reflexes were one thing. intuition was another.

the sand blinds him, but he's too focused on the face that he doesn't notice the materialized weapon. the reaction was more reminiscent of a civilian than a veteran on the field, spitting sand out of his mouth while he holds on to his gyarados.

"why what?!" he shouts, wiping his face with sea water.

the system experiences a paradox between the overlap of a character present in the past and a character relevant in the present. memories that were deleted and replaced get patched with ones of old, extrapolating data from things that have changed.

michael navidson, better known as navy to his peers, was an old friend of kyle lopez. a man of ideals who has foregone little things for the bigger picture, navy climbed the ranks for hoenn's survival.

in this rewritten history, kyle was valued as his brother-- and just like gabriel navidson, was left on his own to build a better future.

"fine! i can play on my own if you would rather throw sand on my face!"

he produces a card with his entire name: private investigator, kyle lopez. he hands it to noel-- or leaves it by the bedside table if he was not interested.

"oh, and do you mean you can't remember anything?" he asks back, clarifying words from the person at the bed. "that's something serious."

kyle leans back on his seat and crosses his arms, pensive with his thoughts as insignificant worries bubble up from the circumstances. he grows pale as the realization dawns on him.

it should be the last thing to think about, but it surfaces more than more serious matters.

"that means we don't have any means to pay for your treatment."

he technically had been one before he ultimately moved on to the next profession. the job description, on the other hand, doesn't change much outside of him being unable to defer himself to paperwork instead of field work.

it was one of the disadvantages of being self-employed, he supposed. every responsibility falls on him.

"i'm more of the person you go to if you'd rather skip the complicated things like filling out forms and waiting for dates and other complicated nuances."

kyle grabs from his back pocket and produces a card from his wallet: private investigator, kyle lopez. he shows it to vespa, offering to give it if she cares enough.

"i get to hand out things like this too. makes me look professional-"

a bark sounds. the mabosstiff interrupts their conversation as it darts to a direction, leaving the trainer behind. the social dilemma of choosing to go for his dog or abandon someone mid conversation gets him nervous.

"so, um, i need to go after him now. do you, um..."

he finds difficulty in wording his thought.

surprise was the expression he shows.

"oh. that sucks." he calls back. "i haven't seen any of them. this place is too big anyways."

in any case, there was no guarantee that the fragment they were talking to had the sentience of the personality it represented. had it been the case, a reflection of what was once was does not carry over memories it shouldn't have.

"i know you guys are worried, but shouldn't you have a bit more trust in them?" he further prods.

kyle turns to thomas. "if your friends are anything like livy, then they're fine." his tone shifts to a more complacent feel. "characters like that don't die easily."

the smile on his face turns forced, but more so from the advent of talking about himself. he looks to his side, then to the ceiling, then to the door just behind noah to dodge direct eye contact.

"w-w-well, we o-offer private investigative s-services," he answers, voice wavering. "anything outside the scope of the police and the rangers, you can come to me."

nervously, he shifts his sights again to the walls. what was once a gallery of polaroid films was now a wall of framed certificates. it may look impressive at a glance, but it can be noticed that the display was diluted with awards from local competitions and such.

"people mostly ask me to look up to the weird happenings in the region-" he attempts to fix his composure, and finally look up to his customer in the eye. "-but don't limit yourself with those requests. we can take anything that fits the broad spectrum of the our services."

he drops his gaze down to his table as he muses his thoughts for an answer. noah was indeed a familiar name, but the person connected to it doesn't appear in his memory.

the very same memory tampered to compromise the altered falsehood to the truth.

"oh! verdanturf's gym leader!" he says, whipping his head back upright. "you have my parent's house as per contract, right?"

technically the truth, the contract of marriage was technically similar to that of business in this sense. definitions are blurred, but one that comes true for both versions of history is simple.

the lopez have left the house to their town's gym leader at that time as goodwill for the safety their town has under his care.

"are you here for something?"

"they told me there's a giant rat around here," he explains to the ranger as they wander around the abandoned warehouses. "they're probably exaggerating, but i'm being paid to look at the cause, so..."

kyle figured he might as well fix the problem while he's out here. being accompanied by a ranger just makes the process easier.

a flashlight illuminates the interior of an abandoned warehouse. debris from broken wooden crates and dents on its metallic walls were expected, but what was surprising wasn't the presence of something, but the absence of it.

"huh. weird. my bad. i brought you all the way here to help me relocate a wild pokemon, but i guess there's none."

it wasn't natural, and any ranger would catch that. the abandoned warehouse was a perfect shelter for nature's elements, and it was made more attractive with how infrequent people visit this location.

something was up, but there was no clue as to what it was.

12:08 PM - a knock on the door disturbs his first bite.

surprise spurs action to the person beyond the door. what welcomes the visitor is not the elaborate living room he was used to, but a makeshift office. the desk faces the door, with its owner lounging on a couch with his feet up one of its armrests.

he stumbles on his feet, taking the drink on the coffee table with his food and bringing it to his desk.

"ah, yes, that's me. right, right. welcome."

the first name basis catches him off-guard, but it wasn't like there were no people on hoenn this friendly to act familiar on first meeting. he closes the lid of his takeout and takes his seat on his desk.

"welcome to gold solutions. how can i help you?"

it was barely advertised, but people came together and set up an afterparty for the success of the last month's festivities.

local shop owners and restaurateurs have come together for their own celebration, inviting most of slateport's residents. the food park that kyle had frequented had been the chosen venue, and under the night sky, it lights up like a beacon.

fairy lights of different colors lace up the locale, providing colors that fill in the vibrancy of the vibe. the smell of grilled food and the sound of talks and laughter add more to the mood.

kyle wasn't one of the people responsible for it, but he was invited nonetheless.

he leans down one of the generators powering up the place, giving it one quick check with his electivire to make sure it was on working condition. with the last thing double checked for safety regulations, he turns to notice a pair of eyes staring at him.

"ah, sorry," he tells the visitor, explaining the situation. "they closed down the food park today for a private function."

the beach was unusually empty.

after the festivities, everyone has packed up and left. it was mostly the locals that remained on the beach, having been part of their life for most of it. despite slateport not being his place of birth, he has spent more of his life in the city the most out of every other place.

and so it was his chosen place of leisure at the moment. there's bonus points for it being empty, given that most of hoenn's residents needed time off of it after last month.

he pops up from under the water after being aided by his gyarados. the moment he gets up, he notices a childhood friend.

"ugh. you're here."

a hand throws a splash of water to his direction despite the fact that it wouldn't reach. the gyarados, on the other hand, was tempted to do more, had it not been stopped by its trainer.

a pair of bicycles were left at the back of one of mauville's city's main attractions, hidden from the public eye as their owners temporarily left them to embark on an expedition.

the backstage of the gym usually wasn't inhabited. all it usually had were safety equipment for riding pokemon, back up machine tools used for the sport such as timers, drones and cameras, and other features needed for the show such as line markers and barricades.

a young child around six and his chaperone were not here for these, but instead, entered the back entrance for the sake of front row seats.

a pyroar creeps with them, providing dim lighting with will-o-wisp. together, the small group finds their way to an exit that staff rarely use.

the metallic door creaks every so slightly as they take a peak outside. they appear on one of the uppermost seats of the stadium, where they watch the last few laps of the race between the challenger and the gym leader.

they stay until the end of the match and the awarding of the badge, where the kid continues to prattle to kyle about things he wanted to do on the race track.

11:20 AM - kyle appears on one of slateport's biggest hospitals for an errand. he leaves with prescription drugs that are rarely found on just any other pharmacy. a mabosstiff awaits him outside, having not deemed to be trained enough to be trusted indoors with sick people.

11:45 AM - the route he takes brings him to a street of hobby stores. he stops to look at the windows of a few establishments with his mabosstiff, though he never goes inside any of them. shoulders weigh heavy with each instance of window shopping, suggesting that he cannot be indulgent with himself.

11:53 AM - he crosses the road and goes to another busy street, especially around this time. it's a well-known food street in slateport's upper district, home to multiple family-owned restaurants and cafes. none of them were big brands, but it's the sheer concentration of them in one spot that makes earns them their fame.

12:02 PM - kyle makes a quick stop to one of the cafes at the end of the road. it takes him a few minutes, but the bag of prescription medicine in his hands is now replaced with a bag of freshly made food. should the scent waft to someone else's direction, the smell of freshly steamed rice and deep-fried chicken could make one's mouth water.

12:06 PM - just a block away, he enters an apartment building. he enters the same door on the second floor as he always did, but a signage now graces what was once a residential homing. curiously, it says open.
