”Me? A kick? Oh, Isaac, I have no idea what you mean!” Ceri gasps. Shocked! Horrified! Every syllable being filled with equal parts northern Galarian accent and the exaggeration befitting of a drama club kid during their first performance. Act for the back row.

Except that she’s fully aware of what she’s doing, of course. Even if the smile she gives him is as sweet as saccharin. Adorable! How could anyone who acts this cute be guilty of things as cruel as what he’s accusing her of?!

”You know what attracts pokémon to flowers, right?” She looks at him, and in those warm, chocolate-coloured eyes of hers there’s a glimmer of mischief. ”The first thing is their colour, obviously, but scent is just as important – if not more! Soooo… Gort here will help you out a little! And Aer!”

The Ivysaur raises a paw when his name is called, and stubby legs soon waddle over to where Isaac and his Aggron stand, spores glimmering among the petals of its blooming bud. It’s then when Ceri releases her Crobat out of his Heal Ball, the huge bat rising high up in the skies.

Electronic music fills the small lab, upbeat and in direct contrast with its sheer lack of inhabitants.

Well, there is one.

Towards the back, clad in shorts that most definitely don’t make for “laboratory safe attire”, a petite woman faces the wall, her manicured nails tapping onto the counter before her while she looks down at a metallic box. On her lips, a pink bubble audibly pops; cherry gum, also a questionable choice.

She presses the button on the box just as she had done a dozen times in the past few minutes, and just like before, nothing happens at all. It’s not unplugged, it had been working yesterday, so what the hell is going on with the centrifuge?

Annoyed, Ceri wrinkles her nose, but this annoyance of hers is masked with a smile the moment the mechanic enters the lab, and then, when she turns to look at the newcomer, by genuine surprise:

”Oh! Rory! What are you doing here?!”

Rory Faust? With Team Rocket?

Despite her surprise, Ceri beams, taking her friend’s hands when she approaches.

It’s not Sootopolis, that much is true. And, since it’s not, it could be argued that the Rangers’ reports of hyper aggressive Combee attacking innocent civilians are no concern to Team Rocket. None of their beeswax. Except that, well… It is pokémon acting much more aggressive than normal, and to someone interested in enhancing pokémon’s battle capabilities, naturally-developed hyper aggression sounds like an observation opportunity that should not be put to waste. She’ll get herself one of those angry specimens!

That’s how Ceri ends up near Route 119 in company of another Rocket grunt. Isaac Merlo, the poor unfortunate soul that had been dragged to help her in this endeavour.

She’s not dressed to be out in the woods, that much is a given, but she is prepared for what she came here to do, and with her camera in hand and her Ivysaur by her side, all that’s left is to lure out these apparently ever so cantankerous Combee.

”Okay, Isaac! I want you to stand among all those flowers over there!”

She beams up at him, bright and sweet, pointing towards a nearby flower patch.

What could possibly go wrong? It’s just some flowers, no?

As if each one of them were valuable and precious resources that could not be wasted in the form of idle chatter. Is that how FERNANDO SILPH lives life, trying to be as efficient as possible? Or, is it greed that leads him to hoard even his syllables?

”You were much chattier the last time we talked. Guess it must have been because of the League obligation and all.” The comment comes out as if her own musings spoken out loud – like if she were amused by the realisation. By then, the Deerling has already been sent to the confines of a pokéball, and Ceri’s gaze follows the movement of the Shaymin after it defeats its opponent. It would seem as if the councilman trains his pokémon to be as efficient as him.

There’s something mechanical about it. Almost robotic in nature.

And yet, she had caught him by surprise before, had she not?

Fascinating, isn’t it?

Mt. Pyre isn’t the sort of place where people would often expect to find a poisonous bug like Ariados, and yet here they are – a whole swarm of them living in the forests of the eerie mountain. With Spinarak too!
[break][break]
”Ariados, the Long Leg Pokémon, capable of producing webs from both its mouth and spinneret, and unlike most arachnids, being one to wander in search for food instead of nesting at one specific location. Much more prone to constriction than to making use of its venom, even if it tends to be one that acts rapidly when injected.”
[break][break]
All too informative thoughts flood Ceri’s mind as she watches the spiders, seeming completely undisturbed by their presence. If anything, russet eyes follow their movements with fascination, even if she knows well that if there’s a swarm of Ariados out hunting for food, they’re bound to cause trouble.

Frankly, it’s just not her problem.

She’s only here because this is a good opportunity to try and collect another specimen.

As if he had suddenly become a subject to be studied, Ceri gazes up at FERNANDO SILPH, and in doing so, she notices it: the fact that she had apparently taken him by surprise, and in doing so, she had received a response that hadn’t been carefully crafted by the perfect piece of machinery that must surely be his mind. If she weren’t smiling already, without a doubt, this fact alone would cause her to smile.

”Will it?” An eyebrow is raised, playfully daring to question his mentality, and as she does so, those russet-coloured eyes of hers turn to look at the frozen Shaymin, her smile subtly shifting to a slight smirk. ”Doubt your popsicle over there agrees.”

Perhaps she shouldn’t be teasing him like this, but Ceri has a tendency towards doing things she shouldn’t, and admittedly, she also doubts he even remembers who she is. Why would he? Ceri is not someone to have low self-esteem, quite the contrary, yet realistically speaking, there’s no reason for a man like him to remember her given the circumstances under which they met. Perhaps she should try to find her answer, but for now, she chooses to ignore the matter, instead turning her attention to the sight of a shy Deerling hiding amongst the nearby bushes.

”Aw, aren’t you a cutie?” She coos at the Season Pokémon, bringing a granola bar out of her pocket and attempting to use it to lure it closer to her. The Deerling takes a few cautious steps, and while the thought crosses her mind of how terribly easy it would be to tell Domino to attack and bring it down, Ceri simply waits, allowing the wild pokémon to taste the treat she had offered.

While the project to restore Sea Mauville and turn it into a marine research facility wasn’t exactly common knowledge, certain progress had already been made despite encountering unexpected difficulties along the way. Mostly, these came in the form of the pokémon that called the vicinities of the abandoned underwater structure their home – pokémon Rocket grunts had been ordered to deal with by their superiors.

Ceri may spend most of her time at the labs and have been promoted to researcher recently, but in the end, she is no more than a grunt, and as such, is begrudgingly that she finds herself standing on Sea Mauville despite her tendency towards sea sickness.

Thankfully, the structure doesn’t move with the water, at least not too much.
