Ever busy as Mars is, eating on-the-go is not a rarity for him. He has never enjoyed it. That much, is right about, and so the hitman’s decision to take a seat while they talk is both appreciated and welcomed. He can’t stay for long, so might as well enjoy the meal while he’s here, right?

Undeniably, someone should distract the strongest defenders of their objective, and Mars doubts any League supporter currently at Mount Pyre is stronger than , but that he is the one facing her defies the purpose of his mission.

He knows he’s one of the people best equipped to move to the primal point unnoticed. It’s why he had done so before. It’s why he needs to go back and finish what he had started after leaving bleeding.

It had been a calculated move. One lacking in any hesitation or concern for the harm it would cause. In fact, the gun had been shot for three purposes: a distraction, retaliation, and most importantly, the reminder that he could have done much more harm if he had wished to. Mars would almost go as far as calling himself merciful but thankfully his highly inflated ego has yet to reach that level of lack of self-awareness.

He sees no defeat in the outcome of this fight.

He had come to 's aid, none of their most pokémon vital had fallen, and they both had been unharmed.

To Mars, the only thing that has been lost is precious time.

It’s why he had chosen to leave: because he does acknowledge that dealing with and would have taken too much time and there could have been potential casualties for both him and Barnaby. Mars is a man who believes in priorities and efficiency.

This is also the reason why, when Barnaby suggests releasing his Braviary, the underboss does hesitate for a moment. Flying to the summit wouldn’t take long, but it also wouldn’t be as quick and as discrete as TELEPORTING. Yet, he knows his partner is right, he needs to save his strength for what’s to come.

Mars chooses to do as Barnaby asks, and from a dark pokéball, the huge Braviary of black plumage is released once more.

”I plan on sneaking closer to the primal point while everyone is busy with their fights. I’ll drop you off before that.”

A superior’s instructions, not a man speaking to the most important person in his life. As much as Mars would like to keep Barnaby by his side, he knows it’s not the most effective approach, and that they both need to do what they’re best at.

Their last moment together before returning to the battlefield is cherished. While flying atop of the Braviary’s back, a hand is placed on those arms that wrap tightly around him. Soon, all this will be over and they’ll be able to go home together.

Deep down yet above all others, this is the main belief that pushes Mars to keep fighting.

Mars has his suspicions about what will happen when they encounter the Klink, and those suspicions quickly see themselves confirmed.

A click of his tongue commands an attack and it comes in the form of a SLUDGE BOMB just as it had before. Steel type as Klink is, it does nothing at all, and the Zorua wimpers for a second or two. Mars just tilts his head and commands it to attack once more.

BITTER MALICE does the trick after a moment, although it may have only been used due to the fox’s own frustration.

The sight of the fallen Blissey sparks nothing in him; guilt being as nonexistent as any sense of achievement. It’s a battleground. Pokémon will inevitably fall. The fact that one has been dealt with doesn’t mean absolute victory.

The appearance of the Sylveon confirms this.
[break][break]
For a second, it brings reminders; thoughts of the Sylveon that waits for him back at his home in Sootopolis. The one that had been the only surviving member of his late wife’s team. The one who had guarded her body with its life. The one who is aggressive, distrusting of most people, yet that is finally beginning to warm up to . The one that is one of the only pokémon that truly matter to Mars.

This Sylveon is not Achelous. Far from it.
[break][break]
This Sylveon is commanded to do something for which Mars would kill it under regular circumstances.
[break][break]
These aren’t regular circumstances, though. He reminds himself of that fact. He reminds himself that their goal here is not to kill every League supporter in sight. They’re wasting time.

”Call Quartz back.” He tells in a whisper and with a mere glance. Barnaby will understand his intent, that much he’s certain of. With a click of a pokéball, the Urshifu is called back as well.
[break][break]
It all lasts mere seconds.
[break][break]
There are no words. There are no gestures. There is just the way the pistol’s barrel goes from being pointed at to pointing at instead, and immediately afterwards, the loud and explosive ring of a gunshot just as the Z-MOVE is fired as well.

The gun is lowered, and one of the masked individuals quickly puts a hand on the shoulder of the other.
[break][break]
Immediately, they disappear.
[break][break]
Vanished with no traces of their presence.
[break][break]
The sounds of combat are muffled and distant where they TELEPORT to; still Mount Pyre, but far from the summit where their objective awaits. A spot Mars teleports so often to that it has been committed to memory, making appearing there all too easy. For now, a safe place for them.

And yet not safe enough to remove their masks. There’s no knowing who might be watching.
[break][break]
The Unown is called to watch their backs for them.
[break][break]
”I’ll teleport you back to the peak in a second.” That second is needed to catch his breath. He knows he’ll need to use his teleportation abilities constantly once back at the summit, and that will inevitably take a toll on him. From behind the mask, Mars looks at Barnaby, and at that moment, he takes his hand in his. There’s a light squeeze. ”You better not die on me.”

He can’t ask him to stay safe, but he can ask him to do this one thing. Survive. Win this battle.

Mars will do the same. For himself and for them.
