An innocent life. His stomach churns at the thought and it’s with gin that Mars drowns away the sensation.

They had built barriers as high as they could reach for the sake of distancing themselves from the crimes they had had to commit, but there had been times before those barriers even existed, and Mars knows well that in his own case, certain things broke through the cracks in those walls and have managed to haunt him to this day.

His sins. His mistakes.

Martín del Mar is a prideful man, and there are only a few errors to which he will ever admit wholeheartedly. The story that Gavin asks for him to share is one of them, but even now Mars doesn’t fully blame himself. It’s easier to have other targets for his anger.

The word hangs heavy in the air.

Mars pours himself another drink.

”He was from Canalave too, but we met in university. We had begun to grow really close.” The memories of his days as a student in Veilstone University have always been fond, but there’s darkness there that Mars has forced himself to block away – to push to the depths of the tempestuous ocean that is his soul. ”They convinced me he wasn’t who he said he was. That he was using me. An undercover operative sent to get information out of me… I was angry, Gavin.”

Martín del Mar is a person who always seems to have his emotions in control, as if made of steel. This is not innate; it has been learned out of necessity. Once upon a time, his anger had blinded him. This had not been the last time it happened.

A word charged, full of meaning, one that should not be spoken with ease. One that he knows BARNABY FINCH does not say lightly, and also one that he himself would judge and overanalyze if the circumstances were different – it would fill him with worries.

He is worried, though. Worried for Barnaby’s well-being. Worried because he came too close to losing him and that made him realise that he dreads even the thought of it. Worried because he knows he might be putting Barnaby in danger. Worried that Barnaby may leave because of it…

How selfish of him.

To care so deeply for someone that he’d be willing to accept the fact that they’d be better off without knowing him and then still dread the idea of watching them leave.

”How could I possibly abandon you?"

Barnaby won’t leave.

He looks up at him then, meeting his gaze, amber on cobalt like it has been since the day they met. No… Amber on cobalt, with so much more meaning because of all that exists between them. A single look that says everything.

No words are spoken.

He finally stands, but he does not create distance between him and Barnaby. He does not look away from him. He does, however, reach for him – fingers gently brushing against Barnaby’s cheek until moving to the back of his neck, pulling him into an embrace. The warmth of a familiar body against his is as welcome as it is cherished.

”I’ll keep you safe.” A promise. No, much more than that: a vow. ”I’ll make sure they can’t hurt you.”

”Or take anything that matters to me ever again.”

That had also been a vow. One that he had made to himself. He’ll make them pay.

”I’ll deal with them… I’ve been planning to for a long time.”

Unbeknownst to Barnaby, in this admittance is also the truth as to why Mars had joined Team Rocket. The truth as to why he’s in Hoenn. All for the sake of his revenge.

A hand on his means much more than what most would assume, and Mars appreciates the gesture even though at the time he’s too preoccupied with his own bloodstained memories to say much at all. Things like those have always come easily to him; physical affection, offering comfort to friends in the form of things like hugs and proximity. He knows it’s not exactly the same for Gavin. He knows a sudden touch could set him off and bring him discomfort. At least that’s what Mars has noticed, and it’s in part why the gesture makes such a difference to him.

He looks at the scar, but the story doesn’t surprise him.

Using murder as a sick and twisted test seems to be the ways of criminal organizations like these. Using people’s fear of death and their desire to live. Kill or be killed, no alternatives. They always make sure to blind them to the alternatives.

"I was sloppy and scared, so I cut my hand in the struggle."

He nods at that part. He understands.

”I always feel like people who say their first went flawlessly are full of shit.” There’s a grim chuckle, followed by a sigh that is all too deep. ”I know my hands were shaking during mine… Made me miss a vital point when first I shot the gun.”

Messy. He knows Gavin will understand even without being given every single gruesome detail of that night.

”It was my sixteenth birthday. I was planning on going to celebrate with my friends, but instead my grandfather had his goons take me to do a job... I don’t even remember what the guy did to deserve it. Fucked up somehow, I guess. It was an execution as much as it was a test. He got me more involved in their bullshit from that day on... It was the first time I shot a gun too.”

Before he had mostly just witnessed their terrible crimes, but that was the day his grandfather turned him into a criminal. The day he began to become the monster Emilio Marzán wanted him to become. Alright, then again, it was long before that that his innocence was stolen away.

He listens quietly, acknowledging every word, and in the end, he gives a solemn nod. It’s very different from his own life, but in a way, it’s also similar: they both had been dragged out of perfectly happy lives and pulled into the darkness.

”Sounds like a waste on their part, but Rocket gets what Rocket wants.”

They had wanted Gavin to be their soldier, so they had turned him into one. Mars understands. Against his own will, he too had been turned into something he never wished to be.

”Why’d they do it?”

He’s quiet for a short moment, taking a sip of gin. Then, he reaches to unbutton the collar of his shirt, pulling at the chain from which hang two rings that most people in Hoenn have never seen. He takes the necklace off, setting it down on the kitchen island for Gavin to see: one of the rings is a gold wedding band and the other is a signet with a sigil akin to a Shield Forme Aegislash – the symbol of the Marzán family.

”I’m my grandfather’s only living heir, and as you can imagine, his syndicate matters much more to him than family. All of my life, he did everything to make sure I would turn out to be the kind of leader he wants for Sinnoh, but when I married Natalia... When she got pregnant with our son, he knew I could give it all up for the sake of protecting them.” He downs the rest of the drink. The memories flood his mind. His home, the broken glass, the bodies, and the blood. ”Natalia wanted us to leave. She had almost convinced me we should. My grandfather found out, and I supposed he refused to lose his precious heir a second time… He made it look like it was the work of our enemies.”

Not even Natalia had known of every single horrible detail of his life, for the longest of times. He had kept the truth from her because he had not wished for her to carry those burdens – especially when growing up together. He has kept it from those he cares for, he has kept it from those who matter to him, and even BARNABY FINCH has only been given hints of all through which he has lived. He doesn’t want Barnaby to see this side of him. Not yet, at least. What if he doesn’t understand it? What if he hates him for everything he has done?

It’s with a sigh that Mars pushes those painful questions away, instead focusing on Gavin’s suggestion. Kanto. He is curious. He has been for some time. That much is undeniable.

”Same goes to you.”

”You can ask. I’d tell you the truth.”

”You joined Rocket there, right? Must’ve been hell as a grunt.”

Some argue that they’re too light with their training in Hoenn, and while Mars agrees to some extent and is far from forgiving or permissive, he would never want things to become like they are in Kanto. That much he’s sure of. That’s not what Hoenn needs. It’s not what they need.

The scolding only manages to get a laugh out of him, one Mars forces himself to hold back, because while he also doesn’t doesn’t wish to wake Tempest Quinn, the whole situation is just too damn funny.

It’s not something men like them can do easily: to forget all their duties, all their responsibilities, all their worries, and their precious reputation for just one moment and laugh like this. Mars knows well that Gavin appreciates it just as much as he does. They both need things like this from time to time.

It’s why for a few minutes only the sound of quiet laughter overtakes the kitchen, fading into giggles and snickers. Eventually, it’s all replaced by a comfortable silence, and Mars smiles oh so faintly while nursing his drink.

”All jokes aside, I’m glad we can talk about all this. You know, all the fucked up things that happened in the past? I don’t really talk about that with anyone.”

It’s a comment spoken quietly and born out of the deep trust he has for Cillian Quinn.

Out of all the legendary pokémon that have aligned themselves with Team Rocket, Lugia and Xerneas are doubtedly the ones he likes the most, and even though there’s very different reasons for this, he does respect them both. He also respects Gavin enough not to just throw him in the ocean. It’s different with bryan delarosa. Bryan is somewhat like an annoying little brother… who is now older than him.

”That’s true, but the Unown aren’t really legends, they just… are.” It’s hard to explain, especially when being as tipsy as he is. It’s as if the Unown have always existed, as if they’re a primordial part of the whole multiverse. Sometimes, Mars really does wonder if they follow the will of Arceus itself.

The thought steals away his smile, and then, when Gavin laughs, it quickly returns to him.

”Shhhhh.” Mars urges him to silence, also being much louder than what he probably should, and when doing so, he chuckles too.

”Oh, but how I wish I were, Mr. Merlino.” It’s the act. That voice he puts on for interviews. Martín del Mar, CEO of Piazza Oro Grande Bank, a philanthropist who wants what’s best for the region. He doesn’t smirk like this in the interviews, though. ”During times like these, don’t you think we all could do with a little more modesty? I was reminded of that recently, while aiding the less fortunate. It’s a funny story, really. You see–....”

Mars laughs, a sudden yet honest sound, lacking in any mockery or sarcasm. Perhaps if he hadn’t been drinking so much he would appreciate how easily the mood in the room had shifted – how naturally these conversations come between them. Then again, the alcohol itself is probably in part responsible for that. Alcohol and friendship.

”Sure, not like either of us would ever consider sobriety.” He grins, raising his glass towards Gavin in a silent toast, as if to prove this.

The taste of gin does wonders for his mood, and the warmth of it brings comfort. Especially when talking of Xerneas brings memories of a conversation much similar yet also different; one where he and bryan delarosa had sat at the beach after an all too eventful night and shared secrets.

”Really? I like Xerneas, he gave me his go-ahead to toss Bryan into the ocean.” Mars smirks and of course he doesn’t explain the full context of it. Just like how he doesn’t mention the fact that he’s thankful that Xerneas hadn’t attacked him when he had mistaken bryan delarosa for an intruder when a space-time distortion had changed him.

”Hmm… I guess I was suspicious of them? Figured they’re probably using me for the sake of their own goals or something. Adored is a nice thought, though.”

He would never voice it if it weren’t for the alcohol. He would never express how much the Unown actually mean to him.

Maybe it’s the gin talking, the tipsiness heightening this paranoia of his, but even without knowing the secrets Gavin and Lulu Flint know about their boss’ abilities, Mars understands why one should be wary of illusions, tricks, and of people who pretend to be someone they have never been. He himself has done it. The Zorua that now calmly sits nearby is proof of it.

”Sure.” He agrees to the suggestion of a codeword without hesitation, not questioning it, and after taking a sip of gin, he looks at Gavin. There’s a sharp yet playful smirk upon his lips. ”It better be something ridiculous neither of us would ever say otherwise, though. That way we can laugh about it and wash off the suspicion.”

He winks as if this were the smartest suggestion ever, but mostly he’s just tipsy and amused by the idea.

At the mention of his powers, Mars pauses, and that smirk of his shifts into a smile that is somewhat pensive.

”Yeah, that’s true. You know… The other day Xerneas said I’m “adored by the Unown”. I had never thought of it that way.”

He had been thinking about it a lot ever since it happened, but he had never mentioned it to anyone. Not even bryan delarosa.

There’s deep appreciation in having someone with whom to share some of his deeper and darker secrets, in finding a kindred spirit in Gavin, but undeniably, there’s also deep appreciation in moments like these.

”I can be pretty damn paranoid, she can be pretty damn paranoid… Suspicions are inevitable when you meet someone smart who you don’t trust.” Mars is self aware like that. He can understand the situation, but more often than not, he also sees his paranoia as justified. He’s right to be wary of people. He’s right to distrust. He has been betrayed by those he trusted the most in the past.

”She is brilliant, though. Terrifyingly so. Glad she’s working with us and not against us.” He swirls his glass, looking down at it with a faint smile. ”I also don’t think I would have listened even if I had trusted her. Never been good at listening to people who disagree with me.”

He’s self aware. He knows his own stubborn pride. He also knows how much he has suffered because of it in the past.

The difference lies in the fact that Mars’ own regrets are about what has long since been lost, while Gavin’s are about someone who is still a part of his life to this day. Stepping away from the counter, Mars takes the gin bottle and glass, carefully setting them down on the kitchen island. He takes a sip by Gavin’s side, not seeming to mind the presence of the Sylveon that he’s still cautious of even now.

Forgiveness does not come easily, that much Mars knows well, and while Gavin has come to matter to him, he would not blame Lulu Flint if she hasn’t granted him her forgiveness. It’s still saddening, though.

Boreas rises in the air, scanning his surroundings from behind a mask of azure flames, and after he realises where he is, he flaps his wings with all of his strength, sending a gust straight towards Mars.
