Already weakened from the barrage of attacks, Sugar has no way to defend herself against the finishing ice punch. However, it barely has time to connect, for Luka recalls her before any worse damage can be done.[break][break]

"You did your best, sweetie," Luka murmurs, planting a little kiss on the top of Sugar's love ball. "Get some rest now, okay?"[break][break]

It's disappointing to have been so thoroughly defeated, but she smiles over at Paxton regardless. "Wow...you guys were incredible! You're so strong!" She should probably be taking notes— she has her own Mawile, and little idea of how to train her well.[break][break]

"Maybe, um...w-we could train together sometime?" She flushes a little. "It'd be nice to get a little stronger and, well...I mean, it'd be nice to just see you more often! I-if that's not a bother, at least."

"You've got this, Sugar!" Luka cheers, waving her pom poms. "You're doing so well, sweetie!"[break][break]

Sugar yips and braces herself as Topaz cloaks herself in flames. The Arcanine is faster than her, but Sugar is small and nimble and manages to zip across the field just enough that she only sustains a glancing blow from the attack.[break][break]

This entire experience has been a nightmare for her fur. Though Sugar manages to avoid taking the brunt of Topaz's raging fury, she still has to deal with the fallout. Static electricity continues to crackle around her, and there's dirt on her paws to boot. She'll need a proper bath after all this.[break][break]

But a little dirt and a bad hair day isn't enough to bring her down. If anything, it's more motivation to take down her enemy! She aims a shadow ball at the canine as they chase each other around, hoping to put more distance between them.

In Sugar's attempt to avoid the mud on the ground, she misses the attack that's coming right at her. She yowls as clumps of mud strike her in the side— it hurts, but more importantly, her fur is filthy.[break][break]

Sugar doesn't play dirty, but she does get even. She kicks her attacks up a notch, this time attacking with springtide storm. Gusts of sakura-infused wind swirls around the Swampert, carrying with it clumps of mud and muck from the ground.[break][break]

She's sending the attack right on back, with double the force. Now she won't be the only one covered in muck!

As the afternoon sky bleeds into evening, another announcement draws the attention of festival guests. luka chêne, using her connections and a little bit of charm, has managed to get DESIREE BLOOMS to agree to a performance. As the time for her show draws near, guests are welcome to come gather around the stage, or enjoy the music from the snowfields around them. Either way, it's sure to be a wonderful show![break][break]

The atmosphere, which was already jovial, becomes electric as Desiree takes the stage. She's flanked by two more dragons: an Altaria each from Remiel Calcifet and luka chêne. Their soft and fluffy appearances perfectly compliment the lovely performer as she addresses the gathered crowd.[break][break]

"Hi my loves~ ♡ Keeping warm, I hope?" Desiree smiles as the two Altaria produce dragon flames that burst above her in the colors of fluctuating pink and gold. They form her name, Desiree Blooms, in whimsical text before shattering, casting dragonfire petals through a sea of pink tonic.[break][break]

"Let's kick off the new year with something special~! It's unreleased, sue me."[break][break]

Loud cheers mingle with the music as the performance concludes. The two Alteria perform a dragon dance behind the artist, finishing the show off with another burst of colorful flames. It's the kindest way to put it, for now. From what she's heard the League has no idea what the long-term consequences of Dyanamaxing might be for a Pokemon, and that worries her. But the sheer power could be a useful tool...for both the League, and Rocket. It's a bit distressing to think of what the latter might do with it.[break][break]

"It's so strong...but I guess it's not totally unbeatable, right?"[break][break]

After all, Sugar is holding up remarkably well against the giant beast. Though the ground rumbles and shakes around her, she manages to nimbly dart around the drill bits that burst from the ground. Her footing is unsteady, but luckily the battle hasn't taken too great a toll on her yet, and she can just keep up with the force of such a powerful attack.[break][break]

As soon as she has a moment to pause her ribbons and eyes begin to glow. Concentrating hard, she attacks with light of ruin, and a powerful burst of fae energy explodes around Tofu.

Mud! Her worst enemy. Even though she manages to avoid a direct hit, the field is now covered in a layer of sludge. Sugar grimaces as she tries to toe her way around it, but she can't avoid the inevitable muddy paws.[break][break]

"It's okay, Sugar! I'll give you a proper bath after this!"[break][break]

Her Sylveon gives a disgruntled mewl but settles back into an offensive stance. After sizing up her opponent again she conjures a shadow ball, holds it in her ribbons, and gives it a powerful spike. Picking up speed (and with an extra oomph from spite), it goes hurtling towards the Swampert like a volleyball.

She's here alone, which is probably ill advised.[break][break]

But Luka had been late to the arranged meeting place with the Ranger who was meant to accompany her to the mechanical kingdom today. She assumed they had gone on without her, but after a few minutes of poking through rubble, it's clear that her supposed partner is nowhere to be found.[break][break]

She and her Sylveon pick carefully through the ruins, trying hard not to draw attention to themselves. So far, the broken bits of automatons they've come across have all been inactive, though that doesn't mean there's no danger here.[break][break]

Still, they're already pushing their luck. They should turn back. Luka pushes open a door that she thinks will lead her towards an exit, but is surprised to find someone else on the other side. She jumps backwards a few steps, heart racing, though it starts to settle once she realizes that it's just some guy. Her missing partner, perhaps?[break][break]

"O-oh! Um, hello! S-sorry, I just...I didn't think, erm, that is! I didn't realize... She trails off. Now that she has a better look at the guy, she can say with confidence that she's never seen him before. In fact, it's rather bizarre to see another person here all by themselves. The League never authorizes these missions without a partner...[break][break]

"Of course I am." What an odd question. She blinks up at the man, head tilted to the side. "Aren't you?"[break][break]

She glances around, but there doesn't appear to be anyone else in the vicinity. "They said I was going to have a partner...it's not you?"

Gloved hands are clasped in delight, and Luka's cheeks glow with happiness. Despite the smiling faces of those around her, it's still nice to hear some actual validation. There's nothing she likes more than bringing a little bit of joy to others.[break][break]

"But you should make a habit of having fun more often, Monsieur," she continues— a mild scold softened by that ever present smile. "Ehe...to be honest, I've been working until now. But that's okay! Today is about making sure everything goes perfectly for our guests, y'know?"[break][break]

But now that she has a little break, the childlike urge to play in the snow rears it's head. Vanilla agrees— the Vulpix yips softly and buries deep into a snowdrift, then pops out the other side a minute later, showering her trainer in a few frosty flurries.[break][break]

"I have a little time though," she concedes, starting to roll up a snowball properly this time. "So we can play around a bit...i-if you don't mind?"[break][break]

Sugar's dazzling gleam bounces off the Dynamax Pikachu with all the efficacy of throwing glitter at a building. She hisses in frustration and starts to prepare another attack, but thunder strikes before she can. Despite her best efforts at dodging, the entire field is abuzz with electricity, and she's tossed backwards by a particularly strong bolt.[break][break]

"You and your Pikachu are so strong!" Luka calls from across the field. Dynamaxing really is impressive...maybe she should try it sometime. But would her Pokemon like it? She stares up at the giant Pikachu, wondering how she feels about becoming the size of a blimp. Is it scary? Does it hurt?[break][break]

These are things she can consider after the battle. For now, they need to focus on winning this thing.[break][break]

"B-but we aren't going to give up! C'mon, Sugar! Let's give it our best!"[break][break]

It's easy for her to say when she's not the one fighting, but to Luka's credit her sygna suit helps. Electricity still crackles around Sugar as she gets to her feet, responding to the cheers with a determined yip. She conjures a springtide storm next, and the stormy air begins to churn as a sakura-infused whirlwind blows towards Aaron's Pikachu.

Were Luka to read Kazu's thoughts, she'd find their ideals to be very similar. In a world like this, with Pokemon so often reduced to tools in the hands of those that would abuse them, it's nice to know that there are some who still respect them.[break][break]

She's still smiling as Sugar prances onto the field, head high and ribbons wiggling cheerfully. They both size up their opponent, doing their best to think critically about the match. Strategy doesn't come easily to Luka, but with the help of her sygna suit, she can focus better and think more clearly. The connection helps; Sugar feels it too.[break][break]

Despite her type advantage, Sugar knows that she struggles when it comes to close combat. Her battles with John Sullivan and paxton concordas in the tournament have proven as much. So when the ice punch comes swinging towards her, she tries her best to duck underneath it and avoid the strike altogether.[break][break]

As she lowers herself closer to the ground, her ribbons glow. From them a psyshock is produced, and a burst of violet energy arcs and twists towards the Bewear.

Both Luka and Sugar take a little step back as Tofu grows to the size of a skyscraper. They've seen gigantic Pokemon before, but they'd always been battling alongside others. What are they supposed to do alone against an opponent of this size?[break][break]

"H-hang in there, Sugar! It's so big now, it'll be easier to hit!"[break][break]

There's no way Tofu can avoid the psyshock that blasts his way. However, it's just as impossible for Sugar to dodge the max volt that hurtles down from the sky. She hisses as electricity crackles around her, shocking her and making her fur stand on edge. But even though the tides seem to be turning in Tofu's favor, this fight isn't over yet!
