Really, it was kind of wild that they’d sent her on this mission. No one had asked her about her driving experience—but at least she had a license, and at least she had gotten this nauseatingly expensive thing this far.

Surely, the League would cover any damages that might occur.

She looked over at Amor, eyebrows raised a little on her face as she attempted to hide her sheer terror behind assuring enthusiasm.

“Yeah.” Hope I don’t crash.

A small flash of teeth.

Well, that was awfully thoughtful and attentive of him.

Then, the way she blushed and the reason for it went straight over the man’s head. She seemed sick to him or something, and he touched her forehead to check. It was too much, and she turned away.

“Uh, no; I feel fine.”

She looked away again, staring off into somewhere, and took several moments to think. Not about how, but about if.

“I’m not sure that you can.”

She’d needed more than a few days, and he’d come knocking too early. For now, all she could give were unfinished thoughts and uncertainties. 

Her head shook again.

“But really, Matias… I just found out that the father of my child is a mass murderer.”

She chewed on the next words briefly before finally looking up at him.

“I’m not really that worried about us right now.”

“Pushed me away? I was already gone.”

Gone from his life. He’d started a different one, unfamiliar to her. They had grown apart.

“I knew those people, too.”

It was a lot bigger than just the two of them. She shook her head, still in disbelief. She’d spent all week remembering names, and paining herself with memories.

“I should’ve been there to help bury them. To speak to their families.” Sage didn’t often cry—but she’d done it for days, now. Tears welled again. She swallowed it down with a willful sigh. “I feel like you’ve robbed me, Matias. Of duties, and grief…”

Something in her combusted, for just a rare moment. Maybe she didn't consider her words long enough. The hurt got the better of her.

“And quite a bit of my respect for you.”

Sage smiled, happy to please when it came to food—even now, that she’d agreed to base her decisions around King’s tastes the next few days. She wondered what he liked to eat.

He was pulled away, and she watched as he picked out the Phanpy, finding it amusing, and then, much less so when it was handed to her.

There was a sudden feeling of realization, and her smile fell the smallest bit—not in disappointment, just in a way which was clearly caught off-guard.

King liked her.

She bit her bottom lip a bit, at first not knowing what to think.

“It’s uh—it looks like my Donphan when he was unevolved.” Her voice was a little higher than usual, and she had no idea why. Eyes hung too long on the stuffed elephant, unable to meet his for a moment.

When she finally did look back up, she found herself blushing, and bizarrely unable to blink. “Thanks.” ’Shit.’

What was happening?

She turned away, trying to be subtle.

She couldn’t help but feel, momentarily, like they both should have been dead.

Her face took on a look which he’d likely find unfamiliar. It cracked with pain and regret; something she rarely allowed herself to feel.

“Yeah.”

She agreed, and the tone of her voice held some sort of strange, isolating energy. One which drew away from him internally, for perhaps the first time ever.

“You should’ve.”

Sage sighed as each of her darts homed in on the same bad outer ring. At least she was consistent, right?

“Okay, Wayland; show me how it’s done.”

And that he did. Honestly, she’d not expected him to win, having had more faith in herself than she clearly should have. However, she didn’t look bitter about such an outcome.

Instead, she sighed and smiled.

“Guess I’m feeding you next few days. Congratulations.”

As she sat on the bed, looking up at him, she felt a new discomfort herself—out of seemingly nowhere. She brushed it aside.

“I know you will.”

Eyes finally averted again to the floor for a moment.

“Things will go back to normal, okay? I just… wasn’t expecting a lot of this news.”

She felt guilty, but she didn’t tell him.

Ladies first. It elicited an eye roll, but her head smirked as it shook.

“Whatever.”

Picking up three of the darts, she took one in her right hand, lined up and threw. One after the other, smiling regardless of the outcome, because it was fun.

He was right.

She didn’t know what to say, now that she’d been called out. So, she played with a cuticle for a moment in thought, while idly looking at his face. Something in hers vaguely apologized, although she couldn’t have been sure why.

“I just needed to collect my thoughts, I guess.”

Leaving Delta behind had been too easy in a way, and the guilt was mounting. After his rejection, she’d ran again; this time, placing distance between herself and her daughter simultaneously.

For what felt like once in her life, there was a room to herself—until Matias had come to tell her it wasn’t good enough.

He stood at the wall, clearly uncomfortable. While in the doorway she'd noted how much he looked the same, she began to trace over his age. Differences. Unfamiliar scars.

“And I'm still not done processing things. That's why I came here.”

It implied that she couldn't collect her thoughts around him, maybe, whether it was actually her intention or not.

Sage nodded slowly with a knowing smile, brows high and teasing. “Right.”

When he straightened from her shove, she looked over to watch his eyes go big, waiting on her.

“Hmm… If I lose…”

“I’ll make you whatever you want for dinner, next three days. I'll go to the market and everything.”

Sage did a lot of cooking, already. After learning a thing or two from in her teenage years, she had won many a heart through the meals she'd offered. However, she didn’t typically serve by request.

Sage shrugged. He was going in circles.

“Like I said, it’s cheap. I don’t need a lot. Why are you badgering me about it?”

She’d never had a lot. She’d not been bestowed the same blessings of luxury as Matias likely had in his adolescence. She was most content keeping the extra cash in her pocket.

Sage gave a light laugh. “Not that scary, huh?”

Her shoulder bumped into his lightly, teasing. It was a funny thought that he might be intimidated by the same things that children spent their allowances to go on. Everyone had their thing.

Suddenly, this didn’t sound so bad.

But, she had to be sure.

“So, wait… that doesn’t mean that if I lose, I have to clean the bathrooms for a week, does it?”
