when she fell unconscious beneath the waves, her mind began to swim. she dreamt of a small bedroom, with blue walls. an uncanny space, as though out of a memory. there, she was wandering into darkness, as it expanded outward into the unknown. the depths. [break][break]
her body fell limply onto the back of the feraligatr. king’s efforts would seem in vain at first, until finally and suddenly, she was coughing up a considerable amount of water and gasping for air.[break][break]
she looked up at king, processing. had he just saved her? ”what—“[break][break]
still on her back, eyes cast to the red waters a small distance off, and her heart rate increased again. [break][break]
”what the fuck happened?”[break][break]
she winced and groaned, feeling a splitting headache.

her eyes twitched narrower a moment with a pinch of her brow. she’d done a great job, but she needed to work harder? what was working harder than convincingly running from a bear, real or not? [break][break]
she didn’t question him. at his suggestion, she had to repress a deep sigh. [break][break]
“of course. your call.” the edges of her smile, never having left her face, curled more with too much sweetness to be genuine. [break][break]

chaos only escalated. [break][break]
amidst the thrashing, her equipment continued to suffer. her mask was forcefully removed, leaving behind a bloody nose. the good flipper disappeared. there were scratches, further driving the hunger of surrounding predators. [break][break]
her tank continued to bob over choppy waves, thankfully further away… until a sharpedo itching for something to sink its teeth into did just that. with a jaw strong enough to rip apart a tanker, its mouth closed and sealed the fate of several. [break][break]
the impact from the explosion was like a bus out of nowhere, and immediately knocked her unconscious. [break][break]
she slipped under bloody waves.

she’d just run halfway across a farm and back for this ungrateful man.[break][break]
she wasn’t sure what sort of response she’d been expecting. she sighed lightly, holding her egg up to the air and eliciting another delighted priii! from it. [break][break]
“were you stealing berries?” her voice was very goochy-goo again.[break][break]
regardless, she knew she fed it enough. if she didn’t, her luck was damned. she researched that shit.[break][break]
“thanks. thought you just said i needed to work harder.”[break][break]
her togepi was back out of the air and close to her chest and she looked back up at him, too-long sleeves obscuring her stained hands around her apparently thieving baby.

nina stared a moment, and then began to roll her shoulders at the ditto in a similar fashion, only to jump when niko appeared out of nowhere. there was no more rolling, only a hint of embarrassment. [break][break]
and there was togepi, riding on his shoulder, as expected and hoped for. [break][break]
“togepi~,” she cooed appreciatively. lucky little shit. her voice dropped an octave or two back to normal when addressing him, then. “i always need to be paid more, niko.”[break][break]
she did fishie lips at the togepi as her hands went out with waggling long-nailed fingers to retrieve it from him, making incoherent baby noises all the while. [break][break]
“i feed her fine. what do you mean?”

she splashed, and splashed, making a scene, not only for the frantic sailors aboard, but also for the actual sharpedo passing by curiously several meters off. its dorsal fin protruded from the water, probably contributing to the haste of those aboard attempting rescue. [break][break]
there were shouts and tension, and at first, nina was pleased with herself that she’d done so well. then… she felt the force of something large pass under her good flipper.[break][break]
her heart sank, and her screams became louder and very real, accompanied by sobs that were surely guzzling too much ocean water.[break][break]
several pokémon descended to her rescue—leaving the ship much less guarded.[break][break]
the chaos only increased, louder, as was the audible thrashing of the waves created by bodies much larger than nina colliding in battle. her tank was knocked loose, carried off into the middle of the action.

the ship was bigger than she’d expected.[break][break]

when they came out of the water, she felt her fear unexpectedly grow at the sheer imposing height of the vessel overshadowing her. it was a little disorienting.[break][break]

up top, sailors were busy working to offload the cargo onto the dock for its final phase of transport. strategically from the other side of the ship, nina pulled her mask off and began hollering as loudly as she could.[break][break]

“HEEELP! HELP ME, THERE’S A SHARPEDO! PLEASE!” it wasn’t the story she’d gone with, but she figured considering the chunk out of her flipper, it was believable enough to keep going once she was on-board.[break][break]

she gave another a scream, and splashed around as violently as she could, feeling something come loose as she did so. “oh shit,” she muttered, spitting saltwater. hope that wasn’t important...[break][break]

sailors looked over the side, and quickly went to rescue action accordingly.

”gold pyroar casino,” she sighed. then, as the alleyway opened up to a nearby convenience store, she stalled a moment and then released him. “i’ll be right back. no more gas stations for you, i’m just getting a pack of cigarettes.”[break][break]

only by necessity, nina had pulled out the boss shoes.[break][break]

one or two minutes later, she returned, lighting a cigarette on the way. [break][break]

“okay.” she blew a cloud away from him. “let’s go.”[break][break]

and she’d lead the way, to neon lights and palm trees, and an impressively large pyroar fountain, water spewing from its roaring mouth into a pool filled with coins, as though the ones thrown away inside the casino’s doors were not enough.

togepi took the berry with a shrill, grateful chirp in niko’s ear. however, nina did feed it well, fully superstitious that if she slipped on her care for it at all, her luck would suffer.[break][break]
the message came through, and she glanced down before turning as instructed to nothing but air. until she looked down. [break][break]
“oh. you.”[break][break]
she pursed her lips.[break][break]
“thanks for that, i guess.”[break][break]
with a sigh, she did a turn, squinting through trees. she was sure that she’d see niko and her togepi somewhere. he could see her, after all.

it would be a good five, six minutes before she’d parted ways with the couple, explaining that she was heading to locate her friend on the other side of the farm—which was true.[break][break]
she walked back, only to find that said friend was gone. she wouldn’t have looked for him, except for one thing.[break][break]
“damn.”[break][break]

with a sigh and an adjustment of the purse still over her shoulder, she delved deeper into the farm as well to look for him.[break][break]
“come on, niko. i wanna go home,” she muttered.[break][break]

it was a domino effect. [break][break]
as the ditto transformed, nina yelped loudly, “shit!” perhaps alerting anyone nearby first of their presence. shortly after, though, was the roar. it was a perfect set-up, really, but also definitely a test of reflexes.[break][break]
she glanced at niko with wide eyes, and then, without missing a beat, let out a horror movie-level scream before ripping off through the trees.[break][break]
“ursaring! there’s a--” she feigned a pant when she came into view, having quickly worked up panicked tears. there was a gasp, as she bent with hands on knees briefly. “run! there’s an ursaring.” then, a loud, dramatic sob as she brought reddened hands to her face, “it ate my herdier!”[break][break]
“we have to run! drop the berries, it’ll go after you!”[break][break]
she sprinted past them, bounding through the grass to lead the way towards nowhere in particular.[break][break]
meanwhile, the togepi she’d left behind looked up at niko and smiled sweetly.
