The speckled patches of forest and great wild grass that trailed up the path towards Fortree made for prime areas for remaining unseen - Izzy had grown almost used to them by now, but he'd grown up in nothing but cities and it would be a lie to say he was yet comfortable in the wilds. The very real prospect of walking across an enraged mother Pokemon guarding her young was much less of a problem in the backalleys of Slateport, but out here? Izzy was the intruder.[break][break]

This night, especially, of all nights - there had been some tip, some little hearsay that shiny KECLEON- not one, but two, had been spotted in the area. He was out to investigate and, if needed, intercept - those things would fetch a pretty penny. The hours he'd spent wandering the forest made it all feel like a lie, though. The full moon bored down on him like a great judgemental eye - was he really so stupid to go out into woods so late, with barely any lead, and then not even find anything? It was high time Izzy gave up and turned back.[break][break]

Uh... wait, where was back, again?[break][break]

The little lizard on his shoulder half-slept, flicking his long tail absentmindedly as though he had no idea they'd just wandered into nothingness for a couple hours and now couldn't get out. Myszko raised his snout to the air and sniffed, slowly blinking, and then suddenly standing up - digging those needle-sharp claws into Izzy's shoulder. "Ow, fuck, you dickhead--" It was said like malice, but still spoken with love. Honestly, the Salandit could do very little wrong to truly piss his trainer off - even if he were to leap from Izzy's shoulder and go barrelling into the darkness towards the faintest sliver of a light in the distance. If he did that, Izzy would be surely so understanding and definitely not be annoyed, frustrated, or a little bit frightened at being left alone.[break][break]

As Myszko's tail disappeared into the shadows between trees, Izzy did indeed feel annoyed, frustrated, and was just a little bit frightened at being left alone. He ran towards that halflight, hoping that it didn't belong to some league dipshit who'd ask him why he was wandering about all suspicious-like.

Having taken longer than expected with his latest mission, the lush forests of Route 119 are where Vic chose to camp out for the night before continuing to make his way back to Lilycove.

Why not go all the way to Fortree and stay at a hotel, you ask?

Truth be told, things like hotels are a costly luxury to someone living on a Ranger wage, and it wouldn’t be very financially responsible to stay in one every time he’s traveling, would it? Plus, there’s also the fact that Vic has always thought that there’s something nice about camping; something fun, something peaceful, and even something nostalgic now that it comes with so many reminders of all those nights spent out on the routes of Unova and Galar.

Especially on a night like this one, when the delightful scents of freshly made curry rise in the air as a pot rests over a crackling fireplace. A scent so delightful, in fact, that it causes the Arcanine lying down besides him to raise his big fluffy head – sniffing the air before wagging his tail excitedly.

It even draws wild pokémon to the camp!

For it’s soon that a Salandit comes running into the campfire’s light.

Wait… Are Salandit even native to this area?

”Hey, buddy, are you lost?” Vic smiles gently, ever one to be fond of all pokémon.

The little Myszko looked up at the pink-haired stranger, caring little for the other Pokemon curled up in the area, and let out a little bark. He sniffed hard at the fireplace, barely feeling the flames lick at his snout, and sat down with an intense stare lingering on the warm pot. His tail agitatedly flicked from left and right, so wound-up by the delicious smell and his tiny rumbling tummy that he could have forgotten Izzy existed at all, if the trainer hadn't stumbled through the woods and into the clearing just behind him.[break][break]

As Izzy had chased the little monstrosity through the undergrowth, he couldn't help but wonder if somewhere out there, across the multiverse, there was an Izzy Baranowski who had made a much better decision when capturing his first Pokemon . A sweet little Skitty, a well-behaved Yamper, something that wouldn't cause him problems so constantly that it felt he spent his entire free time clearing up Myszko's messes. His eyes fell on the trainer and his Pokemon as he arrived in the clearing, and right as the smell of curry hit him hard.[break][break]

So that's what Myszko had been enticed by.[break][break]

Suddenly Izzy became acutely aware of his own stomach, grumbling weakly as he realised just how long he'd been wandering the route.[break][break]

"Hey, ah-- sorry about him, he's a menace" Izzy steps forward and the Salandit is scooped up in one swift motion like a misbehaving toddler, laying tummy-up in his trainers arms like the world's most scaly, bitey baby.[break][break]

Was this guy camping? It seemed to be the case, what with the fire and the tent. He shoots the briefest of near-smiles out of politeness to the other trainer. "Sorry to bother you, have a good one" His gaze can't help but linger, though, on that pot. It just smelt so fucking good.

The shadow cast by the barking Salandit under the pale light of a full moon is one that could make it seem as large and intimidating as the Dragapult that stares at it with wild amber eyes. Its gaze could be called intense, threatening, and yet it’s a yawn that accompanies it soon enough – the dragon quickly losing interest in their guest and going back to napping along with the Dreepy and Goomy that cuddle up against its scales.

Vic, however, isn’t as easily distracted, or perhaps he is and what distracts him this time is the pokémon’s trainer suddenly appearing from among the trees.

Aha! So it wasn’t a wild Salandit after all!
[break][break]
”Hey, no worries, he wasn’t bothering us at all.” The ranger chuckles, offering a smile similar to the one he had given to the pokémon when it had appeared at his camp. ”Do you two want to stay? Seems like your Salandit’s hungry, and there’s more than enough curry for everyone.”

If Myszko cared much about the glare of the dragon-type Pokemon, he didn't show it, though did take a few moments away from purring at Izzy's scritches to stick his tongue out at the Dragapult curled up below him, as if to gloat. Izzy notices and flicks the end of his snout.[break][break]

Was this guy really just offering to let Izzy join? He squinted a little, distrust reading plain as day on his face. "...You sure? I can't pay you for it, or anything". What was this guy, a cop? Did he catch that one time Izzy walked out of a Pokemart with a Super Potion in his pocket? It was an accident! There was also, y'know, all the heinous Rocket-related actual crime, too.[break][break]

...But... the curry smelt so good, and the guy wasn't lying - there did seem to be plenty for everyone. Not to mention, it would taste a whole lot better than whatever Izzy would scrounge up in the forest himself - nuts, if he was lucky? Apricorns, maybe? It didn't seem like roasting Apricorns over a Salandit's EMBER would taste all that great, certainly not compared to the bubbling pot of yum in front of him.[break][break]

Is Vic perhaps too trusting? Probably, but that doesn’t mean he’s innocent enough to discount the possibility that someone roaming through the forest this late at night could have nefarious intentions. In his experience, it’s much more likely that whoever this guy is got lost or something of the like, and isn’t it always better to expect the best from people anyway?

It’s how Vic likes to go about things, at least, and that’s also the reason why he laughs lightly at the other’s hesitation. ”You don’t have to pay me anything. Come on, come sit by the fire, night’s are getting kind of cold.”

Petting the Arcanine that stares at Izzy and the Salandit with a truly intimidating stare (since, you know, it has INTIMIDATE as an ability), Vic stands, heading over to his backpack in order to grab a few dishes and serve their curry.

There’s a plate of juicy curry for everyone: one for himself, one for the stranger, for the Dragapult, the Arcanine, the Goomy, and even for the two Dreepy that are as if freeloaders living in the Dragapult’s horns. It’s like a small impromptu feast out here in the middle of the forest, including unexpected guests too.

Holy shit. This dude was being serious, like, for real.[break][break]

Izzy wanted to hesitate more, but the delicious offering of curry as it was plated up and steaming hot was too much to handle - he took a seat almost subconsciously and started to dig in, only remembering after a couple mouthfuls to say "Ah-- thanks. I'm Izzy"[break][break]

At his side, Myszko had taken his own bites from the side closest to him, with Izzy unaware or perhaps uncaring that his Salandit were eating from his own plate. The little lizard curled up, after a few chomps, in the nook between Izzy's crossed legs - Myszko's cheeks bulged with the stockpile of curry he had taken.[break][break]

As he ate quietly, Izzy watched the stranger's Pokémon. The great, proud Arcanine; the Dragapult with it's Dreepy nestled in it's horns, even the little Goomy, half-asleep, cuddled up.
"You've got some really rare Pokémon here. You a collector or something? And, uh- thanks again. For the food. I might of been, erm... a bit lost" He makes eye contact for a second and breaks it immediately - it's something a little too comfortable for someone he only just met.[break][break]

Ugh... why did Izzy keep running into random handsome guys while he was busy doing other stuff? Was he cursed, or something?

There’s nothing quite like good food after a long day, and out here, in the calm of the woods, there’s a special feeling to a meal cooked over a campfire. Vic will never be one to consider himself an amazing chef, but perhaps it’s practice that has led to his curry tasting pretty damn great. The pokémon seem to be enjoying it, at least, and from the looks of it, his unexpected dinner guest is as well.

Does he really need to eat from the same plate as his pokémon, though?

Oh well.

”Rare?” Considering Izzy’s words, Vic looks at his own pokémon, a slight smile reaching his lips. Truth be told, he has never been one to care much for rarity, but he’s all too aware that a lot of people don’t see dragons all that often, and being the son of a pokémon breeder, he knows way too much about such things. ”I’m not really a collector, no, but I do mostly specialize in dragon pokémon these days.”

These days, because most of his old pokémon are now living in the comforts of retirement back at his family’s estate in Mistralton. Except for three, that is.

After a few more scoops of curry, he looks at Izzy.

”If you’re lost I could point you to the way out of the forest, but it’s getting pretty late. Do you have a flying pokémon that could take you back to town quickly, at least?”

Why do people always come to the forest without being properly prepared for it?

These days, he'd said. This guy couldn't be much older than Izzy was, but he talked about training in the past like he'd done it all his life. And he probably had. Things like that always made Izzy so self conscious - a little reminder that he hadn't the money or time for anything like that. But when the world was so focused on Pokémon, it couldn't help but make him feel... shitty, at times.[break][break]

The plate was finished soon enough, both tummies full and both faces warm from the comfortable fire just in front of them.[break][break]

"Flying Pokémon? Eh..." He thought for a moment about his meagre collection of pals. Not one of them could fly, and even if they could, he doubted any of them could take his weight. "...No, I don't. But I don't mind hiking through the forest again, y'know, if you could just point me in the direction. I don't wanna bug you for too much longer" Izzy shrugged. He wasn't sure this guy would take no for an answer, and so he relented.[break][break]

As he started to stand up, passing his finished plate back over to the taller guy that sat before him, and brushing off his shirt, Izzy paused for a second. "Maybe you could just give me your number or whatever, that way if I all down some hole or break a leg I can hit you up again, or whatever"[break][break]

Wait, did that sound like he was asking for his number, like... asking for his number?
"--If you want, I mean" ...did that just make it sound even more like that? Ugh. Fuck. Ew. People.
