Honestly, despite the way he chuckles, Vic is somewhat surprised that Matias actually remembers who he is. After all, the Hoenn Star Tournament had been forever ago, and he had battled a whole bunch of people. They both had also been at Mt. Chimney when the whole Groudon thing happened, sure, but back then most people had been too preoccupied with like… actually dealing with Groudon and stuff.

And also taking killer selfies, of course. How could anyone forget that?

”I’ve been alright, pretty busy with work and all. How about you?”

It’s a second later that a Kadabra attempts to use its MIRACLE EYE on the Dragapult, and in response, the spectral dragon calmly wanders over to it, floating upside down as it meets the Psychic type’s gaze. Without a sound, without a warning, it attacks with a point blank HEX.

Apparently, Taffy didn’t like that very much.

Poor Kadabra, even if it had it coming.

With a sigh, Vic chucks a pokéball at it.

Mt. Pyre, Jagged Pass, Route 116… For as little credit as they get, of course some rangers would notice the recent influx of people visiting places like these to catch wild pokémon. Even Meteor Falls had become victim of Hoenn’s sudden “Unown craze”, and while that’s all good and fine, it definitely isn’t the kind of perfectly safe place where a bunch of people can just wander around without a care in the world…

Just in case, Vic finds himself out patrolling the area on this particular day; clad in full ranger uniform and with his Dragapult following close behind him at every step. Things are quiet for a while (or as quiet as they can be with rapids and waterfalls crashing against rocks nearby), but it’s then when he notices Matias and his small gang of Katonian Eeveelutions.

Thanks for not blowing us away.” Giving his Dragonite a fist bump (because that was his bro right there), Vic called it back to its pokéball, the dragon seeming to roll its eyes with a huff before disappearing in a flash of light – almost as if it thought itself too good to be receiving praise. Of course, Vic found this ever too amusing; a faint smirk tugging at his lips while waiting for Derek to finish taking his pictures.

Vic definitely wasn’t made from spelunking, and it was relief that filled him when finding daylight and taking a deep breath of fresh air. Yeah, being out of the cave definitely beat being down there.

”He’s pretty cool, huh? Stubborn as hell and kind of a pain to deal with sometimes, but he gets the job done when he needs to. Your Sobble there is nice too – little dude has killer aim.” Vic may have been somewhat of a dragon enthusiast, but he had always been one to appreciate a pokémon with potential. Having lived in Galar for a few years, he was more than familiar with how strong an Inteleon could be – especially a Gigantamaxed one, that was a sight to see!

Never one to be outdone by some silly little bird, the Dragonite scoffed at the LEAF STORM before spreading his wings as far and wide as the cave would allow. Gold scales shimmered under artificial light, teal-coloured membrane catching the minimal breeze within the tunnel with each one of the wings’ movements. Up and down, front to back. Once, twice, it was with power that they flapped, and by doing something as simple as that, to a HURRICANE they gave rise.

”Pez… dude… can you like… not?” A defeated sigh, and yet there was no signs of surprise in the ranger’s tone as he held onto his gear so it wouldn’t be blown away, as if this were something he dealt with almost everyday.

On the bright side, once the winds subsided, whatever wild pokémon hadn’t been dealt with with their previous attacks definitely would no longer be a problem now – either having fled or fainted.

’Just something for the future.’

Is that really the sort of thing he wants to do in the future? One day, maybe, because there will always be something fun and exciting about challenging gyms and earning badges, but in reality that’s definitely not something he should be thinking about right now.

Vic is content with the way things are, with life as a ranger, even with the tedious bits like waiting for hours for some Tirtouga to hatch. In the end, it’s all rewarding, and it makes him happy, so it’s not difficult to smile when Lance suggests heading back.

”Good plan, wouldn’t want anything to get at them.”

Just in case, his ever reliable Dragapult is called out of its pokéball as they walk back to the beach, the ghostly drake disappearing in plain sight in order to keep an eye on things from the shadows. Nothing will happen to the Tirtouga, not on their watch.

While it may have only been two pokémon, and small unevolved forms at that, in Vic’s eyes those two captures made this visit of Meteor Falls be rewarding and more than worth it. It was enough, but then again, with Vic being the way he is, he probably would have found a reason to be satisfied even if he had caught no pokémon.

Out of the blue, a small box is delivered to mint frost's address along with a hastily written note. Within the box rests a Great Ball. The note reads as follows:

"Hey Mint!
This is Rolo! After everything that happened at Mt. Chimney, I figured he'd do more good as your pokémon than mine. He's really good in a battle, and really really loves oran berry candy and a good swim in the ocean. Please take good care of him! ♡ "

With the chilled can now in hand, a finger is placed under the tab, pushing it up. Still, he pauses before taking a sip, his lavender gaze fixing on the ranger captain.

”Huh, really? Honestly, I didn’t take you for the type... That’s pretty cool though, I always wanted to try the Sinnoh circuit. I did Unova and Galar.”

A grin and a short laugh.

It’s what he used to want to, at least. Back when he cared about that sort of thing and thought he wanted to be a successful trainer... Isn’t he technically already one though? Not by Vic’s standards.

Of course, he tries not to think of that, so he takes a sip of his Charja-cola – the drink ever too sweet.

”Hm… I don’t think so? I always get too serious about things when I start challenging gyms, and then it ends up more stressful than fun.” Another shrug, because it’s the truth, even if Vic rarely admits to that.
