless tides turn for the worst on a different front."

sam's not sure if he ever would have guessed when waking up that morning if he'd be standing on mt. pyre reflecting on life and end up talking about tattoos with a random passerby that fell out of a dimensional shift.[break][break]

but also, sam takes the punches life throws and rolls with them. so he observes the exposed art and studies it. they mean little to nothing to him. other than it being a much longer and painful process.[break][break]

"was it because of a tradition that runs in your family that you got them in a less popular fashion, or by personal choice?"

those soft touches are enough to melt sam into a thousand pliable pieces. he watches the movement to knox' hip, then nods.[break][break]

"i'm sure at this point they have, and we've tried every alternative method... but i don't mind easing the pain. i've brought aether and persephone for the same reason."[break][break]

the two are tucked away on his own belt. sam moves a hand to caress knox' elbow, a show of thanks; mostly an excuse to use that touch as an anchor.[break][break]

"i'll ask her if she minds, but i'm sure she won't. we can run her a bath and do a few treatments there."[break][break]

and definitely ask the doctors. he doubted they'd deny them the wish; at this point, his mother could ask for the floor to be completely cleared and they'd likely try and do so.

this one reminds him of mint frost, but a little ... derpier, as knox prescott would say. he doesn't comment, simply makes a mental note and takes the slap on the back as a sign of good faith. even if his fists clenched in response due to habit.[break][break]

"i'm simply taking in the scenery, reflecting on choices to make."[break][break]

will he voice more than that? no. he knows not this dude.[break][break]

"yes. they did hurt. as tattoos do. but i found the pain therapeutic."[break][break]

sam feels exactly the same. like he's somehow failed knox in not bringing him sooner to meet her. like he's failed his mother in not getting knox there to meet her sooner. but how could he? things were busy, after all.[break][break]

life moves on and those not in direct flow of another's life get swept away. connection keeps these lives connected but only those by one's side can walk the same path of life. it is inevitable, he knows this.[break][break]

yet, he regrets. it's not something he's used to feeling. guilt rests with the regret and sam finds strength in squeezing knox' hand.[break][break]

"we may not have an abundance of time, so the time we do have is precious. i'm not sure she'll survive the night. she's acting fine because we're here, but the readings aren't good."[break][break]

he knows them well enough from previous charts and an abundance of reading. there are such things in life as miracles and a professional opinion, but sam knows them well enough.[break][break]

"thank you for coming with me. i wouldn't be coherent if you weren't here to keep me anchored to reality."

the realm around him is a curious place. it is the border. the border between life and death, so they say. it is something that has come upon mt. pyre in his absence. [break][break]

because his priorities have shifted, because he cares more for somebody else more than he cares about his own comforts, he doesn't so much mind. he doesn't take it personally that mt. pyre is no longer something he has to worry himself with. and yet, he finds himself curious.[break][break]

the curiosity was gentle at first. yet now he feels a slow burning grudge in the pit of his stomach. against whatever has caused this oddity to come to the mountain. it is, after all, still a place he highly respects. as is any ground considered for the burial of companions through life.[break][break]

both human and pokémon alike.[break][break]

"i'm afraid my own stories won't bring an air of light to the situation."[break][break]

the two with him seem ... different. he's never met either of them, to his knowledge; and with a memory that is photographic in nature, he remembers things very well.

"well, what other choice do i have?" sam watches the two of them, making room for knox on the bed by scooting closer to his mother.[break][break]

she makes room for them both, but sam has to help her move. he does, and she is scooted a bit, and she lets out a small huff.[break][break]

"that's the spirit. now, tell me all about you two. i wanna hear it all."[break][break]

and so they do. they talk about them, how they met. sam doesn't leave out details either. his mother hears about how he froze a man and made his glalie eat them. his mother just shakes her head and makes sure to ask if they deserved it, if they're alright now. he's sure to explain they are. that he and knox' sister have made sure they're all safe.[break][break]

by the end, she's exhausted and asleep. sam's gotten out of the bed and headed out of the room with knox to get something to eat. because she's sleeping and he thinks, what if she doesn't wake?[break][break]

so he keeps his hand in knox' and then looks to him with curious gold eyes.[break][break]
