Their next obstacle isn’t as easy to avoid.

The very ground beneath them shakes, as if during a low magnitude EARTHQUAKE or under the effects of a similar Ground type attack. They soon find out that it’s neither of these, for Arcanine jumps out of the way with expert agility when the rock solid head of an Onix emerges.

It looks at them before DIGGING its way through the rocks once again, disappearing into the ground with its large body following behind it.

Vic sighs, relieved.

”Come on, Nougat. Let’s get out of here before we disturb it more and it decides it wants to fight us.”

With an enthusiastic bark, the Arcanine does as asked, continuing their descent to Rustboro City.

His words are said with a bright and confident smile, but Vic knows well that he himself would struggle with being put in a wheelchair even if it were for just a single day. It makes him feel a certain sense of sympathy for Alexei, one that leads him to sigh quietly as he looks up at the skies.

A flock of Unfezant flies by. Migrating, probably. A reminder that days are getting colder and that winter will come soon enough…

”Oh… I just felt like dying my hair. Why? Do you think it looks bad?”

Emerald green eyes fall on Alexei then, the ever too tall ranger looking down at him… Since the gym leader is now stuck having to stay seated.

Is Vic perhaps too trusting? Probably, but that doesn’t mean he’s innocent enough to discount the possibility that someone roaming through the forest this late at night could have nefarious intentions. In his experience, it’s much more likely that whoever this guy is got lost or something of the like, and isn’t it always better to expect the best from people anyway?

It’s how Vic likes to go about things, at least, and that’s also the reason why he laughs lightly at the other’s hesitation. ”You don’t have to pay me anything. Come on, come sit by the fire, night’s are getting kind of cold.”

Petting the Arcanine that stares at Izzy and the Salandit with a truly intimidating stare (since, you know, it has INTIMIDATE as an ability), Vic stands, heading over to his backpack in order to grab a few dishes and serve their curry.

There’s a plate of juicy curry for everyone: one for himself, one for the stranger, for the Dragapult, the Arcanine, the Goomy, and even for the two Dreepy that are as if freeloaders living in the Dragapult’s horns. It’s like a small impromptu feast out here in the middle of the forest, including unexpected guests too.

Step by step, jump by jump, the Arcanine makes its way down Route 115, descending from the rocky height where the entrance to Meteor Falls lies. It’s almost like horse riding, except that it’s much more comfortable than what Vic imagines horse riding must be like.

His Arcanine is also much less prone to nervousness than what horses usually are, which is helpful in moments like when a Clefable’s DISARMING VOICE causes it to stop, whimpering at the sound yet not being alarmed.
[break][break]
”It’s okay, bud, just speed past it, it’ll be fine.” With a calm and gentle tone, Vic pets the pokémon’s side to comfort it, his other hand covering one of his ears.

And so, by way of EXTREME SPEED, the Arcanine speeds past the obstacle indeed.

The shadow cast by the barking Salandit under the pale light of a full moon is one that could make it seem as large and intimidating as the Dragapult that stares at it with wild amber eyes. Its gaze could be called intense, threatening, and yet it’s a yawn that accompanies it soon enough – the dragon quickly losing interest in their guest and going back to napping along with the Dreepy and Goomy that cuddle up against its scales.

Vic, however, isn’t as easily distracted, or perhaps he is and what distracts him this time is the pokémon’s trainer suddenly appearing from among the trees.

Aha! So it wasn’t a wild Salandit after all!
[break][break]
”Hey, no worries, he wasn’t bothering us at all.” The ranger chuckles, offering a smile similar to the one he had given to the pokémon when it had appeared at his camp. ”Do you two want to stay? Seems like your Salandit’s hungry, and there’s more than enough curry for everyone.”

Once leaving Meteor Falls, it’s atop of his Arcanine’s back that Vic decides to make his descent down to Rustboro, the Fire type ever being all too reliable and agile.

They take it easy, with no need to rush, because while they definitely could make it back to Rustboro with ease, there are other reasons why they’re here...

The scenery, for starters, but also the hunt. After all, Vic knows well that much alike the falls, dragons dwell in this route.

Because, yes, the grand majority of Vic’s pokémon are indeed named, since his days of catching absurd amounts of them are long gone now. Hell, they were long gone before he even moved to Hoenn.

Perhaps that’s part of why he’s so selective about his captures, and why he doesn’t even bother with disturbing the Gothorita that passes by, carrying a whole bunch of colourful apricorns in her arms. Where did she even find those? Is she taking them to her hiding spot?

It was by mere coincidence that his most recent missions had ended up with him having to make a stop at Fortree, so why not take the chance to visit a dear friend and the bird sanctuary he had heard so much about?

Having taken longer than expected with his latest mission, the lush forests of Route 119 are where Vic chose to camp out for the night before continuing to make his way back to Lilycove.

Why not go all the way to Fortree and stay at a hotel, you ask?

Truth be told, things like hotels are a costly luxury to someone living on a Ranger wage, and it wouldn’t be very financially responsible to stay in one every time he’s traveling, would it? Plus, there’s also the fact that Vic has always thought that there’s something nice about camping; something fun, something peaceful, and even something nostalgic now that it comes with so many reminders of all those nights spent out on the routes of Unova and Galar.

Especially on a night like this one, when the delightful scents of freshly made curry rise in the air as a pot rests over a crackling fireplace. A scent so delightful, in fact, that it causes the Arcanine lying down besides him to raise his big fluffy head – sniffing the air before wagging his tail excitedly.

It even draws wild pokémon to the camp!

For it’s soon that a Salandit comes running into the campfire’s light.

Wait… Are Salandit even native to this area?
